To elaborate, each “love language” can, at an implicit level, become a repository for past hurts if it is not grounded in robust self-love. When expressions such as giving gifts, words of affirmation, or physical touch become the primary mode to signal care, they may mask a deeper insecurity: an unhealed wound from childhood or relational trauma.

BIBLE IN TEN

Wednesday, 23 April 2025   He said to them, “Make room, for the girl is not dead, but sleeping.” And they ridiculed Him. Matthew 9:24   “He said to them, ‘You withdraw! For not she died, the damsel, but she sleeps.' And they derided Him” (CG).   In the previous verse, Matthew noted that when Jesus came into the house, He saw the pipers and those tumultuating. Now Matthew continues the thought, saying, “He said to them, ‘You withdraw!'”   In place of the idea of withdrawing, Mark's gospel reads a bit differently, saying, “When He came in, He said to them, ‘Why make this commotion and weep?'”   There is no contradiction because both thoughts can easily be sewn together. Matthew focused on one thing, Mark on another. Thus, the entire thought could be expressed as, “When  He came in, He said to them, ‘Why make this commotion and weep? You withdraw!'” Understanding this logical and harmonious sequence of thought, Jesus continues with, “For not she died, the damsel, but she sleeps.”   In these words, Jesus uses a new word to describe the girl, korasion. It is a diminutive form of the word koré, a maiden. It will be seen only in Matthew and Mark. As an explanation of the word, Strong's Lexicon says –   “The term ‘korasion' is used in the New Testament to refer to a young girl or maiden. It is a diminutive form, often implying youth or smallness, and is used to describe a girl who is not yet of marriageable age. The term is used in contexts that highlight the innocence and vulnerability of young girls.”   A word that suitably translates this Greek word would be damsel. As for Jesus' words, in saying that she is not dead, it would be misleading unless the thought is fully understood. The girl is dead in the sense that her soul has departed. There was no life left in her body. However, because of Jesus' power and authority, she was not “dead and gone.”   Rather, like Lazarus in John 11, he was dead but with the surety of being restored to life –   “When Jesus heard that, He said, ‘This sickness is not unto death, but for the glory of God, that the Son of God may be glorified through it.'” ... Then His disciples said, “Lord, if he sleeps he will get well.” 13 However, Jesus spoke of his death, but they thought that He was speaking about taking rest in sleep. 14 Then Jesus said to them plainly, “Lazarus is dead. 15 And I am glad for your sakes that I was not there, that you may believe. Nevertheless let us go to him.” John 11:4 & 12-15   Understanding the usage of the word by Jesus, He replaces the thought of death with that of sleep. Those gathered to mourn, however, knew what the state of being dead meant and what it looked like. Being mourners, they would have been around enough dead to identify the state with ease. Therefore, hearing Jesus' words, they would have thought He was off His rocker. Thus, it says, “And they derided Him.”   Not knowing who Jesus is or the power He possessed, it would be like any other person coming into a bedroom or morgue where a dead person lay. The life had departed, and the end had come. If the person said, “This child is alive,” it would be a ridiculous proposition, and those hearing it would scold the speaker and tell him he had no idea what he was talking about.   However, the difference between such a scenario and the arrival of Jesus is infinite in scope. The Lord God had entered the death chamber.   Life application: It is extremely difficult for us to get our minds around the state of death. This is especially true when it is sudden and unexpected. Here is a vibrant child, brother, friend, coworker, etc. Each day you get up, and he is there. His not being there is the last thing one would think of because we are geared towards normalcy in such situations.   However, there may come a day when that person is suddenly dead. When this occurs, our minds actually shut down in various ways. The process of accepting that death has occurred can take a while. Even if we know it is true, we keep resurrecting the memory of the life that was, trying to reinstate it and mentally overcome what has taken place.   Eventually, there is the thought of complete loss because the state of death is fully accepted, and the connection is severed. Depending on the person, there are all kinds of things our minds will then make up. There are scenarios where the person is “in a better place,” is free from some enemy he may have faced (such as a physical limitation of some sort), etc.   For the Christian dealing with a departed believer, however, there is no need to make up such things in the mind. They are actually a reality that exists. The Bible absolutely assures us that because of Jesus, believers have entered a state of sleep that is only temporary in nature.   Whatever physical or mental trials we faced in life are set aside. And whatever supposed permanency the state of death brings about for others is voided in Christ. In Him is life. When a person comes to Jesus through belief in the gospel, His life is transferred to that person. The physical death we experience cannot overcome the spiritual life we have been granted.   Therefore, when the call is made at Jesus' coming, it will be impossible for the believer to remain physically dead. Jesus' word is the command of life. Nothing can override it, and nothing can block what He commands. Have faith in this. In Christ, death is defeated. Our separations may be painful, but they are temporary blips on the way to eternal glory –   “But I do not want you to be ignorant, brethren, concerning those who have fallen asleep, lest you sorrow as others who have no hope. 14 For if we believe that Jesus died and rose again, even so God will bring with Him those who sleep in Jesus.” 1 Thessalonians 4:13, 14   We are so grateful to You, O God, for giving us life, even while we live in these bodies of death. Unless Jesus comes first, we are set to return to the dust. But because of what He has accomplished, that will be a short nap leading to an eternal state of wonder and delight. Death? No fear here! Jesus has prevailed. We shall rise again. Hooray for Jesus! Amen.

