Today’s Topics: 1) Gospel – Matthew 5:13-16 – Jesus said to His disciples: “You are the salt of the earth. But if salt loses its taste, with what can it be seasoned? It is no longer good for anything but to be thrown out and trampled underfoot. You are the light of the world. A city set on a mountain cannot be hidden. Nor do they light a lamp and then put it under a bushel basket; it is set on a lampstand, where it gives light to all in the house. Just so, your light must shine before others, that they may see your good deeds and glorify your heavenly Father.” Memorial of Saint Ephrem, Deacon and Doctor of the Church Saint Ephrem, pray for us! Bishop Sheen quote of the day On 31 January 1906, an earthquake occurred off the southern coast of Columbia, and the Ocean receded about a half mile from the shore at Tumaco. Father Gerardo Larrondo “rushed to the church and took a large consecrated host and a ciborium from the tabernacle to protect it. He quickly went to the people and, raising the Blessed Sacrament, exclaimed: ‘Come, my children, let us all go to the beach, and may God have mercy on us.'” As they watched the approaching tsunami, Father raised the Blessed Sacrament and made a large Sign of the Cross. We are proud to welcome Father Scott Jabo to Episode #102 of The Rambler Podcast! Serving as Headmaster and President of Cathedral Prep and the Erie Catholic Preparatory School Systemfrom 2000–2020, Fr. Jabo played a truly transformational role in shaping the Prep and Villa experience as we know it today. His leadership helped bring Prep and Villa together as co-institutional partners in 2009, led to the founding of Mother Teresa Academy in 2018, and guided the development of the Hagerty Family Events Center through Phase 1 in 2010 and Phase 2 in 2015. He also helped establish a strong financial foundation through the system's endowment, ensuring access to Catholic education for generations to come. But outside ofthat all, Fr. Jabo says in this episode that he is the most proud of the impact Cathedral Prep & Villa Maria Academy has had on young men and women through his years here with the school. In this episode of the podcast, we take a deep dive into Fr. Jabo's leadership journey by reflecting on the early years of leading Cathedral Prep, the opportunity for the corporatemerger with Cathedral Prep & Villa Maria Academy in 2009, the vision behind the Events Center, and the lasting impact of his work across our schools. This is a powerful conversation centered on leadership, faith, and legacy by the manwho helped make it all possible!
Pain stunts can shock anyone. The real question is: how do you turn shock into something people actually want to come back for? I sit down again with Hoverfiel, the Norwegian pioneer behind Pain Solution, to talk about the hard-earned craft of pain-proof performance and why “keeping it real” is more than a slogan. We get into what happens when you refuse illusions, build shows around music cues, and design an act you can carry solo in a gig economy without watering down the material. From there, we dig into the part many sideshow and performance art fans never hear: character work. Hoverfiel explains why relying on puke-and-pass-out reactions is a dead end, and how comedy and tension release can make extreme acts accessible without making them fake. We also talk about pacing, including the deliberate choice to save blood for the end, bringing audiences along a journey where they laugh first, trust the performer, and only then choose how far they want to go. The conversation takes a sharp turn into the Fakir Academy, an unorthodox apprenticeship that starts with a referral from Child Protective Services. We unpack what it meant to mentor young people with self-harm histories, teach technical sideshow skills alongside creativity and structure, and meet self-harm with understanding instead of disgust. It's a nuanced discussion about mental health, harm reduction, and the limits of what a performer can safely carry, even with the best intentions. If you care about sideshow history, fakir tradition, body modification culture, or the ethics of performance under real risk, you'll find a lot to sit with here. The panel digs into the G2 Dreadwing and Smokejumper Japan exclusive, the UK Marvel Legacy of Unicron storyline, the Headmasters finale two-parter and the consultant who killed Ultra Magnus, and the first recorded fandom use of the term "G1." On the comics side, the IDW license expiration gets its first airing and the Target: 2006 trade paperback sparks a discussion of how the UK Marvel comic kept the story moving between US issues. Toy releases covered include the Downtown comedy duo Cerebros set, the Encore Devastator anime color version, and a full slate of Takara Tomy January 2013 releases. Fire looks clean from a distance. Up close, it can leave you chronically ill for life. We're joined by Håvve Fjell, known to many as the Headmaster of Pain and the driving force behind Norway's legendary Pain Solution, for a frank talk about what extreme performance really demands and what it can take from you.We start with the unromantic reality of occupational risk: lung damage from long-term fire eating and fire breathing, early accidents, and the quiet ways the body keeps score. From there, we rewind to the beginning, when pain isn't a stunt but a fascination. Hover shares how childhood injuries turn into deliberate experiments as a teenager, and why his motivation doesn't match the usual story people tell about self-harm. That thread leads straight into Modern Primitives, Fakir Musafar, body modification, altered states, and the moment a private