What if our presence in ministries and in leadership roles matters more than anything our culture would consider as ways to improve our ranking? Hear Drew's stories and his laughter and his guidance. Take notes. Set healthy goals for your own life. And, as you are, remember to just show up. https://www.drewdyck.com/

How can we glorify God and bless others when we're stretched to capacity? Are we really supposed to change the world when there's work to be done, the house needs cleaning, and the kids are screaming? Today's guest, Drew Dyck, is here to let us all in on a little secret: God doesn't expect you to do everything! He wants you to be faithful, not famous, and just show up in your everyday, ordinary life. That's actually how we change the world! Drew is a writer, speaker, and the author of the countercultural book, “Just Show Up.” Today, he starts by explaining where our misled desire to change the world came from and how social media has led many to believe that “celebrity Christian” status is both desirable and within reach. He shares why self-expressive individualism and authenticity are overrated and issues a call to remember the importance of our roles in others' lives. He ends with a challenge: where are the places that all Christians must “show up” for each other? Listen now! Have you benefitted personally from Truth Over Tribe or seen it have a positive effect on someone you know? have you used the podcast, book, or blog as a catalyst for conversation on polarizing topics? We want to hear about it! Share your story at choosetruthovertribe.com/story. Ok, truth time... Did you like this episode? Tell us by leaving a rating or review!
Ever wonder if your everyday, ordinary life actually matters? If long obedience in the same direction really does pay off? If showing up for worship or for people who are suffering -- even when you don't feel like it or know exactly what to say or do--is the right thing? Drew Dyck joins the podcast to discuss his book Just Show Up: How Small Acts of Faithfulness Change Everything. In this episode, Drew and Suanne cover everything from Drew's midlife crisis to the spiritual idea of plodding to how faithfulness in the small things is often more important than pursuing even our biggest dreams. Drew also shares why it's important to show up in person, how to set boundaries and extend grace when being present isn't possible, and gives listeners a special encouragement to put the screens away and pay attention to the people God has put in their paths.Learn more about Drew and all of his books at drewdyck.com

Few books of the Bible go off the rails as quickly or completely as the book of Job. Before the end of chapter one, there's a cosmic bet and a family left devastated. From there, things get worse! Before chapter two ends, three of Job's friends show up. They'll spend the following twenty-two chapters expressing their ignorance of God and assumptions about their friend. But before they insert a single foot into their collective mouths, they do the smartest thing they could have ever done. Job 2:13 says of those three friends, "They sat with Job on the ground seven days and seven nights, and no one spoke a word to him, for they saw that his suffering was very great." Having spent time sitting with the suffering, mourning with those shaken by loss, and keeping company with those numb from the news of diagnoses, one of the most important lessons I've learned is the one in which Job's friends should have persisted: You don't need to say anything; you only need to be there. That's what our friends who are hurting need more than any words of wisdom we can spout or silver lining we can find in their pain. They simply need someone to show up. There is great peace in realizing that, without saying a word, we can bring the presence of God into their need by just showing up. In this message we go to Psalm 122, accompany King David to worship, and find encouragement from Drew Dyck's new book, "Just Show Up."
Christians are called to live a life that glorifies God and blesses others. How do we do that when we're stretched to capacity? God doesn't require us to change the world. He only asks that we be faithful. We don't have to be perfect, just present. On Wednesday's Mornings with Eric and Brigitte, author Drew Dyck demonstrates how God does incredible things through the persistent presence of ordinary people. Drew shares that "We tend to think it's the big, bold moments that matter. In reality, it's the steady accumulation of small acts of obedience to God that add up to a life of meaning and impact."See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Have you ever felt stressed, burdened, or overwhelmed by all the things you have to do? Then along comes the Church, and our relationship with God, and we look at all the things we “should” be doing, and we see more deficits and feel more guilt. Christians are called to live a life that glorifies God and blesses others. How do we do that when we're already feeling stretched to capacity? But what if God didn't expect you to do everything…and certainly not do it all overnight? What if one of the greatest things we could do for God, our families, our communities, and ourselves, was to “just show up”? We tend to think it's the big, bold moments that matter in life, but in reality, it's the steady accumulation of small acts of obedience to God that add up to a life of meaning and impact. For this month's podcast, we are so excited to have Drew Dyck with us. Drew is an editor at Moody Publishers and the former managing editor of Leadership Journal. He is the author of several books, including Your Future Self Will Thank You: Secrets to Self-Control from the Bible and Brain Science, and his latest work, Just Show Up: How Small Acts of Faithfulness Change Everything. Drew's work has been featured in Christianity Today, Relevant, and CNN.com. He lives near Portland, Oregon, with his wife, Grace, and their three children. As Dean and Drew jump into their conversation, they tackle such topics as: How are Christians called to truly “change the world?” What does it mean to “just show up” for God and others? Why is physical presence with other people so important? How do we grapple with the many distractions in our lives, especially our screens? Why do so many men struggle with being “escape artists”? What is a way to engage in spiritual disciplines without feeling pressure or shame for not doing “enough”? How can our actions affect our mental health, both positively and negatively? What can guys do in times when they find their faith wavering? All this and more in this month's podcast! Enjoy!

