What Americans Get Wrong About ADHD

In 1937, a Rhode Island psychiatrist named Charles Bradley ran an experiment on 30 child patients who had complained of headaches. He gave them an amphetamine, that is a stimulant, called Benzedrine, which was popular at the time among jazz musicians and college students. The experiment failed, in one sense. The headaches persisted. But he noted that half of the children responded in what he called spectacular fashion, as teachers said these children seemed instantly transformed by the drug. Rather than being bored by their homework, they were interested in it. Rather than being hyperactive, they became more “placid and easygoing.” Rather than complaining to parents about chores, they would make comments like: “I start to make my bed, and before I know it, it is done.” Bradley published the results in The American Journal of Insanity, and it marks perhaps the origins of our treatment model for ADHD. Attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder, or ADHD, has always been hard to define. It's harder still in an age when everybody feels like modern entertainment and the omnipresence of our screens make it hard for anybody to concentrate and sit still. But clearly, some people struggle with concentration and stillness more than others. ADHD has many classic symptoms, but it is typically marked by patterns of inattentiveness—frequently losing items, failing to follow multistep instructions—or by hyperactivity: say, fidgeting, or, for some children, being literally incapable of sitting in one place for more than half a second. In a way, I've always disliked the phrase "attention-deficit disorder," because ADHD is not about a deficit of ordinary attention but a surplus of feral attention—an overflowing of raw, uncontrollable noticing. Last week, the journalist Paul Tough published a long, 9,000-word essay in The New York Times Magazine about ADHD called "Have We Been Thinking About ADHD All Wrong?" Tough asked hard questions about why diagnoses are soaring. Is this evidence of an epidemic? Or is it evidence of overdiagnosis? Paul is today's guest. We talk about his blockbuster essay, what its loudest critics said about it, what its loudest advocates said about it, and why they both might be wrong. One of the ways to win a pro wrestling match is to go for the cover, or pin your opponent's shoulders to the mat for three seconds. It's an essential element of the sport, just as the cover song is an essential part of music. On this episode, Andrew and returning guest Andy LaBarre go for the cover, so to speak, and play a bunch of great cover songs from over the years. Artists played include Charles Bradley, Dolly Parton, D'Angelo, William Shatner, Eddie Hazel, Chris Cornell, The Power Station, Heart, and many more. The songs on this episode may not be originals, but they can still keep you down for the three count.Theme song: "Hemispheres" by Silent PartnerTwitter: @MusicoftheMatBluesky: @MusicoftheMat / @justandrew / @trillyrobinsonAndy's Substack: warmpathways.substack.comAll VOW podcasts, articles, previews, and reviews: VoicesofWrestling.comJoin the VOW Discord to discuss Music of the Mat and other shows/topics: VoicesofWrestling.com/DiscordDonate to Music of the Mat and other VOW podcasts: VoicesofWrestling.com/DonateAdvertising Inquiries: https://redcircle.com/brandsPrivacy & Opt-Out: https://redcircle.com/privacy