Matthew 9:9

BIBLE IN TEN

Tuesday, 8 April 2025   As Jesus passed on from there, He saw a man named Matthew sitting at the tax office. And He said to him, “Follow Me.” So he arose and followed Him. Matthew 9:9   “And Jesus, passing thence, He saw a man sitting upon the tax-booth, being called Matthew. And He says to him, ‘You follow Me.' And, having arisen, he followed Him” (CG).   In the previous verse, it noted that the multitudes marveled and glorified God who had given such power to men as to heal the paralytic. As noted, the healing was both physical and spiritual. Jesus had said that the man's sins were forgiven. The fact that He healed the man physically substantiated His words concerning forgiveness. Thus, the crowds marveled. Next, it says, “And Jesus, passing thence.”   A new word is found here, “paragó.” It is derived from para, beside, and agó, to lead, bring, carry, etc. Therefore, it signifies “to lead near.” Strong's Lexicon says –   “The verb ‘paragó' is used in the New Testament to describe the action of leading or bringing something or someone alongside or past a certain point. It can imply a physical movement or a metaphorical passage, such as the passing of time or events.”   To understand the metaphorical meaning, Paul says in 1 Corinthians 7:31, “For the form of this world is passing away [paragó].”   Looking at the eight literal uses of the word in the gospels, each gives the sense of passing near a person or persons who become a part of the ongoing narrative. Such is the case here where Matthew next records, “He saw a man sitting upon the tax-booth.”   Here is another new word, telónion. It is derived from telónés, the dreaded tax collector who seems to pop up in every society. In this case, the word telónion refers to his place of business. Today, we might say “tax office.” In the case of Israel at the time, it was probably a booth or a table where taxes were collected. Of this person, a typical dreaded and disdained publican, it next says, “being called Matthew.”   In Mark, the name is Levi the son of Alphaeus. Luke simply calls him Levi. They are the same person, but Matthew anticipates his designated apostolic name at this time. In the selection of the apostles, both Mark and Luke will call him Matthew. Of him, he next records, “And He says to him, ‘You follow Me.'”   Although it is only speculation, it is possible that this calling actually comes after some sort of previous interaction. It may be that Matthew has heard Jesus speak, or they may have personally conversed about some matter or another.   Whatever is the case, Jesus knew that this person was ready to leave his duties as a tax collector and take on a completely different pursuit. And so, it next says, “And, having arisen, he followed Him.”   Matthew made the wisest decision he could possibly have made. He may not have even realized it at the time. Or it may be that in hearing that this man could forgive sins (based on the previous passage), he may have thought, “This is what I need. I'm a reprobate to my society and a sinful man.” Whatever prompted him, he heard the call and responded.   Life application: There is a calling to come to Jesus to be saved. If you have responded to that through belief, you are saved. But there may be an additional calling upon you. You may have the inner desire prompting you to become a missionary, tell others about the word, become a preacher, or plaster your car with Jesus bumper stickers.   Whatever you are prompted to do, if it is glorifying of God and not contrary to the Bible, don't quench it. Rather, respond in a manner that will get the ball rolling and then continue to do what is necessary to keep it going. Fan the flames of the passion within you.   Matthew was asked to follow, and He did. You may have been designed by God in your makeup, time, position, etc., to follow Him in a particular way. So, get up and go!    As a bonus concerning tax collectors and what Matthew was brought out of, take time today to listen to Taxman by the Beatles. A couple thousand years after Matthew was brought out of his life of taxing others, people still write about what they think about this profession. If a taxman can be called by Jesus to do other, greater things, so can you.   Lord God, You have called sinners to come unto You through the precious shed blood of Christ. I'm a sinner! I responded on that glorious day. Now, help me to continue to follow closely beside You all my days. To Your glory, I pray. Amen.

