38: How umru laid the building blocks of hyperpop

No Tags

Play Episode Listen Later Feb 6, 2025 102:17

A jam-packed episode of No Tags this week, but we had a lot to catch up on. Central Cee's debut album Can't Rush Greatness is out (02:56) and it's UK drill's biggest album to date, almost by default. Eusexua (10:07) might be the record that finally sells us on FKA twigs? And we talk about the grey zones of desire in Babygirl over in film corner (18:32).But then onto the main event: we're joined this week by NYC DJ and virtual pop architect umru (30:09). A key member of SoundCloud's class of the mid-2010s, umru officially graduated to the hyperpop top tier in 2017 with his work on Charli XCX's game-changing Pop 2 mixtape. He's since worked with the likes of Hannah Diamond, Tommy Cash, Hyd, Dorian Electra and more while releasing his own music on PC Music and, this year, LuckyMe. He's also one of our favourite DJs, with an anything-goes approach that feels firmly in the legacy of faves like Total Freedom, Evian Christ and Ryan Hemsworth. We also talked about his past life running parties on Minecraft, leak culture, pop's Splice era, and the link between PC Music and Pirates of the Caribbean.A little housekeeping: after a small delay the second pressing of No Tags: Conversations on underground music culture should be arriving in the next week, so if you missed out the first time, head to Shopify to place your order. In the meantime, if you're enjoying No Tags, please do rate, review and subscribe on your podcast app of choice. We'd also ask you to consider subscribing to our paid tier, which costs £5 a month and helps us continue planning, recording, editing and transcribing podcasts like this one. He is a partner and artist at Indo Warehouse, a multi-faceted label/platform that is dedicated to authentically integrating South Asian culture with electronic music. He is also the founder Mix4Change, the first global DJ-driven community working to promote change, and is a veteran  DJ and event producer, working with emerging and established brands in both nightlife and experiential capacities all over the world with a large footprint in the city he calls home now, New York.We talk about how growing up Indian in Texas means always having that supportive brown family,  what our shared experience working together in India was really like, his biggest takeaways working at Meta for 8 years, and why he holds Mix4Change so close to his heart.I ask him about his third South Asian inspired brand, Indo Warehouse, how the label/platform/event space combines all of his passions, how the brand aims to expand its footprint even more globally in 2023, their insanely popular (and always sold out) events, and of course his first single, Anokha, which we had the honor to play for this episode.Check out the site for more info about Indo Warehouse, how you can support, and tickets to the upcoming Festival of Love!https://indowarehouse.co/

Michael Anthony on the Virtual Sessions presented by The DJ Sessions 9/12/22 About Michael Anthony - I've signed several releases to Sirup & PinkStar Black (EDX's labels) and have received support from him in his NoXcuses Radio show. NYC-based DJ Michael Anthony has been playing at the most popular venues in New York and around the world for over a decade. Whether he's performing on the beaches of Cabo San Lucas, or in a nightclub in Montreal, Michael finds himself most at ease playing music for the crowd.  The Past: Early on in his career, Michael knew that in order to stand out as a DJ, he had to create his own tracks/remixes. After networking a bit in the NYC DJ scene, he began learning directly from the NYC trance duo legends Filo & Peri and quickly became committed to mastering the craft of music production. The Present: Michael has released tracks on all worldwide marketplaces with many major artists. He was personally asked by the house music legend Stonebridge to remix his classic, “Sometimes” and a new release, “So Good”. Both releases charted internationally and gained the respect of the dance community. In 2021, Michael's collaboration, “For You” was released on Will Sparks' record label TeamWrk Records. His next release “Say Yes” was released on top Amsterdam record label Groove Bassment and quickly amassed over 100k streams on Spotify alone.  Charting regularly on 1001Tracklists and making it to the top 100 Future House Beatport Chart are just a few of Michael's 2021 accomplishments. His tracks have been in rotation on Sirius XM BPM and supported by major top 100 DJ'S (Tiesto, Hardwell, Stonebridge, MYNC CR2 Records, Sunnery & Ryan, Kryder, W&W, Judge Jules, Liquid Todd + many more…) The Future: With an international distribution deal, multiple signed records slated for release, and a monthly house music residency in NYC, the sky's the limit for Michael Anthony.         About The DJ Sessions - “The DJ Sessions” is a Twitch/Mixcloud "Featured Partner” live streaming/podcast series featuring electronic music DJ's/Producers via live mixes/interviews and streamed/distributed to a global audience. Moby, the biggest selling electronica artist in history, ponders the question: why did so many people hate my guts? Born Richard Melville Hall (so nicknamed because Moby Dick author Herman Melville's an ancestor) he grew up on food stamps in fancy Darien, CT, became an NYC DJ and released the huge-in-Europe dance single “Go” in 1991. Fame and fortune (and many threesomes) followed the release of 1999's Play, but happiness eluded him. His surreal new documentary Moby Doc documents his brutal childhood, his rise and fall from pop stardom, and the drugs and booze that nearly did him in. Host Andrew Goldman goes deep on sex, coke, sex-on-coke, artistic purity and what he learned from that Natalie Portman kerfuffle. Plus! That time he put his penis on Donald Trump.

