Crazy story. Walter Georis wrote the soundtrack to the iconic surf film, The Endless Summer. With desires to make it big in music, the soundtrack would be their swan song in show business. What happens after, is shear career poetry. I have to tell you that sitting down with Walter Georis was the kind of podcast taping that makes me glad I do this show. There's something about a man whose life story connects surf music, fine dining, art, and wine that just puts a smile on your face—especially when he unspools it with such humble, matter-of-fact wisdom. Now, I didn't know much about Walter Georis before a friend tipped me off. I got an email out of the blue—one of those you almost skip past in your inbox. My friend, who I used to surf with in Palos Verdes, had been up late thinking about "The Endless Summer." He does a quick search, and boom—finds out that the guy who wrote the music for that iconic film now owns a winery up in Carmel Valley. He tells me, "Paul, you've got to talk to this guy!" And, boy, am I glad I did. From the start, Walter Georis came off with a grounded, European sensibility—someone raised on the value of seasons, making things from scratch, and, most importantly, letting nature express itself. I loved his opening line: "I don't do anything to the wine to manipulate it…" For him, a vintage is a vintage, and that's the story in the bottle. As someone who's spent a lifetime talking with both big-shot and backyard winemakers, this kind of honesty always jumps out at me. What floored me about Walter Georis was the stories. Here's a Belgian kid, can hardly swim, never surfed, but ends up shaping the sound of California's surf music scene in the sixties! He and his buddies, playing in garages and school gyms, end up composing for "The Endless Summer"—and not by luck, but because they show up, put in the hours, and play for the right parties (and some of the right glassers, too—if you know, you know). And, this is the kicker—he does all this as a French speaker, blending right in with the "stoked, it's a trip" Southern California crowd. But Walter Georis's life isn't about hanging onto some faded record label glory. He's got this restless, creative spirit. After the music, he turns to art, painting eight hours a day in Carmel, living on the cheap. He spends years finding his style, blending the abstract with the figurative—until, naturally, he finds himself in the hospitality business, opening Casanova and La Boheme Song with his family. This is what I love: the European model, building legacy, not just chasing a fast-growing, flash-in-the-pan restaurant business. And Walter Georis gets it right—places that become international, drawing in everyone from actors to race car drivers, all wanting a piece of that Carmel magic. But for me, this episode really shines when we dig into the winemaking. Walter Georis talks about honest wine—the idea that you don't mess with what the vineyard gives you. He gets animated describing the soil, the minerality, the farming, the blending. He talks of Merlot and Cabernet, about planting olive trees, raising sheep (well, until the insurance company got involved)—all these things that anchor you to the land and seasons. He reminds me that great wine isn't about ego or a label; it's about caretaking, patience, storytelling. The conversation wraps with stories of his mother giving birth during the Battle of the Bulge in a wine cellar. There's a sense that all these threads—history, survival, family, creativity—flow right into the glass he pours. A life, a terroir, an honest wine. And that, my friends, is why I do Wine Talks. #WineTalks #WalterGeoris #PaulKalemkiarian #CarmelValley #EndlessSummer #SurfCulture #Winemaker #CaliforniaWine #MusicHistory #RestaurantLife #HonestWine #ArtAndWine #WinePodcast #BordeauxVarietals #CasanovaRestaurant #WineStories #VineyardLife #Terroir #FarmToTable #AmericanWine

In 1745, London authorities arrested a stranger who refused to give his name. His pockets were full of diamonds, and he played violin like a master. For the next two hundred years, this man appeared at every turning point in European history. He transformed lead into gold for Casanova, repaired the King's diamond to perfection, and described ancient Rome as if he'd lived there. He spoke twenty languages without accent and claimed to have witnessed the crucifixion. He warned Marie Antoinette before the guillotine and predicted both World Wars with eerie accuracy. The Count of Saint Germain died in 1784. But people kept seeing him—in Paris, New Orleans, and on Mount Shasta—always the same age, always one step ahead of history.