The fabric of the Edmonton community, impossible recreation, and top level quality. Michael Rault (Michael Rault, Pearl Charles) "The Edmonton-born, Montreal-based singer-songwriter-producer began working on its songs in earnest after winding down the tour supporting his 2015 full-length Living Daylight, but getting to the point of having an album was a process. "Musically it came out of a period of dissatisfaction, creatively and personally, as I found myself pushing against the limitations of my abilities and approaches to making music." But those delays eventually paid off. As he was working on Tonight's songwriting, Rault kept entering the orbit of Wayne Gordon, the producer / head engineer at Brooklyn's legendary Daptone studio—first through opening stints for the late firebrand Charles Bradley, then while on tour with Aussie shredders King Gizzard and the Lizard Wizard. Sending Gordon early sketches of some songs led to Rault heading to Daptone for what was initially going to be a two-week recording stint. Midway through that Gordon approached him about signing to the Daptone Records label's fledgling rock spinoff, Wick—and becoming the first Canadian member of the Daptone family. Signing with Wick also led to Rault finishing the record at Daptone and bringing Gordon on as co-producer." New York City native and longtime contributor to its music and nightlife scene, W. Andrew Raposo is best known as a crazy dog dad and for his work with DFA records--most notably with Hercules and Love Affair, Still Going, and Jayson Green & The Jerk--and as a founding member of cosmic dance floor stalwarts Midnight Magic. His studio, La Piscina Recordings, has hosted such clubland luminaries as Justin Strauss, Eli Escobar, and Nomi Ruiz as well as rocketing torchbearers The Illustrious Blacks, Muscle Cars and Cesar Toribio. Raposo continues to tour both on stage and in the DJ booth with Hess Is More, Midnight Magic and 79.5 (Razor N Tape) bringing his three layer dip of post-punk, psychedelic disco, and haunted-house to sweaty basements and debaucherous mountain chalets all over the world. For the Record is a conversation series where we speak with all manner of music heads — DJs, music journos, indie label captains, record shop owners, listening bar kingpins, et al — about their stories + the music that makes them. Join the Crate Coalition: https://discord.gg/sAaG6a7bv4 Formed in 2009 by Tiffany Roth, W. Andrew Raposo, Morgan Wiley, and Carter Yasutake, Midnight Magic is responsible for some of the most beloved 'new classics' from the disco-revival era of the early oughts including club mainstays "Beam Me Up" and "Drop Me A Line." Through their collaboration with Brooklyn jazz legend Nick Roseboro, former Charles Bradley & The Extraordinaires drummer Caito Sanchez, saxophone and synthesizer wizard Julio Monterrey and past members Max Goldman, Andrew Frawley, and Jason Disu, Midnight Magic casts a genre defying spell on sweaty discotheques and festival stages across the universe. Jonah is joined on today's episode by Tom Standage, a historian and the deputy editor of The Economist, to make the case that rapid change caused by innovation is nothing new in the annals of history. Jonah and Tom consider why man always jumps to doomsday when new technologies emerge, debate the merits of an organic diet, and discuss the storied history of brews and lager. Plus: the mythologization of the Medieval Age, a soliloquy to honor the historical lynchpin that is the potato, and the supernatural powers of a good cocktail. --- Redactie: Laura Iwuchukwu, Nina Ramkisoen, Geerte Verduijn, Maartje Willems Eindredactie: Bram Vollaers

Homer Steinweiss - Percussion Discussion - Episode 118 Joining me today is Homer Steinweiss, Homer is a drummer, writer and producer from New York, he has an enviable CV of both live and recording credits including - Sharon Jones & The Dap Kings, Fleet Foxes, Lady Ga Ga, Bruno Mars, Texas, Amy Winehouse, St Vincent, Michael Buble, Charles Bradley, Sheryl Crow, Rufus Wainright, Daniel Merriweather and literally hundreds more! Join Homer and myself as we talk about his quite remarkable career so far - we talk about his work with late Sharon Jones & The Dap Kings and the effort that went in to making those beautifully crafted and incredibly authentic sounding albums, including the approach of the producer, recording equipment and of course the vintage drums themselves, something Homer is very passionate about (as am i) We also talk about his work with the late great Charles Bradley and how his soulful style was the perfect fit with Homers beautiful and equally soulfull touch on the drums. Homer speaks at length about how he thinks drummers should recieve a writing credit for coming up with a drum part for a song, he explains that had this happened many years ago then the likes of the late Clyde Stubblefield could have had a much more comfortable lifestyle later in life as the composer of one of the most sampled drum beats in history "The Funky Drummer" We also talk about the sessions with Mark Ronson about the Amy Winehouse Back to Black sessions of which Homer played on half of the tracks on this iconic album, he lso tells about how Valerie was recorded live in the studio with Amy Winehouse singing! This conversation was nothing short of remarkable, Homers name deserves far more recognition than it presently has, an incredible drummer, writer & producer plus with a great head for business too.Homer kindly offered to let me use the beautiful playing that you hear over the titles totally free of charge, definitely more drummy and more in keeping with the nature of this podcast.www.homersteinweiss.comPlease rate and review this podcast if you are enjoying it - Thanks!

