Send us a textWe take listeners along on our bourbon hunting adventure in Chicago, revealing how the Windy City's whiskey scene differs dramatically from our experiences in Ohio and South Carolina.• Discovering the density of Chicago's liquor stores – passing 13 stores on one drive to Wrigleyville• Scoring Weller 12 for $50 at Woodman's during a massive 17-case drop• Finding allocated bottles readily available at reasonable prices across the city• Exploring Binny's flagship store, the third-largest liquor store in America• Enjoying a $50 Pappy flight at Binny's tasting bar with generous 2oz pours• Visiting Koval Distillery and sampling their unique wheat whiskey• Meeting with Martin Duffy and experiencing rare scotches at Green Post Restaurant• Ending our adventure at Delilah's bar with a pour of 2018 George T Stagg• Forming new friendships through bourbon, including late-night tastings of Eagle Rare 17Remember to check out our upcoming barrel pick in September and stay tuned for more details on our Crystal Glencairn Club. When six bourbon enthusiasts descend upon Chicago with rental cars and empty suitcases, magic happens. Our weekend adventure through the Windy City revealed a bourbon hunting paradise unlike anything we'd experienced in our home territories.Chicago's whiskey landscape stands in stark contrast to the controlled distribution systems of states like Ohio. Where allocated bottles might drop statewide back home, Chicago's liquor stores operate as independent whiskey islands, each with their own treasures waiting to be discovered. On a single drive from our hotel to Wrigleyville for a Cubs game, we counted thirteen different liquor stores – each offering unique selections at surprisingly reasonable prices. The highlight came at Woodman's, where we stumbled upon a freshly delivered 17-case drop of Weller 12 priced at just under $50 after tax. To put this in perspective, the same store had simultaneously received Weller Full Proof, 1792 Cognac finish, and Buffalo Trace's "Tater Salad" bottles (EH Taylor Small Batch). At Binny's flagship store – the third-largest liquor retailer in America – we indulged in a $50 flight featuring Old Rip Van Winkle 10, Van Winkle Special Reserve 12, and Van Winkle Family Reserve Rye, each poured as generous 2oz servings.Beyond retail therapy, we explored Koval Distillery's innovative grain experiments, savored rare scotches pulled from the vault at Green Post Restaurant alongside Martin Duffy, and capped our nights with pours of George T. Stagg 2018 at the legendary Delilah's bar. Most precious of all were the friendships formed along the way – from chance encounters in bottle release lines to fireside tastings of Eagle Rare 17 that stretched into the early morning hours.Whether you're a seasoned bourbon hunter or simply curious about exploring whiskey culture beyond the traditional Kentucky trail, Chicago offers an unexpectedly rich playground for whiskey lovers. Mt. Iliamna is an active cone-shaped volcano located one hundred and forty miles (225 km) southwest of Anchorage and seventy miles (113 km) northwest of Homer. It is part of the Chigmit Mountains and rises from its base near Cook Inlet to 10,016 feet (3052.9 m), one of the highest peaks in the volcanically active area of the Alaska Peninsula. Ten glaciers radiate from the volcano's slopes. Iliamna last erupted in 1867, and observers have occasionally seen smoke wafting from the summit since then. However, it is the weather surrounding the mountain, not the volcanic activity, that makes Iliamna dangerous. Clouds frequently cloak the mountain's peak, and turbulent winds buffet this mountainous region, creating some of the most hazardous weather on the planet. Coastal fog and rain often create restricted visibility and a low ceiling. For aviators, flying in this area of the state can be challenging, dangerous, and sometimes deadly. Between 1958 and 1977, four mid-sized planes either crashed into Mt. Iliamna or were destroyed by the turbulence near the mountain, killing a total of seventy-nine people. Taste the Blood of Dracula (1970). We're back to Hammer Horror, back to Christopher Lee, and back to Dracula. In this episode of General Witchfinders, we sink our teeth into Taste the Blood of Dracula (1970), the fifth official film in