Episode 574: Games that use movement points Episode release date is April 2, 2025 Show Notes This week we are doing a one episode discussion of games that use movement points as a movement. What are movement points you ask? Well, movement points regulate how far a player can move their pieces during the game. For example, players are given a specific number of "points" that can be spent to move game pieces. Different spaces or terrains on the game board may cost varying amounts of movement points to enter. Players may receive a set number of movement points each turn that can be spread across multiple pieces. Those points could fluctuate depending on card draws or dice rolls. Sometimes movement points can be part of a larger pool of actions, and movement can be part of or one of those actions. In short, movement points provide a structured way to manage in game movement while adding a tactical element to gameplay. So let's make it a point to move to the game table and discuss some games. Carnegie is definitely a good game, I think it's tough to outcompete some of the newer ones though. It was a popular blip for a sec, then kinda floated down to the lower mid of bgg pack. It's still a good game, solid 7. Maracaibo would also have a choice of action to move your ship a certain distance also for triggering spaces. Not sure if that's totally true movement points, but fairly close The only other ones I can even think of would be troop movement for war games, like War of the Ring/for Arrakis or Axis & Allies. War of the Ring is awesome! Great 2p strategy game. War for Arrakis, same designer, basically the truncated version of War of the Ring in Dune! The Switch 2 faces an uphill battle, and its only half Nintendo's fault. Plus more trailers from Cinemacon, The Predator gets animated, and Robert Pattison may be heading to Arrakis. Meanwhile, Minecraft breaks the box office in more ways than one, Bungie pulls the lid off of Marathon.
This week, Travis is joined by Darin of the Nostalgiacast and Back to Bluey to talk about 2024's Dune Part 2. Directed by Denis Villeneuve starring Timothée Chalamet, Zendaya, Rebecca Ferguson, and a host of others, it's the continuation of the story of Paul Atredies and his rise to power on Arrakis. So, is this one the epic that it should be? Do the visuals and sound really warrant an Academy Award? Will the spice flow? Arrakis. Dune. Desert Planet. But maybe not the one you’re thinking of. In our own very peculiar way we honor David Lynch by discussing the feature film he probably liked the least, 1984’s “Dune.” Sting with a knife! Patrick Stewart riding a sandworm! How does it all compare with the modern version? Does it have its own special lower-budget charms? (Don’t mention the voiceovers…) What about the voiceovers? And how much does nostalgia fit into our appreciation of this movie? Jason Snell with Steve Lutz, Erika Ensign, Dan Moren and John Siracusa.

Yandal Resources Ltd (ASX:YRL) continues to advance exploration at the Ironstone Well-Barwidgee (IWB) Gold Project in Western Australia, focusing on the Arrakis, Siona and New England Granite (NEG) prospects. At Arrakis, initial reverse circulation (RC) drilling has identified gold mineralisation at depth. The prospect, part of the three-kilometre-long Caladan regolith anomaly, has sub-vertical mineralisation that remains untested at depth and along strike. Yandal has commenced deeper RC drilling to further investigate. At the newly discovered Siona prospect, the company has launched a 1,200-metre diamond drilling program to extend previous RC holes and assess deeper gold potential. The drilling aims to confirm extensions to prior results, including 107 metres at 1 g/t gold from 96 metres and 11 metres at 0.5 g/t gold from 270 metres. RC drilling continues at NEG, targeting the eastern intrusive margin and internal structures. An infill ground gravity survey has been completed, with data now being processed. Additionally, first-pass aircore drilling at Irulan has returned promising results, including 11 metres at 1.7 g/t gold from 97 metres. Further aircore drilling is planned. Yandal expects results from NEG in March and Siona diamond drilling in April. #YandalResources #GoldExploration #MiningNews #WesternAustralia #DrillingUpdate #GoldMining #ExplorationDrilling #RCDrilling #DiamondDrilling #MineralExploration #IWBProject #GoldProspects #MiningIndustry #ResourceDevelopment #Geology #AircoreDrilling #GoldMineralisation #Siona #Arrakis #NewEnglandGranite

At the time of this recording, it was my birthday, and - in true Hobbit fashion - I'm giving YOU the gift of diving into the vast deserts of Dune with the always insightful Richard Rohlin! In this impromptu episode, we're unpacking Denis Villeneuve's Dune films—praising the awe-inspiring visuals, iconic performances, and meticulous attention to detail in part one while grappling with the pacing, missing lore, and religious undertones in part two. From the pulse-pounding shield fighting to the enigma of spice and its place in Frank Herbert's epic world-building, we tackle it all. We discuss Paul Atreides' journey, the complexities of messianic archetypes, and whether Dune truly captures Herbert's layered philosophical and ecological themes—or if Hollywood just can't do religion justice. Plus, there's plenty of nerdery, from Warhammer 40K parallels to pondering the real Kwisatz Haderach (hint: Duncan Idaho fans, this one's for you).

