BOB'S BEST BUYS Valentine's Day Selection Wine: Pegasus Bay Gewurztraminer 2024 North Canterbury, $30 Why I chose it: Gewurztraminer is an aromatic wine with punchy aromas that often resemble flowers (in this case rose petals). National Lamb Day Selection Wine: Trinity Hill 2021 The Gimblett, Hawke's Bay, $39.99 Why I chose it: It's NZ Lamb Day today and I wanted to choose a wine that would make a great match with lamb. Lamb is high in fat, which makes it a high flavour meat. Cabernet Sauvignon is a thick-skinned red grape that is also high in flavour making it a perfect partner for lamb. Trinity Hill 2021 The Gimblett is a blend of Cabernet Franc 50%, Cabernet Sauvignon 46%, and Petit Verdot 4%. The wine even has a subtle minty character which gives it a built-in mint sauce-like component that's perfect for lamb. What does it taste like? Dense, intense red with cassis/dark berry, chocolate/mocha, vanilla, cigar box, and spicy oak flavours with a touch of mint. Approachable now with good ageing potential. A powerhouse red that was built to enhance the flavours of NZ lamb. It's from the Gimblett Gravels, a premium red-wine region in Hawke's Bay, Where can you buy it? Whisky and More, Waikato, $34 Liquor Legends, Auckland $34 The Good Wine Co, Auckland $35.99 Will it keep? Yes, with careful storage this wine will still deliver pleasure after 5-10 years or more LISTEN ABOVE See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

In this episode, we talk to Dr Michael Thai, a Lecturer in Psychology at UQ and an award-winning teacher. Michael shares how he replaced his formal consultation hours with a weekly outdoor picnic. This format enables the breaking down of barriers and a different type of conversation between students and teacher that ultimately has enabled Michael to become a better teacher.
I took notice of her unique approach to fitness on social media. Approachable, fun, silly, doable and high on positivity/low on shame. Listen as this Danville native talks all things New Year's resolutions, ditching the concept of "new year, new you" and adopting a "word of the year," how she views her own body, "cold girl walks," talking to kids about food, fitness events culminating in a brewski or ice cream, building community, Ozempic and what's wrong/right in the wellness industry. Ali is a delight. She is fun, energetic and would be a great coach aka friend to support those wanting to shift their health and wellness goals. I'd like to thank this episode's sponsor Illini Pella Windows & Doors of Champaign. At 1001 N Country Fair in Champaign you'll find the brand synonymous with quality in windows and doors. Pella is one of America's most trusted names for replacement windows, entry doors and sliding patio doors. Visit their showroom on Country Fair Drive or call (217) 356-6474. This episode is a clip from an Expert Call I facilitated in the Smart Cleaning Tribe last December with my friend Alonzo Adams of Busy Bee Cleaning Company in West Chester, PA. Alonzo is a serial entrepreneur with one of the best business & financial mindsets I've ever had the opportunity to learn from. His cleaning company is top rated in Southeastern PA. Alonzo has also grown multiple revenue streams outside of his cleaning company, which is creating generational wealth for his family. He also just completed his term as the chairman for the Association of Residential Cleaning Services (ARCSI). I invited Alonzo onto a Tribe call to share about ARCSI and it's many benefits. But my true intention was to give Tribe members a dose of millionaire mindset around business, finance, and networking. Alonzo is a master networker. In this clip, I extract the networking portion so you can get a flavor of how the rich become rich. Here are my notes from the call with Alonzo."Your Network is your Net Worth”“It's not about the How. It's about the Who”- Dan Sullivan. The Who changed my whole life. I had to change my entire WHO in my life to take me the places that I needed to go. How do I get around the A players in my industry? Alonzo had to invest in his future by buying plane tickets, conference tickets, and connect with people in person. This builds trust. In Vegas, Alonzo has connected with a guy in 5 minutes in the hallway that created a 6-figure cleaning contract with Will Smith's people. In Vegas, he asked Derrick Christian, “Who is this room that I don't know that I should know?” Alonzo met the two people and they are doing financial business together now. Networking is purposeful.People miss on networking - It's not about you. Look to be a resource to others. Show the value of others knowing YOU. Ask this. "Why is it important to know me?" What is you sales pitch that makes you valuable to others. Networking has become more selfish in this decade. Networking takes time and you need to practice. Don't go to people with agendas. Be interested and be interesting. It takes time to craft your elevator pitch. What do you have that's unique that can help others that makes you stand out. Are you referable? You can't touch and go in networking. You have to water the relationship to grow it. Alonzo told the story of the $100k per 1-hour keynote. Always plant seeds. At conferences, the power is in the hallways and dinners verses the chairs. Masterminds and businesses have been created from the hallways. We need to look at opportunities for networking events when things open up.Two groups in 2020. One tried to maintain and others did more than they ever did. Alonzo got around the ones that were doubling and got around them. Put together a plan and don't deviate! If you're not planning to succeed in 2021, you're planning to stay the same. Control your own narrative and your own destiny! The Wannapreneurs were the ones speaking loudly and didn't make it. They were shallow.