On today's episode of The Candice Malcolm Show, guest host Kris Sims covers Pierre Poilievre's landslide byelection win in Battle River–Crowfoot, where the Conservative leader secured more than 80% of the vote. Kris urged Poilievre to oppose the ban on gas and diesel vehicles and to fight the industrial carbon tax. Kris is joined by Christine Van Geyn, Litigation Director of the Canadian Constitution Foundation, to examine how Canadians' freedoms are increasingly under attack in the name of “safety.” They discuss Nova Scotia's sweeping forest closures and massive fines for simply walking in the woods — a policy the CCF is challenging in court — and how government overreach chills free expression. Kris and Christine also highlight the disturbing trend of municipalities cancelling permits for Christian worship events. They point to the case of Sean Feucht, an American worship leader who has been coming to Canada for two decades without issue, suddenly finding his events targeted and shut down by local governments. Cities across the country have either pulled his permits or denied them outright, often citing vague safety concerns or labelling him too controversial. Christine warns that this is a clear example of censorship-by-bureaucracy, where politicians and officials hide behind process to silence voices they don't like. She stresses that freedom of religion and freedom of expression apply to all Canadians, and that governments should not be allowed to discriminate against speech or worship just because it may offend some people. They also discuss Christine's new children's book, Maple's Garden, which teaches kids about free expression and why it is the foundation of every other liberty we enjoy. As Christine explains, without the ability to speak freely and gather peacefully, Canadians lose the most powerful tool they have to hold government accountable. Learn more about your ad choices. Thanks to your generous donations, the WOKV Careathon raised $400,000 for the Child Cancer Fund. Items are still available in the Careathon Auction until noon, or you can always make donations at CHILDCANCERFUND.ORG. On behalf of Carla Montgomery at CCF, Duval Asphalt, and WOKV, thank you Jacksonville!
Bearing false witness has application far beyond a court room. It involves the way we use words in all dimensions of our lives. In this sermon, we explore three of those important areas.
Sarah Kurtz joins Careathon to talk about Vystar's support of the Child Cancer Fund. Julia shares her family's experience with having a child fighting cancer, and how the CCF helps take some of the burden off of them. To donate, call 855-636-6877
Heather and 15-year old Bentley talk about the feeling of first finding he was diagnosed with Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia at the age of 10. They also share the relief that the CCF brings. As Bentley says "GO BIG" if you choose to donate, just call 855-636-6877
Eden joins Careathon to share how Gate became involved with supporting the CCF, as well as how it is helping her family during this time as her daughter is going through treatment for her cancer.
Ian Tietjen returns to support the Careathon for the Child Cancer Fund. He shares the story of his daughter Marina, who was diagnosed in 1999 but sadly passed in 2004. To keep her memory alive, and to help other families in their cancer journey, he continues to support the CCF resource like Ms. Joli, Camp Boggy Creek, and more. You can honor Marina and help local families by calling 855-636-6877 or texting "WOKV" to 707070.
31 years ago, an original CCF founder, Laura Ferrante's family faced the challenge of pediatric cancer. Now, many years later, in partnership with Mike Hopkins of Paul Davis Restoration and the Child Cancer Fund, have secured funding in perpetuity for Ms. Joli's position of Child Life Specialist, a care position with direct interaction with patients -- and according to everyone who has worked with Joli Carver ("Miss Joli"), she's one of the best parts of the treatment process. Miss Joli's toys and games are part of the extensive care services kids receive, and is indicative of the kind of wrap-around care that embodies the Child Cancer Fund. Paul Davis Restoration is a proud sponsor of the Family Spotlight.
Dr. Schilling joins Careathon to share how CCF funds can be used for patient mental wellness. This can include tutoring, patient and family counselling, discussing treatment concerns, animal therapy, and so many other elements to supplement clinical care. You can support this wrap-around care by donating to the Child Cancer Fund at 855-636-6877.
Stealing involves taking what others own. The effects of this are great. It destroys things that we value. In this sermon, we explore those effects.
