Shane Whaley engages in a riveting discussion with historian and author Dr. Claire Hubbard-Hall. Known for her expertise in the history of women in intelligence, Claire brings to light the overlooked yet monumental roles women have played in British Intelligence. Her book titled Her Secret Service - The Forgotten Women of British Intelligence aims to challenge the male-dominated narrative of intelligence history. Recognition and Roles: Changing Perceptions The episode also discusses the broader evolution of women's roles in British intelligence, shedding light on figures like Jane Sismore, MI5's first officer, and Mary Shearer, MI5's first female agent handler. Claire elaborates on how societal changes, particularly during wartime when men were at the front, necessitated the inclusion of women in more substantial roles. However, progress was slow, often hinging on the approval and support of male counterparts. Winifred Spink, a strikingly attractive woman born into a Plymouth Brethren family, was a rebel and suffragette who defied conventions of her time. Fluent in French and German, she also mastered car mechanics and excelled as a secretary. Shortly before the 1916 revolution, she broke new ground as the first female intelligence officer with the British mission to Petrograd, narrowly escaping execution during her time there. Bold and liberated, she chronicled her numerous romantic liaisons in her diary, referring to them as “another scalp.” Equally remarkable was Olga Gray, who joined MI5 in 1931 and successfully infiltrated the British Communist Party as secretary to its leader, Harry Pollitt, ultimately exposing a Soviet spy ring. Joan Bright, another inspiration for the character of Miss Moneypenny, was lauded as the "organising genius of the War Office secretariat" during the Second World War. She became the gatekeeper to the War Office's secrets and a valuable source for historians throughout her life. Despite her significant contributions, Gray received little support and was eventually abandoned by MI5, showcasing the institutional barriers women faced. Shining a Light on the Forgotten Women of British Intellgence As Dr Claire Hubbard-Hall continues to uncover these hidden stories, her work is instrumental in revising our understanding of espionage history. By highlighting the indispensable roles women have played, she not only corrects historical oversights but also paves the way for future generations to appreciate and recognize the silent heroines of intelligence. For those interested in delving deeper into these narratives, Claire's book "Her Secret Service" is available in the UK and will be released in the US as "Secret Servants of the Crown: Women, British Intelligence" in February. Join us in celebrating the remarkable forgotten women of British Intelligence.
Manchester Adored did it again, pulled an amazing line up out of the hat, securing two of the 90s legends that influenced and helped shape my sound… Allister Whitehead and Jeremy Healy. Adored is always one of the highlights of my gig calendar, causing me to dig really deep and giving me the perfect opportunity to put together a mix that reflected THE decade of the dance scene, packed with tracks from the glamorous house of Peruvia and Miss Moneypenny's and Cream's main room, but with some modern and Manchester twists.Settle in for the ride and enjoy x

With housing a seeming perennial nightmare, we're going to look at some nightmare houses, kicking off with an absolute, stone cold classic - Robert Wise's “The Haunting” (that's the 1963 one, not the abomination that is the 1999 version with Qui-Gon Jinn). Adapted from the novel by Shirley Jackson “The Haunting of Hill House” (again, not to be confused with the TV series that bears its name, which, whilst loved by many, can, frankly, suck a fat one compared to the book, or the 1963 film). It's a film in which we discover that Dr Jacoby is the bastard child of Dean Stockwell and Andy Serkis; that Miss Moneypenny didn't need to hook up with James Bond when she had the dashing moustache of Dr Markway to come home to; and that the guy who brought us “The Sound of Music” can also scare the living shit out of you, simply by banging on a door. A cinematic masterpiece based on a literary masterpiece, “The Haunting” is still an effectively tense and scary film 60 years after its release, and remains an excellent lesson to filmmakers of how to successfully adapt a book to screen. Watch (or re-watch) to avoid spoilers and join us.