I continue covering this year's Oscars nominees for Best Picture with Denis Villeneuve's DUNE: PART 2, the continuation of Villeneuve's attempt to create high-minded blockbuster fantasy to a new generation. When I was a kid, I had LORD OF THE RINGS. As a 30-year-old, I have this. Think the darkness of EMPIRE STRIKES BACK with the expansive scale of THE TWO TOWERS and you'll have an idea of the second chapter of Paul Atreides' (Timothee Chalamet) journey from naive boy to insecure, megalomaniacal messianic cult leader. Via spice-driven hallucinations, Paul sees his desert planet of Arrakis, along with everyone he's ever loved, burned to ash via thermonuclear war. In a desperate attempt to stave off this future, he learns the way of the sand-dwelling Fremen people to gain their trust and help in his holy? crusade. This is the kind of movie I want 100+ million-dollar movies to be: artistically fearless on a gargantuan, sandworm-sized scale. As thoughtful as it is simply fucking entertaining. DUNE: PART 2 is available to stream on Max and Netflix. It's available to purchase for home video on 4K, Bluray & DVD. And if you're lucky, I still see some options for a theatrical viewing, if you just have to catch Chalamet's fluffy hair on the big screen. --- Follow The Movies on social media: linktr.ee/themovies_pod
From the sands of Arrakis, to the secret turmoil of the lives of the most powerful men in the Catholic Church. Conclave served us some of the best actors of their generation throwing shade at each other while being lit and framed in some of the most beautiful shots of the year. Join Kyle, Kenny, Max, and Naomi, Max's sister, as we discuss her top 4 movies of all time! We also briefly touch on Finspan/Wyrmspan, Arkham Horror, Arcs, & Ware for Arrakis! Also some Max bullying, some tokenism, old awful Aunts, near death ninja stars, and more... It's a wild one! You may notice this is a shorter episode. In episode 22, we review Dune: Imperium and Dune: Imperium - Uprising by DireWolfDigital and discuss our first, second, and third impressions of the game. To start off the episode, we chat about the games that are bringing us joy: SETI: Search for Extraterrestrial Intelligence, Castle Combo, Cities, and nana: Christmas Edition. Vying for dominance of Arrakis, the leaders of the Great Houses of the Landsraad manipulate resources and their political influence to control the spice to control the universe. Through worker placement and deck building, each leader sends Agents across Dune to gather water, solari, and spice while crafting alliances with the four major Factions, sending units to the Conflict, and gaining persuasion. Beware of spies helping your rivals, disruptions in plans from intrigue cards, and sandworms joining the Conflict; don't start celebrating your win too soon. We love Dune, and, surprisingly, we all come to the same conclusion on which game comes out ahead. The spice must flow, and this podcast [usually] does too. Find us on Instagram @boardgamehomies
Hola, Chavalería! En este podcast, hablamos de la gran sorpresa de estas navidades: ¡Devir ha comprado Maldito!