BIBLE IN TEN

Play Episode Listen Later Jan 17, 2025 8:02

Friday, 17 January 2025   “Therefore I say to you, do not worry about your life, what you will eat or what you will drink; nor about your body, what you will put on. Is not life more than food and the body more than clothing? Matthew 6:25   “Through this, I say to you, not you disquiet your soul – what you may eat and what you may drink, nor your body – what you may don. Not more, it is, the soul the food and the body the apparel?” (CG).   In the previous verse, Jesus spoke of the unrealistic nature of serving two masters. Now, still speaking in the same general context, He says, “Through this, I say to you, not you disquiet your soul.”   Jesus uses the verb merimnaó, disquiet. It is derived from the noun merimna, signifying care, worry, anxiety, etc. Thus, the verb signifies the act of such things as being anxious, worrying, etc. The word single word disquiet gives the proper sense. It would be comparable to saying, “Don't get your soul all riled up over this. Next, He tells what to not be disquieted over, saying, “what you may eat and what you may drink.”   How do these words fit the context of serving two masters? The answer is that if one is serving money, meaning he is seeking earthly treasure, he will naturally worry about his food and drink. It doesn't matter how rich one becomes, he learns to live at that level of wealth. For a millionaire to decrease in wealth by a dollar is more painful than for a poor person who has nothing to lose.   The poor saved person has to trust in God for his daily needs, whereas the wealthy millionaire trusts in his riches to provide them. He is serving the master mammon. In the case of food and drink, the poor person will be willing to eat whatever comes his way, whether off the tree or off the ground.   He is satisfied with the nourishment. On the other hand, the rich person would not dare to eat something without it being washed, properly sliced, laid out in a nice pattern on a plate, and set with the appropriate utensils. He cares less about the nourishment than the setting in which it is provided. He forgets that the food is ultimately being eaten for its nutrients, regardless of how it is obtained and set forth. Continuing on, Jesus next says, “nor your body – what you may don.”   It is another new word, enduó, to put on clothing. It is derived from en, in, and dunó, to sink. Thus, one gets the sense of sinking into a garment. Therefore, it is to don one's clothing. One can see the etymological connection to our modern words endue and endow.   The same truth exists with wearing apparel as it is with eating and drinking. A rich person will worry about every thread being perfect, keeping the garment perfect, and having lots of garments that he anxiously must choose from to impress others.   On the other hand, a poor person may have just one garment. It may be torn, filthy, stinky, etc. When it rips, he will hand mend it, not caring what type of stitch he uses or what color thread was obtained to do the repair. He is grateful for the blue thread on his brown garment, whereas the rich man would be in a fit if the seamstress did such a thing.   He may yell at her, threaten her in some way, and go home skulking that his beautiful garment was treated so poorly. He may toss and turn all night about the situation. On the other hand, the poor man will sleep sweetly in his stinky old rags.   Jesus then says, “Not more, it is, the soul the food and the body the apparel?” The answer is obvious, it doesn't matter what kind of food you eat or what type of garments you wear. They don't make the person. Each is a temporary part of his existence that will pass away in due time.   Life application: Of the new word enduma, apparel, a word derived from enduó, noted above, Strong's Lexicon says –   “In the ancient Greco-Roman world, clothing was an important indicator of social status, occupation, and identity. Garments could signify wealth, authority, or religious devotion. In Jewish culture, clothing also had religious significance, with specific garments prescribed for priests and other religious functions.”   Nothing has changed. The quest for wearing the best clothing is the quest for popularity, fame, a following on social media, etc. In churches, priests and bishops are robed in super special cassocks that are highlighted with rachets. On their heads, they wear big poofy, pointed miters, etc.   These and other garments supposedly set them off as pious men of God filled with super religiosity. With the ending of the Mosaic Law, there is nothing prescribed in Scripture to physically set a pastor, priest, or preacher off from the rest of the congregation. And yet, in order to set these people apart, they are given these garments.   Unfortunately, as has been seen throughout history, such garments often adorn people whose hearts are far from God. They are money grubbers, perverts, predators, and highly arrogant in their demeanor.   The exquisite garments of the social elite are often lipstick on pigs. They adorn people whose hearts are self-centered and filled with pride and haughtiness. But in the masses of people who just live their lives quietly in regular clothing and who humbly come before the Lord with their requests for the meeting of their daily needs, there is fellowship and closeness with God.   Who is in the better standing? The answer is obvious. Be content with your station in life. Improve it if you can, but don't fret over what you don't have. Through Jesus, the Lord has given you all you need for an eternity of delight in His presence.   Lord God, thank we come before You with thanks for the many blessings of this life. You give us food to satisfy our bodies, you provide flowers on our path as we walk, and You give us rain, sunshine, cool breezes, and little puppies. How good You are to us, O God. Amen.

Thursday, 16 January 2025   “No one can serve two masters; for either he will hate the one and love the other, or else he will be loyal to the one and despise the other. You cannot serve God and mammon. Matthew 6:24   “None, he is able, to serve two lords. Or – for he will detest the one and he will love the other. Or – he will enclasp one, and the other he will disesteem. Not you are able to serve God and mammon” (CG).   In the previous verse, Jesus noted that when your eye is bad, your whole body will be filled with darkness. He further exclaimed how great that darkness will be. Continuing on, He next says, “None, he is able, to serve two lords.”   The word is douleuó. It signifies bondage or slavery. It refers to the service of such a person. To think that one slave could have two masters whom he served is out of the question. This is both from a standpoint of practicality as well as fealty. In such a case, Jesus next says, “Or – for he will detest the one and he will love the other.”   His words again explain the matter of storing up treasures, whether on earth or in heaven. A slave will adhere to one master and reject the other. But if they are both his master, it would cause a real conflict for him, one that would come with insurmountable problems.   Such is the case with storing up wealth. If one is trying to store up treasures both on earth and in heaven, he will place his affections on one over the other. It is the inevitable result of divided allegiances. To reconfirm what He just said, Jesus next restates the matter, this time placing the positive first, followed by the negative, saying, “Or – he will enclasp one, and the other he will disesteem.”   The first word, antechó, translated as enclasp, means to cling to, hold firmly, or hold against. One can see someone embracing his favored master. The second word kataphroneó, translated as disesteem gives the sense of despising or scorning. He will look down on the unfavored master and even actively insult him. It is the word the author of Hebrews uses when describing Jesus' attitude towards the trial He faced in His passion –   “Therefore we also, since we are surrounded by so great a cloud of witnesses, let us lay aside every weight, and the sin which so easily ensnares us, and let us run with endurance the race that is set before us, 2 looking unto Jesus, the author and finisher of our faith, who for the joy that was set before Him endured the cross, despising [kataphroneó] the shame, and has sat down at the right hand of the throne of God.” Hebrews 12:1, 2   Jesus embraced doing His Father's will, despising the shame that He had to face in order to do as the Father sent Him to do. Jesus says that not having this attitude is what it is like when one tries to serve two masters. To fully confirm this as a precept He next says, “Not you are able to serve God and mammon.”   HELPS Word Studies defines mammon as a Semitic term for “the treasure a person trusts in.” Thayer's Lexicon associates it with the Hebrew word aman, to trust. When one places his trust in wealth, that is where his allegiance will be. As such, when serving mammon, a person will not trust God. Likewise, when one trusts the eternal God, the riches of this life will be understood for what they truly are, meaning temporary and fleeting.   Life application: As has been noted before, there is nothing wrong with having wealth. In fact, when one possesses wealth, it should be considered a blessing from God. However, the opposite is not to be considered true. When someone is not wealthy, it does not mean that God doesn't favor them.   That attitude is a trap that too many fall into. Just because someone receives a blessing, such as finding a large gold nugget on the side of the road, it doesn't mean God loves him more than the person walking with him who found nothing. It was simply a blessing that God laid out in His creation and the person to the right happened to be there to find it.   Suppose two people started roofing businesses. They both start on a similar level with the same existing conditions. However, when one of them gets his first job, the home owner happens to be a very influential person. The roofer does a good job and the house owner uses his influence to recommend this new roofer to many people. He becomes successful and wealthy.   On the other hand, the second roofer gets his first job with a plumber. He does a job just as well as the first roofer, but the plumber doesn't have any real influence. Likewise, all the others who hire him over the years are just regular Joe's. He never gets the big contracts or recognition of the other roofer even though he has faithfully done comparable work.   The first roofer received a blessing in life that changed the course of his company. Was it really his business prowess or just a grace that came upon him apart from himself? The answer is obvious. Who will each give their credit to for what they have? Seeing how people respond to the incidents in life that happen to them will show where their true loyalties lie.   In the end, no matter how little or much we are blessed in this life, we should give honor, thanks, credit, and glory to God for what we do have. This is how we will earn our rewards in heaven. Faith is the key. When we demonstrate faith, God will be pleased to reward us accordingly.   Lord God Almighty, our days are numbered and You have seen them all before the first came to pass. But we are living in the stream of time, unknowing of what lies ahead. Help us to have faith in You during this walk, understanding that You are always there with us, carrying us along until the day we stand before You for our rewards because of trust in what Jesus has done. Amen.

