Musicians recount the strange and unexpected story behind the making of your favorite albums. Blur were London's answer to the Madchester movement up north but grew into Brit-Pop force to be reckoned with (or competed against) in the charts after Parklife became a hit. Welcome to The Chopping Block – where crypto insiders Haseeb Qureshi, Tom Schmidt, Tarun Chitra, and Robert Leshner chop it up about the latest in crypto. This week, we're joined by Farooq Malik, co-founder and CEO of Rain, as two parallel wars erupt across crypto: the Perp DEX war between Hyperliquid and the CZ-backed Aster, and the deepening battle for stablecoin dominance. As Aster rockets to $30B in daily volume, we debate whether it's real adoption or points-fueled froth — and what it means for Hyperliquid's lead. Then we dive into Tether's shocking $500B valuation play, Circle's shrinking moat, and how Rain is building real-world rails for stablecoin payments. If crypto has two new battlegrounds — trading venues and money itself — this is where the future is getting drawn. Show highlights

Jonathan and James ditch the usual lists and build a three-band alignment chart: which Beatles tracks feel most Beatles, Blur, or Talking Heads—and vice versa. Expect spicy picks (from “A Day in the Life” to “Once in a Lifetime”), friendly slander, and a tour of deep cuts like “Strange News from Another Star.” Video version on Patreon for the visuals.
In which The Curmudgeons lovingly recall the latter edge of the Britpop era, covering the years of 1996 and 1997. Britpop, at this point, had become a defining cultural phenomenon in the U.K., leaving music fans to wonder what might come next. Yet while Oasis attempted to follow the smashing, overwhelming success of its first two albums by going even bigger and grander, other bands veered toward something else entirely--maturity. Oasis's chief Britpop rival Blur changed things up by embracing American indie rock and electronica, and crafted its best album in the process. The Verve toned down their shoegazing psychedelia and turned solemn and gorgeously melodic. And Radiohead portended the future of rock with the first of its two inarguable masterpieces. We discuss these albums and also cover a whole bunch of great, sunny Britpop singles. Alles in Episode #110Suede.
What a tour!Welcome back to the Chris Moyles Show on Radio X Podcast. To celebrate ten years of Radio X, Chris and the team carried out their Massive Decade Tour. They hosted the show live from five locations around the country, with locations of special significance to them all. They started the week live in a barn on the legendary Blur bassist, Alex James's farm. Well when I say barn, let's be honest it's more like a cathedral! Alex gave them a tour of the place and chatted about the incredible musicians he's hosted on his farm and spoke on his life now as a full-time farmer. The team then dashed to Wrexham where they presented live from the Turf pub, literally touching distance from the Wrexham A.F.C. football stadium. After chatting with landlord Wayne and some locals who popped by, they made their next stop in Chris's hometown: Leeds, where more shenanigans went down. Next it was to Brown- I mean Whitehaven, where Chris unveiled a very special surprise for the locals, before making their final stop in Glasgow on Friday, where they did the show live from their hotel in front of an audience.Throughout all of this chaos, each day a lucky listener won £10,000 as a thank you for supporting Radio X over all these years. We also had special guests along the way, such as Humphrey Ker, Susie McCabe and the one and only McWobinson.Normality will resume next week as Chris et al. will be back in the studio (after some seriously well earned rest!)Keep an ear out for these best bits:Captain's loverFermenting your plumsRichard Ashcroft lookalike (...kind of)Enjoy! The Chris Moyles Show on Radio XWeekdays 6:30am - 10am

PHI Studio sponsored today's episode to highlight that they are expanding their location-based entertainment distribution network to the United States with their EXP Rosemont location in the greater Chicago, IL area that is opening to the public on September 26, 2025. They will be launching with a couple of Excurio pieces including The Horizon of Khufu and Life Chronicles that feature large-scale, free-roaming VR guided tours that I've covered previously in episodes #1430, #1431, and #1588. Both Excurio and PHI Studio are interested in collaborating with creators who are interested in creating large-scale LBE experiences that could draw 100-150 people per hour, and you can reach out to Fabian Barati and/or Julie Tremblay on LinkedIn. Excurio will be making their tools and SDK available to third party developers to expand the number content producers creating this type of large-scale work, and PHI Studio continues to do co-productions across a wide range of formats and throughput scales. I'm excited to see PHI Studio continue to build out their independent distribution network across Canada and North America as they continue to produce and distribute their own experiences as well as distribute the best of large-scale, free roaming experience from Excurio. EXP Rosemont will be launching with a couple of Excurio