Viele populäre Filme der 1980er Jahre altern nicht sehr gut – das gilt auch für POLICE STORY. Charakterentwicklung? Dialogregie? Darauf wurde ganz offenbar kein Wert gelegt. Es geht um die wirklich herausragenden Stunts, die atemberaubenden und sehr einfallsreichen Actionszenen mit einer gehörigen Portion Slapstick. Und da hat Jackie Chans Film vor vier Jahrzehnten höchste Standards gesetzt: Gerade die erste große Actionsequenz mit Autos, die durch eine Siedlung am Hang donnern oder die Kampfszenen im Kaufhaus hauen einen auch heute noch um.Wir durften den Film in restaurierter Fassung auf der großen Leinwand sehen (was toll war), aber leider in der deutschen Synchronfassung (was nicht toll war). Viele Szenen sind dabei so albern, dass man sie auch direkt mit der Musik von Benny Hill hätte unterlegen können. Dass der Film dann noch versucht ernst, sogar melodramatisch zu werden, und daran komplett scheitert, lässt uns als Zuschauer ratlos zurück. Starring real-life Olympic gymnast Kurt Thomas in his feature film debut (and finale), this Cold War curiosity follows a gymnast-martial artist sent on a CIA mission to win "the game" in the fictional country of Parmistan. The prize? The perfect location for a Star Wars satellite defense system. The obstacles? Rope courses, arrow-wielding guards, and an entire village populated by actual asylum patients armed with pitchforks.The hosts dive into the film's bizarre logic, from the conveniently placed pommel horse in a village alley to the princess who somehow knows martial arts despite never mentioning it. They discuss the film's missed opportunities—why didn't they establish the international competitors better? Why does no one ever say "Gymkata" in the actual movie? As a rule I generally don’t go to class reunions. They’re just too weird for me, and I’m not great at the “what are you doing these days” types of conversations. But a few weeks ago was my 40th year college reunion, and a handful of great old friends convinced me to attend some of the festivities. Truthfully, I have to thank those old pals, as I ended up having a great time. Sure, my old man memory caused me to not remember some of these folks but I did my best. It also caused me to reminsce on the music of that era. I was the music director of KAUR my senior year, and it was such a great period in my life. Some of my favorite bands were putting out their greatest music, and almost every week there seemed to be potnetial new faves. These movies didn't just entertain, they helped define Generation X adolescence. Why did these films resonate so much? Because the '80s were overflowing with disposable teen cash, hungry studios, and an army of rising stars like Michael J. Fox, Molly Ringwald, Anthony Michael Hall, John Cusack, and more.