Our second premiere of the day is an acid-soaked rework of Bon Voyag's High Power from Manchester-born producer Andrew Sant. The pumping refix is made specifically for the early hours, as it comes loaded with punchy drums, menacing synth lines, and 90's rave energy. Following the epic Bon Voyage 2023 rework of ‘High Power', F*CLR presents part 2 courtesy of Australian via Manchester House fanatic Andrew Sant. Andrew says: “I was listening to a Colleen Cosmo Murphy mix on YouTube and she played the dub mix of ‘Makin Music' by Gary's Gang. The track really captured my attention and I wanted to try and make something in a similar vein – kind of futuristic electronic disco. So, I developed an instrumental, led by a driving arpeggio. I felt the track needed a vocal hook and as if by magic ‘High Power' fell from the sky”. Mancunian DJ, producer and remixer Andrew Sant now resides in Adelaide, Australia. The founder of The Sweet Fantastic, releasing ‘Do It To The Music' last year on F*CLR, Andrew has also released and remixed on labels such as 3 AM Recordings, Tri-Circle, Tarantic, Kolour Open Bar, and Playmore. His career has taken him around the globe from Sankey's Soap and the Warehouse Project, Manchester, The Bomb, Nottingham, Miss Moneypenny's at BoHo, Ibiza. The second edition of the ‘High Power' reworks sees Andrew Sant turn his focus directly to the dancefloor, capturing the essence of 90's rave with a more contemporary and pulsating approach. Vintage-style acid squelches play off sinister synth hooks and quivering bass grooves for a pumping slice of dancefloor ecstasy. Andrew Sant remains thoroughly faithful to the high-powered energy of the original while lacing his rework with an extra dose of hazy rave energy. Now that borders have opened up post pandemic, backpackers have been slow to return to Australia. Despite a number of initiatives, the number of travellers is low. And that's having an impact on businesses who need staff. David Reid explores the Australian working holiday visa scheme, which was set up fifty years ago to encourage young people to travel and work. It's not been without problems, and recently there have been allegations of exploitation and even abuse. So is the visa scheme the right solution for the Australian labour crunch? Or should government step in and rethink the whole set up? David speaks to Lee Thurston who runs Miss Moneypenny's restaurant in Noosa, on the east coast of Queensland. Lee is from the UK but has settled in Australia. Lee said when they came to open up after the pandemic, all the backpackers had gone home. So he's had to train up local teenagers instead. Hamish Hill runs Nomad's hostel in Noosa. He tells David it's noticeable how many vacancies there are and the impact that's happening. He'd like fewer regulations on backpackers. Professor Stephen Howes, director of the development policy centre at the Australian National University, explains how the visa scheme works, and how it's changed from its original intention. And David visits a small farm run by Joe Lyons, who has 50 hectares growing avocados and macadamias in Bundaburg near Queensland. He and other farmers are rethinking their reliance on backpackers. They're currently staffed by 100% Australian labour. Presented and produced by David Reid. (Image: Fruit picking. Credit: Getty)

On this episode of The James Bond A-Z Podcast hosts Tom Butler, Brendan Duffy, and Tom Wheatley take a closer look at Miss Moneypenny, the secretary to Bond's boss M, who has appeared in 23 of the 25 Bond films, and both non-canon Bond films. Did you know that during Lois Maxwell's 14 films as Moneypenny she only appeared for a total of 20 minutes, and spoke fewer than 200 words? We explore the origins of Ian Fleming's character and the people who are said to have inspired her. We take a look at all the screen incarnations as played by Lois Maxwell, Barbara Bouchet, Pamela Salem, Caroline Bliss, Samantha Bond, and Naomie Harris. We also discuss which incarnation is our favourite, the spin-off book The Moneypenny Diaries, and whether the character still has a place in the Bond series 60 years on. Along the way we discuss “28 Weeks Later”, Abattoir Fermé's “Monster!”, “Blood Red Sky” and “The Empty Man” Watch (or re-watch) to avoid spoilers, and join us. Bond, James Bond... Nearly seventy years ago, writer Ian Fleming introduced the world to his most famous, iconic action hero. A decade later, Sean Connery