Most game studios think they have a talent problem. They don't. They have a structure problem.Chris Casanova spent 15+ years as a producer across Microsoft Xbox, Mojang (Minecraft), Relic Entertainment, Offworld Industries, and Hypixel Studios. He's watched talented teams fail repeatedly—not from lack of skill, but from organizational friction.Traditional studios organize around craft silos: design departments, engineering departments, art departments. Every feature requires handoffs. Every handoff loses fidelity. The result? Friction, misalignment, wasted iteration, and missed deadlines.Chris reveals the alternative: cross-functional outcome teams of 5-9 people who own their results from concept to ship.━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━TIMESTAMPS━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━00:00 - Chris's background: Xbox, Mojang, Relic02:59 - Why he wrote "Structure Teams to Win"06:54 - The problem with craft-based teams08:17 - Outcome teams: The procedural worlds example18:32 - Why 5-9 people is optimal team size24:10 - Three organizational layers explained31:48 - When leaders resist change42:20 - The political reality of reorganization47:15 - Case study: 70-person AA co-op shooter58:07 - Advice for small teams (10 people)01:01:06 - How to connect with Chris━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━KEY INSIGHTS━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━THE PROBLEMS:- Design creates specs without context → over-engineered solutions- Art produces assets without validation → endless iteration- QA receives unclear requirements → irrelevant bug reports- Every handoff loses the original intentTHE SOLUTION:Cross-functional teams of 5-9 people with:→ Mixed disciplines (designers, engineers, artists, QA embedded)→ Clear mission and measurable KPIs→ Everything needed to own their outcome→ Minimal handoffs, maximum collaborationREAL EXAMPLE:Procedural worlds team mission: "Every world seed feels fresh, readable, performant"KPI: Biome novelty per minuteTeam: Generation engineers, world designers, environment artists, technical artists, QA━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━70-PERSON STUDIO STRUCTURE━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━Chris provides detailed org structure for AA co-op shooter:- Combat & Gameplay (15 people, 2 teams)- Progression & Economy (10 people, 2 teams)- Social & Co-Op (12 people, 2 teams)- Content & Live Ops (15 people, 2 teams)- World & Narrative (10 people, 1 team)- Technical Foundation (8 people, 1 team)Each team has 5-9 people with mixed disciplines focused on specific outcomes.━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━THE HARD TRUTHS━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━Some leaders won't make the transition from managing 30 people to being on a team of 8.

The Palazzo Ducale dominates the view as your vaporetto approaches the San Marco stop. The huge building is an example of Venetian Gothic architecture, all pointed arches and quatrefoils. It's hard to believe that two prisons lie within its bulk, with a third inside the pristine white building alongside it. Tourists might be the only people who visit these prisons now, trotting along the corridors as part of organised tours. Yet in bygone centuries, notorious reputations clung to the cells, and people feared being slung into them. The fearsome reputation of this prison may not have outlived the building, but they certainly outlived the Venetian Republic. Let's explore this reputation, some legends associated with the Palace and its prisons, and even learn of a daring escape from one of them - by none other than Casanova - in this week's episode!