pieces, but I expect them to eventually distribute some of their own large-scale VR and non-VR, immersive works as well. PHI Studio continues to build out their own independent distribution networks, which will provide new outlets and opportunities for immersive stories that have featured on the festival circuit to have a home beyond this more insular XR industry exhibition network. Not all projects will be a good fit for this high-throughput format, but the revenue generated will help support their other more experimental efforts that are helping to push the boundaries of the medium. Look for my more in-depth coverage of Blur coming out here within the next couple of weeks, which was my personal favorite from Venice Immersive and one of the hottest tickets at this years festival. Thanks again to PHI Studio for sponsoring this episode, and keep an eye on this new location in the greater Chicago area (and apparently only a 10-minute ride from O'Hare Airport if you happen to have an extended layover). I'll be diving more into more 30+ hours of coverage from Venice Immersive within the next couple of weeks, likely after I return from Meta Connect. This is a listener-supported podcast through the Voices of VR Patreon. Music: Fatality
In which The Curmudgeons revisit the zenith of the Britpop movement. And by 1995, there definitely was a movement in the U.K. The music defined the style and defined the discussion and defined the culture. The mania was such that the two biggest bands in all of Britpop, Oasis and Blur, ended the year embroiled in a hilariously nasty feud. Here, we discuss albums by those two bands and others by The Verve, PJ Harvey, Elastica, Pulp and Radiohead. Oasis won't look back in anger, and neither will we. Oasis were the biggest band on the planet for a moment. They famously warred with Britpop rivals Blur, and the Brothers Gallagher feuded with each other in public and came to blows numerous times behind closed doors. The success of their massively popular second album skyrocketed the band to international fame and brought unwanted, intense pressure from the British tabloids, causing frontman Liam Gallagher to slide into a drunken stupor that would threaten to break up the band and distract Noel Gallagher from doing what he did best: write songs. All of the dysfunction, humor, hedonism and hooliganism that is Oasis comes to a head in this, the second part of the Oasis saga. This episode was originally published on April 13, 2021. One winter's night, Alex James received an unexpected call. Blur had been invited to play their biggest gig ever: Wembley Stadium. The only trouble was, he and his bandmates hadn't spoken to – or even shouted at – each other for years. And he now had five children, an out-of-control menagerie of cats, and a sprawling farm to run. This is the story of what happened next. Taking us behind the scenes of a raucous, rollercoaster year, Alex tells Times journalist and bestselling author Caitlin Moran how the band made a surprise – and emotional – return, recording an acclaimed album and playing sold-out shows around the world, from Colchester to Colombia and beyond. Plus: how he went on a crash diet to fit back into his ‘Britpop Trousers,' a chastening encounter with the President of Columbia, and the magical story behind She's So High. Britpop was more than just a musical genre—it was the soundtrack to an entire generation's coming of age. Our guest Mark Jennings opens up his musical time capsule to share twelve tracks that defined not just the movement, but pivotal moments in his own life. The mix takes us chronologically through Britpop's evolution—starting with Oasis's thunderous "Rock and Roll Star" and concluding with The Long Pigs' punchy "She Said." Along the way, Mark provides fascinating context about the famous Blur vs. Oasis rivalry that dominated British headlines but barely registered across the Atlantic. Before streaming services democratized music discovery, these cultural phenomena remained strangely localized, creating parallel music universes on either side of the pond.We discuss how The Stone Roses sparked the entire movement, why The Verve's "Bittersweet Symphony" video captivated MTV viewers, and how Radiohead's early work provides a gateway into their experimental evolution. For every legendary band like Blur or Oasis, Mark highlights underappreciated gems from bands like Supergrass, Ocean Color Scene, and Republica.Whether you lived through the 90s Britpop explosion or are discovering these sounds for the first time, this episode connects the musical dots between yesterday's cultural revolution and today's ongoing British music influence. Richie was joined by the legend that is Alex James. They chatted cheese and talked all about his Big Feastival music festival where he'll be playing bass in a Britpop Classical band. This week also marks 30 years since the Battle of Britpop, where Blur & Oasis battled it out to top the charts on August 14th 1995. It was a choice between Roll With It and Country House, and Blur were, of course, victorious. What does Alex remember from that golden era? Where was he when he found out Blur topped the charts over their Britpop rivals Oasis? And what does he make of the big Oasis reunion?
