Welcome to Reel Britannia-a very British podcast about very British movies ...with just a hint of professionalism. And a huge welcome back to Hal, contributer of wonderful reviews at the official Talking Pictures Podcast as well as host of his very own show Couple Indemnity. Hold onto your snorkels! In Thunderball, suave spy James Bond jets off to the sun-drenched Bahamas. Why the holiday? Because the villainous, eye-patch-wearing Largo of SPECTRE has pinched two atomic bombs and is holding the world to ransom! 007 must navigate treacherous waters, both literally and figuratively, charming allies like the stunning Domino while dodging Largo's aquatic thugs. Get ready for thrilling underwater battles, cool gadgets, and Bond proving that even a nuclear crisis can't cramp his impeccable style. It's a high-stakes game of global poker, and Bond's all-in! Thunderball(1965) In 1965's Thunderball, James Bond, played with maximum cool by Sean Connery, finds himself in a pickle when the notoriously nasty organization SPECTRE, specifically their number two main man, the delightfully devious and eye-patch-sporting Emilio Largo, makes off with two atomic bombs. Their asking price for not reducing a major city to a fine powder? A cool £100 million in diamonds.  Naturally, Her Majesty's Secret Service dispatches their best man, 007, who, after a rather explosive pre-title sequence involving a man in drag and a handy jetpack, tracks the villainy to the vibrant, sun-drenched Bahamas. Bond's mission quickly turns into a tropical tango of espionage. He crosses paths with the alluring Domino, who just happens to be Largo's mistress, and the fiery SPECTRE operative Fiona Volpe, who prefers lethal motorcycles to leisurely strolls. Armed with Q's latest toys – including gadgets perfect for underwater shenanigans – Bond dives headfirst into Largo's world, which is, conveniently, based around a superyacht and a rather shark-infested estate. The film culminates in an absolutely bonkers underwater battle royale, proving that fisticuffs are just as effective below the waves as they are on dry land. With the fate of a major city hanging in the balance, Bond and his newfound allies engage in a fin-tastic clash against Largo's scuba-equipped forces. Will Bond recover the bombs, get the girl, and deliver a perfect one-liner before the credits roll? You know the answer, but the fun is in watching him do it with effortless charm and a never-ending supply of air tanks!  "My dear girl, don't flatter yourself. What I did this evening was for King and country. You don't think it gave me any pleasure, do you?"   This and previous episodes can be found everywhere you download your podcasts Follow us on Twitter @rbritanniapod  Follow Couple Indemnity @coupleindemnity   Thanks for listening   Scott and Steven

Black Sunday (1960), Blood and Black Lace (1964), and A Bay of Blood (1971) There are films by certain directors that are truly iconic—classics of the genre we sometimes assume everyone has already seen. But it's easy to forget that, right now, there are fans just beginning their journey into horror. Whether due to age or a newfound curiosity, they're taking their first steps into the genre. For those unfamiliar with him, we'd like to introduce one of horror's true maestros: Mario Bava. And for those already acquainted with his work, maybe it's time for a revisit—to once again be stunned by what he brings to the screen. If it's been a few years, you may find yourself seeing things in a whole new way. That's one of the beautiful things about cinema. The three films we've chosen highlight important parts of Bava's career and show how his work helped shape entire subgenres—from gothic horror to giallo to the slasher film. Whether you're discovering him for the first time or coming back for a fresh look, these films are a perfect place to begin. One quick correction: Edgar Wallace was a British writer, not American. Films mentioned in this episode: Baron Blood (1972), A Bay of Blood (1971), Black Sabbath (1963), Black Sunday (1960), Blood and Black Lace (1964), Caltiki the Immortal Monster (1959), The Church (1989), Creature with the Blue Hand (1967), Curse of the Crying Woman (1963), Curse of Frankenstein (1957), Danger: Diabolik (1968), The Day the Sky Exploded (1958), Death Walks at Midnight (1972), Death Walks in High Heels (1971), Deep Red (1975), The Demon (1982), Demons (1985), Django Kill…If You Live, Shoot! Welcome back to the Drinks and a Movie Podcast! In this seventh episode of my James Bond series, I'm diving into Diamonds Are Forever (1971), which marks Sean Connery's return as Bond after a break from the role. This film, while classic in its own right, is also notable for its place in the Bond franchise's continuity—or lack thereof. Diamonds Are Forever, along with On Her Majesty's Secret Service and You Only Live Twice, deviates from the correct order of Ian Fleming's novels. The correct sequence is Thunderball, followed by On Her Majesty's Secret Service, and then You Only Live Twice. This