Have you ever thought about the privilege you hold as a white woman? It's Women's History Month. As we celebrate the progress we've made as women, we also need to acknowledge that work still needs to be done and discuss why we might be the ones holding ourselves back. Being raised by strong and self-made women, and only realizing my own privilege in my 40s, I was inspired to become an activist when I attended the 2017 Women's March. Yes, I was a late bloomer. As the COVID-19 pandemic hit women particularly hard, I was reminded of the systemic inequalities that women still face in society, from unequal pay to lack of access to childcare. Inspired and determined, this episode is a call for all women to come together and fight for representation and equality in all areas of society.  In this episode:Why it's never too late to get involvedThe systemic inequalities that women face in societyThe role of privilege in the fight for progress and equalityWhy women's voices are essential and more powerful than we thinkThis episode at a glance:[03:28] Systems of oppression are in place, alive and thriving bias exists. And we need to keep talking about it and raising awareness because without acknowledging there's a problem, you can't fix the problem [05:52] That imposter syndrome I was feeling was more about me being concerned about what I looked like. Then being a stand, a representation of something bigger than myself. [08:20] The pandemic highlighted the systemic inequalities that women face in society. And though we've made significant progress in the last few decades.  We still face significant challenges in the workplace.[10:07] We need to invest in women's education and skills development and in women growing and building their own businesses to ensure that they have the same opportunities as men. [12:50] Don't beat yourself up for being late to the game. It's never too late. Every voice makes a difference and your voice makes a difference. Resources and Links mentioned in this episode:Outrageous Acts and Everyday Rebellions National Organization for Women - organization dedicated to advancing women's rights through advocacy, education, and litigation. The Women's March -  movement that aims to harness the political power of diverse women to create transformative social change. The Girl Up Campaign - UN Foundation initiative that empowers girls to become leaders and advocates for gender equality.Dawn AndrewsContact us You might also like:Getting Out of Your Own Way Why Female Leaders Supporting each other is the FutureBrave Conversations Workbook More about the “My Good Woman” podcastMy Good Woman is a podcast for bold female leaders hosted by me, Dawn Andrews! Part 2: As a college student, Andrew Akira Hansen loves chemistry so much that he takes his experiments out of the lab and into the parking lot... and the shower... and anywhere else he could. Saad Sarwana is a Physicist and Stand-up Comedian. As a physicist he works in superconductor electronics and is the author of over 40 peer reviewed publications and the inventor behind two US patents. As a comedian he has been doing standup and Improvisational comedy for over 20 years, and even won a Moth StorySlam. For 6 years and over 100 episodes Saad was on the Science Channel TV show “Outrageous Acts of Science”. He is also the creator and host of the 'Science Fiction and Fantasy Spelling Bee'. Previously he has told Physics and Math inspired stories for the StoryCollider. This chemistry inspired story completes the Trilogy! He lives in Westchester County, NY with his wife and kids. Andrew Akira Hansen is an external chemist and a boy who finds himself falling more and more deeply in love with the natural world as he survives each day. Chemistry is the language he’s learned to love it with. After finishing his bachelor's degree at Knox College he messed around in Southern Illinois University Edwardsville's master's program for chemistry. From there, he’s worked a variety of chemistry-adjacent jobs he never imagined he’d find himself in, including space camp instructor, beer scientist and slime master (not all official titles). His path in chemistry has been winding, and he can't wait to see where it takes him. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices

Today my guest is Paul Zak, scientist, prolific author and public speaker. Paul is - what I just love, he wrote the book, The Moral Molecule: The Source of Love and Prosperity in 2012, and literally, he discovered oxytocin. Now what is oxytocin? This was a landmark neurochemical that he discovered was the driver of trust, love and morality. That was a key differentiation for our humanity, and so this made him very popular and he's gotten the nickname Dr. Love. Now, what does this mean for his latest book called, Trust Factor: The Science of Creating High-Performance Companies? As a scientist, his decades of research have taken him from the Pentagon, to research with the three-letter agencies, to the rain forests of Papua New Guinea - all in the quest to understand the neuroscience of human connection, human happiness and effective teamwork. It's through his lab and testing that he's developed and deployed neuroscience technologies to solve real world problems experienced by people, especially in this today's times of exponential technologies. What I love is that those things that we had a hunch about now, he's validating through technologies. Now, what's this about trust? Because there's a big thing going on now that this is the most disengaged workforce in a long time. Much of