The nonprofit world is changing FAST - and the way we fundraise, build teams, and connect with communities is being rewritten in real time. If you've been feeling the tension between keeping your nonprofit afloat today and preparing for tomorrow, this episode is a must-listen. In this solo episode, Maria Rio dives into five powerful forces shaping the future of the nonprofit sector and lays out what organizations might look like by 2035. From workforce shifts and AI adoption to government instability and DEI backlash, Maria doesn't sugarcoat the challenges but she also shares smart ways small nonprofits can stay resilient, ethical, and effective through it all. The Future of Nonprofit Organizations: The Highlights The nonprofit workforce is already in crisis....and it's getting worse. Hiring and retention are major hurdles, with salary competition, burnout, and tight budgets making it hard to maintain strong teams. By 2035, nonprofits may rely more heavily on fractional staff and consultants, while in-house roles shrink to essential functions. Fundraising will rely even more on the ultra-wealthy. Donor concentration is increasing. Fewer donors are giving more, and donor-advised funds (DAFs) hold billions in untapped potential. While this creates big opportunities, it also makes funding riskier. A single major donor changing course could disrupt an entire budget. AI is transforming how nonprofits work, but not always for the better. From grant writing to stewardship emails, nonprofits are embracing AI. But too much automation risks alienating donors and devaluing relationships. Stewardship that feels “too perfect” may be seen as inauthentic, and relational fundraisers will become even more critical. Government funding is becoming unreliable and politicized. Nonprofits are facing freezes, layoffs, and rising scrutiny—especially if they advocate for equity. Some governments are threatening charitable status based on political alignment, putting advocacy-focused organizations at serious risk. DEI and CCF efforts are facing backlash but they're not going away. While many staff support Community-Centric Fundraising (CCF) and DEI, boards are hesitant or outright opposed. The result? Tension, watered-down messaging, and even lawsuits. But Maria sees a continued rise in CCF adoption, especially among younger, justice-focused fundraisers.
Sylvia Morrell with Nothing Bundt Cakes and Carla Montgomery from the Child Cancer Fund join JMN. Nothing Bundt Cakes is parterning with the Child Cancer Fund for an opportunity to "round up" your purchase, with the additional amount of your purchase going toward helping local families facing pediatric cancern challenges. One of the key aspects of one's neuroendocrine cancer care is building your medical team, which typically includes a medical oncologist. In this episode, Medical Oncologist Dr. Sandy Kotiah from Mercy Medical Center in Baltimore expounds on the role of a medical oncologist. She sheds light on the first appointment, communication, and care coordination. TOP TEN QUESTIONSWhat is your role in the neuroendocrine cancer world? What is your role with your medical team? What is a medical oncologist? What training is involved? Is a medical oncologist the same thing as a hematologist oncologist? What's the difference between a medical oncologist & surgical oncologist (& radiation oncologist)? What is a NET expert and how does someone become a NET expert? When I'm looking for a NET expert, what type of doctor am I looking for? How do I know if I'm with a “NET expert”? If I call a medical institution, will I automatically get assigned to a “NET expert?” If someone tells me they are a “NET expert,” does that mean that person is a NET expert? What can I expect on my first appointment? What type of information do you try to communicate with your patients during the first appointment? Newly diagnosed patients often come to their first appointment feeling scared and overwhelmed. They wonder “how long do I have,” worry about how fast the cancer is growing, and are unsure of what to tell their family and friends. How do you address these concerns? What questions should I be asking my oncologist?When/how often should I see my medical oncologist? Who goes over my scan results with me? When does that happen/How soon after a scan should I expect results? Who communicates the tumor board discussions? How is care coordinated with other providers on my team within the same institution? How is care coordinated with other providers from different institutions (i.e. with a local oncologist and a NET expert)? What happens if someone wants a second opinion? How do you feel about second opinions? How do I navigate or work through a situation in which there are differing opinions between doctors? If I have a question, concern, or symptoms, who do I communicate with and what's the best way to communicate? What if we “run out of time” during an appointment? What if it's a question or concern I'm shy about communicating? Some people struggle with trust because of past experiences with providers who might have ignored or minimized their symptoms. What advice do you have to help build trust with my doctor? What would you say is my responsibility as a patient and your responsibility as the oncologist? If there is one thing you would like all people living with neuroendocrine cancer to know, what would it be?For more information, visit NCF.net.

Faviola "Favi" Ramirez is a community organizer, often with BIPOC outdoors. Brooke Thomson is the development director at Abortion Care Network. Favi and Brooke have been part of the Community-centric fundraising movement, including a group sharing and based in Minnesota. Favi and Brooke join the podcast to talk about the origins of community-centric fundraising, and help to define it with some of the ten principles defined on the CCF website. Concepts of indigenizing giving and grant-making, beginning the work with an audit of existing donor pages of website looking at terms of "we" rather than "you", valuing all contributions including those of time rather than money, and much, much more! Favi mentions TRUTH project the as one community-centric process that recognizes the colonial nature of land-grant universities but looks to indigenize the conversation.