Hammer's Dracula series and our sixth Hammer Dracula review to date. You can find links to all previous vampire escapades at https://tinyurl.com/Witchdrac. This British gothic horror classic, directed by Peter Sasdy and written by Hammer regular Anthony Hinds (under the alias John Elder), was nearly a Dracula-free affair. Christopher Lee had originally declined to return, and the script focused instead on Ralph Bates's doomed Lord Courtley. But Warner Bros. insisted: no Dracula, no deal. So #BigChrisLee once again rises from the grave — bloodthirsty, silent, and furiously regretting his contract. Taste the Blood of Dracula opens with a satanic ritual involving Dracula's powdered remains, a trio of Victorian hypocrites, and the ill-fated resurrection of evil. It's a moody, blood-soaked revenge tale packed with brooding graveyards and Hammer's trademark blend of sex, sin and satin capes. Cast Highlights:Christopher Lee as Count Dracula — in his fourth Dracula outing for Hammer.Ralph Bates as Lord Courtley — Hammer's would-be replacement for Lee.Geoffrey Keen as William Hargood — a patriarch with a hidden penchant for brothels.Linda Hayden as Alice Hargood — the daughter turned devotee, previously seen in Baby Love and The Blood on Satan's Claw.Peter Sallis as Samuel Paxton — yes, that Peter Sallis: Cleggy, Wallace, and voice of animated British melancholy.Roy Kinnear as Weller — bringing tragic optimism, as only Kinnear can. There's Hammer horror royalty in every frame, from Linda Hayden's eerie innocence to Ralph Bates's foppish devilry. And Geoffrey Keen? You may recognise him as Sir Frederick Gray, the Defence Minister across six Bond films — The Spy Who Loved Me, Moonraker, For Your Eyes Only, Octopussy, A View to a Kill and The Living Daylights. Ralph Bates, meanwhile, would go on to star in Dr Jekyll and Sister Hyde, The Horror of Frankenstein, Lust for a Vampire, becoming one of Hammer's key players. He also turned up in the final season of Secret Army (inspiring 'Allo 'Allo), and was once considered for major roles in Lifeforce — as discussed back in episode 39.Peter Sallis, who we last touched on in our Nicolas Lyndhurst deep-dive (episode 54), had an extraordinary career in British television, from Doctor Who to The Wind in the Willows to Wallace & Gromit. His role in this film might be brief, but his CV is longer than Dracula's cape. And finally, Roy Kinnear: from Willy Wonka & the Chocolate Factory to Help!, Watership Down, Blake's 7, and beyond — always brilliant, always beleaguered. Trivia for the diehards:This film was part of a double bill with Crescendo on release. The infamous brothel scene was trimmed from the theatrical cut but restored for later DVD editions.Released just 22 weeks before Scars of Dracula (covered back in episode 28). Whether you're a lifelong Hammer horror collector, a Christopher Lee completist, or simply a fan of vintage British horror with gothic flair, Taste the Blood of Dracula is essential viewing.Support this show http://supporter.acast.com/general-witchfinders. As the third oldest operating distillery in the world, with roots dating back to 1773, Buffalo Trace Distillery (as it's known today) has been honing its craft since Kentucky was a wild, untamed frontier and the United States was just an idea. In the centuries that followed, the Distillery changed hands numerous times, but one thing always remained constant; it was a homeplace for the creation of authentic American whiskey. At the turn of the millennium, the Distillery was amid a period of transformation once again and looked to its forebearers for inspiration. As a trailblazer in the industry, the distillation team chose to pay homage to W.L. Weller by setting aside some of the first whiskeys distilled in the new millennium for the sole purpose of creating this extraordinary innovation.A blend of vintage straight bourbon and wheat whiskeys distilled in 2000, 2003, 2005 and 2006, Weller Millennium highlights the impact that wheat has on the whiskey's flavor: the softness imparted by the wheat creates a smoother, sweeter, more approachable expression. By marrying these exceptional spirits together, the whiskeys further harmonize with each other, creating a cohesive, balanced final product that is greater than the sum of its parts.