impulse becomes a serious practice. Then we get practical about craft. A failed early debut, heckling, and a confused audience push Hover toward learning performance skills: juggling, acting, clowning, mime, and the hard work of building a stage persona. We also revisit a pre-internet body piercing scene in Norway where information is scarce, standards are improvised, and word of mouth is everything. Finally, we dig into the origins of Pain Solution itself, from backyard fire sessions to booked gigs, naming the act, documenting the work in books, and the long road from ritual performance art toward a sideshow format people can actually book.If you're into sideshow history, fakir performance, fire breathing safety, body modification culture, or performance art, this is a rare firsthand map of how the scene was built. The Education Review Office has said schools need to get tougher on enforcing phone bans. Research found that only 50% of students are following the rules, a number it says is not good enough. Mount Albert Grammar Headmaster Patrick Drumm told Mike Hosking that the study needs to be unpacked further, as it's likely that students are using their phones outside of lessons instead of in a learning environment. He said that it's been a 'successful initiative' so far, but says it's an ongoing process to reduce numbers further. LISTEN ABOVESee omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

What should schools really be teaching the next generation? In this episode, Spencer sits down with Tomas Duckling, Headmaster of one of the most prestigious schools in the UAE, to explore the pressures shaping modern education, the role of parents in an increasingly competitive system, the impact of technology and AI on learning and why the future of education must focus on building good humans, not just high achievers. Tomas' path into education was unexpected. After travelling the world in his early twenties, he began working at a North London school supporting refugees and immigrant communities. What started as a temporary role quickly became a calling, launching an international career that took him from Brunei to Aiglon College in Switzerland, one of the world's most expensive schools. Now leading Dubai College, Tomas believes schools should focus on far more than exam results. His mission is to develop character, empathy, kindness, and leadership, preparing students not just for academic success but to become good humans who can make a meaningful impact on the world. Richard Herring became half of a decade-defining comedy act with Stewart Lee – thanks to a chance meeting in an Oxford cricket pavilion which was the genesis of a 13-year creative partnership which included the cult classic Fist of Fun and the legendary Edinburgh Fringe show ‘This Morning with Richard not Judy' Another important pairing came along in 2008 when he teamed up with the NME journalist and then 6Music presenter Andrew Collins for a new show – but not on the radio or the television – to the dismay of many of their peers they would chat for an hour or so giving away material for free on a ‘podcast'. It's a genre that Richard had helped define. From his decision to host his shows in front of paying audiences (long before podcasts were profitable!) Richard Herring's Leicester Square Theatre Podcast – of RHLSTP to those in the know recently put out its 600th episode, that's in addition to the multiple spin-offs which help contribute to over a million downloads per month. As a comedian he's been described as “One of the leading hidden masters of modern British comedy” – that's despite deciding in the early 90s that he wasn't very good at solo stand-up. In fact he describes his first attempts as “largely humiliating and unsatisfying.” A decade on from his early set-backs he toured shows like Talking Cock, Hitler Moustache, Someone Likes Yoghurt and Talking Cock: The Second Coming. In his show The Headmaster's Son he focussed on life as the son of the Headmaster – dedicated to his Dad – very much his origin story as a comedian. Like many in comedy lockdown forced all of his content online – but Richard suffered a second setback when in 2021 he was diagnosed with testicular cancer. He wrote about it in his typically dark-humoured book ‘Can I Have My Ball Back?', where he explored how his diagnosis and subsequent treatment forced him to reflect on his own mortality and masculinity. With almost 500 episodes of White Wine Question Time, and 600 episode of Richard Herring's Leicester Square Theatre Podcast I wonder if this might be the most ‘capped' interview on the internet?Cheers! Luke is back on the podcast joining Matt and Dawn to review four more shows available this week. Beginning with A Woman of Substance, Channel 4's new take on one of their first dramas which aired in the 80s. This new adpatation seems out of place on Channel 4 but also in 2026 where it feels like it has nothing new to say. Next, ITV have a new six-part thriller starring David Morrisery as the Headmaster of a private school who finds himself under the spotlight when his wife disappears. Gone, written by Hijack's George Kay, is an odd beast. Next, its another week for another comedy from Ted Lasso and Shrinking creator Bill Lawrence. Following on from last week's Scrubs reboot, Lawrence brings us Rooster, a Sky One comedy that sees Steve Carel's unfurfilled novelist end up on his daughters' college campus when she falls on hard times. Lastly, the strange romance thriller Vladimir from Netflix. Finally, Matt challenges Luke and Dawn to name as many of Channel 4's Celebrity Big Brother contestants they can to win their quiz.