portrayed the derring-do secret agent on the silver screen; with actors Lazenby, Moore, Dalton, Brosnan, and Craig taking on the challenge throughout the following years. Bond's extensive skillset and gritty determination notwithstanding, his numerous world-saving missions could only be successful with the unflagging assistance of M, Q, Miss Moneypenny, and his American connection, CIA agent Felix Leiter. And then there are the gadgets, oh those remarkable gadgets! So, glimpsing the specter of this week's high-energy topic, we urge you not to engage the ejector seat rockets just yet... rather, mix a martini (shaken, not stirred), and sit back with Steve and Kevin as two our hosts discuss the most universally known fictional spy in the game of international espionage. It's The Daylights... The Living Daylights! With a US release date of the 31st of July, 1987, this James Bond movie was the introduction of Timothy Dalton in the lead role. It's a slightly more grounded adventure compared to the previous era of the franchise but still has all the classic one-liners, action set-pieces, and green flags. Directed by Sam Mendes, and featuring a chilling villain in Mr Silva played by Javier Bardem with a standout theme song by Adele this was a top-class Bond film. You are in the right place! Your eyes do not deceive you! We're actually talking about spy romances this week and no Sarahs were harmed during the discussion, but that's probably because it was a discussion with one of her favorite people, the fantastic Nana Malone! We talk about Nana's immense career, about how she took matters into her own hands and started making the covers she wished to see in the world, about her Brown Nipple reading challenge, about her latest book, a Kobo original, The Spy in 3B, and about porny ferris wheels. Real ordinary stuff. We also get to the bottom of why Sarah doesn't like spy romances generally, but why she can't get enough of Mr. & Mrs. Smith retellings. Our next read along in some number of weeks (three? four?) is Kylie Scott's Lead, one of our longtime favorites. Get it at Amazon, Apple Books, B&N, Kobo, or Bookshop.org! Thank you, as always, for listening! Please follow us on your favorite podcasting app, and if you are up for leaving a rating or review there, we would be very grateful! Show NotesWelcome Nana Malone back to the pod, and if you want to hear more about the Brown Nipple Challenge, check out her Instagram. She is an amazing author and recently became her own cover model after failing to find good stock photos for her books. If you don't know how stock photography works, here's a brief primer on how they can be used to make book covers and teasers. The problems with finding stock photography that is truly diverse is a well-known problem. For most authors, custom photography is cost-prohibitive. Nana's favorite photographer is Wander Aguiar. If you want to hear more about romance covers and their history, Sarah was interviewed on an episode of the 99% Invisible podcast about covers this week. Head over and have a listen after you listen to this! Just in case you need a quick review, there are currently three paths in publishing: self-published, indie, and traditional. It's common to use “indie” and “self-published” interchangeably, which why Nana described an author as “their own business.” Strictly speaking, Indie means small, independent presses, such as Violet Gaze Press. And Trad, or traditional publishing, refers to the Big Five (Big Four?) New York publishing houses: Hachette, HarperCollins, Macmillan, Penguin Random House and Simon & Schuster. A little about the history of Kobo and why it's worth supporting them. No one likes it when the Mary Sue character has no idea what's going on. Turns out that Ferris Wheel sex is a real thing at Coachella. And Myrtle Beach. And Vegas. And Kindle Unlimited.Daniel Craig jumps on a train. Pierce Brosnon catches a plane.Faberge Eggs have a storied history and are very fancy. The hero of Night Magic is not that John McClane. If you like a Cold War thriller, you might enjoy a bonkers 80s spy thriller, The Charm School by Nelson DeMille. Jen did love Lies, but had some thoughts about the ending and unreliable narrators that you can read after you finish the book. Miss Moneypenny. We also mentioned some movies and TV shows about spies: Mr. and Mrs. Smith, La Femme Nikita, Spy, James Bond, True Lies, The Americans, Kingsman, and The Scarlet Pimpernel.

