This week on Pink Among Men we are pivoting our conversation, slightly, and are joined by our wonderful friend and fellow filmmaker, Hans Augustave. Hans recently released a short visual poem titled Before I Knew, which is a visceral poem on a young Black man's journey of developing in a white world. In this episode, Hans chats with us about micro-aggressions, how he left the pre-med world to pursue his art as well as what it means to be sober curious. Hans Augustave is an up and coming filmmaker who isn’t a stranger to the art of storytelling. His journey has taken him from the art of spoken word, to the stage with his one-man show The Lost and Found and now to the screen with his latest project Before I Knew; a visual poem depicting the subtle and not so subtle ways Black men come to the realization that they are seen as less than Human. Hans is also co-producer on a documentary feature film The Forgotten Occupation which examines the United States’ occupation of Haiti from 1915-1934 and its negative impacts on Haiti’s current politics. The documentary is told through the lens of Haitian-American director Alain Martin, and his complex relationship with his grandfather, a man who lived through the occupation but only spoke fondly of the country that fueled their motherland’s downfall. Hans bit his teeth as a digital video producer for BLUR a startup with an in-house production team. There he directed, shot, and edit dozens of ads for the digital space. He then moved to to the independent film world where he currently works an an Assistant Director. As DJ Hanzi, Hans is the founder of the popular and growing sober-curious dance party, Reprieve. It’s a pop-up Brooklyn party where people leave their souls on the dance floor instead of their puke! It’s part Funk, part House, part Pride, very Black and ALL Love! It’s defying the misconception that no booze & no drugs = no fun. As a DJ for the past 8 years, and sober for the last 2, Hanzi not only brings his knowledge of all music to the party, but he features a different NYC DJ at each uniquely-themed Reprieve. Hans' love for all Humans and for Life itself can be felt when he spreads it through his art, whether in his stories, on set, or while playing music.

Like a ghost from the shadows, he’s back! Yes DJ Hans…the master, the divine one, the broken man. Having just toured the underground scene in Portugal, and Andalucia, his sudden appearance in the Mixed By Monkeys studio was again a godsend. Presenting us with a little one hour treat of deep and underground house recorded live in a grimy sweaty underground that shall stay nameless. Believe it or not, recorded on 100% vinyl records. It hold mysteries and magic of the dance floor both fresh like a newborn babe and old like the rhythmic drums of antiquity. Prepare to have your mind blasted…yet again, by the one and only DJ Hans. So Get Up! Love always, The Drunken Monkey.
In 1991 the strangest event in Dance music history occured. It was staged by the nonconformist and mysterious electronic pioneers known as the KLF. A highly exclusive concert was to take place on the summer solstice of 1991 on the Hebridean island of Jura. Only a small group of the worlds elite were invited. It was no ordinary concert, and the events of that night are now the story of a bizarre and mystical legend. DJ Hans, being at that time a man of mystery and interest himself, was invited. What follows is the true account of that strange ceremony, as told by the DJ Legend himself. Let the journey begin! Love always, The Drunken Monkey.
They say he's broken more hearts than all the men in Europa. They say his passion ignites flames like no other, he is the Casanova of the DJ universe, the heart throb of the dance world. Women adore him and men want to be him. DJ Hans, there is no other. The strongest most silent DJ in the world didn’t utter a word as he handed over this mix. But you could see from his solid pose and the fire in his eyes that this set is dedicated to all the ladies who have ever loved the man of steel behind the wheels of steel. So please let go with all your passion for music and dance! Ladies and gentlemen we give you Hans's Bloody Valentine. Love love love love love love love love love love love love love always, The DrunKen MonKey.
You miss 100% of the shots you dont take. Strong advice that's been used to great effect by such notable Monkey's you may know, such as: Han Solo, Clint Eastwood, DJ Hans, Wayne Gretzky, Chuck Norris and Miss Moneypenny to name a few. The dicey part of the process comes in knowing WHEN to take the shot, and this is what defines a Master from the rest of us. Tricky indeed, but yes you too can learn. Find a Master and follow! Unlearn what you have learned. Be ready so that when your time comes you can make your shot count. So please everyone, dance and enjoy this set mixed by one of the great Masters, DJ Lithium. A DJ never afraid to shoot first! We can all learn a lot from him, with much love and respect to his years of service to the DJ and music scene, and his steadfast dedication to the preservation of vinyl records. So take your shot and mind what you have learned, save you it can! Love always, The DrunKen Monkey.

Everyone loves a surprise ending! You certainly will not see it coming. There are few words to describe the genius behind this, and even greater DJ's wouldn't dare. Then there's Hans, always rollin on the edge. Confused? You must let everything go, and unlearn what you have learned. Dont worry, you'll get it ;) Love always, The Drunken Monkey.

The door opens and none other than DJ Hans steps out! Hans where have you been? Not where, but when he explains, as he hands over a cassette tape...October 25th, 1985. The podcast is saved! Back in 1998 DJ Hans recorded an epic set at the infamous Full Moon party on Sunrise Beach, Koh Phangan, Tailand. It was a bit of a big deal! People laughed, people cried and some believed he was the next messiah. Hans became a legend. It has even been said that in one night, Hans had singlehandedly set the stage for the popular surge in Trance music that lasted the next 5 years and beyond. Tragically the recording was lost. Perhaps taken, gone into the sand, or lost to the wind...no one knows. All Hans remembers is the smell of booze, cheap plastic women, a bright light at the end of a tunnel...then waking up face down in sand 5 days later in Northern Queensland with one missing hand. While legend of the tapes existence persisted, supposedly floating around on some damn thing called the "interweb", it never actually surfaced. Some say that on a full moon night the music can still be heard floating on the winds of the universe. 12 years later, Vancouver, Black Tiger Recordings studio on a full moon night. A dusty beat up package is deliverd by a smiling Buddha riding a white goat. Inside covered in sand is a busted up cassette, the tape is a mess of cut up strands. Is this real or is this just day 3 of Chihuahuan desert peyote? The Buddha becons Hans to follow him into the light at the end of the tunnel... Never one to conform, Hans grabs the tape and slams the door. 7 months later, with a shop vac, 9 rolls of tape, 5 recording engineers and a small team of experts, the recording was recoverd, restored and remastered. It was no small task. Ladies and Gentlemen, you are about to hear for the first time, DJ Hans lost tape of Sunrise Beach! Love always, The Drunken Monkey.