"Dune: Part Two" was one of 2024's biggest films critically, financially, and now, awards-wise, as it's on a similar run as the first film was in 2021 through early 2022. "Dune" went on to receive 10 Oscar nominations and six wins: Best Cinematography, Best Film Editing, Best Production Design, Best Original Score, Best Sound, and Best Visual Effects. The second film impressively ups the scale, delivering one of the grandest big-screen achievements audiences have experienced in their lifetimes, and we're proud to have many members of the crew here to dive back into the sands of Arrakis with us as Oscar voting gets underway for the 97th Academy Awards. First, we have my interview with Academy Award-nominated Director, Co-Writer and Producer Denis Villeneuve, followed by Brendan Hodges's conversation with Academy Award-winning Cinematographer Greig Fraser, then we have Giovanni Lago's interview with Academy Award-winning Costume Designer Jacqueline West, then we have Dan Bayer's interview with Academy Award-winning Production Designer Patrice Vermette and Set Decorator Shane Vieau, followed by my interviews with Academy Award-winning Film Editor Joe Walker, Academy-Award winning sound team consisting of Supervising Sound Editor & Sound Designer Richard King, and Re-Recording Mixers Ron Bartlett and Doug Hemphill, and then we end on my conversation with Academy Award-winning Visual Effects Supervisor Paul Lambert. Please be sure to check out the film, which is now available to rent digitally from Warner Bros. Pictures or stream on HBO Max and is up for your consideration for this year's Academy Awards in all eligible categories. Thank you, and enjoy!
We Watched So Much Stuff This Week This week on the podcast, Brian and Darryl review… Gladiator II, Transformers One, the penultimate Supes & Lolo, and the first two episodes of Dune: Prophecy. Episode Index Intro: 0:07 Gladiator 2: 4:28 Transformers: One: 17:54 Supes & Lolo: 30:35 Dunc: Prophecy: 44:25 Gladiator 2 (2024) Out of 10 Lucius Was Not A Treat Clarks Darryl: 6/10 Brian: 8.2/10 Summary “Gladiator II,” directed by Ridley Scott, is a 2024 epic historical action film that serves as a sequel to the 2000 classic “Gladiator.” The story is set 16 years after the original, focusing on Lucius Verus Aurelius (Paul Mescal), the son of Maximus Decimus Meridius and Lucilla. Living under the alias “Hanno” in Numidia, Lucius's life is shattered when General Acacius (Pedro Pascal) leads a Roman invasion that results in the death of his wife and his enslavement. Forced into the gladiatorial arena, Lucius seeks vengeance against Acacius and the corrupt twin emperors, Geta and Caracalla. He gains the mentorship of Macrinus (Denzel Washington), a former slave and ambitious arms dealer with his own designs on power. As Lucius rises through the ranks of gladiators, he discovers his true heritage and confronts the political machinations of Rome, mirroring the journey of his father, Maximus. The film features intense combat sequences, including battles against exotic animals like rhinos and sharks, and delves into themes of revenge, identity, and the quest for justice. While it expands on the original's narrative, some critics note that it lacks the emotional depth of its predecessor. Nonetheless, “Gladiator II” offers a visually spectacular experience with strong performances, particularly from Washington, who brings a compelling presence to the role of Macrinus. “Gladiator II” was released in theaters on November 22, 2024, and has received generally positive reviews from critics. Transformers One (2024) Out of 10 I’d Want to Kill Orion Pax Toos Darryl: 6.25/10 Brian: 6.4/10 Summary “Transformers One” is a 2024 American animated science fiction action film that explores the origins of the iconic characters Optimus Prime and Megatron. Directed by Josh Cooley, the film features a star-studded voice cast, including Chris Hemsworth as Orion Pax (who becomes Optimus Prime) and Brian Tyree Henry as D-16 (who becomes Megatron). Set on the planet Cybertron, the narrative delves into the early relationship between Orion Pax and D-16, who start as close friends bonded like brothers. As the story unfolds, their differing ideologies lead to a rift, setting the stage for the epic conflict between Autobots and Decepticons. The film also introduces other key characters, such as Elita-1 (voiced by Scarlett Johansson) and B-127 (voiced by Keegan-Michael Key), providing a rich backstory to the Transformers universe. “Transformers One” premiered in Sydney, Australia, on September 11, 2024, and was released in the United States on September 20, 2024. The film received