Prophecy Radio episode #129 brings Karen and Kristen back together again to discuss the next two chapters of Percy Jackson and the Chalice of the Gods. They also dip into a quick look at the brand new Percy Jackson cookbook, full of some truly unique recipes. New episodes of Prophecy Radio will air every other week. All discussions are PG-13. News and Updates (00:06:59) Check out this fun Reel for a better glimpse at the PJO premiere last year Check out Graci Kim's website to sign up for the Dreamslinger league. Karen got a copy of the Percy Jackson and the Olympians: The Official Cookbook as a late Christmas present. It's a perfect gift for Percy Jackson fans, especially if they like to throw parties for premiere weeks or in celebration of new books. Chalice of the Gods discussion (00:21:21) Let's start off our Chalice of the Gods discussion with chapter 28, "It Starts Raining Toys" Gary is more than a little shell-shocked at Percy's choices. Percy takes a moment to reflect on his mom's parents, and what it would be like if they had survived. Gary wants to know why Percy offered hugs instead of muscle. We are grateful that Gary has agreed that Percy has more life to live. Gary has one more thing to ask Percy before he excuses himself in a poof! Not everyone is like the gods, and Percy gives Gary hope. Annabeth and Grover congratulate Percy on his brilliant gamble. A hula hoop falls from the sky, which means Ganymede has a message for our trio. Zeus has invited his mom over, which means, the chalice needs to find its way home... now. Our favorite lines and moments We also get to discuss Chalice of the Gods chapter 29, "I Teeter on the Precipice of Mount Brunch" Percy hates brunch. Like HATES it. What the heck do gods eat for brunch, anyway? No, Percy cannot FEDEx the chalice back to Ganymede. Major bummer. Annabeth heads to school, while Percy and Grover head to the Empire State Building. Grover knows someone who can get them into the brunch, as long as they find the side door to the Olympus kitchens. Percy tries on Annabeth's Yankees cap of invisibility. It makes him feel fuzzy and weird. We brainstorm better names for a satyr dating app. Satyr-er leave a bit to be desired. Grover shakes his woolmaker to distract the Empire State security guards so Percy can sneak onto the elevator. Percy worries the chalice may have a "one ring" thing going on. Our favorite lines and moments Feedback (00:53:35) Maria Steinmetz reached out on Instagram to let us know she signed up for a class with Roshani Chokshi. We hope its as amazing as we imagine! Check out our Spotify playlists if you're looking for certain episodes that correlate with certain chapter discussions. Thanks for listening, and tune in next time for episode 130, where we'll discuss the latest Percy Jackson news, along with Chalice of the Gods chapters 30 & 31. Today the SibNerds are talking about Chapters 12 & Syl Anagist: Zero. We've. Learned. So. Much. Now we know how the stone eaters and guardians were created. We know what happened when Hoa and the other tuners were told to turn the Plutonic Engine on. We know how Father Earth responded to the puny humans stealing some of his core. And still, we saw how the more pacifist stone eaters are living at Core Point. There were some really sweet moments amidst all the revelations. Next time we'll be finishing the dang book! Inspired by recent book bans and challenges, Anna shares what she's learned about diversity in library collections from her classes. The SibNerds are revisiting their previous discussion around book bans and reevaluating the framing they put on that conversation. A large portion of this conversation talks about the importance of challenging the centering of whiteness and the default being white. We know that this can be an uncomfortable conversation, but we believe that it is critical in our own growth. We hope that this will help others process or begin their growth and understanding of folks who may be different. This section ended with both Essun and Nassun moving forward on new-found resolute paths—if they had any doubts, they don't anymore. Why does it matter who reviews our video games? That's today's big question, and my guest is Swapna Krishna. Swapna and I recorded this conversation in 2022, and as gaming and the entire media ecosystem changes and evolves and is pulled apart and merged, it's more important than ever to find reputable sources we not only trust, but who we have a connection with, and that's why representation matters so much. Swapna is a writer and journalist covering space, science, tech, and pop culture, and writes some of the most empathetic tech, and pop culture commentary on the web. She writes everywhere from Fast Company to StarWars.com, from StarTrek.com to Business Insider and the LA Times, Bitch Magazine, Bustle, Mental Floss, and more. Swapna has appeared on a bazillion excellent podcasts, she's been at ComicCon, she's the co-host of the Desi Geek Girls Podcast, and the host of PBS's show, Far Out. -----------Have feedback or questions? Kritika H. Rao, Shveta Thakrar, Roshani Chokshi, and Ram V are helping to create a new genre. They use elements of their Hindu backgrounds to write fantasy books primarily aimed at a Western marketplace. I talked with them about the challenge of drawing on a diverse religion of beliefs and gods that many Western readers and publishers might be unfamiliar with. Our panel discussion also turned out to be an opportunity for the authors to bond over their favorite deities, the Hindu comics they grew up reading, and the questions they've faced about who gets to tell their stories. Roshani Chokshi writes the middle-grade series, Aru Shah, and she's the author of The Star-Touched Queen trilogy of YA novels. Kritika H. Rao is the author of The Surviving Sky, which will be part of The Rages Trilogy. Shveta Thakrar is the author of Star Daughter and The Dream Runners. Ram V is a comic book writer, and the author of the graphic novel, The Many Deaths of Laila Starr. Today's episode is brought to you by HelloFresh. Roshani Chokshi is on the #ReadingWithYourKids #Podcast to celebrate "The Spirit Glass," Roshani tells us this book is a middle-grade novel drawing from Filipino mythology and folklore, at its core a ghost story perfect for spooky season. It explores the themes of grief and recognizing what's right in front of you to save you from the unknown. Chokshi explained how her personal experiences, including the loss of a pregnancy, influenced the book, emphasizing that incomplete grief and the fear of the unknown are universal experiences for both children and adults. The conversation delved into the impact of colonialism on Filipino culture and how these hidden stories become part of folklore and mythology. Chokshi also discussed the importance of fostering curiosity in children and how family discussions about hidden stories in literature can be enriching. She shared her experience of being part of the Rick Riordan Presents imprint and the impact it had on her career. The interview wrapped up with a playful discussion about her next creative project involving vultures named Pomp and Circumstance. Prophecy Radio episode #98 discusses Rick Riordan Presents' latest release: The Spirit Glass by Roshani Chokshi! We also catch you up on all the latest Rick Riordan news, including various upcoming releases like Serwa Boateng's Guide to Witchcraft and Mayhem, as well as Chalice of the Gods. This week, we also tackle The Kane Chronicles: The Red Pyramid chapter 21, which is our first introduction to Aunt Kitty. Hey, she looks kinda familiar!? New episodes of Prophecy Radio air weekly, and we keep our discussions PG-13. News and Updates (00:02:00) Don't forget to check out Karen on Seaweed Brain Podcast! Are you going to one of the Chalice of the Gods book tour stops? Read Riordan wants you to meet Flordeliza from The Spirit Glass. You