In this special Thanksgiving bonus episode, Michelle Visser is joined by Drew Dyck, author of the brand-new book Just Show Up. Grab a copy here: https://amzn.to/3G7ISmlWe chat about the importance of being present in small but meaningful ways. This episode will remind you to be thankful for those who showed up for you in life while encouraging you with practical ways you can do the same.Dyck shares how busy modern life often prevents us from truly showing up for the people and commitments most important to us. He also discusses the concept of "playing a role" even when your heart's not fully in it, because people need you to show up. Visser and Dyck talk about looking back on gaps and mistakes in your life in order to determine how to move forward and fill those gaps for others. Dyck notes that finding your purpose often comes from starting small steps, not waiting for a big sign. You'll also be encouraged to let some commitments slide, so you can be fully present where you need to be. Overall, the episode will encourage you to just show up this Thanksgiving, and trust that life's meaning is found through small acts of faithfulness, not grand achievements. We even share fun tips for making the most of Thanksgiving dinner. Striking auto union workers are quoting the Bible, progressive politicians are citing Jesus, and religious language is returning to more liberal causes. While everyone is focused on the rise of Christian nationalism on the political right, have we been ignoring a resurgence of the social gospel on the political left? Then, Drew Dyck is back to discuss his new book, “Just Show Up.” He says the evangelical culture's focus on changing the world for God warps our vision of a faithful life, and he argues there is deep significance in committing to simple, unspectacular callings. In our discussion we point out easy ways that you can begin to make a big difference with little acts.
If someone puts one more thing on my shoulders, I might collapse. Bestselling self-help book titles tell you that you're brilliant, awesome, and powerful. Do these affirmations feel accurate? Instead of blasting through projects and conquering the world, most of us feel like we're crawling uphill. Moody author Drew Dyck stopped by with some helpful tips on how we can glorify God and bless others when we're feeling stretched to capacity. https://www.moodypublishers.com/just-show-up/ See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
For decades most Americans have said other people cannot be trusted. The exception was regular churchgoers who reported more faith in their neighbors, but new data says attending church no longer boosts social trust. What's changed? Why are political conservatives suddenly talking much less about abortion and much more about transgender issues? Young earth creationists and Christian nationalists are flirting. What's the attraction? Kaitlyn Schiess talks to author and Instagram historian, Jasmine Holmes, about her new book “Crowned with Glory,” and the overlooked story of how Black Christians shaped American history. 93 | Drew Dyck on Self-Control in a Freedom First Culture, Fostering Resilient Faith, Effectively Reaching Communities with no Christian Presence, and the Transforming Power of Spiritual Disciplines.
Knowing God's voice, plus part two of a conversation on self-control, and how to stop imagining worst-case scenarios. Featured musical artist: Stu Garrard Roundtable: Distinguishing God's Voice From Mine As Christians, we want to hear God's voice, but how do we know it's actually Him speaking? We second-guess a decision or direction, or we put out another proverbial fleece, or we wait for a bright light or booming voice — that never comes. Our guests break down their own challenges in hearing from God, including overcoming the paralysis of not knowing who or what to believe. Leave us a Voicemail Culture: Learning Self-Control (Part 2) You started the year with good intentions, but they were short-lived. Now more than halfway through 2023, all of your goals, resolutions, and “I'll do betters” have fallen by the wayside. Fortunately, author Drew Dyck is here to help. He's consulted both the Bible and brain science to find out why self-control is so hard, but also how we can strategically build the muscle to help us form good habits that will go the distance. In part two of our conversation, Drew talks about The Habit Loop, relying on God's strength, and how to beat technology addiction. Your Future Self Will Thank You: Secrets to Self-Control from the Bible and Brain Science Inbox: Help for Overthinkers Our listener is struggling with overthinking things to the point where he imagines scenarios that don't happen. Our producer, John Peardon, is no stranger to this — so he'll encourage us with strategies that have helped him find peace of mind.

On this episode of the FTC Podcast, author and Moody Publishers editor Drew Dyck returns to talk about the ins and outs of Christian publishing, including plagiarism, ghostwriting, and more.
If you've read the Bible all the way through, you know it can be challenging to wake up every morning and get in the Word. It is a big, complex story full of things to learn! Today was a special Karl and Crew Best Of show from our "Fruit Flies" week, and we discussed time management. Reactions to last week's show were strong. The Holy Post crew responds to listener feedback about LGBTQ representation in movies and Al Mohler's defense of conservatism. Former SBC president, Johnny Hunt, was removed from ministry for sexual assault, but last week four ministry colleagues decided it was time to “restore” him. When should disgraced pastors return to ministry, and have congregational and non-denominational churches proven to be incapable of holding toxic leaders accountable? A new Twitter scandal offers more evidence that Christian Nationalism is a mask for racism and misogyny. Then, friend of the podcast Drew Dyck is back to recommend four books covering topics like the formative power of suffering, new medical research about addiction, the best way to read through the Bible, and a novel about Ireland in the 1980s. Plus, Drew's war against fake Christmas trees. A recent article in the Atlantic reveals how the political polarization in the United States is now tearing evangelical churches apart. And Marvin Olasky, the former editor of World Magazine, writes about the dramatic change he witnessed among evangelicals over his long career. Drawing from thousands of letters he received, Olasky concludes, “The Republican party platform has become more important than the gospel for many who identify as evangelicals.” Special guest co-host Drew Dyck joins Phil and Skye to discuss the articles. Then, president of Barna research, David Kinnaman, is back with more stats to unpack. With a record number of pastors thinking seriously about quitting, and political polarization listed among the top reasons, Kinnaman says the church is facing a crisis of discipleship. He believes we need a political theology that's rooted in the gospel rather than partisanship. But is it too late? Also this week, fear over climate change is making progressives question the morality of having kids. And, South Korean college students are flush with cash. Conservative political rallies and protests are increasingly using Christian worship music. How is this different than the role of faith in the Civil Rights movement, and why should Christians on all sides be cautious about attaching God's name to their activism? Then, new data says Trump's presidency dramatically altered attitudes about race and prejudice in America. And Phil, Skye, and Kaitlyn respond to listener questions about last week's episode on Disney and LGBTQ representation. Then, author and editor Drew Dyck is back for another round of media recommendations.
