ICE agents are arresting day laborers and raiding businesses across the country. They didn't expect community resistance. This week on The Intercept Briefing, Salvador Sarmiento, the campaign director and lawyer for the 70-member National Day Laborer Organizing Network, and Jonah Valdez, reporter for The Intercept joined host Jordan Uhl to discuss the wave of ICE operations sweeping Los Angeles that have sparked a week of protests and the militarized response from law enforcement. Attorney Isabella Salomão Nascimento also talks to us about our First Amendment right to protest. You can hear the full conversation of The Intercept Briefing on Apple Podcasts, Spotify, or wherever you listen. Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.

This week on the Toy Power Podcast; we recap our attendance at the Adelaide Mega Toy Fair event. This annual event promotes itself for its long running campaign; but with new organisers this year, how did it actually go? We chat towards what we spotted, what we think needs to be improved & what we scored!! Spoiler alert: Pub Lunch & making a day of it with great friends, is always the overall highlight!! Then Trent does an awesome Toyline Retrospective on the early 80's franchise that was: Blackstar! With a Filmation Cartoon airing first in 1981; then a corresponding Toyline from Galoob in 1983! Featuring the fight between our Hero: John Blackstar against the Evil Ruler: Overlord on the Planet Sagar. This Toyline & franchise actually has more ties to Masters Of The Universe than one may think.... There are some EPIC Beasts, questionable modes of transport & the incredibly sort after Ice Castle Playset - this Franchise really tried hard & its interesting to think in a sliding doors parallel reality - could this have been a more popular franchise than Masters Of The Universe?! Then rounding out the episode, we squeeze a quick round table, around some of our Latest Scores! Also, as mentioned in this ep; be sure to checkout the incredibly comprehensive website from Avon Fox - around all the Vintage style Transforming Robots that aren't Hasbro branded! - www.the-liberator.netSupport the show: http://patreon.com/toypowerpodcastSee omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
Across the country, demonstrators are preparing for a weekend of protests against U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement operations, Donald Trump's planned June 14 military parade, and Trump himself.Ground zero for these demonstrations is likely to be Los Angeles, where heavily armed ICE agents have carried out raids at churches, graduations, parking lots, and scores of other gathering spots recently.“ The level of armament that these guys are wearing is out of a GI Joe movie,” said Salvador G. Sarmiento, the campaign director and lawyer for the 70-member National Day Laborer Organizing Network. “It seems like the federal police is just driving around willy-nilly — dressed up as a goon squad — picking up people that they see on a street corner.” “The federal government [is] violently taking people from their work sites in military fashion,” added Jonah Valdez, reporter for The Intercept. This week on The Intercept Briefing, Sarmiento and Valdez joined host Jordan Uhl to discuss the wave of ICE operations sweeping Los Angeles that have sparked a week of protests and the militarized response from law enforcement. As people head to the streets again this weekend, protesters should be informed about their constitutional rights and safety options. The episode also features practical advice from attorney Isabella Salomão Nascimento. You can support our work at theintercept.com/join. Your donation, no matter the amount, makes a real difference. What's up, dudes? Remember when Sears, JC Penney, and Montgomery Wards would print wish books? Chad Young from Horror Movie BBQ and Michael May from After Lunch do, and they're with me to look through the 1985 Sears Wish Book! From clothes to jewelry to toys, it had every gift idea you could possibly want! The book starts off with a nice little poem, spread out every fourth page. What follows immediately are pages of value gifts, including an actual suit of armor. Then there are red pages of gifts under $100. Merry Christmas indeed! Next comes women's fashions followed by jewelry and girls attire. Of course, boys clothes, shoes, men's wear, and accessories come next. After the Christmas decorations are a wide variety of appliances, clocks, dish ware, and sports gear. The best part of the entire publication follows: toys! After the Super Powers line, GoBots, Transformers, and Voltron are highlighted! The relatively new Sectaurs line gets a whole page, and both GI Joe and He-Man get double spreads! Return of the Jedi gets a page, and M.A.S.K. Shares a page with Wheeled Warriors!Subsequently, Barbies, stuffies, TVs, and cameras get entire sections devoted to them.Dual cassette decks? Check. Oversized fleece terry pullovers? Got ‘em. Masters of the Universe soft and snuggly slippers? Definitely! So grab your Omagles, pick up your pool cue, and scour through this episode on the 1985 Sears Wish Book!Horror Movie BBQFB: @HorrorMovieBBQTwitter: @HorrorMovieBBQIG: @horrormoviebbqAfter LunchGive us a buzz! This week on the Toy Power Podcast; we have another segment of The Team! This round pitting not one; not two, but THREE different Villain Sub-Groups against each other in a plight to crown the perfect Character that lines up with the A-Team Format. BUT, there are some ground rules! We must pick ensure a Villain is represented from each sub-group! Who are these Sub-groups you ask?!? Well its the Thundercats, Silverhawks & TigerSharks - representing Land, Air & Sea respectively. A really fun discussion that has some quite diverse choices indeed!! Then we pivot across to another Galaxy, Far, Far Away. Andor Season 2 has wrapped, & we have a fairly healthy discussion about what made this series so enjoyable. Today I wrap up my three-part series on the appeal of one of my favorite pop-culture properties: G.I. Joe. Previously, I have taken a look at both the action figures and the comic books and today I look at the multiple cartoon series that have featured G.I. Joe since the mid-1980s including the favorably remembered Sunbow series and the less favorably remembered DIC series, plus more!

I usually try to restrain myself from pointing out all the pop culture references in episodes of This Gun in My Hand, because if you don't recognize the reference in the first place, it's not going to become funny when it's pointed out. But just to give a sense of the volume, here are all the allusions or subjects of parody in this episode: Buck Rogers, Mister Rogers' Neighborhood, Moonraker, Batman, Godfather II, Agatha Christie, Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy, Hill Street Blues, Twin Peaks, Barney Miller, Green Hornet, Buckaroo Banzai, Defenders of the Earth, GI Joe, the Secretary of “Health and Human Services” (sic), and that guy who capitalized on his inherited generational wealth and suckered people into believing he's a genius (sorry, that doesn't narrow it down, does it?).Credits:The opening music clip was from The Sun Sets at Dawn (1950). The “Spoilers” commercial music was from The Scar (aka Hollow Triumph, 1948). Closing music was from Killer Bait (1949). All three films are in the public domain.
