We're headed into that time of year where people tend to reflect, take stock and then look forward. On this episode I wanted to catch up with the homebrewing sphere since it continues to drive and inspire a lot of what happens in professional beer. For this panel I'm honored to have three guests who have been making their beer for a long time, are active in their communities, and are constantly doing outreach and education to help everyone interested in the hobby. Annie Johnson is a well-known research & development brewer with extensive experience in the food & beverage and consumer goods industries, and as a software development/IT specialist in state government. Annie has been brewing for over 24 years, is a recognized National Beer Judge and Brewmaster. She most recently won the prestigious Glen Hay Falconer Foundation's Scholarship for Engineering & Brewing to the American Brewers Guild and graduated November, 2020. She is on the American Homebrewers Association Governing Committee, is a PinkBoots Chapter coLead and on the board of the Harriett Baskerville Incubation Project. She makes her home in Seattle, WA and Sacramento, CA. Denny Conn and Drew Beechum are longtime homebrewers and noted personalities in the space. The Maltose Falcons are the oldest home brew club in the US and over the years their members have gone on to change American beer in numerous ways. In this episode, Bret and Mike talk to Drew Beechum who is the Grand Hydrometer of the Maltose Falcons to learn more about how this one home brew club shaped an industry. And in case you're wondering, "Grand Hydrometer" is a fancy way of saying, "club historian."

That's right two of your "favorite" authors - Drew Beechum and Denny Conn are bringing you a new show about the wackiness of beer science and the science of beer wackiness! Where's Drew? Why isn't he in the trailer? Has he turned to the Dark Side of the Force? You'll just have to wait and see for when the podcast drops on November 11th (or the 18th - things are a bit wishy washy in the world of the Internet)! When most brewers think of an experimental beer, odd creations come to mind. This week on Fuhmentaboudit!, hosts Mary Izett and Chris Cuzme are delving into the topic with Drew Beechum and Denny Conn, authors of the book “Experimental Homebrewing: Mad Science in the Pursuit of Great Beer.” Denny and Drew explain that experimental homebrewing is about making good beer–the best beer, in fact. It’s about the tweaking process, designing solid recipes, and blind evaluations. After the break, Drew shares a great story about his guacamole saison and how he and Denny have learned from some crazy mistakes. Tune in for a great show and before you realize it, you’ll be donning a white lab coat and sharing your own thirst quenching results! This program was brought to you by GreatBrewers.com. “The fun part [of brewing] is the crazy wacky flavor thing. I used to cook all the time and I find that this act allows me to express that same kind of poetical sense you get when you’re cooking.” [10:20] “We set it up in the book that even if you do fail you’re learning something from it.” [22:15] —Drew Beechum on Fuhmentaboudit!
