In this episode, I dive into a very personal and enlightening conversation with Sara Doell, recent bestselling author of Next Time Leave Me on the Floor: My Journey from Drunk AF to Sober AF. Being tired of waking up with hangovers, regret, shame and fuzzy memories of being mean to her wife, she decided to give up alcohol for one year and see what would happen. At the time, it felt like an insurmountable feat yet she woke up on January 1st, 2022 and committed to 365 days of not drinking alcohol. It took a few short months for her to walk away from that goal. Instead she decided to change her path and remove alcohol from her life for good. In her book, Sara reflects on how alcohol became her kryptonite, why she decided to quit drinking and then travels a winding road through her first two years of sobriety. And in this episode, we discuss all of that...and then some! This conversation is a thought-provoking discussion that I think you will enjoy!   ------------- Sara Doell is a CLCC-certified Life Coach, Division I collegiate golf coach, lifetime member of the LPGA, and an Amazon best-selling author of Your Future Self Will Thank You. She grew up in Rochester, New York, attended Penn State University, and played on scholarship for the golf team. After stints in Charlotte, North Carolina and Brooklyn, New York, she found her way to the West Coast. She lives in San Francisco with her wife, Caitlin, and their mini dachshund, Mr. Harvey Milk. This is her second book. --------- Click this link to purchase the book on Amazon.

Hopefully this summer allows you time to rest, relax, and recuperate. But it also provides a season to grow, improve your walk with Jesus, your health, or your relationships. This week Jay provides a Summer Growth Worksheet as well as a set of reminders on what sets us up for successful transformation. Remember the following:   1. If you have too many goals, you’re more likely to fail across the board.   2. An end of summer goal should be challenging, but reasonable.   3. Your goal should consist of daily (or multiple) very doable baby steps.   4. Reward yourself every day you take your daily step.   5. Find a partner or family member to share your plan.   6. Success gives momentum for success.   Resources Mentioned:   Your Summer Growth Plan: http://www.letsparentonpurpose.com/wp- content/uploads/2017/06/Summer-Growth-Plan.pdf   Your Future Self Will Thank You with Drew Dyck: https:// www.letsparentonpurpose.com/2021/01/03/your-future-self-will-thank- you-with-drew-dyck/   How to Start or Stop Any Habit: https://www.letsparentonpurpose.com/ 2019/06/09/how-to-start-or-stop-any-habit/   The Surprising Power of Small Changes: https:// www.letsparentonpurpose.com/2019/06/02/the-surprising-power-of- small-changes/   Falling in Love with the Process: https://www.letsparentonpurpose.com/ 2019/06/16/falling-in-love-with-the-process/   Become a Supporter of Let’s Parent on Purpose! www.letsparentonpurpose.com/support

BEST QUOTES "I see people in ministry as the ones on the front lines.""Test your ideas out on readers first in a short format and then try to graduate to writing a book-length project.""If I start my day with Scripture and a short time of prayer, that makes such a huge difference in the rest of my day when it comes to how I interact with people and my productivity at work.""There are certain seasons, I believe, you just have to get through with your sanity and your morality intact and consider that a win.""It's so easy to neglect those core spiritual disciplines when you are in a busy season.""The best thing about working from home is you can work anytime you want. The worst thing about working from home is you can work anytime you want.""Being disciplined when it comes to stopping working is hard, but essential.""Pay more attention to your character than to your credentials.""Your character is ultimately what is going to safeguard your ministry and your life from destruction." "All the advice in the book is useless if you don't do one thing: get enough sleep.""Sometimes the most spiritual thing you can do is get enough sleep." In Paul's list of the Fruit of the Spirit in Galatians 5 one fruit is clearly overlooked compared to the others: self-control. Though looking through the self-help section of the book store shows how in vogue focus on self-control is, godly self-control has little to do with the self-advancement of a self-help book or it wouldn't be a Fruit of the Spirit of God. Recently Drew Dyck endeavored to make self-control a bigger part of his life. This involved research into how self-control works in our brains, and what self-control means in the Bible. In the process Drew wrote a book I found to be incredibly insightful so we got together to talk through what self-control is, why it's valuable, and how you can move toward having more of it. Links from the episode: —Drew Dyck's book on self-control titled Your Future Self Will Thank You. Highly recommended. —Drew's two previously released books Yawning at Tigers and Generation Ex-Christian. —You can find Drew on Twitter @drewdyck, as well as the podcast host @tylerbraun. About This Podcast Called Out is a podcast focused on areas of misunderstanding and brokenness in both society and the church. With a variety of guests, each episode paints a picture of how Christians can navigate these areas differently to help you be a source of healing and light despite the darkness you see around you.