can also read an exclusive excerpt from Roshani Chokshi's latest novel. Serwa Boateng's Guide to Witchcraft and Mayhem releases on September 12. Chalice of the Gods also releases on September 26, and we give you an update on our plans for discussing the book. Kristen also gives us an update on the strikes and…Taylor Swift!? The Spirit Glass by Roshani Chokshi (00:13:24) What is this book about? What did we think about the writing, and how does it compare to Aru Shah (the series)? You should definitely pick up The Last Tale of the Flower Bride if you liked this book. There are a lot of relatable themes in this book that we'll be discussing throughout this episode. We love a book with Graci Kim vibes! Okay, let's talk about Corazon Lopez, our hero for this adventure. Althea is awesome, but Emilio? He's the best dad EVER. How does Corazon compare to Aru Shah (the character)? Saso is undoubtedly the standout character in this book. Aunt Tina is super powerful and super suspicious. The Midnight Bridge market sounds like a spooky and amazing place to visit. You could say that Librarian Bulosan is a bit entian in nature. And then there's Leo (not that Leo!), who is super cute but definitely has some secrets of his own. Lastly, we have Flordeliza, who we'll have to talk more about later. Oh, and how could we forget to talk about the House!? The spoiler section starts at 00:38:57. Let's kick off this part by talking about the Library of Mirrors. Did you catch that Aru Shah reference? So we can blame mirrors for stealing our socks!? We get a proper quest for this adventure, and all seems right with the world. First stop? Visiting Mushu Tamatoa Bakunawa. We really loved how Corazon decided what was a fair trade for his blessing. Um, the manananggal is terrifying but also kind of cool? Next up, we visit the diwata and meet the Marias. The mystery around Leo deepens! Did the Marias purposefully send Corazon into danger, and were their intentions nefarious? Kristen totally knew that Corazon's dress was a clue to what was going on. We backtrack a little bit to talk about Flordeliza's backstory. Padre Francisco was, hands down, the worst person in this book. Did you guess the Leo reveal!? Okay, let's talk about the end of this book now. Aunt Tina is WHO!? The House ended up being so much more important than we thought. Ohhhhh, that's how the soul key was formed. This book really is about grief and acceptance. Saso just needs something to fight against! Would we like a sequel to this story? The Kane Chronicles: The Red Pyramid discussion (01:20:14) This week, we're reading The Red Pyramid chapter 21. You do NOT want to mess with the Set animal. How does Carter's falcon eyesight work and what does it mean? Is there something to the fact that Carter's abilities are more physical? What do we think about Set and Set's animal being described as evil? Cats always land on their feet, and so do cat goddesses! It's kind of cool there are consequences to turning into birds too often. We love seeing the growth between Carter and Sadie! There's lots of aunts in this week's discussion! Being able to store stuff in the Duat seems highly convenient! Did you remember the bit about the locker from the beginning of the book? This was a well-balanced chapter! Thanks for listening, and tune in next time for episode 99, where we'll discuss The Red Pyramid chapter 22 before doing some predictions for the rest of the book! This episode's hosts are: Karen Rought and Kristen Kranz. Each episode, our Prophecy Radio hosts and their guests will keep you up to date on the latest information coming out of Camp Half-Blood, including upcoming books and adaptation news, discuss a topic of choice, and do a chapter by chapter reread of the Percy Jackson series. Prophecy Radio episode #97 does a Deep Dive of the Egyptian god Horus. We also catch you up on all the latest Rick Riordan news, including some information about a couple characters we'll meet in The Spirit Glass by Roshani Chokshi, as well as the latest from the WGA/SAG-AFTRA strikes. This week, we also tackle The Kane Chronicles: The Red Pyramid chapter 20, where we get to meet the beautiful goddess Nut. New episodes of Prophecy Radio air weekly, and we keep our discussions PG-13. News and Updates (00:06:05) You should definitely check out this week's episode of Seaweed Brain Podcast. Don't forget to check the CBCC Etsy store for some signed John Rocco prints. Roseanne A. Brown's A Song of Wraiths and Ruin made Paste Magazine's list of 10 of the best YA fantasies of all time. Read Riordan wants us to meet both Leo and Aunt Tina from The Spirit Glass. We discuss a now-deleted tweet from @UpdatesPercy about how the cancellation of The Spiderwick Chronicles and Disney+ shouldn't affect the Percy Jackson show. We also give you the latest from the WGA regarding the August 22 negotiations. Deadline also reports on AMPTP's release of the August 11 proposal. The Hollywood Reporter also reports that AMPTP hired a new crisis PR firm. Deep Dive: Horus (00:22:37) There were a lot of different versions of Horus, and he had a lot of different names! This makes sense because Ancient Egypt lasted about twice as long as Ancient Greece. You might've already known he was the falcon god, but do you know which of his eyes represents the moon and which represents the sun? Do you know, specifically, what kind of falcon Horus turns into? The family dynamics for any god will be super interesting! How was Horus conceived? We really earn our PG-13 rating with our discussion of Set and Horus' battle for dominance. Do you know what the Egyptians considered the sixth sense? Even if you don't know much about Egyptian mythology, you've probably seen the eye of Horus once or twice in your life. Again: The family dynamics of gods are SUPER WEIRD. Do you know which god the Greeks associated with Horus? Horus was a BIG deal for the pharaohs of Ancient Egypt. And his fight with Set was extremely symbolic. The Festival of Victory was kind of barbaric. Set has a lot of sacred and symbolic animals. Like, A LOT. Sources: Britannica.com EgyptianMuseum.org BeliefMap.org Medium.com Study.com Wikipedia.org The Kane Chronicles: The Red Pyramid discussion (00:42:45) This week, we discuss The Red Pyramid chapter 20. Why was Sadie able to change the shape of her ba? And why is everyone a chicken!? Why does this mysterious boy only visit Sadie? Shame on everyone who didn't remind Karen about the Prophecy Count! Nut looks awesome, and she reminds us of another goddess we saw recently. Would you try sahlab? What kind of relationship do Nut and Isis have? For a goddess, nut is kind of chill, which is a relief considering Sadie's…personality quirks. We get into a philosophical discussion about chaos and order. Why couldn't Nut just TELL Sadie what happened when she descended to earth? Will Set ever become an ally? We got so much information in this chapter! Thanks for listening, and tune in next time for episode 98, where we'll discuss The Spirit Glass by Roshani Chokshi before jumping into The Red Pyramid chapter 21! This episode's hosts are: Karen Rought and Kristen Kranz. Prophecy Radio episode #96 celebrates Percy Jackson's birthday with some great fanart, awesome recipes, and a few fun quizzes. How did you celebrate!? We also catch you up on all the latest Rick Riordan news, including some great articles that hint at what's to come in Serwa Boateng's Guide to Witchcraft and Mayhem, The Spirit Glass, and even Chalice of the Gods. This week, we also tackle The Kane Chronicles: The Red Pyramid chapter 19 and get to experience a picnic in the sky. New episodes of Prophecy Radio air weekly, and we keep our discussions PG-13. News and Updates (00:01:04) We remind you that we won't be discussing any news about the forthcoming Disney+ show until the WGA/SAG-AFTRA strikes are over. Happy birthday, Dior Goodjohn! It's time to meet Funtunfunefu-Denkyemfunefu