If a friend suddenly refuses to speak to you and you don't understand why, it may be that they were not a good friend in the first place. But if it keeps happening with several friends, the evidence points to something in you – a blind spot, or an unconscious habit of saying or doing something that hurts other people – that pushes people away. In this video, I respond to a letter from a woman who is scared to consider that SHE may be the one who is damaging connections. Do You Struggle to Connect with People?: FREE PDF Download: https://bit.ly/3LcjDD8
When I started teaching about trauma I never expected that one of my biggest challenges -- feeling like I didn't fit in with other people -- was actually a common trauma symptom. If you have CPTSD or you have trouble feeling connected with others, you're going to want to see this. Do you have CPTSD? Take the QUIZ: FREE PDF Download: https://bit.ly/3X9MZ7J
In this video, I respond to an angry comment on my YouTube channel from a woman annoyed that some people appear to accept others' bad behavior, justifying it as "trauma." Hear the comment, and my take on why some people with CPTSD take a hard-ass approach to healing that I call "The Cowboy Response." While she's not very kind, she's not wrong! Do you have CPTSD? Take the QUIZ: FREE PDF Download: https://bit.ly/3X9MZ7J
Healing trauma is more than psychological. It's physical, it's practical -- and here's the part where trauma experts are curiously silent -- it's spiritual. Abuse and neglect are injuries to the spirit, and where we are spiritually injured, a vulnerability opens to further harm from destructive people, and even from our own self-defeating behaviors. This is how the battle between good and evil is waged in our own lives, and in this four-video compilation, I share four of my most popular videos teaching how you can work with the power of good through prayer, meditation, courage and the willingness to take courageous actions to transform the damage that was done to you. Ten Signs Your Trauma Is Healing: FREE PDF Download: https://bit.ly/3raZghI
I make it VERY clear that I'm not a therapist or doctor, but sometimes viewers ask why I didn't go the route of becoming a therapist, and how I learned to do what I do. In this video, I give the full story on how I recovered from my own Complex PTSD symptoms, and how teaching my method grew from a few people to millions of people over the course of 30 years. My focus is not on childhood or the origins of trauma (this is the special expertise of licensed clinicians). Rather, I focus on practical ways to regulate the nervous system, and principles and techniques to get your life together and NOT fall into the old self-defeating behaviors that used to drag you down. Need Online Therapy? https://betterhelp.com/CCF Try the FREE Daily Practice Course: FREE PDF Download: https://bit.ly/3Y4263I
Everyone, not just traumatized people, gets dysregulated sometimes. And virtually everyone eventually re-regulates. But if you were traumatized at a young age, it can cause you to get dysregulated more easily than other people, and stay dysregulated longer. How can you do this ON THE SPOT? In this video, I teach you my expanded list of emergency measures to re-regulate. This is super helpful for people with CPTSD, or who need to "act normal" in a stressful situation. Learn Quick Measures to Get Re-Regulated: FREE PDF Download: https://bit.ly/3YBrIVg
When you're into someone but you hide how you really feel, don't be surprised when the reality of the situation smacks you down. People who were traumatized as kids are particularly vulnerable to this “just friends” behavior. And unhealthy people can detect that in us – the way we see what they just did and -- and how we pretend it didn't affect us. In this video, I respond to a letter from a woman who is getting strung along by a "friend" with JUST enough hope to keep her from leaving. 10 Things Romantic Manipulators Say: FREE PDF Download: https://bit.ly/3ZcUnkm
The stories you tell yourself are an expression of what YOU believe is important about you. And if you're wedding to saying life is never fair, everyone's terrible, they take advantage of you, you never get a break – this is actually another sign that you might be playing SMALL. It's something that those of us who had a rough childhood can sometimes get stuck in. And while trauma really happened, we don't have to stay identified with it. In fact, as long as we keep telling the sad stories and making those the story of our lives, we run the risk of staying stuck in SMALL. Heal Trauma in Just One Year?: FREE PDF Download: https://bit.ly/3JrPdvx
The Daily Practice is a set of two techniques -- a specific form of writing, followed by a simple meditation, that I was shown 31 years ago when I was in extreme distress after a series of traumas, and was barely able to function. I teach the techniques in a free online course (you can register for it and learn it in less than an hour -- the link is below), and I lead regular free Zoom calls for people who have learned the techniques to try them with me and others, and then I take questions. This video is a recorded call so you can see what it's like. If you'd like to try, it take the free course so you know the techniques (there's a PDF in the course that summarizes it and you can use this to follow along during the call. Once you've registered, we'll e-mail you a schedule and an invitation (also published on my website under the Events tab) to join the calls. It's a lovely community and we hope you'll give it a try. People who were abused and neglected as children sometimes struggle to stay emotionally regulated. Part of healing is to learn to self-regulate; this is a skill that, in substance recovery programs, is called "Emotional Sobriety." Is it the same with trauma? In this 4-video compilation, I share four videos where I teach how the wounds of early trauma can leave you prone to lashing out or getting stuck in anger. How can you tell when you're emotionally "intoxicated", and how can people with CPTSD practice "emotional sobriety? Learn strategies to manage and regulate strong emotions and still express yourself fully. Do you have CPTSD? Take the QUIZ: FREE PDF Download: https://bit.ly/3X9MZ7J
