The press is the only industry the Constitution protects. Hugo Balta thinks too many newsrooms forgot why, and he walked out to prove it. Hugo Balta spent three decades in newsrooms at NBC, MSNBC, Telemundo, CBS, ABC, and ESPN before leaving mainstream media for independent journalism. He now serves as executive editor of The Fulcrum and publisher of the Latino News Network, and he remains the only person in the history of the National Association of Hispanic Journalists to serve twice as its president. This conversation runs from a Paterson, NJ childhood as the son of Peruvian immigrants to why he rejects objectivity as a marketing tool, what a free press is actually for, and the morning he flew the flag upside down. Merriam-Webster's Word of the Day for July 12, 2026 is: fulcrum FULL-krum noun In technical use, fulcrum refers to the support on which a lever moves when it is used to lift something. In figurative use, fulcrum refers to a person or thing that makes it possible for something to function or develop, or in other words, one who plays an essential role in something. // Although the lead actor was phenomenal, critics suggested that the supporting cast was the real fulcrum of the show. See the entry > Examples: “The moral fulcrum of Christopher Marlowe's The Tragical History of the Life and Death of Doctor Faustus, in which a scholar gains knowledge and power through a demonic pact, is a relatively straightforward statement on the human condition.” — Eric Olson, Literary Hub, 14 Jan. 2026 Did you know? The Latin word fulcrum, which refers to the head or back support of a couch, comes from the verb fulcīre, which means “to prop, support.” When fulcrum was first used in English in the 17th century, it referred to the point on which a lever or similar device (such as the oar of a boat) is supported. The literal use easily supported figurative use, and it didn't take long for the word to develop a meaning referring to one deemed essential to the function or development of something. Despite fulcrum's multiple senses, the word's meanings have kept a steady theme. In zoology, fulcrum refers to a part of an animal that serves as a hinge or support, such as the joint supporting a bird's wing.
In this episode of V-FM Pensions, hosts Darren and Nico are joined (again) by Matt Roberts, Head of Alternative Solutions, at Fulcrum Asset Management. As well as Darren ranting about FIFA and the lack of democracy in the UK, the podcast discusses resilience, value for money and why the future of pension investing is about far more than chasing returns. We chat about whether productive investment can help create a virtuous circle of stronger economic growth and better retirement outcomes, what the UK's shrinking public markets mean for DC savers, and challenge some of the assumptions driving the private markets debate. In a wide ranging episode, we also discuss natural capital, venture capital, governance, and systemic risk.

Imagine a blueprint so ambitious it aims to remake the American government from the ground up, drawn by conservative architects at the Heritage Foundation. That's Project 2025, launched in April 2023 as the 900-page Mandate for Leadership, a detailed roadmap to consolidate executive power and advance right-wing priorities, according to the project's own documentation from Heritage.org.Its four pillars—restoring the family, dismantling the administrative state, defending sovereignty, and securing individual rights—promise sweeping reforms. Picture federal agencies reshaped overnight: the Department of Education and Homeland Security dismantled entirely, as outlined in Wikipedia's summary of the plan. The Environmental Protection Agency would see its staff slashed by 50%, with climate research defunded because, as the manifesto states, taxpayer dollars must serve "the national interest in a concrete way in line with conservative principles."Key proposals target health and welfare too. Medicaid faces caps on funding, stricter work requirements, and a shift to vouchers, while Medicare could default to privatized Advantage plans, potentially raising retirement ages and cutting benefits, per the House Democrats' subject-by-subject breakdown. Taxes? A flat income rate for individuals and corporate cuts to spur growth. On energy, restrictions on oil drilling vanish, Arctic development surges, and states like California lose power to tighten emissions rules.Fast-forward to 2026: The Heritage Foundation's latest priorities, reported by Axios, pledge support for the Trump administration's fossil fuel push to avert electricity shortages, echoing Project 2025's call to boost oil and gas. Trackers from the Center for Progressive Reform reveal 53% of its domestic actions—283 of 532—initiated or completed in the first year post-inauguration, from curbing unions to privatizing student loans, which LULAC warns could burden working families and widen inequality.Experts like the ACLU decry it as eroding checks and balances, censoring classroom discussions on race and gender. Yet