In Episode 64 I chat with Indonesian psych-soul/funk outfit LAIR and Monica Hapsari about learning to collaborate, comedy frequencies and asking permission to smoke LAIR  (pronounced “lah-eer,” a local dialect for the Indonesian word of ‘lahir', meaning ‘birth' or, roughly ‘being born') is a 6-piece psych-soul/funk outfit hailing from Jatiwangi, West Java, Indonesia. Formed in 2018, LAIR's music takes a sizeable chunk of inspiration from classical/traditional Panturan Tarling, a form of now-grassroot musical/performance art popular amongst the people of the northern coast of West and Central Java. Monica Hapsari is a multitalented artist born in Jakarta. Her contribution to fine arts, fashion, and music has seen her work in various mediums both two and three-dimensional, starting from illustration, textile exploration and on to sound and frequency experiments. In Ngélar—the sextet's sophomore LP— Monica joins the band to explore deeper social narratives and more intimate subject matters in which they speak a lot about ‘tanah' or ‘land/soil,' owing a lot to the fact that their hometown, Jatiwangi's history of being the country's largest producer of clay/terracotta-based products. The people in Jatiwangi's intertwining relationship with ‘tanah' is simply unparalleled—even their instruments are mostly made of terracotta.Produced by Go Kurosawa of Kikagaku Moyo, the album has been released to great acclaim, and the band enjoyed great exposure while on a short North American tour earlier this year which included a stop off at KEXP to record a session which is linked to below. When I  caught up with the crew the band were enjoying a short holiday together and Monica joined us from her home in Jakarta to talk all about their terracotta instruments, avoiding disaster on their tour when their instruments were broken while traveling, the state of the music scene in Indonesia and what it was like working with Go Kurosawa on the record. And they even invited me to join them at their Ceramic Music Festival in Jatiwangi in November. Follow LAIR and Monica Hapsari onhttps://lairggb.bandcamp.com/album/ng-larhttps://www.instagram.com/lairmusik/https://open.spotify.com/artist/5WB1tkUeYbCriTlg3RyBjmhttps://www.instagram.com/monicahapsari/?hl=enhttps://open.spotify.com/artist/20A3XzYQEOFjheUWIfOK6j?si=zLau49gSRqON_Q-92WT6pQhttps://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6Tcc0JGkhZEFollow One More Tune onhttps://www.instagram.com/onemoretunepodcasthttps://twitter.com/onemoretunepodFollow The One More Tune Artist Playlisthttps://open.spotify.com/playlist/1ibJ3ZzmuZGqLW4FB6ZAdD?si=8b41c4aad7804c28Songs Used With Artists PermissionSupport the Show.

Charles Prest, a.k.a. Noon Garden, is a British-Nigerian-Jamaican musician and founding member of the international psych band Flamingods, who have been creating funky psychedelic music inspired largely by the disco, funk and psychedelia that came out of the Middle East, Africa, and South Asia in the ‘70s. Go Kurosawa is a Japanese drummer and vocalist from psychedelic band Kikagaku Moyo. Their sound is full of influences from Krautrock to classical Indian music, and they enjoy singing in an imaginary language. Swedish singer and songwriter Yukimi Nagano is the voice of electronic band Little Dragon. Serra Petale is a drummer and guitarist from international instrumental quartet Los Bitchos, whose love of both garage rock and Colombian cumbia is weaved through their fun and groovy sound. They'll be discussing why they're happiest when they're hitting things, seeing every song you make as if it's your first, the importance of renewal to stay fresh, why you can't be emotionally detached from your music, and the evolution of the demo to release day.

