In this episode of Mind The Gap, Tom and Emma are joined by Vic Goddard. The group discusses Vic's position in British Education, particularly his role as a leader and a role model for head teachers and school leadership across the UK. Vic's first foray into thought leadership was the BAFTA-nominated documentary series Educating Essex, a seven-part series following a group of GCSE students and the staff who teach them. Since then, Vic has continued as a thought leader in British education and provided opportunities for leadership connections. Overall this episode highlights the strengths of bold leadership. In this case, bold does not mean brash or dominative; it means empathetic and caring, and open to different perspectives. Particularly in education, as this conversation shows, boldness in leadership can help students, teachers, and a community thrive. About the participants: Vic Goddard is the Principal of Passmores Academy and star of the BAFTA-nominated Channel 4 documentary Educating Essex. He is a proud South Londoner, having been raised on a council estate, then going on to train as a PE teacher and eventually becoming the nation's best-loved Headmaster thanks to his undeniable dedication to his school and the young people inside it. School is one of the great social levellers – every young person irrespective of who they are has to go. However, the 2020 pandemic revealed two critical things – firstly, just how unequal the schooling system has become and secondly, just how important good schooling is. In the first episode about the modern school system, we get under the skin of these issues, talking to teenagers about what it's really like to attend a failing school and the impact this has had on their future. We also examine what role school has in the lives of teenagers, and one of the most devastating teenage paradoxes of all – the fact you rarely see just how valuable school is until you leave the safety and structure of the four walls of school! We also talk to beloved and eminent headteacher of Passmores Academy, Vic Goddard, who is best known for his brilliant leadership but also from the hit TV show, Educating Essex. He chats to us about inequality, poverty, the challenges of modern teaching and schools, and why he is ultimately very hopeful about modern teenagers! As a profession, we've become accustomed to seeing school leaders, teachers and pupils becoming unexpected stars of the small screen. Documentaries like Educating Essex and Educating Manchester have proven to be unexpected ratings winners and have given viewers an insight into modern-day schooling along the way. You'll get to hear about one particular school community in London that may just be about to find itself becoming the star of the big screen, as we speak to the makers of a new film, ‘H is for Harry'. H is for Harry is a coming of age story about Harry, a charismatic 11-year old boy who arrives at secondary school in suburban London unable to read or write. With the help of Sophie, his extremely dedicated teacher, and the unfailing support of his father, he struggles to overcome the illiteracy ingrained across generations of his family. James Bowen, Edge Director, has an enlightening conversation with the film's co Directors and the Headteacher of the school where the film was made.

Richard Freeman's special guest this week is Vic Goddard. Vic has been described as ‘the most famous headteacher in the UK', following his decision to work with Channel 4 on the groundbreaking documentary series, ‘Educating Essex'. The BAFTA-winning programme looked under the bonnet of life at Passmores Academy, a modern comprehensive secondary school in Harlow, and the relationships and learning that happens in such a complex ecosystem. Vic's whole life and mission has been in education and it is something about which he is outspoken and unafraid to defend - particularly when the spotlight is bright and the scrutiny intense. Vic's 2014 book ‘The Best Job In The World' is a call to arms for more people to join the teaching profession, especially to aspire to school leadership positions. We spoke in early autumn 2018, about TV, education policy, dealing with having a high profile and what the mission education school be. --- Useful links: Vic Goddard on Amazon - https://www.amazon.co.uk/Best-Job-World-Vic-Goddard/dp/1781351104 On inspiring teachers (The Guardian) - https://www.theguardian.com/education/2014/apr/29/vic-goddard-educating-essex-how-to-guide-heads 'Educating Essex' clips - https://www.channel4.com/programmes/educating-essex/videos/all/mr-goddard-head-teacher-interview/2828742166001 --- Have you checked out all of other interviews? - there are now over 60 past podcasts available on iTunes, Soundcloud are wherever you accessed this one. First came BAFTA winning Educating Yorkshire, then Educating Essex. So why not adapt their documentary skills to filming children, thought production company Twofour That's how the returning CBBC series Our School was born. The first series was set in Conyers School in Teeside. The current series shows life in Greenwood Academy in Castle Vale, Birmingham. Kez Margrie, CBBC's executive producer, says she hopes the series will help make the transition from primary school to “big” school easier. That's not to say that it's all smiles and laughter during the series. Some storylines show some of the children finding the jump to secondary school hard, with one boy, Isaac, having sessions with the school's youth worker, Sean. Executive producer Richard Marson says they thought carefully before deciding what to show from their conversations. And what about having cameras and the production team all over the school? And then having the results shown on television? Performing arts teacher and series narrator Trevor Evans advises the school thought long and hard about all aspects of what doing the series could bring - positive and negative. Our School doesn't just see the children growing up, but also the production team. One of the best things, Richard says, was being able to take some of the team from the first series onto the second, with researchers moving to assistant producer roles and even producing episodes. *This podcast was recorded in a public space and therefore some audio is not to our usual standards.*