shift is significant because it disrupts the emotional and narrative through-line, especially when it comes to Bond's relationship with Tracy and the aftermath of her death, which was central to On Her Majesty's Secret Service. By skipping over the emotional weight that should have followed, Diamonds Are Forever somewhat lightens the thematic stakes of Bond's character arc, leaning into a more campy, adventurous tone instead of the emotional depth seen in Fleming's books. To pair with this film, I'm sipping on Elmer T. Lee Single Barrel Sour Mash Bourbon, crafted from Buffalo Trace's Mash Bill #2. Elmer T. Lee, a legendary figure in the bourbon world. He was became a master distiller at Buffalo Trace and was instrumental in the creation of Blanton's Bourbon. His single barrel sour mash bourbon is known for its smooth, rich profile, making it the perfect companion for a Bond film that balances high stakes with a lighter, more fun tone. Join me as I discuss how Diamonds Are Forever shifts the tone of the Bond saga, why the change in the novel order matters thematically, and why Elmer T. Lee's bourbon is an ideal drink to accompany this spirited, yet somewhat disjointed, chapter in Bond's story.

What if I told you that the man who flew above Disneyland's Tomorrowland in the 1960s wasn't on wires, but strapped to actual jet engines? The remarkable true story of the rocket belt at Disney parks is more fascinating—and bizarre—than you might imagine.Kelly and Pete explore the surprising origins of personal flight technology, beginning with Wendell Moore of Bell Aeronautics, who adapted stabilization jets from Chuck Yeager's sound barrier-breaking X-1 aircraft into a wearable rocket pack. Though limited to just 21 seconds of flight time and powered by 90% pure hydrogen peroxide, these devices captured worldwide imagination, appearing not just at Disneyland and Disney World, but at presidential demonstrations, the 1984 Olympics opening ceremony, and in James Bond's "Thunderball."The rocket belt's journey through entertainment history connects fascinating dots between science fiction and reality. From Buck Rogers' "jumping belt" of 1920s comics to Commando Cody's rocket adventures in 1950s film serials, America had been primed to embrace personal flight long before it became technically possible. When Disney showcased these devices above Tomorrowland, they were fulfilling dreams decades in the making. But this is just the beginning of a story that grows increasingly strange. As competing rocket belt designs emerge, the narrative takes unexpected turns involving lawn-mowing teenagers who became rocket men, alleged drug smuggling operations, baseball bat confrontations, stolen equipment, and the birth of troubling rivalries that will ultimately lead to truly startling consequences. This first installment of a two-part rocket belt saga lifts off from the Flight Circle of yesterday's Tomorrowland and soars through a landscape where Disney history intersects with one of technology's most persistently appealing—yet perpetually impractical—dreams. Join us next time as the story grows even more unbelievable.==================================================================Show Notes: Bill Suitor is his name, not Robert as Kelly says early on.Dr. Theopolis on Buck Rogers was voiced by Howard F. Flynn. It's actually unclear if Tommy Walker booked the Bell Rocketbelt team for the 1964 World's Fair. He did, however, book Suitor to fly the RocketBelt for the 1984 Olympic Games opening as well as the team's 1965 and 1967 appearances at Disneyland.Walker, by the way, also composed the six-note "Charge!" fanfare heard at American sporting events.Astronaut Charles Duke: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Charles_DukeKelly is playing fast and loose with the attraction naming. Rocket to the Moon (1955), Flight to the Moon (1967), Mission to Mars (1975).The Jetbelt guys actually could have launched from the location of the former Flying Saucers ride in 1967 because it had been converted to the Tomorrowland stage.Technical Debt at Disneyland article - https://boardwalktimes.net/the-cost-of-endless-magic-theme-parks-and-technical-debt-73a4bb29bb24Jaxxon!  https://starwars.fandom.com/wiki/Jaxxon_T._TumperakkiThanks for listening! We'd love it if you would give us a cheeky little review on your podcast platform of choice. “I thought I saw a specter at your shoulder.”Ian Seabrook, acclaimed underwater cinematographer behind upcoming Last Breath and next year's live-action Moana, joins us to dive deep into the 1965 James Bond classic Thunderball. With decades of experience filming beneath the waves, including recent work on Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny, Old, and Jungle Cruise, Seabrook shares fascinating insights about his journey from amateur underwater photographer to Hollywood cinematographer, and why Thunderball remains such an influential film in his career. From the groundbreaking 10-minute underwater battle sequence to the technological innovations that