If your days feel like a relentless sprint—from school drop-offs to late-night routines—you're not alone. In this short and powerful solo episode, I open up about the challenges of maintaining intimacy, presence, and intention in marriage when life gets overwhelmingly busy. With fall sports, kid activities, and work responsibilities piling up, it's all too easy to slip into “roommate mode” with your spouse. But here's the truth: Strong families start with strong marriages. I share three deeply practical ways to create micro-moments of connection, build intentional rituals, and avoid emotional drift. Whether it's through a 30-minute walk, a forehead kiss, or a late-night two-minute check-in, this episode is your reminder that you're not just co-parents—you're still each other's chosen partner. Episode Highlights [0:00] - Introduction [1:05] - Why strong marriages are the foundation of strong families [2:55] - The common trap of prioritizing everything but your marriage [4:46] - The September-October “whiplash” that hits most parents hard [5:43] - Celebrating the release of The Pursuit of Legendary Fatherhood [8:19] - How an unbalanced focus on your kids can erode your marriage [10:09] - The power of micro-moments: texts, sticky notes, forehead kisses [12:31] - Creative date ideas (even when time is scarce) [14:29] - Why sometimes the world has to suffer—but your marriage shouldn't [15:14] - End-of-day rituals that spark closeness even in exhaustion [17:41] - The compound interest effect of tiny deposits in your marriage [18:03] - You are more than a co-parent—you're still her Casanova [19:13] - A free 21-day email series to help you build an extraordinary marriage [20:54] - Final rally cry: be uncommon, be legendary 5 Key Takeaways 1. Strong Marriages Build Strong Families When your marriage is thriving, it naturally strengthens the emotional climate of your entire home. Don't neglect the foundation. 2. Micro-Moments Matter More Than Grand Gestures A quick kiss, a thoughtful note, or a midday “thinking of you” text can do more for connection than elaborate plans you never get to. 3. Busy Seasons Are Inevitable—Disconnection Isn't Just because life is chaotic doesn't mean your relationship has to suffer. Intention and awareness are your defense against emotional drift. 4. You're Still Her Lover, Not Just Her Co-Parent The role of “dad” is important—but don't forget you were her partner first. That romance needs nurturing, especially when time is tight. 5. Investing in Your Marriage Pays Long-Term Dividends Like compound interest, the small daily investments you make in your marriage build a future of closeness, trust, and enduring partnership.
EPISODE 147 | Man Out of Time: The Comte St. Germain He composed and played music, spoke several languages, was versed in alchemy and the early sciences, and hung around with the likes of Mozart and Casanova, yet no one even knew his real name. Voltaire called him the “Wonderman”, though that may have been sarcasm, but most came to know him as the Comte, or Count, St. Germain. One of his many wild boasts and claims was that he was more than 500 years old. Perhaps even older than that. Just who was this mysterious figure who showed up in 18th century salons?

In Episode #245 of the XS Noize Podcast, host Mark Millar is joined by Neil Hannon — the brilliant mind behind The Divine Comedy — for a revealing conversation about his stunning new album, Rainy Sunday Afternoon, out this September on Divine Comedy Records. His 13th studio album and perhaps his finest to date, Rainy Sunday Afternoon, was recorded at Abbey Road and finds Hannon blending lush orchestral arrangements with sharp lyrical insight. Written as a response to personal reflection and global unrest, the record explores themes of memory, mortality, and melancholy — all delivered with his trademark wit and elegance. The Divine Comedy's 13th album, balancing grief and absurdity, and why songwriting still feels like emotional alchemy. The album's lead single Achilles, inspired by a 1915 WWI poem, is a moving meditation on bravery and loss. Elsewhere, Hannon reflects on writing songs for the hit film Wonka and revisiting his past through the remastered Divine Comedy back catalogue. In this episode, Neil discusses the emotional and philosophical ideas behind the new record, the creative freedom of writing for film, and why music — now more than ever — needs both sadness and silliness. He also teases the upcoming UK tour and shares reflections on a career spent crafting one of Britain's most unique and literate songbooks. Whether you've followed The Divine Comedy since Casanova, or are discovering Neil's genius for the first time, this is a rich, witty, and deeply human episode not to be missed. There are a lot of reasons why someone might decide to quit music at some point along the way. But could performance anxiety be one of them?Indeed, performance anxiety can feel pretty uncomfortable! And it's one thing if we still sound pretty good on stage regardless, and have a positive experience of performing overall. But when we get nervous and sound like just a shell of ourselves in performance, it could make us wonder why we keep putting ourselves up there...So I was intrigued by a 2025 study which looked to see if deliberate practice might play a role in this equation between performance anxiety and performance success and thoughts about quitting.