Welcome to episode #22 featuring an exceptional track list. I've got a new feature I'm trying out, tracing the roots of current mod bands and bands obviously heavily influenced by mod music. So for this episode I've got The Who, The Jam & Green Day. [Originally aired August 2007 on Mistersuave.com] To set the scene here's a passage from Mr. Suave's First Epistle to the Mods.Chapter 1 Verse 1: In the beginning was The Who and the mods knew it was good. It was loud and brash and full of danceable rhythm. Verse 2: The Who begat the Jam and the punks and mods knew it was good. It was fast and it was soulful. Verse 3: The Jam begat Green Day. And the punks and the mods and the masses finally all opened their ears and knew it was good. It was loud, and brash, and fast. And ultimately they showered it with silver and gold. Remember to like, subscribe, comment, and leave good feedback!A reunion fifteen years in the making—well, at least it feels that way. When Whiskey returns to the Scotchy Bourbon Boys studio, the atmosphere crackles with the familiar energy that made their "10-minute tastings" (that routinely stretched to 30) so beloved by listeners.Tonight's star attraction isn't just the reunion, but a bottle that commands hushed reverence in bourbon circles: William Heaven Hill 15-Year, the ninth edition of Heaven Hill's limited release masterpiece. Composed of merely 34 barrels pulled from the fourth floor of Rick House LL at Shenley and bottled at a perfect 109 proof, this isn't just another premium bourbon—it's a time capsule of exceptional craftsmanship. The hosts dive deep into what makes this expression special, parsing through its complex nose of brown sugar, subtle cherry, and vanilla bean notes. While many 15-year bourbons fall victim to over-oaking, this one strikes a perfect harmony—delivering rich flavor without the woodiness that can overwhelm aged spirits. The mouthfeel earns particular praise for coating every corner of the palate despite not being barrel proof. What follows is a masterclass in bourbon appreciation as they meticulously evaluate each aspect through their Old Louisville Whiskey Company Barrel Bottle Breakdown scale. The verdict? An astonishing 18.5 out of 19 possible points—a score rarely given even to the most heralded bottles. Perhaps most telling is their direct comparison to Pappy Van Winkle 15-Year, with both hosts preferring this Heaven Hill offering despite its (relatively) more attainable secondary market price of $1,200-1,500.Whether you're a seasoned bourbon collector or simply appreciate the artistry behind exceptional spirits, this episode captures the magic that happens when passionate enthusiasts encounter something truly special in their glass. Send us a textThe Scotchy Bourbon Boys conduct a comprehensive blind tasting of the entire Weller bourbon lineup to determine which expression truly reigns supreme based solely on taste.• Full Weller lineup includes Special Reserve, Antique 107, 12 Year, Full Proof, CYPB, and William LaRue Weller• Tasting conducted completely blind with color-coded samples to eliminate bias• William LaRue Weller unanimously wins first place with its exceptional rich caramel profile• CYPB (Craft Your Perfect Bourbon) surprisingly takes second place overall• Weller Full Proof secures third with its distinctive candy apple and cinnamon notes• Weller Antique 107 lands in fourth place despite its popularity among bourbon enthusiasts• The highly sought-after Weller 12 Year unexpectedly places fifth in the lineup• Weller Special Reserve finishes last but is still acknowledged as a quality bourbon• Price and availability don't necessarily correlate with quality when tasting blind• Super Nash and Tiny experience palate fatigue and use water and other spirits to reset• Even the lowest-ranked Weller expressions are considered excellent bourbonsCheck out our website at www.scotchiebourbonboys.com for merchandise, glassware, and more information about our sponsors Whiskey Thief Distilling Company, Middle West Spirits, Rosewood Bourbon, and Alan Bishop's podcast "If You Have Ghosts, You Have Everything."A heated debate erupts as Super Nash and Tiny embark on a comprehensive blind tasting of the entire Weller bourbon lineup, revealing surprising favorites and challenging preconceptions about these coveted wheated bourbons. The duo meticulously samples six expressions—Weller Special Reserve, Weller 12 Year, Weller Antique 107, Weller Full Proof, Weller CYPB, and the prestigious William LaRue Weller—with no knowledge of which is which. What follows is a genuine, unfiltered evaluation based purely on taste preferences rather than reputation or price tag."Brown sugar, cinnamon bun, and caramel" notes dominate the conversation as they work through uniquely color-coded samples, discovering significant flavor differences despite all expressions sharing the same wheated bourbon DNA. Super Nash and Tiny's palates pick up distinctive profiles ranging from "pure caramel" to "candy apple with cinnamon," highlighting how aging conditions and proof points transform Buffalo Trace's beloved distillate. When the bottles are finally revealed, William LaRue Weller unanimously claims first place, confirming its reputation as an exceptional limited release. However, several rankings prove genuinely surprising, particularly the performance of Weller CYPB and Full Proof compared to the highly allocated Weller 12 Year. These results challenge conventional wisdom about which Weller expressions truly deliver the best drinking experience.Between passionate disagreements about rankings and hilarious confusion during the reveal, the tasting demonstrates why blind evaluation remains the ultimate test of quality. For bourbon enthusiasts chasing allocated Weller bottles, this episode provides valuable insight into which expressions might actually deserve the hunt—and which might be sitting overlooked on shelves.Whether you're a seasoned Weller collector or bourbon curious, join us for this entertaining and informative journey through Buffalo Trace's most celebrated wheated Add for SOFL voice over Whiskey ThiefSupport the showhttps://www.scotchybourbonboys.com The Scotchy bourbon Boys are #3 in Feedspots Top 60 whiskey podcasts in the world https://podcast.feedspot.com/whiskey_podcasts/
Time to discuss a bit of The Modfather and to help us out we invited comedian and Weller-fan Rich Wilson to help us fill in some of the blanks in our knowledge and to raise the comedy bar higher than we could ever do on our own. Huge huge thanks to him for making the time for us - check out Rich's latest comedy special on Next Up Comedy, his hit podcast Insane In The Men Brain, his music podcast The Tuned Up Time Machine and his website for everything else he's doing at the minute. As well as Weller we have chats about the likes of Jeff Buckley, Beastie Boys and Robson & Jerome so that's something to look forward to, plus Krister has a lot of great suggestions for potential Paul Weller TV projects, every one a winner. As we explain in the episode half of this was recorded with everyone in the same room and half was done over a dodgy Edinburgh hotel wifi connection so please forgive any rubbish audio quality issues - we genuinely tried our best. As always please do give us a follow on our social media platforms and why not go and give us a nice rating or comment over on Spotify now that you're able to while you're checking out this episode's companion playlist (which contains ALL of the songs we talk about on this one) and our ongoing and sprawling playlist of songs from each album that we do an episode on. And if you want to donate to our PayPal account for the price of a pint or a cup of coffee that is always appreciated as well obviously. Cheers!