Saturday, 11 January 2025   “Do not lay up for yourselves treasures on earth, where moth and rust destroy and where thieves break in and steal; Matthew 6:19   “You amass, not – yourselves – treasures upon the earth, where moth and an eating – it evaporates, and where stealers – they tunnel, and they steal” (CG).   In the previous verse, Jesus explained what was correct concerning proper fasting. He finished that thought with the idea of being rewarded by the Father. Now, He builds on that, beginning with, “You amass, not – yourselves – treasures upon the earth.”   The rewards from the Father are where the true treasures lie. What we amass here is earthly and, thus, temporary and fleeting. In this clause, He introduces a word into the New Testament, the verb thésaurizó, to story up, treasure up, save up, etc. A single English word that carries these ideas is amass.   This verb stems from the noun thésauros which was first used in Matthew 2:11 and which is used again here, translated as “treasures.” One can see the etymological connection of both words to our modern word thesaurus. Of this verb, the Strong's Lexicon says –   “In the ancient Greco-Roman world, wealth was often measured by one's ability to accumulate and store goods, such as grain, precious metals, and other valuables. The concept of storing treasures was not only a practical concern but also a reflection of one's status and security. In the Jewish context, treasure could also refer to spiritual wealth, such as wisdom and righteousness, which were seen as more enduring than material wealth.”   Nothing has changed in this regard. People amass wealth in various ways as if it is a means to an end. But there is no useful end when such things cannot be taken beyond the day of one's death. Jesus is telling His disciples not to treasure up such treasure upon the earth. One of the problems with such wealth is that such is “where moth and an eating – it evaporates.”   Two more new words are found here. The first is sés, moth. It is believed to come from the Hebrew word meaning moth, sas, which is found only in Isaiah 51:8. The second new word is brósis, a word almost always translated as “rust,” but that is an explanatory paraphrase. This word is derived from the verb bibróskó, to eat. Thus, it signifies the food one eats. The noun form would be “eating” as in “That durian fruit is a delicious eating.”   Jesus is telling the disciples that moth and an eating will cause the wealth to evaporate. It is the same word, aphanizó, that was used in verse 6:16 to describe the pall-like faces of those who fast for everyone to see. Jesus finishes the words of this verse, saying, “and where stealers – they tunnel, and they steal.”   Again, three new words are found in this single clause. The first is kleptés, a stealer or thief. Next comes the word diorussó, to dig through or break through. Of this word, Strong's Lexicon says –   “In the ancient Near East, homes were often constructed with mud-brick walls, which could be relatively easily breached by thieves. The act of ‘digging through' a wall was a common method for burglars to enter a house and steal valuables. This cultural context highlights the vulnerability of earthly treasures and the need for vigilance.”   As such, a single English word that properly conveys the intent is the verb form of “tunnel.” When one tunnels through a wall, he gains access to the treasures inside. And that leads to the third new word, the verb kleptó, to steal. It is the basis of the noun kleptés that was just used.  One can see the etymological root of klepto, kleptomaniac, and other associated words that we use today.   Jesus is explaining to His disciples the futility of storing up things that can be stolen away through the physical corruption of the items or the moral corruption of others who are bent on taking such for themselves.   Life application: Jesus has told His disciples that they should not store up wealth for themselves. And yet, elsewhere, Paul says –   “Command those who are rich in this present age not to be haughty, nor to trust in uncertain riches but in the living God, who gives us richly all things to enjoy. 18 Let them do good, that they be rich in good works, ready to give, willing to share, 19 storing up for themselves a good foundation for the time to come, that they may lay hold on eternal life.” 1 Timothy 6:17-19   Paul does not say they cannot have wealth, but not to be haughty or trust in their wealth. This sounds like a contradiction to Jesus' words about not storing up wealth. But the context says it is not. Jesus is not commanding us to not have wealth.   He is instructing on what is of value. He will do this throughout the synoptic gospels, speaking to those under the law about what should be the priorities of life. When He dies in fulfillment of the law, the age of Grace will come through the New Covenant. The things that are impossible for man under the law are set aside.   The man who is not under law but under grace should have the proper priorities to act responsibly, understanding that he was saved by grace and that this world is a temporary steppingstone to the true riches that lie ahead. The resurrection of Jesus Christ assures us of this.   O God, we are grateful for every blessing You bless us with in this life. Some of us may have great wealth, but help us to remember that such things are not where our hope lies. It is all temporary and fleeting. Our true hope lies in the resurrection of Jesus Christ, which reminds us that we, too, will be brought to You through His work on our behalf. Help us to always live with this in mind. Amen.

