Today the SibNerds are talking about Chapters 10-11 (and that Syl Anagist chapter in the middle)! This section ended with both Essun and Nassun moving forward on new-found resolute paths—if they had any doubts, they don't anymore. We learned about how Stone Eaters are made (sort of) and what happened to the early Stone Eaters. Creep factors were high. Next time we'll be discussing Chapters 12 and Syl Anagist: Zero! Don't forget, our Patreon's get to vote on our next read along! Here are your options: 1. The Star-Touched Queen by: Roshani Chokshi 2. The Winter King by: Bernard Cornwell 3. Tress of the Emerald Sea by: Brandon Sanderson Happy Reading! Today the SibNerds are talking about the Prologue – Chapter 2! We're diving right back in and starting with a Hoa Prologue. It's not a long prologue, but we talk about it for quite a while because there are so many truths that N.K. Jemisin is revealing. It's so good—we got goosebumps. Essun is recovering from her brutal fight that closed out The Obelisk Gate, and Nassun is forced into a brutal fight of her own. There are still things that even Nassun must look away from. Next time we'll be discussing Syl Anagist 5 – Syl Anagist 4! Happy Reading! Today the SibNerds are talking about the last few chapters of the book, Chapters 19 - 20! Essun tried to negotiate with the other comm, which didn't end well. Thank goodness for Hoa! Magic origin reveal in this section, too! Gray Stone Eater name reveal – Steel! Who's going to have control over the Obelisk Gate? And who's bringing the Moon home? Can't wait to find out! The pacing of this book is so perfect. The climax hit us with high stakes and the falling action gave us just enough buffer to get us ready for the next book—and we are very excited about that next book! Join us for our next Read Along, beginning on May 15! We'll be reading Chapters 1 – 2 of The Stone Sky by N.K. Jemisin! Happy Reading! Today the SibNerds are talking about Chapters 16 - Interlude! We've finally gotten the Hoa lore reveal to Essun that we've been waiting for! How wild is it that Nassun has bonded with the person who gave Essun a broken model for how to love? We'll be thinking about this for a long time. And the juxtaposition of Nassun and Essun's meltdowns? Woah. Next time we'll be discussing the end of the book! Let's finish this thing! Happy Reading! Today the SibNerds are talking about Chapters 4-6! There are some thought-provoking comparisons between Jija and Essun in this week's discussion—and Nassun's perspective of each of her parents is challenging. The moon is still a mystery—but we think it's about to be Tonkee's problem! Or at least her special interest. What did you think of that sneaky little interlude? What do we think Hoa is up to? Next time we'll be discussing Chapters 7-9! Happy Reading! Twitter: @litround Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/LitRoundTable Patreon: https://www.patreon.com/thelitroundtable Art: Kris Easler: https://www.kriseasler.com/
Today the SibNerds are talking about the Chapters 12 - 15! Did we get enough evidence to support Josef's theory about Damya, Syenite, and Essun's identities? We still have so many questions, mostly about the stone eaters and the obelisks… but also everything else, too. Guess we'll just have to keep on reading! Next time we'll be discussing Chapters 16 - 19! Happy Reading! Twitter: @litround Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/LitRoundTable Patreon: https://www.patreon.com/thelitroundtable Art: Kris Easler: https://www.kriseasler.com/
Today the SibNerds are talking about the Interlude - Chapter 11! Damaya has entered an evil Hogwarts type of environment—where you can't trust the teachers not to kill you. Essun learns that Hoa is more than he seems…but also, what is Hoa?!?! And Syenite is starting to learn more about Alabaster's power—but there are still so many questions! Next time we'll be discussing Chapters 12 - 15! Happy Reading! Twitter: @litround Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/LitRoundTable Patreon: https://www.patreon.com/thelitroundtable Art: Kris Easler: https://www.kriseasler.com/
Today the SibNerds are talking about the Prologue – Chapter 3! A rare instance of the second-person POV! And it's done so well! It's visceral and raw and it keeps the reader close. We're intrigued and invested! The world building in this first section is impressive—and it didn't leave Anna nearly as lost as she normally is, which could be because of the second-person POV. In a lot of ways this appears to be a story about grief. Do you think Essun is right to belief her husband killed their son? Do you think Damaya is safe with Schaffa? How will Essun and Damaya's paths cross? Next time we'll be discussing Chapters 4 - 8! Happy Reading! E aí, chefia. Sejam todos, todes e todas bem-vindas ao Boteco dos Versados! Hoje temos a casa cheia e animada! Andi and Lise dig into multiple Hugo-winner N.K. Jemisin’s amazing and multi-layered The Fifth Season (2015), the first in The Broken Earth trilogy. Andi and Lise talk about Jemisin’s use of point-of-view for different characters, how their stories interweave with the world-building, and the world-building itself, which they found utterly engrossing and brilliantly presented. Synopsis, from the site Deadline: The Fifth Season is described as an