Ever find yourself hunting down allocated bourbon unicorns while walking right past remarkable bottles hiding in plain sight? You're not alone. The B-Team's latest bourbon exploration uncovers the exceptional Penelope Bourbon Wheated Four Grain expression, sparking genuine excitement rarely seen from our resident whiskey expert. At just $45, this unassuming bottle delivers a perfectly balanced experience that rivals bottles costing five times as much. "If I was judging this in competition, I'd give this a solid gold medal on a blind test," our expert declares, genuinely surprised by the quality in his glass. This discovery leads us into a fascinating discussion about bourbon's four fundamental grains: corn, rye, wheat, and malted barley. We break down how the delicate balance between these components creates distinctive flavor profiles, and why Penelope's strategic emphasis on being a wheated bourbon positions it alongside sought-after brands like Weller and Maker's Mark. The craftsmanship here is undeniable – sweet corn notes blend harmoniously with aromatic wheat characteristics and just enough rye spice to create complexity without overwhelming the palate. The conversation inevitably turns to bourbon snobbery and how social media has trained enthusiasts to chase particular brands while overlooking exceptional options. Russ shares how his friend walked past Russell's Reserve "a hundred times" thinking it looked cheap, only to discover it was his favorite in a premium whiskey lineup. As allocated bottles become increasingly scarce, perhaps it's time we all expand our horizons and judge whiskey by what's in the glass rather than what's on the label. Next time you're browsing bourbon shelves, we challenge you to pick up something unfamiliar – that unassuming bottle might just blow away your expectations!

Send us a textThe bourbon glut is over, with distilleries reporting exceptional sales and Kentucky Bourbon Festival tickets selling out in just four days rather than months.• Pandemic caused a temporary slowdown as society reopened and people returned to busier lifestyles• Political uncertainty during election year contributed to consumer hesitation• Kentucky Bourbon Festival 2025 completely sold out in four days instead of taking until August• Secondary market for allocated bottles like Weller has changed as collectors have already acquired them• Bourbon enthusiasts now seeking unique barrel picks rather than just allocated bottles• Pot still whiskeys offer different flavor profiles than column still products• French Lick Spirit distillery's William Dalton (wheated) and Lillian Sinclair (rye) showcase craft bourbon diversity• American-made whiskeys may benefit from international tariffs as consumers look localListen to our barrel picks breakdown with tasting notes on kettle corn, cherry, butterscotch, and fresh-baked bread profiles. Join us for upcoming events including a smoke wagon tasting in Youngstown on May 21st.Is the bourbon bubble really bursting? Everything you've heard about the "bourbon glut" might be completely wrong. After months of industry predictions about oversupply and waning interest, we're seeing overwhelming evidence of bourbon's resilience and continuing popularity. The Kentucky Bourbon Festival provides perhaps the clearest indicator – what normally takes until August to sell out disappeared in just four days this year. All 7,500 tickets, gone. Heaven Hill's Bernie Lubbers recently confirmed their exceptional fiscal year, and distilleries across Kentucky are reporting similar success. What many analysts missed was that last year's perceived slowdown was merely a temporary pause as society adjusted post-pandemic and navigated election year uncertainties. We dive deep into the evolution of bourbon collectors' interests, noting how the secondary market has shifted away from simply chasing allocated bottles like Weller and EH Taylor. Today's enthusiasts are increasingly drawn to unique barrel picks, innovative finishes, and craft distillery releases that offer something different. We also explore how American whiskey stands to benefit from international tariffs, potentially driving more consumers toward domestic products. The highlight of our episode is an in-depth breakdown of our barrel picks from Spirit of French Lick – the William Dalton (wheated bourbon) and Lillian Sinclair (rye bourbon). Both pot still products offer fascinating tasting notes ranging from kettle corn and cherry to baking spices and fresh bread. These selections represent master distiller Alan Bishop's final barrel picks before his departure, making them particularly special.Ready to join the continuing bourbon conversation? Listen now, and don't forget our upcoming tasting event in Youngstown on May 21st featuring our smoke wagon barrel picks. The bourbon renaissance is just getting started! The tequila train keeps rollin' on Whiskey@Work! This week, Rob and Mark tackle Añejo tequila, diving into two very different bottles: Herradura Ultra and Corazón aged in Blanton's barrels. Along the way, they cough through a cold, reminisce about mezcal mishaps, argue over proof levels, and somehow squeeze in some bourbon news—including Jefferson's return to basics and Weller's big win overseas. Plus, they prep for the upcoming Mountain West Fiesta Fest with a few laughs, a few regrets, and probably too much tequila. Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.