from Serwa Boateng's Guide to Witchcraft and Mayhem by Roseanne A. Brown. And not to be left out, we also talk about Corazon from the upcoming The Spirit Glass by Roshani Chokshi. Read Riordan also had a nice little check-in with the goddess Iris, and we got some cool insight into what will happen in Chalice of the Gods. We also now have a release date for the Lightning Thief collector's edition. Lastly, we talk about AI and art after seeing a tweet on the topic from Victo Ngai. Happy birthday, Percy Jackson! (00:20:13) You can make some awesome Percy Jackson-inspired cupcakes like we did! We also have some other ideas for things you can bake, like these cookies or your own ambrosia/nectar. Have you listened to the Percy Jackson musical soundtrack lately? The Percy Jackson coloring book is always a good way to pass the time. There are so many things you can throw on in the background while you color, like, oh, a certain podcast? Or maybe you want to listen the audiobooks! Kristen recommends them. If you can travel, you should totally do a Percy Jackson tour of NYC. It's completely normal to expect presents for someone else's birthday, right? We also go through some of the best artwork we saw on Percy Jackson's birthday, like this polaroid and cute little Nico/Percy scene from Soia. Dududrigs drew a picture of Percy attending Blue Beetle for his birthday. And even the Empire State Building got in on the action. Thanks to Camp Half-Blood Updates, we saw this beautiful illustration of older and younger Percy from @starsarekind. Hellredsky also drew a picture of Percy covered in icing. And then there was this beautiful illustration of the trio from @182tweets. We finish up Percy's birthday by taking a couple of quizzes. Based on your work habits, which god are you descended from? Based on your college experience, which demigod are you? The Kane Chronicles: The Red Pyramid discussion (01:04:48) This week, we're discussing The Red Pyramid chapter 19. It's pretty cool that the entirety of the Louvre is a portal. Carter lost his sword, and this is such a foreign concept to us. If you already lost your sword, WHY WOULD YOU THROW YOUR WAND? Bast very helpfully throws the kids through the portal. We discuss the fact that the Washington Monument is the default portal in the U.S. Why can't anyone read Thoth's book? Is it because it's too dangerous? For some reason Bast can't understand why the kids prefer grilled cheese over Friskies. Did you know what the shape of an obelisk represented? Bast finally tells us more about her time being trapped in the obelisk, and honestly, it sounds horrible. Do we really think the monster didn't escape? Sadie finally tells Carter about what Iskandar said. If their parents weren't trying to release Bast, what were they trying to do!? We love Big Brother Carter. Feedback (01:25:46) Ian shares how he celebrated Percy's birthday with his kids. Robert makes us crave some blue smoothies. And Rachel shows off her awesome art skills! Thank you, Sarwat, for listening to our discussion of your book and being so supportive of the podcast! JustAMediaGuy wants an RRP crossover as badly as we do. Thanks for listening, and tune in next time for episode 97, where we'll do a Deep Dive on Horus before jumping into The Red Pyramid chapter 20! This episode's hosts are: Karen Rought and Kristen Kranz. Prophecy Radio episode #92 catches you up on all the latest Rick Riordan news, from upcoming Rick Riordan Presents books like Fury of the Dragon Goddess to the current WGA/SAG-AFTRA strikes and what they mean for the Percy Jackson and the Olympians series on Disney+. This week, we're also talking about The Kane Chronicles: The Red Pyramid by tackling chapter 16, in which Zia embraces the singed-eyebrow look. New episodes of Prophecy Radio air weekly, and we keep our discussions PG-13. News and Updates (00:06:26) Happy birthday, Annabeth Chase! Fury of the Dragon Goddess by Sarwat Chadda releases on August 1. Pre-order it here. Make sure you check out the virtual launch event for the book! Read Riordan has an article so you can refresh your memory on City of the Plague God. If you want play D&D with Sarwat Chadda, you can learn all the details here. You can also catch up with Daoud and meet Dumuzi, thanks to Read Riordan. Sarwat had a lot of wonderful things to say about being a part of the Rick Riordan Presents family. The Spirit Glass by Roshani Chokshi got a starred review from Publisher's Weekly. Rick Riordan and Mark Oshiro share their favorite recent reads. Be sure to check out the Boston Book Festival, where Rick will be a keynote speaker this year. Read Riordan is hitting it out of the park with this Chalice of the Gods articles, including the one about the New Rome University course guide. We have SO. MANY. IDEAS. Would you want John Rocco to do a special edition cover for Chalice of the Gods so it could match your original series? Someone needs to update this Percy Jackson guide to the Met Museum. Don't expect to see Nico and Bianca in Percy Jackson and the Olympians season 1. We're so happy Glynn Turman got to pick the horse he's working with on the show. Let's talk about Percy Jackson at San Diego Comic-Con 2023. Did you catch the new Percy Jackson poster and SDCC bag? Looks like there's a chance of Percy Jackson on Saturday. We get to see a slightly new image of the trio. And here's a picture of the Disney Books poster at SDCC 2023. Kristen breaks down new information about the WGA and SAG-AFTRA strikes, plus what it means for us at the podcast. Huge thank you to Mel for asking us to go into detail about all of this! You can find the SAG-AFTRA strike rules on Variety. The biggest one to keep in mind is that if the studio is asking you to promote something, DON'T DO IT. Yes, the podcast will keep covering all the Percy Jackson and the Olympians news because we are just fans talking about what we love. What's the future of these strikes? D.B. Woodside had some really important information to share about why SAG is striking. What does all this mean for Percy Jackson and the Olympians? Why isn't Rick saying much about the show? What projects are on hold and which ones can he still work on? Why wasn't Rick Riordan at Comic-Con? We'll keep you updated with more information once it becomes available! Kane Chronicles: The Red Pyramid discussion (01:08:50) This week, we're reading The Red Pyramid chapter 16. Put us down for not wanting to be woken up the way Zia wakes Sadie. Why didn't Carter sleep well? How do we get some bottled Thoth Water? That tongue tattoo was pretty cool. Either do what Zia tells you to…or die. What are the magicians' specialties and which can we unanimously agree is a no-go for us? There are some really great moments while Carter and Sadie learn to bring hierglyphs to life with magic. We're so happy we learned about Luxor/Thebes in our last episode. How strong is Zia, exactly? It's time to duel, and it definitely does not go according to plan. We learn a little bit more about the Kanes' familial background. Iskandar is dead, and even though we saw this coming, it's still sad. It also spells major trouble for the Kanes. Zia's willing to give them a five-minute head start, and that's about as good as it's going to get. Feedback (01:28:42) Tim writes in with a little What If… for The Last Olympian. Caoimhe also catches us up on her reactions to the last few episodes and gives us a great idea for a future one. It seems Bobbi is as big of a fan of Hapshetsut as we are. Thanks for listening, and tune in next time for episode 93, in which we'll discuss City of the Plague God by Sarwat Chadda, and then read The Red Pyramid chapter 17! This episode's hosts are: Karen Rought and Kristen Kranz. According to Variety, Walker Scobell joined the cast of an upcoming movie! Rick Riordan answered a question on Goodreads about fans drawing white Annabeth. The Kane Chronicles: The