generally positive reviews from critics, who praised its storytelling, animation, and voice performances. However, it underperformed at the box office, grossing approximately $128.9 million worldwide against a budget estimated between $75 million and $147 million. For those interested in watching the film, “Transformers One” is available for streaming on Paramount+. Superman and Lois (The CW) Out of 5 Never Trust a Human Hearts Darryl: 4.45/5 Brian: 4.35/5 Summary In the penultimate episode of “Superman & Lois,” titled “To Live and Die Again,” the series sets the stage for a climactic finale. The episode features the return of Doomsday, now portrayed in a highly comic-accurate form, intensifying the threat to Superman and his family. The narrative delves into the aftermath of Superman's public revelation of his dual identity as Clark Kent, exploring the personal and societal ramifications of this disclosure. Additionally, Lois Lane receives a positive update regarding her battle with breast cancer, marking a significant moment in her character arc. The episode culminates in an emotional cliffhanger, setting up a high-stakes confrontation in the series finale. This installment effectively balances action and character development, paving the way for a compelling conclusion to the series. Dune: Prophecy (HBO Max) Out of 10 Burn in My Lights Darryl: 7.75/10 Brian: 7.1/10 Summary “Dune: Prophecy” is a prequel series set 10,000 years before the events of Frank Herbert's “Dune,” focusing on the origins of the Bene Gesserit Sisterhood. Here's a summary of the first two episodes: Episode 1: “The Hidden Hand” The series opens with Mother Superior Raquella Berto-Anirul (Cathy Tyson) leading the fledgling Sisterhood on Wallach IX. She entrusts Valya Harkonnen (Emily Watson) with the mission to expand and fortify the Sisterhood's influence. Valya, driven by her family's tarnished legacy, employs the Sisterhood's secretive breeding program and mental conditioning to manipulate political dynamics across the Imperium. A significant plot involves the arranged marriage between Princess Ynez Corrino (Sarah-Sofie Boussnina) and young noble Pruwet Richese (Charlie Hodson-Prior), orchestrated to stabilize the Imperial bloodline. However, the emergence of Desmond Hart (Travis Fimmel), a mysterious soldier with newfound powers from Arrakis, disrupts these plans. Desmond's actions culminate in the simultaneous deaths of Pruwet and Imperial Truthsayer Kasha Jinjo (Jihae), signaling a formidable threat to the Sisterhood's schemes. Episode 2: “Two Wolves” In the aftermath of the dual assassinations, Valya seeks to counter Desmond's menace. She travels to Salusa Secundus to interrogate Desmond, who openly admits to the killings, revealing his immunity to the Sisterhood's manipulative techniques like “The Voice.” Meanwhile, on Wallach IX, young acolyte Lila undergoes “The Agony,” a perilous ritual intended to unlock ancestral memories. During this process, Lila encounters the spirit of Raquella, who imparts cryptic warnings about impending dangers. The episode delves into the internal dynamics of the Sisterhood, highlighting the challenges Valya faces in consolidating power amid external threats and internal dissent. These episodes lay the groundwork for a complex narrative of political intrigue, mystical traditions, and the struggle for dominance within the Imperium. Arguably the single most celebrated science fiction novel of the 21st Century, Frank Herbert's Dune has long been a cultural phenomenon. Partly as a countercultural symbol thanks in part to some of its more mind-expanding themes, but mostly as a towering work of science fiction, with Herbert applying an almost textbook flavor to the original novel's many appendices to explore the ecology of this fictional world. A key piece of this involves answering the question of how human life as we know it could survive on a world that has virtually no moisture, let alone running water. Which brings us to the topic of this week's episode: the stillsuit.A stillsuit is worn by natives of Arrakis to preserve and recycle their own body's precious moisture, allowing them to last for longer periods in the open desert. When worn properly, it's a head to toe covering that recaptures everything from the moisture in your breath to basic perspiration to, um, other bodily functions, stores it in pockets, and allows you to drink it as necessary. It's a little gross, sure, but it's also an iconic piece of brainy sci-fi tech that seems like it would have solid grounding in the real world. But does it? You'll have to listen to the latest episode of Does it Fly? right here or