it is because of the lack of trust. So, what is oxytocin? Experiments have shown that when you have a higher sense of purpose stimulates oxytocin production, as does trust. Trust and purpose, then mutually reinforce each other, providing a mechanism for extended oxytocin release, which produces happiness. So joy on the job comes from doing purpose-driven work with a trusted team. I could go on and on, but I want to let Dr. Paul Zak do most of the talking related to this. Because I think that for leaders, that this is super important. Leadership now, especially for many of the CIOs and technology and digital transformation leaders, the imperative for leaders today is to create this engagement within their teams and within their people. I've had a pattern now with a couple of different podcast interviews talking with people that are top in their field. Here is one of the top scientists in the this field that is talking about how to do this. One of it is creating this peak immersion. Creating an immersion can be contagious and leaders; of course can't just bestow immersion on people. Leaders must embody it, they must be plugged into it themselves. This creates this factor, which allows an organization to take on this resonance, which differentiates you and your organization and your teams within the business and within the marketplace. Well, I want to bring you Paul today because Paul is going to give you practical examples, practical tools and really get you thinking about this topic deeply. So with that, I want to introduce you to my conversation with Dr. Paul Zak. Paul’s two decades of research have taken him from the Pentagon to Fortune 50 boardrooms to the rain forest of Papua New Guinea.  All this in a quest to understand the neuroscience of human connection, human happiness, and effective teamwork.  His academic lab and companies he has started develop and deploy neuroscience technologies to solve real problems faced by real people. His latest book, Trust Factor: The Science of Creating High Performance Companies, uses neuroscience to measure and manage organizational cultures to inspire teamwork and accelerate business outcomes.  His 2012 book, The Moral Molecule: The Source of Love and Prosperity, recounted his unlikely discovery of the neurochemical oxytocin as the key driver of trust, love, and morality that distinguish our humanity.   In another obsession, Paul’s group uses neuroscience to quantify the impact of movies, advertising, stories, and consumer experiences.  Along the way, he has helped start several transdisciplinary fields, including neuroeconomics, neuromanagement, and neuromarketing. This special episode features my live conversation with activist, writer and feminist organizer, Gloria Steinem and Oakland-based artist and activist Favianna Rodriguez. The legendary Gloria Steinem is the author of several best-selling books, was a founding editor of and political commentator for New York Magazine and a founding editor of Ms. Favianna Rodriguez’s art and collaborative projects address migration, economic inequality, gender justice, and ecology. Favianna is also the Executive Director of CultureStrike, a national arts organization that engages artists, writers and performers in migrant rights. Gloria, Favianna and I spoke on stage at the Castro Theatre in San Francisco on February 21st, 2019 as part of Women Lit, a program of the Bay Area Book Festival. Gloria’s book of essays--now in its third edition--and the occasion for our conversation--is called “Outrageous Acts and Everyday Rebellions”--and there is no better or more timely theme! In this conversation we talked about the ongoing fight for equality, how much has changed--or not--since Gloria wrote those essays between the 1960s and the 1990s...and how to create the future we envision! This live event was made possible in part by EO essential oils bath and body care products and of course, my home station KALW in San Francisco, and PRX. Giving is a radical act. Jackie Lau (https://jackielaubooks.com, https://twitter.com/JackieLauBooks, https://www.instagram.com/jackielaubooks/) joins us for a lively conversation. We talk about indie vs. traditional publishing, writing ethnically diverse characters respectfully, writing humour that eschews damaging stereotypes, and having a great sense of place in a story. Margrit watched Outrageous Acts of Science (https://www.sciencechannel.com/tv-shows/outrageous-acts-of-science/) because hashtag children on holiday, but liked the diversity of the cast of scientists who comment on the intrepid amateur experiments. Lin enjoyed Crazy Rich Asians (http://www.crazyrichasiansmovie.net) for its authentically East-Asian scenes and its entertainment value. As a consumer of Asian media, Lin is baffled at how surprised Western audiences were by the quality of this film, and questions why the behind-the-scenes names were not as predominantly Asian as the cast. Question of the Episode: Have ever found a book or a TV show with a great sense of place that transported you there or made you want to visit? Part 2: Science writer Leah Shaffer discovers an interesting way to manage her chronic illness -- hookworms. I was pleasantly surprised to find Outrageous Acts of Danger on the Science channel features a reasonable amount of science and makes it interesting. It does this by making otherwise common science demonstration absurdly dangerous. One recent episode riffed on the classic physics demo in which you hang a heavy ball (bowling balls are common) on a wire and release it near someone's head.