made filming underwater possible in the 1960s, we explore how Thunderball pushed the boundaries of what could be achieved on camera beneath the waves. Seabrook offers unique perspective on how underwater filming has evolved from the days of pure practical effects to modern CGI, while discussing his work on recent films like Last Breath and the vital importance of creating safe, comfortable environments for actors working underwater. The conversation spans everything from early influences like National Geographic magazines to legendary underwater filmmaker Ricou Browning (who directed Thunderball's underwater sequences and famously played the Creature in Creature from the Black Lagoon) to the challenges of directing actors underwater and building trust with performers who may be facing their fears in an unfamiliar environment.Whether you're a James Bond fan or simply interested in the craft of filmmaking, this discussion illuminates why Thunderball remains a landmark achievement in underwater cinematography. Ian's passion for his craft and deep knowledge of both the technical and artistic aspects of underwater filming made for an engaging conversation about this classic film that helped establish underwater action sequences in modern cinema.LinksFind Ian on his website, on IMDb, or on InstagramWatch this on Apple or Amazon, or find other places at JustWatchScript OptionsTheatrical trailerOriginal Material and on AudibleLetterboxd Learn how to support our show and The Next Reel's family of film podcasts by becoming a member. The episode's title is a quote from Quantum of Solace, specifically the scene where Mathis attempts to get to the bottom of Bond's sleep problems. In the Bond films we don't see our hero getting healthy, natural sleep all that often. Perhaps because, as Hitchcock famously asserted, ‘drama is life with the dull bits cut out', we're supposed to assume Bond sleeps like a normal human being when we're not looking. On the occasions where we do see Bond waking up, it's usually because he's been drugged or knocked unconscious. But this is a different story in the books. David has gone back through Fleming's 14 Bond books and found there are more than 400 direct references to sleep - that's more than 30 per book! Might this suggest that Fleming himself had an interesting relationship with sleep that he transposed into his character? There are definite patterns across the books, which David guides us through here, highlighting particularly intriguing examples from Casino Royale, Live and Let Die, Moonraker, From Russia, With Love and Thunderball. Is there anything from the Bond films and the Fleming books we can use to help us address our own sleep problems? Both Alex and David have wrestled with sleep issues their entire lives, including experiencing prolonged periods of insomnia. But there are differences… Alex is a night owl, an evening person, someone who has no issue being wide awake really late at night. David is the opposite, a lark, who is mentally and physically most alert early in the morning. Although neither Alex nor David are sleep scientists (and sleep science as an academic discipline is still very new!), both have put in a lot of effort to resolving their sleep issues, including reading some of the same books - sometimes with different results! Here, both talk through the approaches they've tried and tested over the years and reveal how they have reframed their relationships with sleep. Sleep hygiene is key for both of them. How does alcohol, caffeine and what we do in the hour before bed make a difference? Alex and David also tackle: Why is it important to know your chronotype (night owl/morning lark, etc)? How does insomnia relate to anxiety? What happens if we never sleep? (Like Gustav Graves in Die Another Day) Should we be concerned if we don't dream? If we experience night terrors (like Bond does in the books) how can we deal with these? What are the ups and downs of sleeping pills? (There are a lot of them in Fleming!) How do sleep rhythms differ internationally? Why is jet lag so evil? What's the sun got to do with sleep? Why is it sometimes more difficult to sleep in hotels than home? How does Fleming's Bond always wake up on time without an alarm clock? And what is his standard wake up time? What chronotype does that make him?

Sean Connery had vowed he was never going to return as James Bond after 1971's Diamonds Are Forever. Meanwhile, a man called Kevin McClory had agreed not to exercise his screen rights to the story of Thunderball until 1975. Yet the highest profile 'unofficial' Bond project would bring them both together, as Never Say Never Again did battle with the official 007 film Octopussy at the 1983 box office. A different battle played out in 1999, as Robert De Niro took the plunge into comedy with Analyze This. It'd be an early hit in a year that was awash with them - yet the idea of a mob boss seeing a shrink, that seemed original when the film was conceived - was about to slam head-first into a brand new TV show...