Red Pyramid discussion (00:53:31) This week, we're reading The Red Pyramid chapter 10! If we could put out a cat signal, we would sleep in a pile of cats whenever we're sad. They're heading toward Central Park, and the entrance to the Underworld is RIGHT THERE. Bast isn't really good at making people feel calm. It's kind of weird to think your clothes could still carry residual life auras. The concept of good vs. evil and order vs. chaos is so interesting. Bast's combat magic is pretty epic. And now we want to watch Pacific Rim. If you're in an area with scorpions…be careful. Let's learn more about Serqet! Do you know the temple in the Met that Bast referenced in this chapter? Feedback (01:16:31) Friend of the Podcast Ian Davies finished TSATS and started listening to our discussion episode! Thank you for tuning into Prophecy Radio, Shannon, and happy early birthday! We also discuss all the latest Riordanverse news, including the updated covers for The Lightning Thief, The Lightning Thief: The Graphic Novel, and Camp Half-Blood Confidential. Lastly, we continue our journey through The Kane Chronicles with The Red Pyramid chapter 9! Remember, we're keeping this discussion spoiler-free! You can read Karen's The Sun and the Star book review right here on Subjectify. AJ Beckles is the solo narrator for the book. Did you know that The Titan's Curse came out on May 1, 2007? We discuss the updated covers for The Lightning Thief, The Lightning Thief: The Graphic Novel, and Camp Half-Blood Confidential. The next book from Rick Riordan Presents will be The Last Canto of Dead by Daniel José Older, out May 16. Congratulations to Daniel for being nominated for a Locus Award for Ballad & Dagger. Did you see that Velinxi was the surprise artist for the May Rainbow Crate, which features The Sun and the Star? Kristen gives us a great breakdown of the WGA on strike and what this means for all of Rick's adaptation projects. Jake Abel also had some thoughts on the subject! We'll keep you up to date on the strike going forward! The Sun and the Star book tour — Boston (00:33:34) Karen details her night at the Boston tour stop! Go follow Liam T. Crowley on Twitter if you haven't already. It was awesome seeing Rick and Mark BUT KAREN GOT TO SEE BECKY. We are not going to include the interview in this week's episode for some very valid reasons, and we promise the wait will be worth it! Karen almost walked out on stage on accident! And she almost didn't get her signed copy! Mark and Rick were both fantastic, but tbh Steph Lurie stole the show. This show was so amazing, and the energy levels never dropped, from start to finish. Why did Rick choose Mark to co-write this book with him? Can you guess the title of Mark's first book, which they wrote when they were nine? Mark drew the map that ended up on the endpapers, and the original version is hilarious and amazing. They were each asked which part of the book was their favorite. Becky came out on stage, and the crowd went wild! Karen teases the interview for the first time, but definitely not the last. Go read books from Rick Riordan Presents! Everyone loves Roshani Chokshi, as they should!! Don't forget that there are still graphic novels of Rick's books coming out! Everyone is super excited for the Kane Chronicles movie, and that made us so happy! We discuss the possibility that the Kane Chronicles movie might not get made (but we agree with Rick that we're guardedly optimistic it will!). What about the Daughter of the Deep movie adaptation? Unsurprisingly, everyone is super, super excited about the Percy Jackson and the Olympians show on Disney+. Rick said his first reaction to seeing the principal photography was relief. Rick has learned so much from Mark's writing! Mark also got to talk about all of their books that they've published! Could you ever write the last line of a book first? How long has Rick known that Nico was gay? Prophecy Radio totally got a name drop during the event! You'd be surprised which is Mark's favorite dinosaur. Which gods would be their parents? Knowing which characters would be a Swiftie is apparently a big deal. Karen teases the interview once again, but it's going to be totally worth it! Did you see the selfie from the Boston tour stop? Stay tuned for our upcoming giveaway! The Kane Chronicles: The Red Pyramid (01:30:00) This week, we're reading The Red Pyramid chapter 9. Who could be sabotaging the House and the kids? Wouldn't it be amazing to have a cat network? Bast is pretty spectacular, and we can't wait to see more of her. Who are the Carriers, and what is their purpose? We learn a little bit more about Bast and how her powers work. Does the Mist exist in this world, or is it something else? What's going on with Bast's role in the Kane siblings' mother's death? Feedback (01:46:36) Thank you for listening to the show, Teddy, and Karen is so sorry she couldn't meet you! Hope you had fun at the show, Elizabeth! And thank you to everyone else for the kind words about interviewing Rick and Mark! LJ wrote in with some wild theories about The Sun and the Star. We rectify a major mistake and read out Henry's The Sun and the Star theory. TJ writes in with some kind words about the podcast and asks us a very important question, which is accompanied by a super cute picture. Crystal is super excited for The Sun and the Star, and that makes us so happy! Thanks for listening, and tune in next time for episode 83, where we'll talk about The Sun and the Star (with spoiler-free AND spoiler-filled sections), plus an interview with Rick Riordan and Mark Oshiro. This episode's hosts are: Karen Rought and Kristen Kranz. Prophecy Radio episode #74 dives into Egyptian mythology for the first time! We tackle some of the most important gods in the pantheon so we can be a little more familiar with the subject ahead of our Kane Chronicles discussion. As always, we also catch you up on all the latest Riordanverse news, including the official synopsis for The Spirit Glass by Roshani Chokshi, as well as the dates for Rick Riordan and Mark Oshiro's in-person The Sun and the Star book tour. Lastly, we kick off our Kane Chronicles read with The Red Pyramid chapter 1. Remember, we're keeping this discussion spoiler-free! New episodes of Prophecy Radio air weekly, and all ages are welcome to tune in. News and updates (00:06:48) Are we going to change the name of our podcast? Spoiler alert: No. If you're interested in Kristen's favorite Best Picture nominees for the 2023 Oscars, be sure to read her article! And don't forget to read Nichole's article about Everything Everywhere All at Once. Becky has been reading along to Percy Jackson and the Chalice of the Gods 50 pages at a time, and it's really channeling the kids from the show. Read Riordan gave us the official synopsis for The Spirit Glass by Roshani Chokshi, as well as an exclusive look at Rick's introduction to the book. If we weren't already excited for this one, Rick's high praise definitely would've done the trick. Rick also posted a March 9 blog post in which he gave us the dates for his The Sun and the Star book tour with Mark Oshiro. Yes, the rumors are true—Karen will be at the Boston stop! Keep an eye on Rick and Mark's Twitter for when the NYC tickets go live. These two will also be at the ALA conference in Chicago, which takes place June 22-27. This is for librarians, though, so it's pretty expensive if you're not a member! Introducing the Egyptian gods (00:18:32) This is going to be a brief overview because there are literally hundreds of gods we could talk about. Karen got her list from Britannica. Starting off with Osiris, did you know he used to be a king? Getting reassembled doesn't sound too fun, but at least it came with a promotion. But was he eternally moldy? Isis was Osiris' wife and embodied the traditional virtues of a wife and mother. She also had a lot to do with mourning and funeral rites. Even