Autosport F1 - Formula 1 and Motorsport

Charles Bradley and Mandy Curi join Martyn Lee to look back at yesterdays action at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway. The 107th running of the Indianapolis 500 was nothing short of spectacular, with Josef Newgarden clinching his first-ever Indy 500 victory. In a heart-stopping climax, Newgarden executed a last-lap overtake on Marcus Ericsson to take the checkered. But the race wasn't without its share of controversy and drama. We saw three red flags due to various crashes, including a frightening incident involving Felix Rosenqvist and Kyle Kirkwood. We'll be discussing these incidents, the winners and losers, and the contentious finish that has everyone talking. We'll also delve into Marcus Ericsson's complaints about the late late restart, if there's an influence of F1 on IndyCar, and the safety concerns raised by superspeedway racing. Orquesta Akokán bursts and flows with the spirit of dance orchestras of the 1940's and 1950's of Havana on their debut record of nine tunes - all sparkling, blazing, soulful, and meticulously arranged and composed mambo originals. Together, singer José "Pepito" Gómez, producer Jacob Plasse, and arranger Michael Eckroth, along with Cuba's finest players, young and old, recorded the record live to tape in a three-day session at the legendary and revered Estudios Areito in Cuba – where percussion and piano absolutely pop, and the brilliance of brass is magnified. The recording is the first Spanish-language venture for Daptone Records, (the folks who brought you Sharon Jones and the Dap Kings, Charles Bradley, and other timeless artists) whose old-school techniques and attention to sonic detail ensure a living, breathing warmth. The big band collective Orquesta Akokán joins us to play some of these Cuban Mambo (and rumba, cha-cha and jazzy) tunes in-studio.  -Caryn Havlik

The Brazilian singer and guitarist named Rogê made his mark playing his own brand of samba and samba funk in the clubs of Rio de Janeiro. [Samba in Brazil is rather like the Blues in America, a statement and sound born of the forced migration of Africans, and in both styles, these musical roots grew up and out into many more kinds of popular music.] Now, L.A.-based, Rogê is preparing to release his first album outside Brazil in early 2023, in partnership with producer/guitarist Thomas Brenneck (Menahan Street Band, producer/guitarist for Charles Bradley, Sharon Jones and The Budos Band.) It'll be called Curyman, (his given name is Roger José Cury), and even though the record has a big, almost orchestral sound at time, thanks to string arrangements by fellow Brazilian Arthur Verocai, it all starts with the voice and guitar. Samba star Rogê performs these new tunes with percussionist Stephane San Juan, in-studio. Set list: “A Voz Que Não Se Cala”- (by Stephane San Juan), “Existe Uma Voz”, “Pra Vida”