In this conversation, we talk about the duo’s transition from band to genre-fusing EDM act, the expanded sonic palette (how we love this phrase) electronic music lends itself to, the future of melodic dance music, the 20 year NYC music cycle, how DJs are leading the charge in the NYC music scene (Marleah is a little tough on bands here, sorry), what the underground looks like, and how “you really can’t stop people from being tribal”. INTERVIEW BEGINS AT 8:40 Episode 24 of Club Management has arrived and this time we welcome producer, nightlife curator and label boss, Dion McKenzie to the show. You might know her as @TYGAPAW, the NYC DJ and producer that’s smashing the societal confines of the patriarchy one beat at a time. She’s a core figure within NYC’s LGBTQ nightlife community as the creator of @FakeAccent, a label and party that is notoriously dedicated to incredible music as well as a home for black, brown and the LGBTQIA+ community to perform and be themselves. Deeply inspired from Dion’s Jamaican roots and her experience living as an immigrant in NYC, Fake Accent gives a platform and home to black, queer and non-binary artists to release music and art. For Dion, Fake Accent was a way for her to create a little taste of home after she left Jamaica in 2002 to attend Parsons in NYC. The move also served as an escape from the painful reminder of Jamaica’s cultural issues with homophobia and misogyny. For Dion, coming to terms and learning to love her own queerness, she found roots in NYC and a space to truly be herself. In this episode, Shannon speaks with TYGAPAW about her musical journey, how to empower yourself through identity and the state of unrest currently with violence and police brutality. She also shares her thoughts on how these societal issues impact the Trans community. In addition, TYGAPAW sheds light on her new project "Ode To Black Trans Lives", a 3 track stellar EP that melds breakbeat rhythms and industrial clashes to shed light on the policing of the Black Trans community. This week on Pink Among Men we are pivoting our conversation, slightly, and are joined by our wonderful friend and fellow filmmaker, Hans Augustave. Hans recently released a short visual poem titled Before I Knew, which is a visceral poem on a young Black man's journey of developing in a white world. In this episode, Hans chats with us about micro-aggressions, how he left the pre-med world to pursue his art as well as what it means to be sober curious.   Hans Augustave is an up and coming filmmaker who isn’t a stranger to the art of storytelling. His journey has taken him from the art of spoken word, to the stage with his one-man show The Lost and Found and now to the screen with his latest project Before I Knew; a visual poem depicting the subtle and not so subtle ways Black men come to the realization that they are seen as less than Human. Hans is also co-producer on a documentary feature film The Forgotten Occupation  which examines the United States’ occupation of Haiti from 1915-1934 and its negative impacts on Haiti’s current politics. The documentary is told through the lens of Haitian-American director Alain Martin, and his complex relationship with his grandfather, a man who lived through the occupation but only spoke fondly of the country that fueled their motherland’s downfall.    Hans bit his teeth as a digital video producer for BLUR a startup with an in-house production team. There he directed, shot, and edit dozens of ads for the digital space. He then moved to to the independent film world where he currently works an an Assistant Director.    As DJ Hanzi, Hans is the founder of the popular and growing sober-curious dance party, Reprieve. It’s a pop-up Brooklyn party where people leave their souls on the dance floor instead of their puke! It’s part Funk, part House, part Pride, very Black and ALL Love! It’s defying the misconception that no booze & no drugs = no fun. As a DJ for the past 8 years, and sober for the last 2, Hanzi not only brings his knowledge of all music to the party, but he features a different NYC DJ at each uniquely-themed Reprieve.  Hans' love for all Humans and for Life itself can be felt when he spreads it through his art, whether in his stories, on set, or while playing music.

