What do you do if much of your pain is caused by your own choices? How do you begin to break free from shame and find God's grace in your past? For author, pastor and Bible teacher, Ines Franklin the journey towards healing has taken some time, but God has been with her every step of the way. Having grown up without a father, Ines found the wounds of her past and her own decisions led her to living with immense shame. She divorced twice, had two abortions, and had been engaged in an affair. When she came to know Jesus, she still carried around the scars that her pain and shame had left on her. As she began to more fully embrace the gift of God's grace in her life and as she told her story more openly, she started to see the shame lift and God used her brokenness to help others. In her latest book, Uncharted: Navigating Your Unique Journey of Faith, Ines looks at how each of us have our own road to walk when it comes to our faith and how even our greatest struggles can be used as a part of God's greater plan for our lives. In this episode, guest host Vaneetha Risner sits down with Ines to discuss how to disentangle shame from our stories, learning to understand God's grace in our lives and the importance of absorbing the pain we've caused others. If part of your pain is because of your own decisions, this conversation will encourage you that God can use even your worst choices to bring about healing and hope for yourself and others.   Website: www.inesfranklin.com Instagram: www.instagram.com/inesfranklin Facebook: www.facebook.com/InesSFranklin Book: Uncharted: Navigating Your Unique Journey of Faith https://a.co/d/3f0keXc Vaneetha Risner Episode 163: https://www.nothingiswasted.com/podcast1/episode-163?rq=Vaneetha Want to learn more about Pain to Purpose? Motherhood has a way of revealing our limits, be it physical, mental, or emotional. When we find ourselves at the end of our abilities, it can be easy to wonder if God has equipped us with everything we need to be a good and faithful mom. In this episode, Emily and Laura sit down with Vaneetha Risner to discuss the topic of chronic pain in motherhood. Whether you suffer from chronic pain or disability, or simply find yourself wondering if you have what it takes to make it through another day of mothering, Vaneetha provides gospel encouragement and perspective for the mom who wonders if she's ‘enough' for her children. When we trust that our sufficiency is in Christ, our hearts are freed to steward the gift of motherhood faithfully with what God has given us today. Today we're starting a brand new series called “Blind Spots.” Here's the thing about blind spots: they are, by definition, difficult for us to see—we're blind to them! No matter how much we want to consider our blind spots, we really can't do it alone. Our aim with this series is to gain the insight of those who are able to see so that they can come alongside us and help us identify and humbly repent of the sins we might be blindly entertaining. In today's episode, we're talking about the blind spot of unforgiveness with my friend Vaneetha Risner. Vaneetha's story is an incredible testament to the power of looking to the grace of God to enable us to forgive unimaginably difficult offenses. We pray this conversation encourages you to lean on the Lord for the strength to forgive, even when it's difficult.   DISCUSSION QUESTIONS What has it looked like for you to bear the burden of unforgiveness in your life? What happens in us when we refuse to forgive? What does God do in us when we do forgive? How, specifically, does the gospel compel you to forgive?  How might you lean into God's help as you seek to forgive others? Polio and its lingering effects. Loss of a child due to a doctor's mistake. Infidelity and a broken marriage. Post-Polio Syndrome. These are all hard things for any one person to bear. It's no wonder Vaneetha Risner titled her memoir “Walking Through Fire” and identifies as a sufferer. Yet, it's in and through her suffering where she testifies to the goodness and nearness of God. In this conversation, she reminds us that, as believers, we're not guaranteed an easy life. We're not promised a life void of suffering. But in Christ, we also know that we're not alone in our suffering. God remains unchanging; He is good and near and compassionate. We can find comfort and rest in the character of God as we experience our own suffering. By His grace, joy and suffering can coexist in the Christian life. Take heart! Here are some questions that Vaneetha answers in this interview:   Could you give our listeners a quick overview of the “fire” that you have walked through? (3:15) When we are deeply wounded, we may be tempted to think “God doesn't love me”. Have you ever wrestled with those thoughts? (7:32) How can we find comfort and rest in the character of God in light of our own experiences of suffering? (13:58) How have you dealt with those hard feelings like bitterness and anger and maybe even shame? (17:15) How can joy and suffering co-exist in the Christian life? (21:59) Can you share some ways the local church came alongside you in your suffering? What has the body of Christ taught you about God? (26:23) What word of encouragement would you give to the person walking through deep suffering right now? Vaneetha Risner's story is one you will not want to miss. She is a grace filled woman who identifies as a "Sufferer," through her journey with polio, loss, divorce, and anger with God. Her spiritual maturity to walk us through our suffering and equipping us to meet others in their places of despair is a true gift. We all try to wrap our lives in the most beautiful wrapping paper, but it's not until it gets torn off that we achieve the true gift of what God has for us. www.Vaneetha.com

