Faith Over Fear

This is a two-part message. When our worst fears become reality, faith can feel fragile and disoriented. In this episode, Jennifer Slattery sits down with Vaneetha Risner and Angela Mackey to explore how trust in God is rebuilt—not through changed circumstances, but through a deeper awareness of His presence. Vaneetha shares her journey through devastating loss, disability, and abandonment, and how God met her in the place she feared most. Rather than offering quick relief, He revealed something stronger: that His presence is a more secure foundation than any outcome she once depended on. Angela brings a complementary perspective through her “what if to even if” story, rooted in the account of Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego. Walking through profound grief and physical trauma, she wrestled with God honestly and discovered that faith is not the absence of questions but the willingness to cling to Him in the fire. Together, these conversations reframe suffering—not as evidence of God’s absence, but as an invitation to encounter His nearness, deepen trust, and anchor hope in His unchanging character rather than fragile outcomes. Vaneetha Risner grew up believing that faithfully following Jesus would ensure a stable, fulfilling life. So when her marriage collapsed, it didn't just break her heart; it shattered the framework upon which she had built her identity. In this deeply personal conversation, Vaneetha opens up about the layered grief of divorce — a loss she describes as a kind of death that the church too often meets with judgment instead of compassion — and how that pain sat alongside other devastating trials, including contracting polio as a child, losing an infant son, and a later post-polio diagnosis. Though Vaneetha experienced deep heartache and betrayal, her story centers around a renewed and reconstructed faith. She shares how reaching the absolute end of herself forced a new and desperate hunger for God, and how the biblical practice of lament became a lifeline, a place to pour out bitterness without fear of judgment. She offers candid wisdom on forgiveness (including why forgiving too quickly can actually delay healing) and the importance of becoming whole before pursuing remarriage. Listeners will also gain practical insight on how to support others in crisis through her "SHOWUP" framework. When life doesn't go as planned, where do you anchor your soul? In this conversation, Marian Jordan Ellis sits down with writer and speaker Vaneetha Risner—a self-described “sufferer who writes”—to talk about finding a living hope in Jesus through polio and post-polio syndrome, multiple miscarriages, the death of her infant son, betrayal and divorce, and unexpected restoration. Drawing from John 6 (“Lord, to whom shall we go? You have the words of life”), John 9, and 1 Peter 1 & 4, Vaneetha shares how God meets us in the fire, refines our faith like gold, and teaches us to place our hope in a Person, not an outcome. What you'll hear:-- Vaneetha's story: polio as an infant, long hospital stays, grief and losses, and the paradox of joy (2 Cor. 4:17).--Why living hope (1 Peter) is sturdier than “if-this-then-I'll-be-okay” outcomes—and how that shift changes everything.--The refining fire: what gets burned away, what remains, and how Christ's presence becomes tangible in suffering (Dan. 3; 1 Pet. 1:6–7).--Church as the hands and feet of Jesus: practical ways to love people in pain.--Discipleship in hard seasons: daily Scripture, honest prayer, real community—and obedience that blesses enemies.--How suffering kills entitlement and awakens gratitude and wonder.Resources mentioned:Marian's new Bible study: Anchored: The Life & Letters of the Apostle Peter — 7 video teachings + 6 weeks of study.Vaneetha's memoir: Walking Through Fire.If this episode encourages you, share it with a friend, leave a comment with your takeaway, and consider partnering with This Redeemed Life to help us reach more women with the hope of Jesus.#AnchoredPodcast #ThisRedeemedLife #VaneethaRisner #LivingHope #1Peter #RefiningFire #FaithInTrials #ChristianTestimony #John6 #GriefAndFaith #HopeInJesus #Discipleship

In this episode, Broken and Mended Executive Director, David Heflin, shares four ways from Scripture that Jesus identifies with sinners to fulfill his promise to be with us. Even on the days we suffer the most, Jesus is with us. Sometimes our experience may confirm this, and sometimes that experience proves elusive. That's why we start with Jesus' promise (Matt. 28:20) and not our experience. Still, a greater experience of that promise is likely to follow when we commit ourselves to believing it.Scriptures Referenced in the podcast:Matt. 1:22-23Matt. 28:20John 1:1, 141 Pet. 3:18Rom. 6:23John 1:29Matt. 3:13-16Matt. 4:1-11Heb. 4:15Phil. 2:5-11John 14:23David also announces a virtual conference hosted by Broken and Mended on 10/18 with speakers: Dave Furman, Vaneetha Risner, Shannon Cramer, and Aren and Trina Bahadourian! What do you do if much of your pain is caused by your own choices? How do you begin to break free from shame and find God's grace in your past? For author, pastor and Bible teacher, Ines Franklin the journey towards healing has taken some time, but God has been with her every step of the way. Having grown up without a father, Ines found the wounds of her past and her own decisions led her to living with immense shame. She divorced twice, had two abortions, and had been engaged in an affair. When she came to know Jesus, she still carried around the scars that her pain and shame had left on her. As she began to more fully embrace the gift of God's grace in her life and as she told her story more openly, she started to see the shame lift and God used her brokenness to help others. In her latest book, Uncharted: Navigating Your Unique Journey of Faith, Ines looks at how each of us have our own road to walk when it comes to our faith and how even our greatest struggles can be used as a part of God's greater plan for our lives. In this episode, guest host Vaneetha Risner sits down with Ines to discuss how to disentangle shame from our stories, learning to understand God's grace in our lives and the importance of absorbing the pain we've caused others. If part of your pain is because of your own decisions, this conversation will encourage you that God can use even your worst choices to bring about healing and hope for yourself and others.   Website: www.inesfranklin.com Instagram: www.instagram.com/inesfranklin Facebook: www.facebook.com/InesSFranklin Book: Uncharted: Navigating Your Unique Journey of Faith https://a.co/d/3f0keXc Vaneetha Risner Episode 163: https://www.nothingiswasted.com/podcast1/episode-163?rq=Vaneetha Want to learn more about Pain to Purpose? Today we're starting a brand new series called “Blind Spots.” Here's the thing about blind spots: they are, by definition, difficult for us to see—we're blind to them! No matter how much we want to consider our blind spots, we really can't do it alone. Our aim with this series is to gain the insight of those who are able to see so that they can come alongside us and help us identify and humbly repent of the sins we might be blindly entertaining. In today's episode, we're talking about the blind spot of unforgiveness with my friend Vaneetha Risner. Vaneetha's story is an incredible testament to the power of looking to the grace of God to enable us to forgive unimaginably difficult offenses. We pray this conversation encourages you to lean on the Lord for the strength to forgive, even when it's difficult.   DISCUSSION QUESTIONS What has it looked like for you to bear the burden of unforgiveness in your life? What happens in us when we refuse to forgive? What does God do in us when we do forgive? How, specifically, does the gospel compel you to forgive?  How might you lean into God's help as you seek to forgive others?