check it out on our YouTube page to see what we found!SUGGESTED VIEWING We'll make this easy on you: to get the gist of what we're talking about this week, all you really need is Denis Villeneuve's two incredible sci-fi epics Dune (2021) and Dune: Part Two (2024). These are two of the best sci-fi movies of the last 25 years and they're as close to a perfect adaptation of Herbert's original novel as you're going to get.You might also have some nostalgia for David Lynch's somewhat bizarre 1984 Dune movie, which boasts a killer Toto score, some stunning visuals and production design, and Sting in pointy underwear. Otherwise, though…stick to the Villeneuve version. And if you want a look at roads not taken for the franchise, the documentary Jodorowsky's Dune, about an absolutely bonkers Dune movie that almost got made in the 1970s is as mind-expanding in its own way as Herbert's original book. Highly recommended.FURTHER READING Do you want to delve a little deeper into the facts, concepts, and stories Hakeem and Tamara referenced in today's episode? Of course you do! There are many, many books in the Dune series, as the series was continued long after original author Frank Herbert's death. But really, the first book is essential classic sci-fi and you can't go wrong with it. Its immediate two sequels, Dune Messiah and Children of Dune are also terrific and thought-provoking. After that, things get really weird (but no less awesome) with God Emperor of Dune, Heretics of Dune, and Chapterhouse: Dune. In short, read the first one no matter what. Read the entire first trilogy if you're digging it. And if you really want to get into the craziness, do all six. Skip everything else! How You Lose WaterStart with a baseline understanding of the function and percentage of water in your body. Not because we think this is something everyone is going to have to worry about as climate change continues to worsen and ravage us all or anything like that. No, certainly not. It's just good to know, right? RIGHT?!?MetamaterialsThe study of metamaterials is pretty vast, their potential applications are limitless, and their very existence is so cool that maybe it's best to try and point you to a resource that has a broad range of examples. Check ‘em out. ClassifiersHonestly, classifiers sound a little cooler and fancier than they actually are, but it IS helpful to think of stillsuits in those terms to some degree.SpacesuitsOn the other hand, spacesuits are actually cooler and fancier than you already think they are, and no less an authority than NASA has you covered on their workings and the different types here.WANT MORE FROM DOES IT FLY?Check out our episode on Netflix's The Witcher right here!Believe it or not, the original Star Wars was also influenced by Dune, and we covered the most iconic piece of tech from the franchise here.FOLLOW US!Stay in the loop! This week, like the sand-people of Arrakis and Beetlejuice audiences before us, we're afraid of worms (worms!) as guest Rachel Hadaway (of Rachel's Chart Chat on The People Are The Enemy) goes for a steeply inclined stroll with us to breathe the mountain air in beautiful Nelson, Washington as circle back to the coziness of the Steve Martin rom-com. It's 1987's Roxanne, directed by Fred Schepisi, written by Steve Martin, and starring Martin opposite Daryl Hannah, Shelley Duvall, Rick Rossovich, John Kapelos, Fred Willard, Michael J. Pollard, Damon Wayans and of course Nelson, British Columbia, which almost played itself! A landmark 80s film for Canadians seeing their country onscreen, north of the border it seems more beloved for its locations than its clever reworking of Cyrano de Bergerac for a modern context. But this is a funny movie with a romance that works, brought to us from the dusty DVR box of a long-time booster of our show who we were happy to finally bring on! Plus: As we put Halloween season behind us, Justin goes deep on the truly terrible Blade: Trinity. If you'd like to watch the movie before listening along, Roxanne is not currently available to stream in Canada, but can be found on Amazon Prime in America at the time of publication. On Play Retro today, we talk about the impact of Dune II! Dune II: The Building of a Dynasty (titled Dune II: Battle for Arrakis in Europe and Dune: The Battle for Arrakis for the North American Mega Drive/Genesis port, respectively) is a 1992 real-time strategy game developed by Westwood Studios and published by Virgin Games. It serves as the sequel to Dune, following a more traditional adventure strategy game format, that came out earlier the same year. Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.