Susan Hassall arrived at Hamilton Boys' High School in 1979 as a 22-year-old English teacher. She stayed for 46 years. Father Nathan Carr, Headmaster of The Academy and often dubbed “the Jack Sparrow of classical education,” joins Christopher Perrin to recount his unexpected path into classical Christian school leadership—and the hard-won lessons of building a flourishing school culture over two decades. Their conversation draws on James K. A. Smith's Desiring the Kingdom to argue that “liturgies” (in church and in culture) quietly train our loves and longings. Carr connects that insight to his own work, The Festive School, where he explores how a school's calendar, habits, and celebrations can become formative—not merely decorative. He also points listeners to his Student Prayer Book as a practical companion for cultivating daily, embodied prayer in the life of a classroom. From The Book of Common Prayer and the daily offices to monastic rhythms like Matins and Compline, he frames education as formation through repeated, prayerful practice. Along the way, they address objections to “rote” ritual, suggesting that repetition can become spiritually alive and deeply consoling over time. The episode closes with concrete snapshots of festivity at The Academy: Lessons & Carols, Stations of the Cross, and campus-wide celebrations of Incarnation and Resurrection. Father Nathan Carr also has a forthcoming course on ClassicalU.com that will release in the early Spring of 2026.
I'm honored to welcome a remarkable educator, communal builder, and gifted storyteller: Solly Kaplinski. Solly's journey stretches across continents, communities, and generations. He began his career as Headmaster of Herzlia High School in Cape Town, later leading Jewish day schools in Toronto and Vancouver — shaping thousands of students and leaving a lasting imprint on Jewish education. More than 25 years ago, he made Aliyah, where his professional path formed an extraordinary arc, touched by two institutions that sit at the very heart of the Jewish story. At Yad Vashem, working in the International Relations Department, Solly helped carry the weight of memory and meaning on behalf of Jewish communities around the world. And at the American Jewish Joint Distribution Committee (JDC), he spent 17 years as Executive Director of Overseas Joint Ventures — building partnerships, strengthening Jewish life across continents, and nurturing connections that continue to echo today. Solly is also a writer. His novella A World of Pains: A Redemptive Parable? and his two moving volumes on donors and fundraisers — all available as free downloads at journeysintothegentleheart.com — reveal yet another dimension of his commitment to Jewish story, memory, and heart. Solly lives in Jerusalem with his wife, Arleen. Their three daughters — along with their spouses and what he lovingly calls an “egalitarian minyan” of grandchildren — all make their homes in Israel. It is truly a privilege to sit with someone whose life has been dedicated to education, service, remembrance, and the quiet, powerful work of building community. Solly Kaplinski — welcome to the show. ——

A survey of more than 30,000 of New Zealand's Year 10 students shows that the number of teens who vape regularly has dropped by half since it's peak in 2021. The number of teenagers who vape on a daily basis has also dropped from “peak vape” of 10.1% in 2022, to 7.1%. Auckland Grammar headmaster Tim O'Connor says he has noticed the shift but doesn't know what it can be attributed to. "I don't know what's going on to tell you the truth. I don't know whether it's us being more effective, or the messages happening, or if it's just random," he told Heather du Plessis-Allan. In this episode of Critical Magic Theory, Professor Julian Wamble revisits Albus Dumbledore through a very different lens: not as the wise, whimsical Headmaster we grew up with, but as a leader whose incomplete understanding of power shaped an entire generation of Hogwarts students. Drawing on your survey responses about whether Dumbledore is a hero, a good leader of the Order of the Phoenix, or a “good half-blood,” Julian explores the moment when Tom Riddle returns to Hogwarts — a scene that reveals how Voldemort sees Dumbledore more clearly than Dumbledore sees himself. We examine why Dumbledore claims he “cannot be trusted with power,” while failing to recognize the influence he wields as Headmaster; why Hogwarts becomes the site where children, not adults, carry the heaviest burdens of the war; and how Dumbledore's belief that teaching is a “safe” or “lesser” form of authority leads to dangerous decisions with lasting consequences. This episode challenges the myth of the powerless educator and asks: What happens when a leader refuses to believe the hype everyone else believes about him?
In the first installment of our Albus Dumbledore series, Critical Magic Theory host Professor Julian Wamble unpacks the contradictions that define Albus Dumbledore—the most beloved and baffling figure in the Harry Potter universe. Is he truly a wise protector of Hogwarts, or a master manipulator whose brilliance excuses too much? Does being “for the greater good” make him noble, or merely dangerous in more elegant ways? We also ask whether Dumbledore embodies what it means to be a “good Gryffindor,” when courage so often borders on recklessness, and whether his leadership as Headmaster reflects moral strength or moral blindness.Drawing on listener surveys, we explore Dumbledore's manipulation, his mythology, and the uneasy parallels between him and Voldemort—two men shaped by power and haunted by restraint. In tracing how Dumbledore curates his own legend while hiding his flaws, we uncover how faith, myth, and morality intertwine in the wizarding world, and what it means to believe in someone after the evidence runs out. This episode of Critical Magic Theory invites us to see Dumbledore not just as the greatest wizard of his age, but as a mirror for our own longing to trust brilliance, even when we know it can break us.

“Be perfect” (Matt. 5:48) and “anxious for nothing” (Phil 4:6). This tall order from the New Testament may put modern parents into a cold sweat. Parental perfectionism and anxiety are surely on the rise, but in his annual Headmaster's Lecture at The Heights School, Alvaro de Vicente talks us down.