epic drama set in a world where civilization-destroying earthquakes occur with deadly regularity. A small minority of inhabitants has the ability to quiet these earthquakes, but they also can cause them. The series follows three women, each of whom possesses these special, Earth-controlling abilities: Damaya, a young girl training to serve the Empire; Syenite, an ambitious young woman ordered to breed with her bitter and frighteningly powerful mentor; and Essun, a mother searching for the husband who murdered her young son and kidnapped her daughter mere hours after a Season tore a fiery rift across the land. Info about N.K. Jemisin’s The Broken Earth trilogy NPR: “’Fifth Season‘ Embraces The Scale And Complexity Of Fantasy” Deadline: “N.K. Jemisin’s ‘The Fifth Season’ Book to be Developed as TV Series at TNT” Info about N.K. Jemisin’s The Broken Earth trilogy GQ: “N.K. Jemisin Is Trying to Keep the World from Ending” This week Andi geeked out about the CW’s Nancy Drew, and the Eddie Flynn series of novels by Steve Cavanaugh. Thank you very much to Denise for once again commissioning a voyeur-level episode so that I can yammer on for a half hour longer. because shit just got very very real. So it turns out that things are in many ways worse than I had suspected, although there's at least the mercy of painlessness. The stone people are kept around to make the propoganda about this other lost civilization seem true, but once they stop fulfilling that purpose they are essentially killed and the city is powered by their bodies. Lord have mercy, no wonder Hoa and Co. have destroyed the fucking place (at least, as far as i guess). Then we find out that Nassun is likely pregnant, and Essun realizes that Schaffa is gone forever and that keeping him alive would be a selfish cruelty. There's so much happening, I am DYING to know what happens. ONE SECTION LEFT!
Thank you very much to Denise for commissioning this episode! Whew boy, these are some really tough fucking chapters. First off there's the reveal that the way that the stone people were made is actually in reverse of what I had thought; the orogenes as we know them appear to have come BEFORE the stone people, which is totally confusing and yet, once explained, makes the most sense. Then there's the desert trip in which Essun really gets raked over the coals and a huge number of their people die. It's almost as bad as the trial that Nassun experiences, although in the end I think Nassun winds up by far the worse off of the two. Thank you very much for listening, and I will see you soon with a new episode!

Thank you so much to Denise for commissioning this episode! Y'all, I'm continuing the grand tradition of crying while live on camera, and I'm just gonna assume this will continue until the end of the series. Whew. These chapters, we see to the heart of what's going on with Essun, and she's really struggling with putting the welfare of the comm ahead of her own personal feelings for vengeance and, let's face it, fear. While I deeply understand where Ykka is coming from on that, I'm really having a hard time disagreeing with Nassun's approach to things. Her feelings on the matter especially make sense considering what happens to all her friends. Well, those kids who used to be her friends, I suppose. Thanks so much for listening, and I will see you soon with a new episode!
Thanks so very much to Denise for commissioning this episode! I can't believe I'm on the last book of the series. I'm dying to know how things end up, but I'm also going to be really heartbroken to say goodbye to these characters. This book begins almost exactly where the previous one left off. Essun is still passed out from her efforts, and Nassun is literally still standing over her father's body. Well, what's left of it. Essun has no idea until she wakes that she's destroyed the comm they were living in, and she's really morose at the news that everyone low-key hates her, and they only keep her around because they need Hoa. Nassun, Steel, and Schaffa slaughter the other two guardians, and she convinces Schaffa to take a little journey with her, along with the rest of her classmates. We also get a closer look at the origins of Hoa, and it's really fascinating. I'm absolutely dying to know more about this place and what they did to him, but I'm also not really looking forward to finding out what that looked like. Thanks so much for listening, and I will see you soon with a new episode!
This is the last episode of Obelisk Gate is here, thanks to Denise, who is wonderful and I thank her so much. The way this book ends is really something, lord almighty. We find out exactly what it was that Alabaster was talking about when he told Essun that she had to work on creating a "network". Initially, when she's tapping into the power of the other orogenes, she thinks that's what he must have meant: a network of the orogenes. But once she dips back into that power using an obelisk, she realizes that he meant something quite different, and much bigger. And somewhere else, Nassun can feel the power of what her mother is doing, and she's also learning about the moon getting pulled out of orbit. But she's coming to some very different conclusions on what should be done with it. Thank you so much for listening, and I will see you soon with a new episode!