This week I have the privilege of interviewing Vaneetha Risner -- a woman who has walked through an incredible amount of pain in her life, experienced loss and suffering and yet joyfully says ‘God does not make mistakes.” During our time together Vaneetha shares the story of her son Paul and what her relationship with God looked like after his death. We talk about asking God all the ‘why' questions, why me, why him, why this way? We talk about whether it's ok for Christians to ask God why. We talk about navigating feelings of guilt that come after a baby dies as we relive all the things we could have done differently that would have resulted in our baby living. We talk about what it means to lament, this word we see in the Bible but don't hear very often -- what it means and what it looked like in Vaneetha's life. We talk about what it feels like when God is blessing everyone around you -- does that mean you did something to deserve this or does God love those other people who have not experienced loss more? We discuss the question, where is God in all this, did He cause it? Is He still good? Could He have stopped it and chose not to? Does that make Him a cruel God? We talk about all these spiritual faith questions and more -- if you have been wrestling with similar questions or wondering where God is in all of this, you are going to love this episode and you are going to love Vaneetha. Remember the truths we are sharing here are not from a pious mountain top where everything has gone perfect -- no these truths, the answers and thoughts shared here are from two women who have experienced both pregnancy and infant loss. Vaneetha has endured an incredible amount of suffering and still says, God does not make mistakes. Also, it's ok if you aren't there yet. If you aren't able to say those words. God isn't angry or disappointed with you -- He loves you. He will never leave you. No matter where you are on your faith journey amidst grief, I pray this episode would remind you of God's great love for you, give you the freedom to lament, to sit in your grief, and to cry out to Him with your pain. Vaneetha is the author of the book Walking through Fire which I reference throughout our time together -- in this memoir she tells her story in depth and I highly recommend picking up a copy. It was the first book I've read in a long time that I couldn't put down. Her story-telling and honesty is powerful and hope filled. Vaneetha Risner contracted polio as an infant, was misdiagnosed, and lived with widespread paralysis. She lived in and out of the hospital for ten years and, after each stay, would return to a life filled with bullying. When she became a Christian, though, she thought things would get easier, and they did: carefree college days, a dream job in Boston, and an MBA from Stanford where she met and married a classmate. But life unraveled. Again. She had four miscarriages. Her son died because of a doctor's mistake. And Vaneetha was diagnosed with post-polio syndrome, meaning she would likely become a quadriplegic. And then her husband betrayed her and moved out, leaving her to raise two adolescent daughters alone. This was not the abundant life she thought God had promised her. But, as Vaneetha discovered, everything she experienced was designed to draw her closer to Christ as she discovered "that intimacy with God in suffering can be breathtakingly beautiful." We in the wealthy west prize and even idolize our own abilities and productivity. When we meet new people for the first time we ask, “What do you do?” What we're asking is, what's your job? What are you capable of? How do you contribute to society? If we're really honest we're looking for how to assign that person value. If they do something important we see them as more valuable, more worthy of respect. We all fall into a trap of equating what we can do—our abilities, our productivity—with our identity and worth. The more we do, the better we feel about ourselves. But when this kind of thinking is not corrected and it's allowed to take its natural course, the outcome can be deadly. It's this thinking, this idolatry of ability, that causes us to abort children with Down Syndrome, or to rationalize assisted suicide. The idol of ability is deadly. On this episode we hear from author and speaker Vaneetha Risner. She recently published her memoir Walking Through Fire, in which she shares her story of suffering and how God has met her in it. Her story is powerful, God-honoring, and sharpening for the rest of us to hear, especially in light of our cultural idol of ability. Vaneetha contracted polio as a child in India and was diagnosed with post polio syndrome as an adult. She also bore a son, whom doctors encouraged her to abort, as they knew he would be born with a debilitating heart condition. Her son passed away as a baby, but Vaneetha speaks powerfully about the importance of his life. She shares vulnerably too about marriage, her first husband's affair, divorce, parenting, and remarriage. Vaneetha's life and faith are a testament to our good God and sovereign God. Listen in and be encouraged to think rightly about our bodies and our abilities, God's love for us, and how the Christian life is one of surrender. Most of us believe in God in our minds. We think all the right things, that God is in control, that he is good, that nothing is wasted. But when these beliefs only live in our head, there's only so far they can take us. It's when we walk through intense suffering that these ideas move from our heads to our hearts, and that's when God truly becomes real to us. Vaneetha Risner knows this all too well. Through chronic disease, miscarriage, sexual betrayal, the loss of a child, and more, Vaneetha has come to know God deeply through unimaginable pain.