though she sounds a bit like Hera, she was more closely identified with Aphrodite. And her depictions with her son, Horus, could've influenced depictions of Mary with Jesus. Next up is Horus, the sky god, who was associated with war and hunting. So many of the Egyptians gods were shown as animals or as humans with the head of an animal. Imagine being raised to avenge your father's murder. No pressure! Did you know that the moon is actually Horus' left eye? Set is definitely NOT the god of desserts. We wonder what kind of mythical creature he was supposed to be. Have you heard of Ptah before? What about his wife, Sekhmet, or his son, Nefertem? Ra, the sun god, is one of the most well-known Egyptian gods, and he sounds a little like Apollo. Is there a reason why Ra sailed in a boat and Apollo drove a chariot? We definitely get a lesson on how Amun-Ra came to prominence. Who would win a fight, Amun-Ra or Apollo? How does Hathor differ from Isis? It kind of makes sense that Hathor was associated with cows. Next up is Anubis, which is another very well-known Egyptian god. Any fans of The Mummy here!? A lot of the gods are associated with funerary rites. Everybody gets a patron god, even embalmers! Thoth is the scribe of the gods, and we get Hermes vibes from him. He also has the very important job of weighing the hearts of the deceased. Have you heard of the goddess Bast? Even though she used to be associated with wild cats, she's since taken the likeness of a domestic cat. Of course Kristen has a West Wing story for this. It makes sense she was associated with Artemis, the hunter goddess. The Kane Chronicles: The Red Pyramid (00:41:49) This week, we're reading The Red Pyramid chapter 1. Kristen and Karen decide to share their dreams even though it has nothing to do with the book. This opening chapter really sets up the dynamic between Carter, Sadie, and their dad, plus makes you ask a lot of questions. It also totally gives us some Percy Jackson vibes thanks to the warning in the beginning. Does Kristen have any guesses as to what the item in the locker could possibly be? Carter and Sadie are very different, and they hardly see each other, so they're not even really friends. Do Carter's grandparents not like him either? We can't wait for the Netflix adaptation of this book! Muffin HAS to be important, right!? Guess which Kane sibling we relate to most? Guess what? Karen has totally seen Cleopatra's Needle in person! Does Kristen have any idea what's going on with their dad? What do we think of the siblings so far? Feedback (01:11:01) Caoimhe writes in to remind us that Hecate is associated with The Mist. She also gives us a great idea for a future episode of the show. We love hearing from our listeners! Henry also wrote in to bring up a couple fantastic points. Do we think they'll show Hestia in Percy Jackson and the Olympians season 1? Which book does Henry like the least? What about the most? Favorite character? How do we feel about a Percy Jackson audio drama? Katherine writes in to talk about why she loves Titan's Curse. Thanks for listening, and tune in next time for episode 75, where we'll discuss how Greek and Egyptian mythology may have influenced each other before tackling The Red Pyramid chapter 2. This episode's hosts are: Karen Rought and Kristen Kranz. Prophecy Radio episode #73 looks back on our re-read of Percy Jackson and the Olympians. Which book is our favorite? Did any of our opinions change now that we're older and wiser? We also tackle all the latest Riordanverse news, including more information about Percy Jackson and the Chalice of the Gods and some books from a few Rick Riordan Presents authors we think you might like. New episodes of Prophecy Radio air weekly, and all ages are welcome to tune in. News and updates (00:02:59) We're back to talk about Percy Jackson and the Chalice of the Gods because Read Riordan had a little teaser about what the chickens will get up to in this story. Rick also wrote a blog on February 24 that gave us some information about the UK and international additions, as well as signed copies. We've heard variations of his answer before, but we discuss the latest bit of information regarding whether there will be more Percy Jackson books after Chalice of the Gods. If you love Magnus Chase and Alex Fierro, then Read Riordan has the article for you! Karen wrote a book review for The Last Tale of the Flower Bride by Roshani Chokshi, so be sure to check that out. And don't forget that Lucha of the Night Forest by Tehlor Kay Mejia and Into the Light by Mark Oshiro both come out soon! Percy Jackson and the Olympians Retrospective (00:13:16) Now that we've finished all five books in the Percy Jackson and the Olympians series, we're doing a bit of a retrospective to see how we feel about them overall. Even though we all remember what happens in The Lightning Thief, we revisit it for reasons. This book is so good at introducing us to this world and the characters that occupy it. Can you imagine if someone was like nah, we don't need anymore books about Percy Jackson? These kids were SO YOUNG, and things just keep getting darker as they grow up. Moving on to Sea of Monsters, it's apparent that this book laid a lot of groundwork for character development. It was nice to see more Clarisse, but this book also brought us Tyson!!! He's so genuine and loveable. He was really the perfect character to teach Percy and Annabeth a valuable lesson. As we start talking about Titan's Curse, we confess which books are our least favorites (but we swear we still love them!). Annabeth is gone for SO LONG in this book. The Hunters of Artemis are so iconic, and it's pretty cool to meet and get to know Artemis better. On a scale from approachable to aloof, where do all of the gods land? We get to say hello to Nico, but we also have to say goodbye to Bianca. Battle of the Labyrinth is such a dense book because there's so much going on. We also have to balance a lot of characters in this book, both new and old. Nico has a lot of feelings, and we can't say we blame him. The Labyrinth is a character in and of itself. That battle at Camp Half-Blood was a lot more significant than we first realized. Now we're onto the The Last Olympian There's a lot of Backstory! in this book. We kind of love that the Battle of Manhattan takes up so much room. That final confrontation is iconic, and so is Percy's decision to turn down immortality. Btw, Percabeth is a go. All right, what's our favorite book, and why? It's difficult choosing a favorite character, but we've got some pretty solid options. There are so many iconic moments from the books, and we can't wait to see them in the show. We should've totally planned to pick out our favorite creatures/monsters, too. We have a lot of favorite quotes to choose from, and it was tough to decide. This time, we stayed away from Percabeth quotes when we could, since we just talked about them in the last episode. This is yet another reminder that Rick is SO good at first lines. Now that we've really dissected these books, did we have any changes of heart? Did anything surprise us? Lastly, what are we looking forward to seeing the most when we finally get to Heroes of Olympus? Feedback (01:29:51) Nicolaas writes in to give us his answers to all our same questions. Karen's in the hot seat…is she gonna be replaced!? Thanks for listening, and tune in next time for episode 74, where we'll do an overview of the Egyptian gods before tackling The Red Pyramid chapter 1. This episode's hosts are: Karen Rought and Kristen Kranz. Roshani Chokshi joins us to discuss The Last Tale of the Flower Bride (Morrow/HarperCollins, Feb. 14), “A singular, unforgettable tale of love and magic” (starred review). Then our editors join with their reading recommendations for the week.
