Our friend Vaneetha Risner was bullied as a child, suffered multiple miscarriages, buried a son, has had to deal with a debilitating disease, was left by her first husband and has struggled with single parenting. She understands what it’s like to deal with loneliness, fear, discouragement and tragedy that feels pointless. But she also knows all about the grace of God who meets us, transforms us and changes others in and through our suffering. She joined us to tackle a tough question: What’s the point of suffering in obscurity? https://www.vaneetha.com/ https://www.amazon.com/Desperate-Hope.../dp/1087775043See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
Our new podcast series on the theme human features shorlisted photographer Federico Ríos Escobar, who aims to shed light on the often overlooked stories from his own country, emphasising the importance of caring for others. His focus is on capturing the causes of migration and the challenges faced by immigrants as they navigate the treacherous Darién Gap. The Darién Gap, once an untouched rainforest, became a congested pathway for migrants on the border between Colombia and Panama. The photographer expresses a desire to give a human face to the immigrants, emphasising that they are risking everything for the bare necessities of life.

We often hear that we need to let go of what we can't control, but where am I letting it go to? What do I trust in if there is no God? The Christian worldview, with God at the center, is the key component to addressing toxic fear. Today on the podcast I'm talking with Nathan Clarkson, who is an actor, best-selling author, filmmaker, mental illness struggler, and real-life friend of mine. He is also the son of Sally Clarkson, is not only a friend and mentor of mine, but we co-wrote the book, Desperate: Hope for the Mom Who Needs to Breathe. I asked Nathan to come on the show because I love how willing he is to talk about his mental illnesses, which include depression, anxiety, OCD, ODD, ADHD, and other learning disabilities, which he shares in-depth about in his memoir, Different. Today we're going to talk about how he has seen God in his “differences”, but we're also going to talk about something that Nathan has been thinking a lot about lately, something in fact that he's currently writing a book on, and that is the struggle that many men have with acknowledging and facing their failures, frailty, and brokenness. Before we get into our conversation, here's just a little bit more about Nathan: He has appeared in national commercials, TV-shows, and major feature films. He starred in the hit faith-based feature-film Confessions of a Prodigal Son which he also wrote and produced, in conjunction with his production company Lighting Dark. Nathan lives in New York City but can often be found in Los Angeles, Colorado Springs, or adventuring around the country and world speaking and sharing his passion for helping people better know their Creator and the story He has for them to tell. Jesus Heals a Woman and Jairus's Daughter And when Jesus had crossed again in the boat to the other side, a great crowd gathered about him, and he was beside the sea. Then came one of the rulers of the synagogue, Jairus by name, and seeing him, he fell at his feet and implored him earnestly, saying, “My little daughter is at the point of death. Come and lay your hands on her, so that she may be made well and live.” And he went with him. And a great crowd followed him and thronged about him. And there was a woman who had had a discharge of blood for twelve years, and who had suffered much under many physicians, and had spent all that she had, and was no better but rather grew worse. She had heard the reports about Jesus and came up behind him in the crowd and touched his garment. For she said, “If I touch even his garments, I will be made well.” And immediately the flow of blood dried up, and she felt in her body that she was healed of her disease. And Jesus, perceiving in himself that power had gone out from him, immediately turned about in the crowd and said, “Who touched my garments?” And his disciples said to him, “You see the crowd pressing around you, and yet you say, ‘Who touched me?’” And he looked around to see who had done it. But the woman, knowing what had happened to her, came in fear and trembling and fell down before him and told him the whole truth. And he said to her, “Daughter, your faith has made you well; go in peace, and be healed of your disease.” While he was still speaking, there came from the ruler's house some who said, “Your daughter is dead. Why trouble the Teacher any further?” But overhearing[a] what they said, Jesus said to the ruler of the synagogue, “Do not fear, only believe.” And he allowed no one to follow him except Peter and James and John the brother of James. They came to the house of the ruler of the synagogue, and Jesus[b] saw a commotion, people weeping and wailing loudly. And when he had entered, he said to them, “Why are you making a commotion and weeping? The child is not dead but sleeping.” And they laughed at him. But he put them all outside and took the child's father and mother and those who were with him and went in where the child was. Taking her by the hand he said to her, “Talitha cumi,” which means, “Little girl, I say to you, arise.” And immediately the girl got up and began walking (for she was twelve years of age), and they were immediately overcome with amazement. And he strictly charged them that no one should know this, and told them to give her something to eat. -Mark 5:21-43
Women put lots of pressure on themselves to handle every responsibility with ease. We need mom mentors to help us navigate the waters of home life, connection with God, and with our kids. Sarah Mae shares how difficult it was for her to care for her home without the guidance of an older woman, and the grace she learned to have for herself through it all.