Thank you to Jason for commissioning this episode. While Jason is no longer with us, he's still a part of UNspoiled! and there is another episode coming up this week with his name on it. These chapters are really intense, which is true of all of them to a degree, but this one is particularly drastic. Nassun turns a corner here and decides to kill a whole fulcrum full of orogenes because she feels they're somehow damaged. The worst part is that she feels they're damaged in the exact way that her mother is damaged, which makes her actions even more heartbreaking and brutal. Meanwhile, Essun is struggling with the lessons she's taking from Alabaster to hook the obelisks from the sky to get the moon back. It's not going awesomely, and she's frustrated, but she gets a little distracted when an evil stone-eater shows up and rips Hoa apart. Thanks for listening, and I will see you soon with a new episode!
Many thanks to Denise for commissioning this episode! I'm so glad that this episode will be followed by a few others coming up, because this story (while always fascinating) is really starting to pick up steam. In these chapters, we've got a lot more information about everything that has been happening with Nassun. It's really something that I'm as invested in Nassun as I am, because I really didn't care about her at all just last book, even though she was the main motivation for Essun. I just didn't know enough about her, but now I'm really interested in what's going on with her, for....obvious reasons. As for Essun, she seems to be basically settling into the commune in a more permanent fashion, and she's being given the job of training all the other baby orogenes. Hoo boy. Thanks a ton for listening, and I will see you soon with a new episode!

Luke and Dan debate if Essun is mother of the year, or monster of the year. Luke decides to rain on Dan's pirate parade and freaks out about just like, some casual murder. Ya boys have some serious questions about the end of this book. and surprise -- Luke needs me to Dansplain about truffles; don't worry its relevant. We are also excited to take Alabaster's Body Sculpt Beach Workout class. Special thanks to VOLO for the intro and outro music.
Many thanks to Jason for commissioning this episode, the penultimate episode of The Fifth Season, one of the most intensely emotional books I've read in a long time. This episode, we find out that Syenite and Essun are indeed the same person, which was a theory that I sort of let drop because I assumed that the author wouldn't play the same "trick" a second time. I use the word "trick" even though that really cheapens what she's done here because it's really the easiest way to say that I was too stupid to notice something. Also, there's a huge time jump so at this point she's got a child and a whole new life going on. And we know because of what happens later with Essun that this doesn't last, and I'm not excited about finding out about that. Thank you so much for listening, and I will see you all again soon with the final episode!
Many thanks to Ashlyn for continuing to sponsor this book, and for emailing me with some very provocative questions. I wonder how many listeners had the same thoughts and theories that Ashlyn had about the interlude? Because she shared with me what she believes it's referencing and I think that might be exactly it. This section we get some time with Damaya, who is being a model student at the Fulcrum and because of this, becomes a target for other students who are not doing so well. We have an introduction that familiarizes us with the militaristic methods employed on these children, and the is quickly followed by someone trying to make poor Damaya's life hell by using those methods to punish her. When she finds out who it is, it's kind of heartbreaking. Then there's everything with Syenite, who has to deal with the rude bureaucrats in Allia, and then finally deals with the harbor and finds out that there's something very different than what anyone thought going on beneath the water. Lastly, we have a short time with Essun and Hoa and their new smelly friend, and a nice bit of trans representation that is barely commented on at all, which is a very refreshing change. I am rooting for this little band of weirdo misfits. Thanks for listening, and I will see you soon with a new chapter!
Many thanks to Ashlyn for commissioning the next episode of The Fifth Season, and for introducing me to this beautiful, heartbreaking book. Also I want to apologize again for having to reschedule, which is always a bummer. Hopefully it will not happen again. This episode, Ashlyn asks me to revisit the interlude and see if there's anything that I notice about it. She has something in mind that is a theory for coming books (Ashlyn hasn't read the others as of yet) and she's curious to see if I am of the same mind that she is. I'm not sure if I answered your question, Ashlyn, but let me know! We are with Essun again in this section, and she finally gets to see what's going on with Hoa and the fact that he has some really weird abilities. Also, it seems that they may have added another person to their little band, although I'm hoping that they can convince her to take a dunk in the creek. Also, Syenite and Alabaster finally reach their destination, and Alabaster can't resist being a bit of a hardass. It's really fun to watch, but it almost results in his death, so I guess you could say I'm ambivalent about that. Thanks so much for listening, and I will see you soon with a new episode!