On August 14, 1995, both Oasis and Blur released singles, igniting a fierce competition for the top spot on the UK charts. We take a look at the circumstances that led to this watershed moment in pop music history. Steve and Stu have questions – so many questions. Fortunately they also have answers! In this episode:Stuart's Big Number is 217.5 million... and what does it have to do with a B-side by US indie rock icons Pavement?Steve wants to know which albums have the songs sequenced in the "wrong" order? (And which Blur album does he have a controversial tracklisting opinion about?)Spotify's prices go up (again) – and who is happy about it and why?How easy is it to get a #1 album now – and did indie band The K's do it by selling CDs?Live-show promoters Live Nation have made "stonking" profits – and have sold 130m tickets. And it's because stadium shows are incredibly popular at the moment – but why?Napster are being sued by Sony Music... so have Stuart and Steve accidentally travelled back to the year 2000, or is something else happening?Donating a kidney for a sold-out festival ticket;Stuart waits up all night for the Taylor Swift album announcement – or is it a pre-pre-pre-announcement announcement? And in the special post-show lock-in section just for our Patreon Superfans, Steve and Stuart chat about:The time when the man in front of Steve in the guestlist queue claimed that he was Steve Lamacq;(And the time when Steve claimed he was someone else to get into a Bob Mould gig);Steve's top tip for legitimately getting into a sold-out gig;The time Stuart accidentally ended up at a minor reality TV star's birthday party;Stuart CONFESSES ALL about his ILLEGAL Napster use in 1999 (and how he downloaded the pop songs he felt too ashamed to buy in the shops); How Stuart was once gifted - and then lost - a $2000 bottle of tequila. As ever, we welcome your feedback, emails and – in particular – any questions you might have about how the music biz works!Email us: thepriceofmusicpodcast@gmail.comSee you next week!Steve and Stuart======Support The Price of Music on Patreon:https://www.patreon.com/ThePriceofMusicFollow Steve on X - @steve_lamacqFollow Stuart on X - @stuartdredgeFollow The Price of Music on X - @PriceofMusicpodFor sponsorship, email - joe@musically.com
In which The Curmudgeons hop into the phone booth and travel back to the time when Britpop ruled the world during the heart of the 1990s. What was Britpop? Most specifically, it was a call to rock 'n' roll arms by a swath of young, hungry bands peeved at America's cultural imperialism of the era. The music swayed and blasted with confidence, and its pop structures were tight, tuneful--and, as a result, titanic. We start this series of episodes in the early 1990s, in 1992 and 1993. We cover Britpop artists such as Blur, Suede, Pulp, Elastica and The Verve on this episode. Yet we also cover what we call "Britpop adjacent" acts like PJ Harvey, Radiohead and The Cranberries, whose own Britishness seeped its way into groundbreaking music they were making in their own right. Enjoy the Britpop and Britpop adjacency from this episode by accessing our special Spotify playlist: https://open.spotify.com/playlist/08abNW4XljAQS4ZvJ77Cpp?si=f199dce9a4cc4ab7 Here's a handy navigation companion to this episode. In this episode of Badlands Daily, CannCon and Ghost expose the regime's tightening grip on the narrative as media coverage, legal maneuvers, and digital censorship ramp up ahead of the 2024 election cycle. They break down CBS's suspicious pivot away from Biden's corruption, explore the implications of Biden's “blurred” public appearances, and analyze how AI-generated speech is being folded into deepfake legislation. The episode also covers revelations from whistleblowers about social media platforms deliberately throttling truth-tellers, the subtle manipulation of language in news reports, and Elon Musk's role in the larger media chessboard. From buried Durham findings to escalating lawfare against Trump, this episode shows how coordinated the information war has become, and why discernment is more important than ever.