I'm Stacey Simms and every other Friday I bring you a short episode with the top diabetes stories and headlines happening now. XX Big news from Sana Biotechnology. Their first in human study of islet cells without any immunosuppression appears to be a success. This is very early and hasn't yet been peer reviewed and published.. but after four weeks, there were no safety issues and the transplanted beta cells were producing insulin. Sana's CEO says  “As far as we are aware, this is the first study showing survival of an allogeneic transplant with no immunosuppression or immune-protective device in a fully immune competent individual. Safe cell transplantation without immunosuppression has the potential to transform the treatment of type 1 diabetes and a number of other diseases.”   I've reached out to Sana to get more on this.. love to talk to them soon.   https://www.bakersfield.com/ap/news/sana-biotechnology-announces-positive-clinical-results-from-type-1-diabetes-study-of-islet-cell/article_d0390fd6-99cb-53bd-b04d-9337121e01bf.html XX FDA says no for sotagliflozin as an adjunct to insulin therapy for glycemic control in adults with type 1 diabetes (T1D) and chronic kidney disease (CKD).  Studies showed a meaningful reduction in A1C but a meaningful increase in DKA. The FDA first rejected this in 2019 and was resubmitted last summer. But The advisory committee voted 11 to 3 against the approval of sotagliflozin stating that the benefits of sotagliflozin do not outweight the risks in adults with T1D and CKD. Sotagliflozin is currently approved under the brand name Inpefa to reduce the risk of cardiovascular death, hospitalization for heart failure, and urgent heart failure visit in adults with 1) heart failure; or 2) type 2 diabetes mellitus, CKD, and other cardiovascular risk factors.  According to Lexicon, Inpefa will continue to be manufactured and made available to patients. https://www.renalandurologynews.com/news/fda-denies-approval-of-zynquista-for-type-1-diabetes-and-ckd/ XX Two companies we've been following are teaming up.. Modular Medical has an FDA clear patch pump and Nudge BG has an adaptive full closed loop. They've announced a new partnership agreement. From the release: Modular Medical's easy-to-use and cost-effective MODD1 insulin pump technology. Our combined system is intended to nudge blood glucose by making small changes to insulin delivery based on estimated glucose inputs from a continuous glucose monitor." Familiar name to some of you, Lane Desborough is the founder of Nudge BG. He says this will be a fully automated system, no mealtime bolusing needed.   https://www.accesswire.com/957703/modular-medical-announces-licensing-and-partnership-agreement-with-nudge-bg XX Beta Bionics filed for an initial public offering on Monday. The company did not disclose the number of shares it will offer or the price range. Beta Bionics plans for shares to be listed on the Nasdaq under the ticker symbol “BBNX.” The Irvine, California-based company makes an insulin pump called the iLet Bionic Pancreas, which was cleared by the Food and Drug Administration in 2023. Beta Bionics plans to use the proceeds to grow its sales and manufacturing infrastructure and develop new features for its device.   https://www.medtechdive.com/news/beta-bionics-insulin-pump-files-ipo/736805/     XX Tandem Diabetes Care, Inc. signed a multi-year collaboration agreement with the University of Virginia Center for Diabetes Technology (UVA) to advance research and development efforts on fully automated closed-loop insulin delivery systems.   There's a long history here – UVA is where the Control IQ algorithm was developed.  This agreement seems to keep the team together for another decade. https://www.businesswire.com/news/home/20250107162995/en/Tandem-Diabetes-Care-Enters-Multi-Year-Research-Collaboration-with-UVA-Center-for-Diabetes-Technology-for-Development-of-Advanced-Insulin-Delivery-Systems XX New study says insulin is still the best treatment for gestational diabetes, compared to oral glucose-lowering medications. Metformin and gluburide are being closely looked at since they're easier to administer, less costly, and have better acceptance among patients. But this study says insulin was a bit better – slight more babies were born larger for the metformin group, and more moms had hypoglycemia. https://www.medpagetoday.com/obgyn/pregnancy/113651 XX In its Citizen Petition to the FDA, Novo Nordisk argued that there is no clinical need to allow compounding for liraglutide, the type 2 diabetes injection it sells as Victoza. Novo Nordisk last month filed a Citizen Petition with the FDA asking the federal agency to exclude its type 2 diabetes injection Victoza (liraglutide) from a proposed list of drugs eligible for compounding. https://www.biospace.com/fda/novo-launches-citizen-petition-to-block-compounded-victoza XX Bit of an update on compounded terzepatide and semaglutide. The FDA is allowing a grace period of 60 days before starting to enforce the end of allowing compounds of Mounjaro. Meanwhile, semaglutide remains on the FDA's shortage list for several dose strengths, though all doses have been reported as “available” since late October 2024. Compounding pharmacies, especially larger 503B “outsourcing facilities,” maintain they provide an essential public service by offering lower-cost versions of medications that can cost over $1,000 per month. Many insurers still refuse to cover brand-name GLP-1 products for weight loss. Yet  the FDA has reported hundreds of adverse event reports allegedly linked to compounded versions of these drugs, which do not undergo the same rigorous manufacturing inspections and clinical testing as approved brands.   https://www.drugdiscoverytrends.com/compounders-and-drugmakers-clash-over-compounded-weight-loss-drugs-with-fda-in-the-middle/ XX Interesting story here.. this study says a fecal transplant can help people with type 1 and severe gastroenteropathy. The researchers say diabetic gastroenteropathy commonly affects individuals with type 1 diabetes, causing debilitating symptoms like nausea, vomiting, bloating, and diarrhea; however, treatment options remain limited. Researchers conducted a novel clinical trial to test the benefits of FMT in adult patients with type 1 diabetes and severe symptoms of gastroenteropathy, who were randomly assigned to receive either FMT or placebo capsules as the first intervention. After four weeks, Compared with placebo, FMT led to significant changes in the diversity of the gut microbiome. https://www.medscape.com/viewarticle/fmt-shows-early-success-type-1-diabetes-bowel-issues-2025a10000bg XX A couple of weeks ago, listeners told me that the Dexcom geofencing issue we reported on seems to be resolved. Dexcom is now confirming this. Previously, if you had an issue with Dexcom G7 outside of your home country, you couldn't reinstall or use the app without customer support. As of last month, the geofencing issue has now been resolved with the latest Dexcom G7 2.6 app update. Can I travel with my Dexcom G7? | Dexcom XX Abbott and Dexcom settled all patent lawsuits related to continuous glucose monitors (CGMs). The two competitors, who lead the U.S. market for CGMs, agreed on Dec. 20 to resolve all outstanding patent disputes and not sue each other over patents for 10 years.   Dexcom and Abbott previously reached a settlement in 2014 related to their diabetes devices, which included a cross-licensing deal and an agreement not to sue each other until 2021. After that agreement expired, the companies filed a volley of patent lawsuits. https://www.medtechdive.com/news/abbott-dexcom-settle-cgm-patent-lawsuits/736300/

