"Crying The Neck" With seven marvelous albums under his musical belt, including 2003's Lycanthropy, 2005's Wind In The Wires and his latest album Crying The Neck, which broke a nearly fifteen-year hiatus from recorded music, Patrick Wolf is a wondrous talent. The London-born musician is one of the most arresting artists on the planet--his songs effortlessly meld trip-hop, electronica and indie rock into some of the most compelling, dramatic and altogether moving compositions you're likely to hear. Wolf's music is literary, emotionally precise and sonically arresting. I know a lot of people say his music is baroque and that's not too far off the mark, but an easier way to think of it is Tricky by way of Scott Walker. A multi-instrumentalist, a model, a producer, a playwright a label owner, a poet, and a student at Trinity College, Wolff has played with Arcade Fire, Patti Smith and The Hidden Cameras. He's the recipient of The Edmund Burke Medal from Trinity College Historical Society, Dublin for his Outstanding Contribution to Discourse through the Arts and he's on tour this summer. www.patrickwolf.com www.bombshellradio.com (http://www.bombshellradio.com) www.stereoembersmagazine.com (http://www.stereoembersmagazine.com) www.alexgreenbooks.com (http://www.alexgreenbooks.com) Stereo Embers: IG + THREADS + BLUESKY: @emberspodcast Email: editor@stereoembersmagazine.com

What is de-extinction? The process of de-extinction is all about bringing extinct species back to life. It became known in the 2010s, thanks to an ambitious plan from American geneticist George Church, who dreamed of resurrecting the woolly mammoth, an animal which has been extinct for 3700 years. Fast forward to the 2020s and Church's bioscience startup Colossal is now eding closer towards making that a reality. As of March 2022, Colossal announced that it had raised a total of $75M for the project. Is it really possible to revive extinct animal species? Why would we want to bring extinct species back to life? How is the idea of de-extinction being received by the scientific community? In under 3 minutes, we answer your questions! Robert meets legendary photographer ANTON CORBIJN to discuss his major retrospective opening this weekend in Berlin at Fotografiska museum. The story of Anton Corbijn begins in the quiet corners of a small Dutch island, where he grew up as the son of a vicar. For a young Corbijn, music was an escape, a passion that consumed him. His camera soon became both a tool and a companion, a way to channel his fascination with music and, perhaps more importantly, a means to navigate his own shyness. When Corbijn moved to London in 1979, the city was electric with the energy of bands like The Clash, The Jam, and Joy Division. Within ten days of arriving in England, he managed to photograph Joy Division claiming he was on assignment for a major Dutch magazine, even though he hadn't been officially commissioned. Now, having celebrated his 70th birthday last year, Corbijn looks back on over five decades of work that spans photography, music videos, and film. Corbijn, Anton celebrates his 50-year career and revisits his extensive body of work. Here, you will encounter nearly 150 pieces: iconic portraits of legends like Depeche Mode, Tom Waits, U2, the Rolling Stones, Martin Scorsese, and Marlene Dumas, as well as German icons Nina Hagen, Herbert Grönemeyer, Einstürzende Neubauten and Wim Wenders. His signature black-and-white grainy aesthetic became a defining visual language in his work.A polymath in photography, music videos, feature films, graphic design, and commercials, Dutchman Anton Corbijn is perhaps best known for immortalizing some of the greatest artists of our time. His iconic portraits of musicians, directors, and artists, such as Joy Division, Depeche Mode, Tom Waits, U2, the Rolling Stones, Martin Scorsese, Clint Eastwood, Gerhard Richter, Ai Weiwei, Marlene Dumas among others, are praised for the way they capture the soul and charisma of his subjects.Effortlessly moving in the early 80s from photography into music videos, Corbijn has since made over 80 promos for people like U2, Johnny Cash, Arcade Fire, Depeche Mode, Nirvana, Metallica, Nick Cave, Coldplay, and The Killers. He is the Artistic Director behind the visual output of Depeche Mode. For U2 he has done the principal promotion and sleeve photography for four decades. In 2006 Corbijn started working on his first feature film Control about the life, and death, of Ian Curtis, Joy Division's lead singer. The film won many awards worldwide, including 5 BIFAs and the Camera d'Or Special Mention at Cannes Film Festival 2007. Corbijn has since made The American starring George Clooney (2010), A Most Wanted Man, based on the novel by John Le Carré and featuring the late Philip Seymour Hoffman (2014), and Life, about James Dean and photographer Dennis Stock, which stars Robert Pattinson and Dane DeHaan (2015).In 2023, Corbijn released his first feature documentary Squaring The Circle about the iconic album art design studio Hipgnosis. In 2025, he directed his fifth feature film titled Switzerland starring Helen Mirren.Follow: @AntonCorbijn4RealVisit the exhibition: @Fotografiska.Berlin Hosted on Acast. DL works through the Rolling Stone 500 Greatest Albums of All Time list, reviewing four albums and four songs from entries #477–481 — and handing out scores along the way.Albums covered: Miranda Lambert's The Weight of These Wings (2016) gets an 8.7/10 — a genuine surprise, with DL arguing it's more Orville Peck than generic Nashville country. Selena's Amor Prohibido (1994) gets a 7/10, with praise for Los Dinos and the vocal performances but honest limits on Tejano expertise. Something Else by The Kinks (1967) gets a thoughtful take on a band that was the real rock stars of the '60s — even when they were chasing the Beatles. Howlin' Wolf's Moanin' in the Moonlight earns a 10/10 and a full Delta Blues sermon, with a side argument that it deserves to be ranked way higher than #487.Songs covered: "Just a Friend" by Biz Markie, "Oye Como Va" by Santana, "Back That Azz Up" by Juvenile, and "Our Lips Are Sealed" by the Go-Gos.Plus: the Radiohead solo episode series explained, listener questions on which Radiohead album to give Evil and Rachel as a gateway, and DL's current ranking with Howlin' Wolf sitting at #2 behind Arcade Fire's Funeral.Part of Verse Chorus Verse's ongoing Rolling Stone 500 album-by-album coverage.Rolling Stone 500,Miranda Lambert,Howlin Wolf,The Kinks,Selena,Biz Markie,Santana, album review,Delta Blues, country music, music podcast,Radiohead