True House Stories Podcast with special guests by Lenny Fontana
TRUE HOUSE STORIES W/ DJ SNEAK SPECIAL SHOW 2021 #001 - PART 2 DJ Sneak (born Carlos Sosa; November 5, 1969) is a Puerto Rican born American DJ and record producer raised in Chicago, Illinois, United States. He is noted as being one of the second wave of Chicago house producers, (alongside Derrick Carter, Cajmere/Green Velvet, Gemini, James Curd and Paul Johnson) as well as a member of the vanguard of late-1990s United States house producers. In 1983, Sneak moved to Chicago from Puerto Rico, where his early musical experiences and influences were rooted in salsa, merengue and Latin orchestras. In Chicago, Sneak found inspiration in underground house music, warehouse parties and "old school" mix tapes from the early pioneers, Farley Jackmaster Funk, Ralphi Rosario, Steve Hurley and local radio station shows played on WBMX. Sneak earned his nickname rocking graffiti-tags and began working at retail stores as an airbrush artist. His development as a DJ came while working regular mobile DJ jobs and local nightclubs. Sneak focused on his music production and started his independent label - Defiant Records. In 1994, while still working at local store Gramophone Records, Sneak met Cajmere (Green Velvet) owner of Cajual and Relief Records. Cajmere released three of Sneak's catalyst tracks, which helped bring him international recognition. In Ibiza, Sneak has participated in several events with Ministry of Sound, Cream, Manumission, and Miss Moneypenny's. Sneak currently resides in Los Angeles, California, US. Lyrics by DJ Sneak are featured in the Daft Punk song, "Digital Love", from their 2001 album, Discovery. In 2001, Sneak launched a new record label Magnetic Recordings, where he has been releasing new music, with compilations to come, along with the introduction of new musical talent. Source: Wikipedia
Just a nice discussion about everyone’s favorite lady, Miss Moneypenny.

Movie Meltdown - Episode 528 This episode we return to our running science fiction series to discuss "Terror Beneath the Sea"! A strange Japanese/American co-production from 1966 featuring sea creatures, an evil plot to take over the world... and a young Sonny Chiba! And while we try to figure out the mystery that is Peggy Neal, we also cover… Dr. No, Cromwell, a lot of model work, a giant space chicken, homing missile technology, Richard Harris, the leather-lined office, Japanese monster movies, a language barrier, Biloxi, Mississippi, a gaggle of reports, a healthy dose of misogyny, wearing sunglasses all the time, picaresque vs. classical storytelling, Kill Bill, these are our terror machines, they put this poor hapless dude into a tube, General of the mismatched Navy, the evil pinball machine that controls all the fish-people, Bela Lugosi, I feel like I’m watching Bergman on speed, progressive photography, Austin Powers, put into a chamber, toxic dumping, set the fish cyborgs to vibrate, well I get to get out of my cell for a little while, some Navy dudes, basically just automatons doing what we're told, murder them a whole lot of interns, it is his job to carry this film, Godzilla, a certain kinetic style of directing, Jackie Chan, Miss Moneypenny, The X from Outer Space, fire underwater, Timothy Dalton, inserting some lungs and I left my camera at the bottom of the ocean. Spoiler Alert: Full spoilers for as much of the plot as we can make sense of for "Terror Beneath the Sea". So go watch the movie before you listen. “...while wandering through they get captured by some fish-people and brought to a very futuristic-looking underwater lab which also looks like the set of Sealab 2021 reconstructed by the creators of MST3K.”