Wednesday, 1 January 2025   In this manner, therefore, pray: Our Father in heaven, Hallowed be Your name. Matthew 6:9   “Therefore, thus you – you pray: ‘Our Father, the ‘in the heavens,' it be hallowed – Your name” (CG).   In the previous verse, Jesus said that the Father knows what you need before you ask Him. Therefore, rather than focusing on the needs, focusing on other things is appropriate. When these are the main words of one's prayer, it demonstrates proper priorities exist. And so, Jesus begins with, “Therefore, thus you – you pray.”   The meaning of the word thus is that this is a model prayer, meaning, “in this manner.” However, Luke more precisely says, “When you pray, say...” This would then indicate a repetition of Jesus' words. Either way, the substance is what should be focused on. Understanding that, He begins the prayer, saying, “Our Father.”   The idea of God as the Father is one that takes on several connotations in Scripture. He is the Father of creation and, thus, humanity. He is the Father of Israel (Exodus 4:22). He is the Father in the sense of love, discipline, sanctuary, and so much more. In this case, Jesus is speaking to His disciples within the context of the community of faith.   This appears more certain based on what it says in John 8 –   “Jesus said to them, ‘If God were your Father, you would love Me, for I proceeded forth and came from God; nor have I come of Myself, but He sent Me. 43 Why do you not understand My speech? Because you are not able to listen to My word. 44 You are of your father the devil, and the desires of your father you want to do. He was a murderer from the beginning, and does not stand in the truth, because there is no truth in him. When he speaks a lie, he speaks from his own resources, for he is a liar and the father of it. 45 But because I tell the truth, you do not believe Me. 46 Which of you convicts Me of sin? And if I tell the truth, why do you not believe Me? 47 He who is of God hears God's words; therefore you do not hear, because you are not of God.'” John 8:42-47   It is doubtful Jesus would extend His word here to those of Israel who were not truly a part of the community of faith. With that noted, He next says, “the ‘in the heavens.'”   In other words, it is an affirmation that this is not an earthly father. Nor is it a symbolic father, such as a priest (as in Judges 17:10). The words are a prayer to the One in heaven with whom a filial bond exists because of faith. Because of this bond, which rightly calls out for a son to humble himself before his Father, Jesus next says, “it be hallowed – Your name.”   Here, Jesus introduces the verb hagiazó, to hallow, into Scripture. Strong's Lexicon says the word “means to sanctify or make holy. It involves the act of setting something or someone apart for a sacred purpose or dedicating them to God. In the New Testament, it is used to describe the process by which believers are made holy through the work of the Holy Spirit, aligning them with God's will and character. It also refers to the consecration of objects or places for divine use.”   In this case, it is a hallowing of the name of the Father, treating it with absolute holiness as well as expecting it to be treated in this manner by others. Of this hallowing of His name, some scholars try to insert the idea of the Trinity into Jesus' words. This does not seem like a sound approach to what Jesus is saying.   The concept of the Trinity, though a valid doctrine in Scripture, was not yet developed at this time. Rather, the term Father is being used as an appellation or designation of God in general. This would be in accord with Paul's words of 1 Corinthians 8:6, which say, “yet for us there is one God, the Father, of whom are all things, and we for Him; and one Lord Jesus Christ, through whom are all things, and through whom we live.”   It is true that there is God the Father within the Trinity, but the words here refer to God, the Father of the community of faith. As such, Paul's words there and elsewhere are not to be taken as a separation between God and Jesus, as if Jesus is not God, but a distinction within the Godhead.   As a way of grasping this, a human government might be considered a fatherly entity. Of it, someone might say, “We have one father (the various branches of authority) ruling over us and one office of propaganda to establish us.” A distinction is made within the government even though the office of propaganda expresses the entirety of the government's decisions conveyed to the people.   Life application: When discussing the nature of God, or when evaluating statements about God that are recorded in Scripture, care needs to be taken to ensure that we do not stray from what is explicitly expressed elsewhere.   For example, in the Bible, it is explicitly stated that there is a Father who is God. However, it is also explicitly stated that the Son is God and that the Spirit is God. And more, it is clearly seen that the Father is not the Son and the Father is not the Spirit, nor is the Son the Spirit. As these things are explicit, we cannot deny the concept of the Trinity without falling into heresy.   As this is so, then when verses seem to separate Jesus from God (as may be wrongly implied from 1 Corinthians 8 above), we must strive to understand what Paul is saying. Jesus is clearly expressed elsewhere as God and yet He is referred to in addition to God in that verse. Therefore, Paul is teaching us something about the functioning within the Godhead.   It is our duty to accept what the Bible explicitly teaches and then to work within that framework to understand the nuances of words that are affected by those explicit references. When we do this, we will keep from error or outright heresy.   Lord God, we can get easily confused or even led astray by evaluations of Your word that are not in accord with what is clearly revealed. Because of this, we pray that You lead us to sound instruction through teachers and commentaries that are in accord with what is correct. Please keep us from error as we consider who You are and what You have revealed to us in Scripture. Amen.