proponents, in the foreword, warn conservatives have "just two years and one shot to get this right," per The Fulcrum's analysis. As midterms loom in 2026, Project 2025's ambitions test America's governance resilience—will states resist, courts intervene, or will its vision take root?Thank you for tuning in, listeners. Welcome back to the RPGBOT.Podcast, where we're teaching you how to play the Star Wars tabletop RPG the best possible way: by immediately committing crimes in space. In this episode, Randall introduces a Wookie slicer with Force powers on the run from the law, while Ash debuts a former Imperial smuggler who solves problems the traditional way: shooting first and then leaving without askin questions. Tyler GMs a Star Wars RPG actual play session which quickly becomes a chaotic adventure featuring pirate stations, suspicious hookahs, questionable dice math, and a cantina band legally required to play the same song forever. A mysterious employer named Fulcrum sends our heroes to a lawless Outer Rim space station to hack a maintenance terminal. Everything is going well until an Imperial Star Destroyer arrives and Ash's obligations immeditaly become a problem. Buckle up for an Edge of the Empire actual play. The dice are weird, the space criminals are weirder, and "failing forward" may be the players' only hope for success. Show Notes In this Star Wars TTRPG actual play episode, the RPGBOT crew dives into the Fantasy Flight Games Star Wars roleplaying system (Edge of the Empire) to demonstrate how the game works in practice. Through a chaotic but hilarious adventure, listeners get a hands-on look at the mechanics of the narrative dice, Destiny Points, and a small taste of combat. Randall plays Fricata, a Wookiee slicer with Force abilities and a confusing criminal history. Ash plays Nehlbren, a Twi'lek smuggler pilot who once served the Galactic Empire but is now carving out her own path in the galaxy's criminal underworld. A mysterious contact known only as "Fulcrum" hires them to infiltrate a hidden pirate station called Comfort Station. Access the station's central maintenance terminal, upload a program via a code cylinder (basically a Star Wars USB drive), retrieve encrypted data, destroy the evidence, and don't let anyone else get the data. Of course, nothing is ever simple in the Outer Rim. The players interact with shady NPCs, explore the environment, and begin scheming their way toward the maintenance systems. The episode also provides practical demonstrations of skill checks and how narrative dice results influence storytelling. If you've ever wondered how Edge of the Empire actually plays at the table, this episode is a perfect example. Key Takeaways Fantasy Flight's Star Wars RPG uses narrative dice, meaning results generate story outcomes beyond simple success or failure. Actual play sessions are one of the best ways to learn the system, showing how mechanics like Advantage and Threat influence the narrative. Character backgrounds drive story complications, such as Nelbren's Imperial past creating immediate conflict when the Empire appears. Social checks (Charm, Negotiation, Deception) can dramatically change encounters—even avoiding docking fees on a pirate station. Knowledge and perception checks help players navigate complex environments, especially when searching for hidden objectives. Slicing (hacking) is a core gameplay element in Edge of the Empire and often requires creative thinking. Force tokens create a dynamic resource pool shared between players and the GM, constantly shifting the narrative balance. The Cool vs Vigilance initiative system determines combat order depending on whether characters were prepared for the fight. Edge of the Empire emphasizes storytelling over rigid mechanics, encouraging improvisation and player creativity. Sometimes the best plan in a Star Wars RPG is still just shooting first. Some of the missiles flying are sending messages. Every American strategist should be deeply uncomfortable. Remember the Russian fighter jet that Turkey shot down? Here are some details not getting noticed. Where were those missle's heading? Cyprus? The goal was to get Western forces off the island. Remember, Turkey invaded the island in 1974. They could be reasserting dominance. Fighter jets deployed with a defense as the excuse. Russia, China and Turkey are now acting together. Coordination of interests at play. Who gains? NATO is looking like a big fat pussy. Was Turkey actually being shot at? The evidence is in front of us. The response they did NOT trigger is hugely important. So often they go right to the edge, and then pull back. Here's how the board is resolved. A return to the broader strategic picture. Israel is still bombing Syria. The Kurdish question get's it's answer. Greece gets a Cyprus solution too. Chy-na will crawl to the table. The end game is not destruction, but a re-structuring of the board. Nothing is random, it's carefully planned architecture. This is the brutal truth with nasty details that nobody else would ever tell you.