We hit play on Arcade Fire's 2017 dance-rock album and let it wash over us: drum-machine pulse, glossy synths, hot horns, and that extra spark from Thomas Bangalter of Daft Punk in the production mix. It's a record that people love, hate, or love to hate, so we slow down and actually talk through what it's doing and why it still feels uncomfortably current. We get into the album's big themes: hyper-consumerism, attention overload, and the weird feeling that every song and every ad is happening at the same time. From the title track's maximalist message to Infinite Content's not-so-funny mirror of subscription life, we connect the lyrics to the daily reality of screens, scrolling, and the urge to fill every empty moment. We also dig into the darker corners, like Creature Comfort's take on fame and self-image, and Peter Pan's fear-of-growing-up energy that ends up becoming our shared favorite deep cut. Then we make it a game: we call the singles the “hits” and rank the best non-hits at the end. You Forgot It in People captures Broken Social Scene at their most expansive, an indie rock communal experience balancing meticulous arrangements and unhinged joyfulness. Layers of guitars, synths, horns, and rotating vocalists creates a warm chaos that rewards repeated listens, as new details constantly surface. Songs like “Anthems for a Seventeen Year-Old Girl” and “Cause = Time” balance intimacy and grandeur, pairing fragile emotion with sweeping crescendos. Two decades on, it still sounds like the 2000s blueprint for how indie rock bands like Arcade Fire, Godspeed, You Black Emperor, and many more could be messy, emotional, and deeply human without losing their ambition.   Songs In This Episode Intro - Stars and Sons 12:15 - KC Accidental 20:29 - Cause = Time 26:03 - Anthems For A Seventeen Year-Old Girl Outro - Pacific Theme   Support the podcast, join the DMO UNION at Patreon. In this episode, Kenneth Lonergan moderates a conversation about Stereophonic, David Adjmi's Tony Award-winning play. Set in mid-1970s Sausalito, the story takes us inside a recording studio where a rock band on the brink of superstardom struggles to create their sophomore album. Fueled by booze, sleep deprivation, and a giant bag of cocaine, the band's relationships are pushed to the breaking point as a process meant to last weeks stretches indefinitely. With original songs by Arcade Fire's Will Butler, Adjmi's epic play offers an electrifying portrait of creative tension, division, and the pursuit of a masterpiece. David Adjmi's other works include Stunning, Marie Antoinette, 3C, Elective Affinities, and The Evildoers. He is a Guggenheim Fellow, Whiting Writers' Award recipient, and Steinberg Playwright Award winner, and his memoir Lot Six was published by HarperCollins. Kenneth Lonergan, celebrated as a playwright and filmmaker, co-wrote Gangs of New York and wrote and directed You Can Count on Me, Margaret, and Manchester by the Sea, for which he won the Academy Award and BAFTA for Best Original Screenplay. Lonergan's best-known plays include This Is Our Youth, Lobby Hero, and The Waverly Gallery. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices

In this episode of Money Tales, our guest is David Adjmi. From childhood, our money stories shape the way we see the world—sometimes with clarity, and sometimes with confusion. For playwright David, growing up in a family and a neighborhood where money was about hustle, performance, and status left him questioning what financial security and self-worth really meant. David Adjmi's plays have been produced at theatres around the world such as Lincoln Center, RSC, Steppenwolf, and Soho Rep--where he was the Mellon Foundation playwright-in-residence for three years. Stereophonic (music by Will Butler of Arcade Fire) is running on London's West End after a successful run on Broadway, where it became the most Tony-nominated play in history. Stereophonic received the 2024 Drama Desk Award, New York Drama Critics' Circle Award, Outer Critics Circle Award, Drama League, and Tony Awards for Best Play. The Stumble was recently excerpted in The Paris Review, and his two-part play The Blind King is currently in development with The Public. Adjmi's controversial hit 3C was selected as one of the top ten plays of the year by the New York Post, Time Out and the Advocate. Elective Affinities premiered at the Royal Shakespeare Company and received a sold-out U.S. premiere at Soho Rep starring Zoe Caldwell (Top 10 of the year in Time Out, The New Yorker.) Other plays include Stunning, The Evildoers, and Marie Antoinette. He was awarded a Guggenheim Fellowship, the Whiting Writers' Award, the Kesselring Prize for Drama, and the Steinberg Playwright Award, among others.  He holds commissions from The Public, Playwrights Horizons, Yale Rep, Berkeley Rep, and the Royal Court (UK). His critically acclaimed memoir Lot Six was published by HarperCollins in 2020, and his collected plays are published by TCG.

When Marika Anthony-Shaw was touring with Arcade Fire, the band started adding a single dollar to every concert ticket—sending the proceeds to Partners in Health's work in Haiti. Night after night, that simple gesture grew from $3,000 to $10,000 per show. Over nine years, they contributed more than $2.5 million without asking anyone for money. The question became: Why isn't everybody doing this? That question launched PLUS1, an organization that's now embedded philanthropy into the architecture of live events. Today, Marika leads a movement that has raised over $32 million for more than a thousand nonprofits—not by disrupting the concert experience, but by making generosity a seamless part of it. As she puts it:Join us as Marika shares how PLUS1 is changing the way an entire industry thinks about giving—and how every dollar invested in their model unlocks $21 in grants to communities that need it most. It's Marika Anthony-Shaw on The Business of Giving.

The definitive history of twenty-first-century indie rock-from Iron & Wine and Death Cab for Cutie to Phoebe Bridgers and St. Vincent-and how the genre shifted the musical landscape and shaped a generationMaybe you caught a few exhilarating seconds of "Teen Age Riot" on a nearby college radio station while scanning the FM dial in your parents' car. Maybe your friend invited you to a shabby local rock club and you ended up having a religious experience with Neutral Milk Hotel. Perhaps you were scandalized and tantalized upon sneaking Liz Phair's Exile in Guyville from an older sibling's CD collection, or you vowed to download every Radiohead song you could find on LimeWire because they were the favorite band of the guy you had a major crush on.However you found your way into indie rock, once you were a listener, it felt like being part of a secret club of people who had discovered something special, something secret, something superior. In Such Great Heights, music journalist Chris DeVille brilliantly captures this cultural moment, from the early aughts and the height of indie rock, until the 2010s as streaming upends the industry and changes music forever. DeVille covers the gamut of bands-like Arcade Fire, TV On The Radio, LCD Soundsystem, Haim, Pavement, and Bon Iver-and in the vein of Chuck Klosterman's The Nineties, touches on staggering pop culture moments, like finding your new favorite band on MySpace and the life-changing O.C. soundtrack.Nerdy, fun, and a time machine for millennials, Such Great Heights is about how subculture becomes pop culture, how capitalism consumes what's "cool," who gets to define what's hip and why, and how an "underground" genre shaped our lives.Become a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/arroe-collins-unplugged-totally-uncut--994165/support.

As of March 2022, Colossal announced that it had raised a total of $75M for the project. Is it really possible to revive extinct animal species? Segments: Bless & Release: Lies we tell ourselves GenXcellence: MTV music videos *** Thought-provoking Quotes: “We have created this way of interpreting someone changing their mind as a flip-flopper and we have left no room for someone to grow.” – Kelly Corrigan “Making is good for individual well-being. Having an inventor's or innovator's mindset is just good for society.” – Kelly Corrigan “Once you say something out loud, it just gets smaller. It packs less of a punch.