Michaelangelo Casanova Joins The Rational Egoist for a Powerful Conversation on EntrepreneurshipOn this episode, Michael Liebowitz is joined by Michaelangelo Casanova for a rich, energising discussion about what it truly means to build a life—and a business—through deliberate action and uncompromising personal agency.Michaelangelo Casanova is an entrepreneur and life coach who has dedicated his work to helping people break out of passive living and step into purposeful creation. His approach is direct, grounded, and results-focused: the mindset of someone who believes that a fulfilled life is chosen, built, and earned through clarity and disciplined effort.Together, Michael and Michaelangelo explore the psychology behind entrepreneurship:why ambition requires independence, why stagnation often begins in the mind long before it shows up in results, and how a person creates momentum when the world around them rewards excuses over effort. It's an honest conversation about responsibility, creativity, and the quiet pride that comes from building something real.About Michael Liebowitz – Host of The Rational EgoistMichael Liebowitz is the host of The Rational Egoist, a philosopher, author, and political activist committed to the principles of reason, individualism, and rational self-interest. Olivia Laing is an internationally acclaimed writer and critic. They are the author of eight books, including The Lonely City, Everybody and the Sunday Times bestseller The Garden Against Time. Laing's first novel, Crudo, won the James Tait Black Memorial Prize and in 2018 they were awarded the Windham-Campbell Prize for non-fiction. In today's episode, Laing sits down with host Mythili Rao to discuss their latest novel, The Silver Book. The Silver Book is at once a queer love story and a noirish thriller, set in the dream factory of cinema. Weaving a fictional account from the creation of Federico Fellini's flamboyant biopic Casanova and Pasolini's notoriously shocking, Salò, or 120 Days of Sodom, Laing explores the difficult relationship between artifice and truth, illusion and reality, love and power. The Dad Edge Podcast (formerly The Good Dad Project Podcast)
If your days feel like a relentless sprint—from school drop-offs to late-night routines—you're not alone. In this short and powerful solo episode, I open up about the challenges of maintaining intimacy, presence, and intention in marriage when life gets overwhelmingly busy. With fall sports, kid activities, and work responsibilities piling up, it's all too easy to slip into “roommate mode” with your spouse. But here's the truth: Strong families start with strong marriages. I share three deeply practical ways to create micro-moments of connection, build intentional rituals, and avoid emotional drift. Whether it's through a 30-minute walk, a forehead kiss, or a late-night two-minute check-in, this episode is your reminder that you're not just co-parents—you're still each other's chosen partner. Episode Highlights [0:00] - Introduction [1:05] - Why strong marriages are the foundation of strong families [2:55] - The common trap of prioritizing everything but your marriage [4:46] - The September-October “whiplash” that hits most parents hard [5:43] - Celebrating the release of The Pursuit of Legendary Fatherhood [8:19] - How an unbalanced focus on your kids can erode your marriage [10:09] - The power of micro-moments: texts, sticky notes, forehead kisses [12:31] - Creative date ideas (even when time is scarce) [14:29] - Why sometimes the world has to suffer—but your marriage shouldn't [15:14] - End-of-day rituals that spark closeness even in exhaustion [17:41] - The compound interest effect of tiny deposits in your marriage [18:03] - You are more than a co-parent—you're still her Casanova [19:13] - A free 21-day email series to help you build an extraordinary marriage [20:54] - Final rally cry: be uncommon, be legendary 5 Key Takeaways 1. Strong Marriages Build Strong Families When your marriage is thriving, it naturally strengthens the emotional climate of your entire home. Don't neglect the foundation. 2. Micro-Moments Matter More Than Grand Gestures A quick kiss, a thoughtful note, or a midday “thinking of you” text can do more for connection than elaborate plans you never get to. 3. Busy Seasons Are Inevitable—Disconnection Isn't Just because life is chaotic doesn't mean your relationship has to suffer. Intention and awareness are your defense against emotional drift. 4. You're Still Her Lover, Not Just Her Co-Parent The role of “dad” is important—but don't forget you were her partner first. That romance needs nurturing, especially when time is tight. 5. Investing in Your Marriage Pays Long-Term Dividends Like compound interest, the small daily investments you make in your marriage build a future of closeness, trust, and enduring partnership.