In this episode of Only Bourbon Fans, Albert and the guys talk about their go-to drinks, try a few whiskeys, and chat about what it's like buying the fancy stuff. They break down some popular bottles like Weller and Old Rip Van Winkle, and even get into whether pricey pours at bars are really worth it. A decade ago, if a beer spent a few months in a single bourbon barrel, its release would cause fanfare amongst craft beer obsessives. These days, beers are blended from an increasing number of different barrels for extended periods of time, so we decided to sample beers that represent an increasing number of different barrels to see if more barrels actually means better results. To help us better understand the barrel side of the beer world, we talk to Ethan Schulenberg of Midwest Barrel Company, who provides a variety of barrels for a large number of American craft brewers. He explains the role of a “barrel broker” and how he helps brewers find the right vessel for aging, among many other topics. Also, Craig shouts out Revolution's clever event planning, we challenge our highest ABV beer record, and one of us is slowing turning into E.T. by the end. The very special guest on this episode of The Mile High Podcast is Eddie Weller, a DC from the St. Louis, Missouri, area. His practice is known as “Getting Weller”! He's been serving the Chiropractic profession both internally by training students and doctors alike and by serving over 10,000 people in a little over two decades. He has always sought to add hope to those who feel as if they have tried everything. The truth is, the body doesn't need any assistance. It just needs to have nothing compromising its functioning. He heard that from a Chiropractor when he was 19 years old. He had suffered from IBS and struggled terribly in school. After having his spine analyzed and adjusted, proper nerve system function transformed his life both physically and psychologically. This was the catalyst to his “why.” Dr. Eddie says, “Over the past 20+ years, I have seen miracle after miracle. Life as we know it emanates through your nerve system. If something where to compromise your nerve system, in time, your body (or mind) grows into a health condition. In turn, when your nerve system is restored to proper function, your body then has the opportunity to do all that it can to thrive.” He's the author of three books, It Just Makes Sense, The Infrared Thermography Textbook, and Dr. Bones. His fourth book is coming out soon. Dr. Eddie has been a speaker and presenter at Mile High Weekends in the past and is a frequent guest on this Podcast, diving deep into clinical excellence, the journey toward chiropractic, and how you can make such an impact by focusing on the philosophy and science, and art of chiropractic. He recently launched The Chiro Legacy Club, to help you create a legacy and his 100 Certification on Thermography. To say that Eddy is busy making a difference is an understatement. On this podcast, you'll hear about: The importance of using objective data and instrumentation to assess patient progress It Just Makes Sense about Infrared Thermography Focusing on your core competency Standing out by delivering exceptional chiropractic care And MUCH more! Enjoy this episode, and when you see him in person at Mile High, say hello! He'll be one of the featured speakers. On the morning of January 15, 1947, a woman walking with her young daughter spotted something pale and white lying in the weeds of a vacant lot. When the woman walked closer to get a better look, she made a horrifying discovery: the bisected body of a young woman, brutally murdered and like trash in the abandoned overgrown lot. The woman in the lot would soon be identified as twenty-two-year-old aspiring actress Elizabeth Short, who the press nicknamed “The Black Dahlia.” Thank you to the Incredible Dave White of Bring Me the Axe Podcast for research and Writing support!ReferencesAssociated Press. 1947. 1947.