Justin introduced himself to me when we first met. It was very strange and uncomfortable for me. You know those moments you remember every detail of, like you can replay and feel the entire thing in your mind? I was DJing every night at this point, but it was early days of my becoming some version of a respectable dance music DJ. I know what club it was, but I don't know which iteration of it, like one of those spaces in Meatpacking that changed names every year. I was hanging, and went to the DJ booth to drop my bag, which was just kinda DJ etiquette that one DJ would watch another DJ's gear. And so I kinda abruptly went to the booth and dropped it without interrupting the guy. But Justin turned and introduced himself, and I felt like such a fucking jackass entering his booth like that. He'd never remember this nor describe it this way, but I really hated myself at that moment. It just wasn't the way I wanted to meet someone I looked up to. I called Eli Escobar the preeminent NYC DJ, but Justin Strauss is singular in his position. His first residency was at the Mudd Club in the early 80s, and he's DJ'd NYC consistently, and on the highest level, since then. He's the DJ's DJ. He's like the guy we all look at to do right by. I remember when I got to book Justin at my parties was a cool surprising moment. It seems obvious that I'd eventually play with him, but it was validating to me. I always thought of him as someone far off, like cooler and more credible than me. Getting to know him over the years has taught me a lot, his humility and sincerity. I love looking at how much he loves what he does. It makes me love it more. On another less sentimental level, the music he releases is always just the perfect dance floor tone. Right now, he's got Each Other, Extra Credit and Trading Places. That's in addition to Whatever/Whatever, A/JUS/TED, Milk & Cookies and man, I don't even know, he's got a lot of music to dive into. Honored to have him on here. --- This episode is sponsored by · Anchor: The easiest way to make a podcast. https://anchor.fm/app --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/teawithsg/message Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/teawithsg/support

Eli is NYC's preeminent DJ. Period. For dance music that is, of course there may be other genres other people I've never met care about. There's been others in the past, but it's been him for a minute now. I think Francoise K and Danny Krivit had times. I see my next guest, Justin Strauss, in this other category, he's always been someone I look up to as creating the situation I've enjoyed, but it's like Justin never required the attention. Eli doesn't ask for any attention either, but he gets it. He tells us the story of Tiki Disco, humble random beginnings turned into NYC's best known party really of the decade. He's got his long desired Eli all night long residency now at House of Yes. Welcome addition to NYC dance music calendar after Francoise's Monday Cielo ending. I planned to actually post Eli as my first DJ episode, born and raised NYC DJ, but I wanted to wait until Sunday, so I swapped with Scuba. Sunday, May 24...if I were in NYC. I'd be at Tiki Disco. So cue up one of his mixes after you listen, and pretend for a bit. --- This episode is sponsored by · Anchor: The easiest way to make a podcast. https://anchor.fm/app --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/teawithsg/message Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/teawithsg/support