How many times has James Bond died? In this episode, as rumours swirl about the fate of 007 in No Time To Die, we ponder how many times James Bond is assumed to be dead or pretends to be dead, and how effective was the ruse? Along the way, we walk around a SPECTRE shrubbery, mourn poor crater guy and Bond's blue-collar victims, discover a crocodile puppet show, the villains who must have left the oven on, Miss Moneypenny's grief counseling, and BBC photographers who are always in the right place. We end with deciding how we would want to see James Bond meet his maker. The recording took place on February 7th, 2020 in the USA, UK, and Spain. How did the character of Moneypenny evolve from page to screen? In light of the news that Naomie Harris has suggested an independent Moneypenny adventure, we delve into the character of M’s long-serving secretary and the other women of the MI6 offices – both in Fleming’s work and the film adaptations. We discuss the way the characters of Loelia Ponsonby, Mary Goodnight, and Miss Moneypenny merged to form the screen incarnation of the latter and Fleming’s grappling with the reception and characterisation of women in the workplace. Along the way we wonder where the other 00s have gone, stumble into Moneypenny’s wardrobe, and upon Desmond Llewelyn’s fridge, muse on Moneypenny’s missed opportunities, Rami Malek’s least-likely character name in No Time To Die, our Netflix spin-off that will never get made, catch up with Honey Ryder and her journey through the encyclopaedia, and return to the topics of unsurprising surprise castings, the attitudes of filmmakers and treating audiences with respect. Jury hin oder her. Keine Lizenz also. Buchtipp * Stef Stauffer: Hingerhang. Zytglogge-Verlag 2018
On October 10 1990 Jane Vivian Moneypenny dies in a boating accident in North Uist, Scotland. Exactly ten years later her niece, Kate Westbrook, receives a large trunk containing forty handwritten diaries, containing the memoires of Miss Moneypenny, personal secretary to M., the head of MI6. As Kate discovers the truth to her aunts secret life, her own life seems to get caught up in ongoing covert affairs… The trilogy The Moneypenny Diaries (2005; 2006 and 2008) was written by Samantha Weinberg. Don interviews Samantha and together they talk about the character in general, making difficult decisions, traveling around the world for research purposes and juggling multiple timelines until your head starts to spin. The podcast begins with an audioclip from the first book, Guardian Angel, narrated by Eleanor Bron and published by Ian Fleming Publications Ltd Audible Studios. In this podcast, we will be discussing the book Spymistress: The True Story of the Greatest Female Secret Agent of World War II, by William Stevenson. We meet Vera Atkins, a British spy. Vera’s work has never been given the same spotlight as that of other spies or resistance fighters who were part of the war effort. Perhaps that is because she was a woman in a man’s world, or perhaps it is due to a controversy that surrounds her involving the collapse of one of the networks of spies in France. Either way, what there is no controversy about is that she was one of the most important Allied spies and that she was indirectly and directly responsible for the training and success of many of the resistance fighters in German-occupied France. On a more humorous side note, it is also believed that Vera is the basis for the Miss Moneypenny character in Ian Flemming’s James Bond novels.INDEX0:00 Intro and Background of the Book1:41 F-Section and the Controversy7:10 The Controversy14:16 It Takes a Special Breed18:08 Connections22:00 Biuro Szyfrow (Cipher Bureau)30:19 Battle of Taranto32:35 Adapting to Your Environment36:02 Making Decisions40:42 Courage43:27 Final Thoughts and Next EpisodeVisit www.modernathenas.com for links to all episodes. One Moore Time for Roger Moore as James Bond and for Lois Maxwell as Miss Moneypenny. A View To A Kill marks the end of the Moore Era and also features. Christopher. Walken. As a Bond. Villain. His manic, machine-gunning, blimp-flying villainy is bemusing to Richard. Meanwhile Jonathan becomes far more amused by actresses with funny names, marking a new low point in his immaturity. Together, they (hopefully) bring an end to the recurring segment "Is It Rape or Not?" as the 1980s is possibly a more enlightened, feminist place for 007.
Let's make your money work for you. Here's some brill tips to help you to stop burying your head in the sand and make it rain with Miss Moneypenny.
The Matt and Ellis discuss James Bond. The Matt has never seen a James Bond film and tries to get the big picture from pop culture references.

You miss 100% of the shots you dont take. Strong advice that's been used to great effect by such notable Monkey's you may know, such as: Han Solo, Clint Eastwood, DJ Hans, Wayne Gretzky, Chuck Norris and Miss Moneypenny to name a few. The dicey part of the process comes in knowing WHEN to take the shot, and this is what defines a Master from the rest of us. Tricky indeed, but yes you too can learn. Find a Master and follow! Unlearn what you have learned. Be ready so that when your time comes you can make your shot count. So please everyone, dance and enjoy this set mixed by one of the great Masters, DJ Lithium. A DJ never afraid to shoot first! We can all learn a lot from him, with much love and respect to his years of service to the DJ and music scene, and his steadfast dedication to the preservation of vinyl records. So take your shot and mind what you have learned, save you it can! Love always, The DrunKen Monkey.