Prophecy Radio episode #70 wonders what if certain events in Percy Jackson and the Last Olympain were changed? How would it affect the rest of the book, and the series as a whole? Plus, we talk about all the latest news in the Riordanverse, including the Spirit Glass by Roshani Chokshi cover reveal, as well as read and discuss “Percy Jackson and the Singer of Apollo.” We might be done reading Percy Jackson and the Olympians now, but we've still got plenty to discuss before we move onto The Red Pyramid (Kane Chronicles #1). New episodes of Prophecy Radio air weekly, and all ages are welcome to tune in. News and updates (00:02:07) Don't forget that we're giving away THREE copies of J. Maya's debut Ep, Poetic License. Visit us on Instagram and Twitter, and then follow the instructions to enter. Jelena Milinkovic has been cast as the Nereid. Did you catch the Spirit Glass by Roshani Chokshi interview, cover reveal, and excerpt!? Winston Chu vs. the Whimsies by Stacey Lee is now out in the world! Read an excerpt and meet Mr. Pang. Oh, and you can also go read Karen's spoiler-free Winston Chu vs. the Whimsies book review to see if it's something you'd also enjoy! Becky dashes our hopes of getting a Percy Jackson video game anytime soon. What If… season 5: Percy Jackson and the Last Olympian (00:14:56) It's yet again time for another rendition of What If…, where we change one small aspect of the Percy Jackson universe and see how it would affect the rest of the story. Karen's first suggestion isn't very clever, but it's definitely an interesting alternate universe to consider. What if…Kronos had won!? Would the trio even still be alive? Would Hades side with Kronos, or would he just hole up in the Underworld? And what about the rest of the gods? Which ones would be on Kronos' side, which would go into hiding, and which would play double agents? What does the collapse of Western Civilization look like? There's probably a book for that. Would another hero rise in order to kill Kronos? Kristen wonders what if…someone other than Beckendorf had accompanied Percy to the Princess Andromeda? Who would've gone instead, and why is Clarisse such a perfect answer? How would Beckendorf still being alive affected the Battle of Olympus? Would Silena's arc have played out any differently? Rachel writes in to ask what if…Beckendorf had survived the explosion? Kristen's idea gave Karen goosebumps, and now we're kind of bummed it didn't happen that way! Karen was wondering about Silena, too. What if…Silena had been able to convince Clarisse to leave camp? Would she have survived the drakon, and if so, would the others have forgiven her if she hadn't made the ultimate sacrifice? What would her life had been like after that? Would Clarisse have been her friend still? Would Clarisse have even been able to defeat the drakon without the anger over Silena's death that caused the Blessing of Ares? Now Kristen wants to know what if…Percy didn't take a dip in the River Styx? How much would this have changed his relationship with Annabeth? Karen is an optimist and thinks it wouldn't have changed anything. Would more people have died if Percy wasn't invincible? What if…Will Solace had died during the Battle of Manhattan? We've decided Nico and Will still would've been boyfriends forever. What if…Ethan Nakamura had changed sides? How would this have changed the final scene? Would he have played double agent? Rachel writes in to ask what would have happened if Percy did become a god, and our first question is…what would he have been the god of!? Is there any reality in which this could've happened? What other requests could Percy have made? We have SO many cool ideas that would've really shaken up the series. Krose13_99 wants to know what would have happened if the Ares cabin had been there for the whole fight? “Percy Jackson and the Singer of Apollo” (00:57:23) Next up, we're reading a short story that takes place after the events of The Last Olympian. Rick sure does know how to hook you with a first line. What a visual! We're definitely curious to learn more about Juniper and the other dryads and nature spirits. Why is Grover suggesting to pin a tail on the human!? Apollo has a very specific look, and we know exactly what to picture when he's first described. The Chryseae Celedones are super interesting…and very dangerous. We need a whole album of songs Apollo would sing. Isn't it cool that we recognized Apollo's lyre from the time we did the Deep Dive on Hermes? Percy controls the Mist here, and it's kind of a big deal!! Grover is not so great at controlling the magic of the lyre, though. Why didn't anyone tell Percy that the celedon could turn into a bird!? Blackjack is too busy looking for a girlfriend to help out. About when does this short story take place in the chronological timeline? It's a good thing Percy didn't lose more than his pants. Annabeth continues to be Percy's anchor, and we love it so much! Percy is brilliant, and his plan truly is inspired. So much for getting any kind of reward, but at least they didn't have to listen to Apollo sing. Feedback (01:20:55) Nyklaus writes in while we're recording to give us some more What If scenarios. Thanks for listening, and tune in next time for episode 71, where we'll tackle Percabeth's arc throughout Percy Jackson and the Olympians, plus discuss “Percy Jackson and the Staff of Hermes.” This episode's hosts are: Karen Rought and Kristen Kranz. Breaking the Glass Slipper: Women in science fiction, fantasy, and horror
We all know that the original versions of fairy tales are so much darker than the sanitised ones that got handed down to us by the moralistic Victorians. Some authors choose to create a story in a fairytale setting that is as brutal as the original tales themselves. But what about a tale that tries […] The post Loving monsters – with Roshani Chokshi first appeared on Breaking the Glass Slipper.

Prophecy Radio episode #64 takes a look ahead at all the projects we know are coming up in 2023, as well as our goals for the year as a podcast! This week, we're skipping the news since we're recording ahead of time, and we'll catch up on that in a couple weeks. But don't worry! We're still going to reread and discuss Percy Jackson and the Last Olympian chapter 18. New episodes of Prophecy Radio air weekly, and all ages are welcome to tune in. Looking ahead to 2023 (00:02:07) On January 10, The Sword of Hades will be re-released with a The Sun and the Star sneak peek. Are you going to pre-order it? One of the biggest books to come out this year will be The Sun and the Star: A Nico di Angelo Adventure by Rick Riordan and Mark Oshiro, which will release on May 2. Here's everything we know about The Sun and the Star so far. We speculate what we might get when we read Chalice of the Gods, which comes out on September 26. And let's not forget the Rick Riordan Presents imprint! What books can we look forward to in 2023? First up on the list is Winston Chu vs. the Whimsies by Stacey Lee, who will be releasing her first book under RRP. We loved Ballad & Dagger, so it should come as no surprise that Last Canto of the Dead by Daniel José Older is at the top of our lists for 2023. Next up, we have The Last Fallen Realm by Graci Kim, which will wrap up the Gifted Clans series. Roshani Chokshi is writing another book for RRP, this time about Filipino mythology! Obviously we can't wait for the second book in the Serwa Boateng series by Roseanne A. Brown. And maybe it won't be the last! We really need to read City of the Plague God by Sarwat Chadda…if only so we can read Fury of the Dragon Goddess. This fall, we can also expect Pahua and the Dragon's Secret by Lori M. Lee to hit store shelves. Moko Magic by Tracey Baptiste also promises to be great, and we wonder if there will be any similarities to Ballad & Dagger. And even though we haven't covered the books yet on the podcast, we're excited for the next book in the Shadow Bruja series by J.C. Cervantes. Many of the Rick Riordan Presents authors