The beautiful lady winds up her discourse with a corollary that combines both revelation and reason to offer a fulcrum to COMEDY as a whole: The classical world dreamed of Eden.Redemption is a cul-de-sac, returning us to our primal state while also offering us a way to remain readers of the classical world's poetry.Join me, Mark Scarbrough, as we explore the end of the lady's discourse, the longest speech by a woman yet in COMEDY.Here are the segments for this episode of WALKING WITH DANTE:[01:15] My English translation of PURGATORIO, Canto XXVIII, lines 134 - 148. Independent U.S. Senate candidate from Idaho, Army veteran and telecom leader Todd Achilles returns to Independent Americans for a hard-charging Football Friday that cuts through the chaos. Todd and host Paul Rieckhoff break down Trump's unauthorized boat strikes and the unfolding Signalgate scandal, why Secretary Hegseth is “fundamentally unfit,” and how Congress has surrendered its War Powers as America edges toward a conflict with Venezuela. From ICE raids zip-tying kids at a rural Idaho horse track to a broken visa system that powers the state's only truly strategic industry—agriculture—Todd explains what this looks like on the ground for red hats, trucker hats, hard hats and cowboy hats across all 44 Idaho counties. He lays out a simple two-by-two matrix for understanding the Venezuela mission, why this should be a DEA and Coast Guard problem, and how misusing the military puts Idaho Guard troops and all Americans at risk. Paul and Todd go deep on why independents are the real solution to Trump, RFK Jr., Mamdani and the extremes of both parties—and how one independent veteran in the Senate could become the decisive fulcrum on confirmations, war powers and corruption. Todd details his David-vs-Goliath run against Senator Jim Risch—the fourth-oldest and one of the wealthiest members of the Senate who hasn't held an in-person town hall since 2009—and why national Republicans are suddenly “scared” of Idaho's independent wave. It's also Football Friday: Paul and Todd pick Boise State on the Smurf Turf, Texas Tech, Georgia and undefeated Indiana, and talk about why college football in Idaho is as local—and as political—as it gets. They close with “something good,” honoring D-Day medic and Native American hero Charles Shay, the powerful service tradition of Idaho's tribes, and the growing, hopeful movement of Americans breaking out of partisan trenches and declaring their independence. Any chance we have to put Doug in the hot-seat has to be a good episode, right? Well, if you wondered how Doug managed to screw up DVG's development of Fulcrum Leader, this is the episode for you. With veteran game designer Roger Gerrish sharpening his knives, and the podcast's own Steve Toth getting ready to dig in on design mistakes deeper than a tick on a hound - this episode might just break Doug's outrageously overblown ego once and for all. As we head into Thanksgiving we've got a special Veterans Day “Winners Circle” town hall that brings together Independent Veterans of America (IVA) candidates who are changing American politics from the ground up. Independent Americans host and IVA founder Paul Rieckhoff moderates a powerful, unfiltered conversation with two newly‑elected independent veterans—Mike Procuk (Frederick County, VA School Board) and Toby Proctor (North Granby, CT Board of Finance)—and IVA candidates Todd Achilles (Idaho), Donna Charles (Virginia) and Brian Bengs (South Dakota). They break down how independents are actually winning, why veterans are some of the last public figures people still trust, and how corrupt, money‑soaked party politics is failing regular Americans. From school boards and local finance boards to U.S. Senate races across red states, these veterans share ground‑truth stories from the trail, the brutal ballot‑access obstacles they face, and the insider strategies that prove independents are not spoilers—they're the future. This is a Grave Talks CLASSIC EPISODE! Welcome to Lake Tomahawk, where the scent of pine mixes with whispers from the beyond and the local café might serve you more than just coffee. Author and paranormal investigator Mark Palbicki has spent years documenting the strange, familiar hauntings of his hometown — ghosts who once shared the same sidewalks, barstools, and stories. With his team Fulcrum, Mark doesn't chase legends; he pursues spirits he actually knew in life. From Donna of the Village Café, who may still linger behind the counter, to Buckskin, a restless presence who might've followed Mark home, every encounter blurs the boundary between the living and the lost. Mark shares firsthand accounts of Lake Tomahawk's spectral residents, including the chilling moment an orb was caught on security footage in his mother's home. These aren't strangers haunting him — they're old friends who never stopped saying hello. Get the book on Amazon or wherever books are sold.