We had the pleasure of interviewing WILSN over Zoom video!Australian vocal powerhouse WILSN is thrilled to announce her debut album, Those Days Are Over, out February 3 on Ivy League Records/Universal MusicAustralia (Rolling Blackouts C. F., Hatchie). She also revealed a US headline tour (dates below), following her run with Allen Stone. A fusion of pop, soul, Motown and jazz both classic yet contemporary, WILSN's unbelievable voice & honeyed sound on the record are showcased on single & video debuted today on Under the Radar – “Hurts So Bad” featuring Josh Teskey, lead singer of award-winning Melbourne blues-rock band The Teskey Brothers (even Chris Hemsworth is a fan). Built from a trumpet melody by friend & acclaimed horn player Billy Aukstik (Mark Ronson, Erykah Badu, Sharon Jones, Charles Bradley), the heart-wrenching break-up song is accompanied by a video from Triana Hernandez, where the masterful performers are in full flight. “Right before Covid hit, I toured through Europe and the UK with The Teskey Brothers,” WILSN explains. “I was already a fan before this but seeing their show every night and occasionally getting up to sing with them in their set really solidified my love for the band. Josh is one of my favourite singers in the world and I feel super lucky he's singing with me on my debut record.”Studying at Melbourne, Australia's prestigious Victorian College of the Arts and playing shows there, WILSN – real name Shannon Busch - was soon noticed by international publishing juggernaut Pulse Music Group (Kehlani, Yebba) / Native Tongue (Courtney Barnett, Aldous Harding) - even going on to play the Melbourne Grand Prix. She briefly moved to Nashville to work with GRAMMY-winning writers, which helped hone her craft for this full album. The influence of soul and powerhouse vocal divas loom large over her debut album, Those Days Are Over. Songs like “If You Wanna Love Me,” “Tell Me” and “Hurts So Bad” ooze with the sound, feel and all the emotion of classic soul. Yet while the album is steeped in the sounds of yesterday, WILSN and her partner and producer Stephen Charles (Blessed, Tyne James Organ) took care to balance those classic elements with modern production techniques, leaning on Charles' background in hip hop production to amplify the grooves, dialing up the bottom end and keeping a modern excitement in the mix to make sure the record stood up sonically to contemporary releases. The result is a masterful work, at once timeless and of the now. The album will also be on Apple Music Spatial Audio and vinyl via Vinyl Me Please. We want to hear from you! Soul is the most powerful expression of American music--a distinct combination of roots, migration, race, culture, and politics packaged together for your dancing pleasure. But if you thought the sounds of Motown or Stax Records died along with 8-tracks and macramé, you'd be wrong. For two decades, Daptone Records has churned out hard funk and such beautiful soul that these records sparked a musical revolution. Run by a collective of soul-obsessed producers and musicians, the Brooklyn-based independent label launched the careers of artists such as Amy Winehouse, Sharon Jones & The Dap-Kings, Charles Bradley, and Bruno Mars. Daptone's records--and those of the larger soul revival scene--pay homage but never lip service to the original artists, proving that soul is still culturally relevant, and just as exciting as ever. It Ain't Retro: Daptone Records and the 21st-Century Soul Revolution (Jawbone, 2021) charts this revival's players, sounds, and tectonic shifts over the past twenty years, taking you from dingy clubs where soul crazed DJs packed the dancefloor, to just uptown where some of the genre's heaviest musicians jumpstarted the renaissance in a basement studio, and all the way to the White House. This definitive tale of Daptone Records' soulful revolution chronicles the label's history, players, and sounds while dissecting the scene's cultural underpinnings, which continue to reverberate in pop music. The book also contains rare and unseen images of Daptone artists past and present, including Sharon Jones, Charles Bradley, Lee Fields, Antibalas, The Sugarman 3, The Budos Band, and more. FOLLOW US ON TWITTER AND INSTAGRAM @PODONLANSDOWNE Thank the baseball gods: we do not have an absolutely miserable week of Red Sox baseball to recap! We had some highs and lows in the world of our beloved Stockings--encouraging wins and back-breaking losses. The latter mainly has to do with one person. We won't fully spoiler who it is, but we can give you a hint: their name starts with an R and ends with a yan Brasier. But hey, the offense has been more encouraging! Franchy! Story! Raf! The whole gang! ALSO: -The Arkansas baseball raccoon has been living in our minds rent-free -Jake sees Steven Tyler as his fever dream goblin -Liam acquires his white whale from his mortal enemy: Fanatics -We are now, apparently, Pod On Warsaw???? -We need NoHo Hank on the pod to talk some ball and much more, folks!! Opening song is "Baseball" by Hippo Campus, closing song is "Change for the World" by Charles Bradley--may he rest in peace.

Former Waycross, Georgian Justin Minchew, joins us for Ep. 41 – Something In The Water. Now residing in Hermitage, Tennessee, the musician-songwriter currently works as Lead Set Carpenter for country star, Dierks Bentley. Justin's Waycross roots are explored and observed: childhood friends since year one with Uncle Dave's daughter, Meg Stewart; their formation of Folkadelic, a swampy duet formed 20 years later; in and out of several local bands as referenced by Hayshaker's excellent lo-fi video “Dirtkick”, featuring a cameo of Uncle Werewolf (the world desperately needs you!). From Waycross to Atlanta for the next 10 years, Justin found his way into a number of bands: Ocha Larocha, American Anodyne, and Connor Christian and Southern Gothic. Landing in Nashville in 2014, he's been employed by Mr. Bentley for the past eight years and photos indicate he's rubbed shoulders with fine, famous folk such as Travis Tritt, Charles Bradley, Gregg Allman, and Matthew McConaughey. Now to add to that list of notables…Sean Clark and Uncle Dave Griffin. Run by a collective of soul-obsessed producers and musicians, the Brooklyn-based independent Daptones Recordsl launched the careers of artists such as Amy Winehouse, Sharon Jones & The Dap-Kings, Charles Bradley, and Bruno Mars. Daptone's records who paid homage but never lip service to the original artists, proving that soul is still culturally relevant, and just as exciting as ever.Author Jessica Lipsky joins us to chronicle the label's history, players, and sounds while dissecting the scene's cultural underpinnings, which continue to reverberate in pop music. She takes us into the dingy clubs where soul crazed DJs packed the dancefloor, to just uptown where some of the genre's heaviest musicians jumpstarted the renaissance in a basement studio, and all the way to the White House.  This show is part of Pantheon Podcasts.