“Tough times make tough people!” - Alonzo AdamsFind 3 people that you want to meet that you've never met before. Make a commitment to link up with these people. Connect with these people. Who are they and make a commitment to do it. Alonzo does this every year! Look for people who are Approachable, are Purpose Driven, and have a good Mindset. Habits exposes people. Someone who is financially savvy.Read the rest of this article at the Smart Cleaning School website

2 Corinthians 4:6 For God, who said, “Let light shine out of darkness,” made his light shine in our hearts to give us the light of the knowledge of God's glory displayed in the face of Christ. Last week, we looked at God's glory displayed in the face of Christ as an infant. This week, we will move ahead to God's glory displayed in the face of Christ as a grown-up. I will share Scripture that gave me a literal sigh of relief. I will read to you from: Luke 4:14-21 Luke 8:42-48 Matthew 5:1-10 Matthew 11:28-30 If you would like to support this podcast with a monthly or one-time donation, thank you! https://www.sherriyoungward.com/support To find out about upcoming gatherings and new projects, please join my email list at www.sherriyoungward.com
2 Corinthians 4:6 For God, who said, “Let light shine out of darkness,” made his light shine in our hearts to give us the light of the knowledge of God's glory displayed in the face of Christ. What comes into your mind when you think of the face of Christ as an infant? Who among us would choose to come into the world the way He did? Even as an infant, He challenged the way of the world and the way of "me." Right from the start, Jesus modeled humility, dependence and trust. And so that's something that has served me well, both in my past corporate life and then also in running a business. I think that being a good problem solver will take you far because there's only so much information you can actually know.On today's episode of Superpowers for Good, I had the privilege of sitting down with Lindsey Williams, the founder and winemaker of the Urban Wine Co. Lindsey shared the inspiring story of how she's transforming the wine industry, particularly in the South, by introducing diversity and a fresh approach to winemaking.Lindsey didn't take the traditional route to becoming a winemaker. Starting her career as a lawyer and then transitioning to investment banking, she learned firsthand how to handle high-stakes transactions. But a trip to Tuscany sparked her love for winemaking, and that passion evolved into a full-fledged business.Urban Wine Co. isn't just another winery. Lindsey imports grapes from renowned wine regions like California and Oregon and even from overseas, but the magic happens locally in the Carolinas. “We're making our wines here locally, and we're spreading diversity wherever we go,” Lindsey told me during the interview. She explained that her goal is to make the wine world more accessible to people from all walks of life, introducing wine to new communities that might not typically engage with it.Her ambition doesn't stop at making wine approachable—she's aiming to scale the business dramatically. Urban Wine Co. has already secured a partnership with Target, bringing their wines to 44 stores. Lindsey sees this as just the beginning, with a vision to grow the company into a multi-million dollar business.I was inspired by Lindsey's dedication to continuous learning, diversity, and growth. Her journey from corporate America to winemaking is a testament to what can happen when passion meets perseverance. The Urban Wine Company is raising capital from the crowd via Wefunder. I encourage you to visit the site to learn more.tl;dr:* Introduction to the Guest and Business: Lindsey Williams, founder and CEO of Urban Wine Company, discusses her unique winery concept in the South, where they import grapes and use modern fermentation techniques. Her mission is to diversify the wine world and make it more accessible.* Innovative Wine Production: Urban Wine Company imports grapes from various regions, including California, Oregon, and overseas. They're working on producing North Carolina-grown wines, with their process taking place locally in the Lake Norman area.* Lindsey's Background and Transition: Lindsey, a former J.P. Morgan investment banker and lawyer, became passionate about wine during her travels. She studied winemaking and transitioned into the industry, eventually founding Urban Wine Company.* Business Growth and Scaling: The company started small but gained popularity, now partnering with Target for a 44-store deal. They're raising funds to expand production and distribution.