In Songwriter/Producer/Performer Chas Bronxson's own words, his current approach to music is “working for a cause and not for applause.” Such thinking lends a personal approach to building a new audience of fans in tandem with his label's projects. Additional mastery in the areas of vocal arrangement, video directing/editing, and storyboarding all bring a multidiscipline approach to his work. A sharp business acumen has led his indie label, M.O.U.N. Records, Inc. into the mainstream as of 2017. Once as a part of the group Total Control, he appeared on Chuck Chillout & Kool Chip's, Masters of the Rhythm album as well as Kool DJ Red Alert's, Let's Make It Happen album. As a group member and as a solo artist, he did several promo jingles for local NYC DJ's. He also appeared on a Wendy Williams/Kevin Hunter Mixtape under their Questionmark Entertainment venture, with a parody of Dru Hill's “In My Bed” called “In Your Bed”—then performing under the stage name, Ceelo. He kept the name until Ceelo Green from Goodie Mob emerged, thus the rebirth as ChasBronxson. He placed 1st in the John Lennon Songwriting Contest for R&B in 1999, and winning a Publishing Contract from EMI, further proving he was on a progressive track with his talent. On a humanitarian level, he's most dedicated to raising awareness in music and its history among the youth, such as in highlighting organizations like The Living Legends Foundation to raise funds for artists who are no longer recording music and facing hard times financially. This Bronx bred DJ known as THE WORLD FAMOUS BRUCIE B has had a stellar career that spans over three decades. Over this time period, he has had the experience of working with the most influential personalities in hip hop and has played a vital role in laying the foundation for this multi-billion dollar culture known as hip hop.As an adolescent, BRUCIE B was influenced by hip hop legends such as Kool Herc, DJ Smoky and the Smokatron, Grandmaster Flash, June Bug and Grand Wizard Theodore. He was instantly intrigued by the ability of these DJ's to control an audience over the course of a party. His intrigue escalated into passion and he began to pursue his own career as a DJ.In the late 1970's and early 1980's, BRUCIE B played at countless landmark venues throughout NYC. But the venue most synonymous with his name is "THE ROOFTOP". It is at this disco roller rink, Brucie B solidified his name in hip hop. For nearly a decade, the rooftop was the premier stage for many of today's hip hop icons. Doug E Fresh, Run-DMC, LL Cool J, Busy Bee, Bizmark and KRS-ONE are just a few of the names that as we say today "were in the building." But whether or not a rap performance was on the bill, the constant draw to the rooftop was the man on the turntables, BRUCIE B. His DJ sets were so powerful, there was an instant demand for the live audio recordings.Capitalizing on this demand, Brucie B was able to market and sell these audios to anxious consumers giving birth to the mixtape game. The big time hustlers of that era would pay upwards of $100 to be the first on the street to have the latest Rooftop mixtape (noexaggeration). BRUCIE B's career was blasting off, but as we see toO Often in this hip hop culture, a series of unfortunate events halted the career of "The World Famous".In 1989, a fatal shooting occurred at The Rooftop which permanently closed the venue. Subsequently, within a year's time, BRUCIE B was convicted and sentenced to three years on drug related charges. His Incarceration left a tremendous void in the mixtape game as well as the hip hop night club scene in the NYC area. This void jump started The careers of up and coming NYC DJ's such as Kid Capri, Ron Gee, and Doo Wop.In 1993, Brucie B was released from prison with his passion for the game still in tact. Once the word of his release hit the streets, calls from anxious promoters came pouring in. Brucie B was back andhe didn't lose a step. The timing seemed to be perfect. With hip hop growing faster than any other culture in American history, there was no shortage of work for BRUCIE B.In 1995, Sean "Puffy" Combs recruited BRUCIE B as the in-house DJ for Bad Boy Records. He toured with Puffy and Bad Boy bringing him national recognition. Building on his momentum, BRUCIE B teamed with two other hip hop icons, DJ Hollywood and LoveBug Starski, two form the group THE VETERANS. In 1998, this rap trio released the smash single 'The Medicine". This club banger, which featured sampled music from "The Benjamins", became a party anthem around the nation. In 2001, BRUCIE B expanded his resume by teaming up with Damon Dash and Roc-A-Fella Records. In this partnership, BRUCIE B landed a position as Music Consultant/Supervisor for the label. He was also featured in the 2002 release, "Paid in Full" which was a film based on a true Harlem story during the time period of the era of the Rooftop. BRUCIE B continues to have a good working relationship with Damon Dash through the Roc-A-Fella break up.Today, BRUCIE B is still one the culture's premier mixtape and club DJS. In October of 2005, BRUCIE B launched a new company B-U-NO ENTERTAINMENT. Under this company, BRUCIE B will launch a new clothing line, engage in artist management, and release three hundred volumes of exclusive Rooftop audio. A documentary based on the life of THE WORLD FAMOUS will be also be released under B-U-NO ENTERTAINMENT. See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.

DJ CHAUNCEY D is self-taught and that is what has created his most unique sound, style and sensibility. DJ CHAUNCEY D has supplied the… sleazy soundscape for many of New York City’s gay “hot spots” such as: Rock Bar, The Ritz,  Beetlejuice @ Nowhere (his former monthly gig), Boysroom, Daddy @ Vlada, GRUFF @ The Eagle, Hugs, Stonewall, Sugarland (Williamsburg, Brooklyn), The Chapel @ Limelight, The Cock, The Dugout, Woof! @ View Bar, and Woof! (Philadelphia). DJ CHAUNCEY D’s taste in music is constantly expanding along with his professional music resume. His insatiable need to share brand new musical discoveries is only matched by his love for New Wave, Disco, and the Classic House that served as the soundtrack of his arrival on the New York City club scene in the mid-90s. NEXT Magazine once labeled him a “queer celebrity” and DJ CHAUNCEY D constantly searches for and finds ways to twinkle. OBaH stands for OldskoolBeatsAndHarmonies for a very good reason... the son of veteran NYC DJ/Record Dealer, Baba Chico, DJ OBaH had the world's best funk, jazz & soul records at his fingertips. Armed with his father's epic record collection, OBaH quickly made his mark on the NYC club scene, becoming the resident DJ at several nightclubs in his native Brooklyn. A continuous mix of Jackin House tracks! Spun by DJ Jesplay Welcome all this is my very first podcast! I was a mobile NYC DJ for many years and dropped out of the scene for a while. Recently I purchased software(FutureDecks Lite)and a few dozen records at Traxsource.com so I'm back on the scene like a sex machine...LOL. Anyway It's pretty solid mix I think but to compared to amazingly skilled DJs out there, I still have a long way to go. But this is strictly a hobby of mine and hopefully no one will be offended by me putting it out there. I love house music and been listening and playing it since the late 80s. I will enjoy to hear what you think good or bad.My hope is to continue making this mixes and getting better with each one. Stay blessed