Monday, 30 December 2024   And when you pray, do not use vain repetitions as the heathen do. For they think that they will be heard for their many words. Matthew 6:7   “And praying, not you shall stammerer-speak just as the ethnicities. For they think that in their verbosity they will be heard” (CG).   In the previous verse, Jesus spoke about the appropriate way to pray, meaning by doing it in secret. Now, He provides another example of how not to pray, beginning with, “And praying, not you shall stammerer-speak.”   It is a word found only here in Scripture, battalogeó. The word is said to be from battos, a proverbial stammerer, and logos, word or speech. As such, it signifies to stutter or prate tediously. Some identify the first half of the word as coming from the Aramaic word battah, meaning idle or vain. Thus, translations will say something like the NKJV, “vain repetitions.”   Either way, the point is made. People are not to just babble out prayers as if they become more important by the many words or repetitions that come forth. As Jesus says, this is “just as the ethnicities.”   He uses the word ethnikos, ethnicities. Of this word, Strong's Lexicon says –   “In the first-century Greco-Roman world, the term ‘ethnikos' was used to distinguish between Jews and non-Jews. The Jewish people were set apart by their covenant with God, marked by practices such as circumcision, dietary laws, and Sabbath observance. Gentiles, or ‘ethnikos,' were those who did not follow these practices and were often seen as outsiders to the faith community. The early Christian church grappled with the inclusion of Gentiles, as seen in the Jerusalem Council (Acts 15), which addressed how Gentile converts should be integrated into the predominantly Jewish Christian community.”   Thus, the word refers to any of the ethnic groups of the nations separate and distinct from the Jewish nation. Hence, it is translated at times as pagans, heathen, nations, Gentiles, etc. The word ethnicities is a direct translation into modern English, the word being the etymological ancestor of our modern word. Of these people, Jesus next says, “For they think that in their verbosity they will be heard.”   Here is another word found only this one time in Scripture, polulogia. It is a singular noun derived from polus, much or many, and logos, word or speech. The word verbosity rightly translates this word. However, by using the two Greek words as a basis for a new word, someone could be inventive and say polylog or the plural polylogs.   Such a word would be a nice addition to the English language to describe many in the church today. Charismatics and Pentecostals are famous for such prayers. But this type of behavior is not exclusive to them. It is fashionable in many other churches and denominations to continuously repeat words and phrases. Watching Christian TV might lead someone to think their video was broken because the same thing is repeated ad nauseam at times.   Because Jesus says, “For they think that in their verbosity they will be heard,” He is indicating that this type of prayer is perfectly pointless. If something is prayed to God only once, it will be received by Him. Babbling repetition has no more effect than the first prayer that was uttered to Him.   Life application: Repetition can be a good thing for learning and memorizing. However, if something is continuously repeated too often or in too short of a time, it can become an annoying distraction. And yet, for some reason, when people pray, that principle is tossed out the window.   It is as if shouting out repetitive words or phrases somehow makes people think they will be perceived as more holy than others or maybe more in tune with God. However, Jesus says that just the opposite is true when He equates this conduct to the ethnicities.   As the church is now the focal point for proper worship of God, why would we bring the bad habits of the past into our worship of the Lord now? Instead, there should be an attitude of respect, honor, and glorification of God when we speak to Him. To inanely babble off repetitions to Him is actually demeaning because we make it seem as if He is too dull to get our prayers the first time.   Let us not find ourselves with this type of attitude. Instead, all things should be done in proper order and in a manner that acknowledges His ability to adequately receive and process our prayers without overloading the spiritual airwaves with our polylogs.   Lord God, may the words of our mouth be pleasing and acceptable to You at all times. May our prayers to You be respectful and honoring of You. Help us in this, O God. Amen.