"Kikagaku Moyo" are a psychedelic Japanese rock band originally from Tokyo. The band started out in 2012, living all together in a house in Tokyo and busking outside train stations when they weren't working their day jobs or jamming in the studio. It wasn't long before they wrote and recorded their self-titled debut album, which came together in less than a week. After performing many "pay-to-play" gigs in the heart of Tokyo, they set their sights on Melbourne, Australia, as a place they thought would appreciate their music and live shows. Their trips outside Japan set them on a path with a career in music. Now with half the members based in Amsterdam, and half in Tokyo, "Kikagaku Moyo" have their own independent record label, allowing them to not only put out their own music, but also to champion other underground sounds coming out of their home country. Khana Bierbood - "ลูกรัง / Dusty Lane" from the 2019 album คนแปลกหน้าจากดินแดนบูรพา / Strangers from the Far East on Guruguru Brain. It will come as no surprise that คณะ เบียร์บูด/Khana Bierbood (translated as "Strange Brew" in Thai) is signed to Guruguru Brain, the label founded by Go & Tomo of Kikagaku Moyo. Both bands share a psychedelic surf rock sound, one that Khana Bierbood infuses with traditional Thai influences. Even though the band is 13-years-old now (formed in Bangsaen, Chonburi, way back in 2008), they just released their debut full-length last year, Strangers From The Far East.  Today's Song of the Day was chosen by Tia Ho, Social Media & Digital Community Analyst, who describes the track as "the soundtrack of a spaghetti western in a Thai surf town. DC’s Mike James and Mollie Ames discuss: All terrestrial segments were recorded live on November 6th (Day 311 of 2020), and all podcast segments were recorded live on November 8th (Day 313 of 2020) Part 1 of 3 of the Podcast only content – Common sense clearly isn't for everyone.  Terrestrial: Hour 1 (begins around 0:23:00) Biden won the election but not with any help from the state of Ohio, so we list all the states that voted in a greater percentage for Trump than Ohio, i.e., places that are even worse than Ohio (and noticing most of all the 2 states that use to always be on that list that aren't on it anymore) Randy Arozarena's story is way better than the movie will be, and we're also listing all the almost all white "cities" in Ohio that have a median household income that's higher than what Randy's pro-rated salary was to play this season in a middle of a pandemic. (Hint - There's a lot of them) Part 2 of 3 of the Podcast only content –  In need of a toothbrush jacket. (begins around 1:21:00) Lachlan MacKinnon’s ‘Best of Edition’ Let Me Tell You A Story: “And Still Champion” (begins around 1:39:00) Terrestrial: Hour 2 (begins around 1:45:00) Bruce Sprinsteen did not, in fact, write that incredible poem most everyone is now crediting him for after his reading of it went viral. Your billionaire Cleveland Baseball Team owner who inherited their great wealth, are acting penniless paupers again. But this time around it's looking like they're going to drive the team's payroll to the absolute cellar of all of baseball.  Part 3 of 3 of the Podcast only content –  Mollie’s Weekly Reports: Dr. Amy Acton is willing to kick Mike Trivissono's slovenly ass, and here's hoping she gets a chance to do just that, a dumbass and a pair of handcuffs is always a bad combination, and a lot of things about Alabama needs changed, including their backwards racist constitution that's so big it's going to take years to fix. (begins around 2:40:00) Terrestrial: Hour 3 (begins around 2:56:00)  The annual disappointment called the "NFL Trade Deadline" was scheduled up against the day of the 2020 Presidential Election which made for some awkward moments in sports talk. Mollie’s Weekly Reports, terrestrial edition!  All this and so much more on this episode of the Defend Cleveland Podcast. 🔴 #Fitz12 .

The Bandcamp page housing Kikagaku Moyo’s discography simply describes the band as “feeling good music.” It’s succinct and perhaps reductive to the intricate tapestry of sounds the Japanese band weaves but nonetheless completely accurate. In November, they made a crowd of VIP donors at The Triple Door feel very good while basking in the haze of Kikagaku Moyo’s free flowing psychedelic folk for KEXP’s VIP Club Concert series. Kikagaku Moyo - try saying that after a few sherbets. Well, if you listen on you'll quickly find out that they are our bookend artiste for this week. Psychedelic Western theme music springs to mind, but it's much more than that. It's a bold choice from Tobin but reaffirms his recent run of excellent music. Tobin is certainly on a roll of late and Kikagaku Moyo certainly back up his credentials as music snout. However, as the introduction to the show declares, Tobin is definitely only one half of the show. Richard slams us this week with one man and a guitar. And one man and a guitar. And then one man and a guitar. Save us. But it's not all that bad because one man is Smog, another man is Kristofer Astrom and finally he brings us skateboarding legend Tommy Guerrero.

Kikagaku Moyo started as street musicians in Tokyo. Now, they are one of the most beloved psychedelic bands of our generation. Their music builds bridges between Eastern and Western musical traditions, just like the band members themselves. During the last two years, Kikagaku Moyo lived on the road, touring the US and Europe three times. They also played in China and Australia. "People share values. Everywhere you go, the long-haired people would say something similar," they joke talking with NYLA journalist Martyna Šulskutė at the Devilstone festival in Anykščiai, Lithuania. Aloha people! As the sun begins to sink to the west of Eclectic Kettle, we're trying to bring back some of our favourite guest hosts from over the years. This week it's Johan Oskarsson from 1.21 Gigawatts. This week is also really special as we'll be featuring excerpts of Ben's interview with Super Furry Animals front-man Gruff Rhys. He's here to talk about his new solo record Babelsberg, and his show next week at the Chapel in San Francisco.Gruff is a smart, thoughtful man and one of Ben's all time musical heroes, so this was a treat. The full interview is featured alongside this show as a special standalone episode (along with a transcript, since we were recording a Welsh accent over the telephone.) Listen in full here. You can win a pair of tickets for Gruff Rhys at The Chapel by visiting our giveaway page. He's always a delight, but as you'll hear in the interview, this album in particular should make for an especially good show. Email giveaways@bff.fm with the subject “Gruff” to win! (More details here.) Enjoying the show? Please support BFF.FM with a donation.