have OTHER books coming out outside of the imprint. Which ones are we most looking forward to? First up, Roshani Chokshi gives us a Valentine's Day treat with The Last Tale of the Flower Bride. And then there's Tehlor Kay Mejia's Lucha of the Night Forest, out on March 21. And then there's Into the Light by Mark Oshiro, which has mushrooms on the cover, so you know it's going to be cool. What announcements for Percy Jackson and the Olympians do we think we'll get in 2023? They have to tell us who Zeus and Poseidon are eventually, right?? Could we get a trailer by the end of the year? Will Percy Jackson attend SDCC? Will they be at D23 again? What if they did monster reveals!? Make sure you check out Aryan's show on Paramount+, Adventures in Wonder Park. When could we expect a season 2 greenlight? As far as the Red Pyramid film coming to Netflix, we can probably expect the script to be finished. But we know it's not coming out in 2023, so we need to be patient! What about a director? Or any casting announcements? What's Prophecy Radio hoping to accomplish next year? We want to bring as many exclusives to you as we possibly can! But we're super excited to start The Kane Chronicles. Percy Jackson and the Last Olympian (00:54:52) We're talking about The Last Olympian chapter 18. How can Clarisse survive being turned into a block of ice? Chiron standing in between Kronos and Mount Olympus is pretty badass. Annabeth gave it a good old college try, but it just wasn't enough. How could you not LOVE AND RESPECT Nico di Angelo until the ends of the Earth after this scene?? Seeing Demeter and Persephone in action was pretty cool. And speaking of badasses—Paul and Sally can totally handle their own! Why does Ethan Nakamura have such a place of honor amongst Kronos' army? We need more fanart from the Battle of Manhattan! Feedback (01:19:49) A positive guy says he's really looking forward to Serwa Boateng's Guide to Witchcraft and Mayhem and Fury of the Dragon Goddess. Meanwhile, Phoebe's got her heart set on The Sun and the Star. Thanks for listening, and tune in next time for episode 65, where we'll discuss the Lightning Thief illustrated edition, as well as the graphic novel! This episode's hosts are: Karen Rought and Kristen Kranz. Prophecy Radio episode #63 takes a look back on the last year to reminisce about all the announcements we witnessed and all we've accomplished in 2022! We also talk about the most recent news in the Riordanverse, including the livestream and the winner of our art giveaway, as well as reread and discuss Percy Jackson and the Last Olympian chapter 17. We let you know what kind of content to expect from us in the coming weeks. Shoutout to @JessycaJill, who won our art giveaway, and to @Hellredsky, for working with us on that! Graci Kim's tweet from the other day was bittersweet, and we take a moment to recognize all she's accomplished. Read Riordan also gave us some tips for how to throw a Camp Half-Blood-themed holiday party. End of the year round-up and reflection (00:10:26) Once again we really love that we switched over to one chapter an episode. We're very proud of our episode titles, but which ones are our favorites? What's the most interesting thing we learned in our pursuit of increasing our knowledge of mythology? Our memories are so bad, but we did think of a couple fun facts we enjoyed learning. And it's not just Greek mythology that fascinated us! The books Karen was talking about were Skin of the Sea and Soul of the Deep by Natasha Bowen. It's so hard to pick a favorite interview since everyone has been lovely, and we managed to talk about pretty much all of them. In particular, make sure you go back and listen to our chat with Roseanne A. Brown and Roshani Chokshi but also Daniel José Older. There are so many talented people in the Percy Jackson fandom, but we have to shout-out a couple of our favorite artists we've discovered this year. There's definitely been an Annabeth Chase art renaissance, and we are so here for it. All of the Sun and the Star artwork has been incredible, but a special shout-out to @AlessiaTrunfio (Kristen's choice picks: here and here). Obviously Sarah (@Hellredsky) is one of our favorites, and Soia also has a special place in our hearts. And how could we forget about @Velinxi. Were you as surprised by the length of our longest episode as we were? What about our shortest episode? Did we ever get under an hour? We got a lot of big announcements this year, but which ones stick out in our minds the most? It's so hard to concentrate when there's so much awesome Percy Jackson news in the world. Chalice of the Gods was a really shocking announcement, and we're still recovering. Surprise, surprise, we had a lot to talk about this episode. Percy Jackson and the Olympians is truly the gift that keeps on giving. Percy Jackson and the Last Olympian (00:54:21) We're here to talk about The Last Olympian chapter 17. We're coming up on the end of this book pretty quickly!! We don't want to talk about Silena dying OR the fact that she was the traitor, but we have to. This was a great twist to the book, and it would've been hard to guess. Are we upset with Silena for being the traitor? CLARISSE DRAKON-SLAYER, FIRST OF HER NAME. The Blessing of Ares is super interesting, especially because it makes Clarisse momentarily invulnerable. Who does Percy summon with Mrs. O'Leary? Okay, why was Leneus' death so sad??? Aryan is going to be so great as Grover. We can see it so clearly. That elevator ride was a beautiful full circle moment. Is the Empire State Building guard mortal? We have another Will Solace sighting! How do we feel about Annabeth's confession that she no longer thinks Luke can be saved? Okay, hear us out: Rachel is Jacob. Percy is Bella. Mount Olympus is Renesmee. It would've been nice to see a conversation between Annabeth and Rachel after this moment. The moment at the hearth is what the sand dollar scene should've been like! Thank goodness Poseidon decided to listen to Percy. Kronos is near! Feedback (01:38:09) Daphne Olive totally agrees with us that Frozen II is the best Frozen. Thanks for listening, and tune in next time for episode 64, which will take a look ahead at everything coming in 2023! Prophecy Radio episode #56 talks about the Lotus Hotel & Casino, and all of the references and Easter eggs we might see in the Percy Jackson and the Olympians TV show. The hosts tackle all the latest news in the Riordanverse, including the Crown of Wishes adaptation, the Freedom Fire imprint, and yet another blog post from Rick Riordan, as well as a reread and discussion of Percy Jackson and the Last Olympian chapter 10. This book is really heating up, and we're only halfway through! New episodes of Prophecy Radio air weekly, and all ages are welcome to tune in. News and Updates (00:03:53) Read Riordan lets us know how we can win a wilderness survival competition with the Hunters of Artemis. Make sure you go follow Tehlor Kay Mejia on Instagram, as she is no longer on Twitter. Roshani Chokshi's A Crown of of Wishes is getting an adaptation on Disney+! It's pretty cool that the show's lead, Avantika, has ties to both Aryan Simhadri (Grover) and Charles Bushnell (Luke). This might even help pave the way for an Aru Shah adaptation! Kwame Mbalia gives everyone a pep talk for NaNoWriMo. Did you also hear the Kwame is heading up a new imprint for Disney Books, called Freedom Fire? Yeah, we're super excited about this. Lotus Hotel & Casino references and Easter eggs (00:12:04) Obviously a Nico and Bianca Easter egg is at the top of everyone's lists, but there's A LOT more Percy Jackson and the Olympians can do with this scene/episode. Obviously Karen's first choice is to put a Disney Hercules reference in the show somehow. Maybe the kids could be playing the Hercules Playstation game that came out way back in 1997? You can currently buy this game on Steam. Is anyone