* Entrepreneurship and Problem-Solving: Lindsey shares advice for entrepreneurs, emphasizing the importance of learning, problem-solving, and adapting, particularly during challenging times like the COVID-19 pandemic. How to Develop Problem-Solving As a SuperpowerLindsey's superpower is her ability to solve problems, a skill she developed during her corporate career, and that has been crucial in her entrepreneurial journey. Her approach to problem-solving has helped her navigate challenges ranging from regulatory issues in the wine industry to the everyday tasks of running a business.Lindsey shared how, early in her business journey, she faced the sudden closure of her wine-tasting room due to COVID-19. At the time, her business relied entirely on in-person sales. With no prior experience in online sales, she quickly learned the legal and technical requirements for selling wine online in North Carolina. By working with a vendor to meet compliance standards, Lindsey successfully transitioned her business to online sales, allowing her to continue serving customers during the shutdown.Tips for Developing the Superpower:* Learn as much as you can: Every new problem is an opportunity to become an expert. Immerse yourself in the issue, whether it's marketing, sales, or regulatory compliance.* Write things down: Organize your thoughts by writing them down, using lists, sticky notes, or vision boards to map out potential solutions.* Prioritize issues: Focus on the most critical problems first and consider what you can control.* Get everything out in the open: Use tools like whiteboards to visualize all possible solutions before determining your approach.By following Lindsey's example and advice, you can make problem-solving a skill. With practice and effort, you could make it a superpower that enables you to do more good in the world.Remember, however, that research into success suggests that building on your own superpowers is more important than creating new ones or overcoming weaknesses. You do you!Guest ProfileLindsey Williams (she/her):Founder & Winemaker, The Urban Wine Co.About The Urban Wine Co.: The Urban Wine Co. is the first urban winery in the Charlotte regional area and was started out of the desire to bring approachable, affordable and locally made wine options to the Carolinas.Website: www.theurbanwineco.comX/Twitter Handle: @theurbanwinecoCompany Facebook Page: fb.com/theurbanwinecoOther URL: wefunder.com/urbanwinellcBiographical Information: 18+ years of corporate legal and finance experience at companies like JPMorgan and Wells Fargo. Yanagawa Seigan (1789–1858) and his wife Kōran (1804–79) were two of the great poets of nineteenth-century Japan. They practiced the art of traditional Sinitic poetry—works written in literary Sinitic, or classical Chinese, a language of enduring importance far beyond China's borders. Together, they led itinerant lives, traveling around Japan teaching poetry and selling calligraphy. Seigan established Edo-period Japan's largest poetry society and attained nationwide renown as a literary figure, as well as taking part in stealthy political activities in the years before the Meiji Restoration. Kōran was one of the most accomplished female composers of Sinitic poetry in Japanese history. After her husband's death, she was arrested and imprisoned for six months as part of a crackdown on political reform. Seigan and Kōran's works at once display mastery of a poetic tradition and depict Japan on the brink of monumental change. The Same Moon Shines on All: The Lives and Selected Poems of Yanagawa Seigan and Kōran (Columbia UP, 2024) explores the world of Seigan and Kōran, pairing an in-depth account of their lives and times with an inviting selection of their poetry. The book features eminent Sinologist Jonathan Chaves's translations of more than 130 poems by Seigan and more than 50 by Kōran, each annotated and followed by the original Chinese text. An introduction by Matthew Fraleigh, a specialist in Japan's Sinitic literature, offers insight into the historical and literary context as well as the poems themselves. Defending your faith can sometimes be a subjective thing. As examples of extremes, we've seen the Crusades, and at the other end of the spectrum, it's perhaps an aggressive “pitch” to someone who isn't a believer. The thing is, it's great to be zealous for our faith, but let's also be disciplined. We don't want to alienate a person who might otherwise listen. To put it simply: an angry Christian is usually a lonely Christian. Jude 1:3 says, “Dear friends, I had been eagerly planning to write to you about the salvation we all share. But now I find that I must write about something else, urging you to defend the faith that God has entrusted once for all time to his holy people.” We can defend our faith in a strong way. We can be bold in what we believe, sure of our eternity with Jesus Christ. But our messaging is very important. It could be that just having a conversation with someone is the right approach. Don't feel pressure. Don't press. Jesus has the job of saving; we just have to be available to share about Him. Let's pray. Lord, please always remind us to share the Gospel with love. In Jesus' name, amen. Change your shirt, and you can change the world! Save 15% Off your entire purchase of faith-based apparel + gifts at Kerusso.com with code KDD15.