Sunday, 22 December 2024   And if you greet your brethren only, what do you do more than others? Do not even the tax collectors do so? Matthew 5:47   “And if you embrace only your brothers, what extra do you do? And do not the taxmen, the ‘himself' they do?” (CG).   In the previous verse, Jesus noted the pointless nature of expecting rewards when you love those who love you, noting that even tax collectors do that. Now, He continues that thought, saying, “And if you embrace only your brothers.”   He uses the word aspazomai. Strong's Lexicon says, “Derived from a (as a particle of union) and a presumed form of spao (to draw); meaning to enfold in the arms, i.e., to greet or embrace.” Although most translations simply say greet, salute, hail, or something similar, the word indicates a hearty welcome where the arms enfold around someone.   Today, we might grab someone, pull him closer, put one arm around him, and then give him a pat on the back. It is a welcome that demonstrates felicity. When greeting a brother like this, Jesus questions them about it, asking, “what extra do you do?”   The obvious answer is, “nothing.” It is what everyone who greets a brother or a friend does. This is so obvious that He next says, “And do not the taxmen, the ‘himself' they do?”   Some manuscripts use the word ethnikoi, those from non-Jewish ethnicity, rather than telonai, taxmen, as was seen in the previous verse. Either way, the point is made. Jesus uses an example of someone who is considered contemptible by the Jews, demonstrating that this is what everyone does, regardless of culture, social status, etc.   He will next finish the chapter with words that sum up His thoughts on the matter that He has been addressing.   Life application: There are various ways that manuscripts will wind up with differences in them. In the case of Matthew 5:47, what seems likely is that it was a case of dittography. This is where a letter or word is repeated by accident. In the Greek NT Text, the final sentence is almost identical except for one word, translated as tax collectors by the NKJV: ἐὰν γὰρ ἀγαπήσητε τοὺς ἀγαπῶντας ὑμᾶς, τίνα μισθὸν ἔχετε; οὐχὶ καὶ οἱ τελῶναι τὸ αὐτὸ ποιοῦσιν; καὶ ἐὰν ἀσπάσησθε τοὺς ἀδελφοὺς ὑμῶν μόνον, τί περισσὸν ποιεῖτε; οὐχὶ καὶ οἱ ἐθνικοὶ τὸ αὐτὸ ποιοῦσιν;   For if you love those who love you, what reward have you? Do not even the tax collectors do the same? And if you greet your brethren only, what do you do more than others?Do not even the tax collectors [ethnicities] do so?   When translating verse 47, the Greek copyist looked up, his eyes probably glanced at verse 46 by accident, thus writing taxmen a second time instead of pagans or ethnicities. This is obviously speculation, but somehow an error crept into one of the two texts.   To understand why there are various differences in the biblical texts, take time to read up on copyist errors. Along with dittography, some of the errors you will discover are haplography (omitting a repeated letter or word), metathesis (reversing letters or words), homeoteleuton (skipping a section due to similar line endings), and homeoarchy (skipping a section due to similar beginnings of lines).   These and other copyist mistakes frequently crept into texts. Does this mean that the word of God is tainted? Not at all. It is there, but we must spend time and careful consideration to determine why the error occurred and which is the original. Though disputed by various scholars, the original exists.   The Greek New Testament has thousands and thousands of manuscripts. Add in lectionaries, commentaries, and other ancient sources, and the originals can be determined. God has allowed fallen man to handle His word. Because of this, errors in transmission can be expected. But diligence and perseverance will lead to a fuller and closer understanding of what was originally given under inspiration of the Spirit.   Lord God, thank You for those who have carefully recorded Your word over the ages, passing down what You originally gave us so that we can understand what You have done in the giving of Jesus. Help us to diligently search out Your word and faithfully transmit it to those around us so that they, too, can know. Amen.

Merriam-Webster's Word of the Day

Merriam-Webster's Word of the Day for October 25, 2024 is: euphoria • yoo-FOR-ee-uh • noun Euphoria refers to a feeling of great happiness and excitement. // The initial euphoria following their championship victory has since subsided. See the entry > Examples: “Ciara picked up the crown where it had landed. It was warm, but more than that, the metal seemed to pulse somehow, like it was a living thing with a heartbeat of its own. It almost buzzed in her hands and she felt a gentle euphoria, simply holding it.” — Juno Dawson, The Shadow Cabinet: A Novel, 2023 Did you know? Health and happiness are often linked, sometimes even in etymologies. Today euphoria generally refers to happiness, but it comes from euphoros, a Greek word that means “healthy.” Given that root, it's unsurprising that in its original English uses euphoria was a medical term. A medical dictionary published in 1881 (The New Sydenham Society's Lexicon of Medicine and the Allied Sciences), for example, defines euphoria as “well-being, or the perfect ease and comfort of healthy persons, especially when the sensation occurs in a sick person,” and the second edition of our own unabridged dictionary published in 1934 labels euphoria as a psychological term meaning “a sense of well-being and buoyancy.” The idea of buoyancy also connects to the word's Greek roots: euphoros comes from a combination of the prefix eu-, meaning “well” or “easily,” and the verb pherein, meaning “to bear.” Modern physicians still use the term, but euphoria has since entered everyday usage as a word for happy feelings so intense one feels borne aloft—that is, as if one is floating on air.
