The concept of universities engaging with communities and organisations beyond their walls, is a recurring theme throughout this podcast series. Indeed, it was the submission by the distinguished American scholar, Ernest Boyer a quarter of a century ago, that universities should become much more vigorous partners in the search for answers to the most pressing social problems of the day, that was one of the central motivations for us launching this endeavour in the first place.  To date in the series, our primary focus has been on the nature and significance of some of these most critical social, economic, and ecological issues that include climate change and the COVID-19 pandemic. To date we have placed less emphasis on the actual practicalities of the engagement process. How do individual and groups of academics actively engage with members of the public in mutually beneficial ways? How do universities as formal institutions go about developing partnerships with the communities of their region as well as with other public organisations in both the public and private sectors? In this episode we turn our attention to exploring an actual example of how this university, of the Sunshine Coast, is engaging with a wide range of community groups, commercial businesses, and other organisations and institutions. In this instance, the initiative is a specific and vital quest to contribute to the reduction in the number of suicide attempts and completions up here on the Sunshine Coast of Queensland. Richard's guest today is Mervat Quirke who is the Manager of Strategic Partnerships/Community Engagement and Development at the Thompson Institute at the University of the Sunshine Coast which is a world-class hub for research, teaching, and clinical services for Australia's most pressing mental health issues.

Emergent scholarship has seen significant engagement since Ernest Boyer’s call for expanding the domain of scholarship, but the support of this scholarship in formal education spaces has not kept up with rate of adoption. ABOUT JON BECKER Jon Becker is an Associate Professor of Educational Leadership at Virginia Commonwealth University. Our discussion focused on five main themes coming out of Martin’s work and how they relate to Ernest Boyer’s four domains of scholarship, as well as the manner in which education metaphors move educational conversation and policy for better and for worse. ABOUT MARTIN WELLER Martin Weller is Professor of Educational Technology at the Open University. He chaired the OU’s first major elearning course in 1999 with 15,000 students and has led many of the strategic technology developments at the University, including being the first VLE Director. He is currently the Director of the OER Hub research team, which examines the impact of open educational practices. James Loxley, University of Edinburgh, gives the final keynote in the DHOXSS 2015. The creation of the discipline - if that's what it is - of the digital humanities has gone hand in hand with the ever more pervasive pertinence for humanities academics of a 'digital scholarship' conceived more generally. Scholarship, in Ernest Boyer's influential terms, consists of the different intellectual activities of discovery, integration, application and teaching; each of these activities has been, and is still, undergoing change as a result of the wider intellectual transformations wrought by digital technologies. But scholarly understanding of the nature of such change rests on a variety of differing assumptions - is this, for example, augmentation, development, or metamorphosis? The difference between such assumptions can readily shape the way in which we react to the challenge posed by the attraction, and encroachment, of digital approaches. Some have been moved to ask: can we ignore or resist them? What will become of our disciplines if we can't, or don't? This lecture will explore some possible responses to these concerns through a series of examples drawn, largely, from my own experience as an originally analogue scholar who has been a long time in the process of becoming digital.