a fan? Kristen also had some ideas for what kind of Disney Easter eggs could end up in the show. We gotta get Finding Nemo or The Little Mermaid in there somehow. But what about Doctor Who!? That could actually make for a GREAT crossover/reference. And, of course, there's always Wreck-It-Ralph. Karen is definitely on board for the water theme—but she had an idea for what their rooms at the hotel could look like. Where would Grover and Annabeth stay? And how could we fit Oliver and Company into this world? We really couldn't pass up this opportunity to drop some movie references. Wouldn't it be cool if Logan Lerman or Alexandra Daddario showed up in the background as one of the adult characters in the hotel? It totally makes sense if the Lotus Hotel was hosting a convention that week! Really, though, Disney needs to hire us. We're so good at this. Poor Grover needs a Lotus Hotel & Casino redemption arc after what he went through in the movie. Some famous missing person HAS to show up at the hotel. It just makes so much sense! Book canon and show canon don't have to match exactly. Do we want the show to break the fourth wall at all? How cool would it be if this scene foreshadowed what would happen in Sea of Monsters aka Percy Jackson and the Olympians season 2. How many classic videogames can they fit into this one scene!? What's more likely, a Kingdom Hearts or Dreamlight Valley reference? Just please, for the love of the gods, don't turn this into Ready Player One. Percy Jackson and the Last Olympian (00:38:37) This week, we're talking The Last Olympian chapter 10. Thank goodness Mrs. O'Leary didn't get put to sleep! Do we ever see the video shield again in the series? Where's the line between science and magic within this universe? What is Grover up to right now? Is he back at CBH? Should Annabeth have been the one to direct all the troops, considering she's a daughter of Athena? This is, like, a REAL war, you guys. Karen NEEDS that Death to Barbie t-shirt. Please give us a Thalia spinoff series!! Percy and Annabeth are such good people. How could you not love them!? These automatons are awesome and SCARY. The scene with the two rivers was pretty cool, but… Can someone please explain how the heck Percy knew what to do with the sand dollar? Percy's got a lot of baggage when it comes to the Minotaur, and we can't wait to see what happens next! Does it make sense that the demigods would be fighting for Olympus, specifically? Feedback (01:17:03) Shout-out to Phoebe for also thinking a Hercules reference would be perfect to see in the Lotus Hotel & Casino scenes. Thanks for listening, and tune in next time for episode 57, where we'll do a Deep Dive on Hermes (seriously, it's perfect timing). This episode's hosts are: Karen Rought and Kristen Kranz. Prophecy Radio episode #54 dives into the latest news in the Riordanverse, including three—yes, you heard right—THREE blog posts from Rick Riordan. This includes updates on Rick Riordan Presents, the latest casting information for the Percy Jackson and the Olympians TV show, as well as the announcement of Percy Jackson Book 6 (aka Percy Jackson and the Chalice of the Gods). We also return to our Percy Jackson reread with a discussion of The Last Olympian chapter 8. New episodes of Prophecy Radio air weekly, and all ages are welcome to tune in. News and Updates (00:02:28) If you haven't already, be sure to listen to our interview with Roseanne A. Brown about Serwa Boateng's Guide to Vampire Hunting. Roseanne is also doing an educator giveaway of the book, ending 10/28. Read Riordan put up another OTP Timelines article—this time about Leo and Calypso. This isn't really news, but we love Angie Thomas and Rick Riordan's friendship. Blog-a-palooza (00:06:56) We have a lot of blog posts to talk about this week—and one extra than we expected! There's so much awesome news, so let's just get into it. First up is the October 9 blog post, titled “News from the Riordanverse October 2022.” You can still pre-order signed copies of The Sun and the Star by Rick Riordan and Mark Oshiro from Barnes & Noble. We're pretty excited that Rick mentions there could be more Will and Nico books in the future. We talk about some Trials of Apollo spoilers and how it could affect The Sun and the Star. What other characters do you think we'll get to see in this book? Don't forget about The Lords of Night by J.C. Cervantes! And how could we forget about The Spirit Glass by Roshani Chokshi!? It's so interesting that Filipino mythology is one of the most requested topics for them to explore. Rick also gives us a few updates from the set of Percy Jackson and the Olympians. We learn roughly where we are in the adaptation of The Lightning Thief. Rick says more nice things about Walker and Leah, and we love to hear it. We guess as to which on-set dog Rick recently met. Rick also has some very interesting insight into the production process and how much he's learned about making a film/television adaptation. It's time to quiz Kristen on more TV/film lingo! Next up: The October 13 blog post, “More Casting News for PJOTV.” Jessica Parker Kennedy has been cast as Medusa. Kristen has definitely seen her in quite a few different shows. She also seems to be a Jon Steinberg darling, and it's exciting that they've worked together so many times! Suzanne Cryer has been cast as Echidna, and she has A LOT of TV credits to her name. Like, a lot. You've probably seen her in something. Her Instagram post about the announcement was so beautiful and heartwarming. Lastly, we've got Adam Copeland as Ares, and is there a more perfect person to step into this role? Maybe this is a good excuse for Karen to finally watch Vikings. Lastly, we've got the October 18 blog post about Percy Jackson and the Chalice of the Gods. Karen reads you the entire blog post so you don't miss A SINGLE DETAIL. Make sure you also read the Publisher's Weekly article, which offers a few additional details. Rick was REALLY trying to get the PJOTV off the ground, and we're here for it. How do we feel about calling Chalice of the Gods Percy Jackson 6? When does this book take place? Okay, but, like, is this the first in a trilogy…? Yeah, we're gonna buy this no matter what, you don't have to worry about that. We're PRETTY sure no one is going to die in this book, so don't panic! Rick reminds us just how much of a big deal Percy Jackson and the Olympians really is. Percy Jackson and the Last Olympian (01:06:37) This week, we're discussing The Last Olympian chapter 8. It feels like it's been ages, but we're back! That windowless, doorless room is cruel and unusual punishment. Why has Percy been dreaming of Rachel throughout this book? Who does that power belong to? We liked the countdown with Typhon instead of racing the clock against another solstice. This episode proves we need to work on our United States geography. Let's talk about this whole situation between Percy and Nico. One thing's for sure, we're always going to talk about how much we love Mrs. O'Leary. Achilles seems to have learned a lot from his death. Okay, we find out the real reason why Luke was able to host Kronos. We love Nico so much, but he's driving us crazy in this book. Is it weird that Percy submerges completely in the River Styx? We loved the moment when Percy pins Hades, but maybe he should've made sure the river thing worked first. Rick didn't have to include that moment with Hades' cloak, but we're glad he did. Feedback (01:33:54) Ian wants to remind everyone to go listen to our Daughter of the Deep review if you've read the book! He also has some clever ideas for the Percy Jackson Monopoly pieces. Sword of Avalon also has some great ideas to improve our Demigod Life game. Thanks for the kind words, too! Henry wrote us a monster of a letter, and we tackle a couple of the most important sections. We really love doing chapters one at a time, even if The Red Pyramid is a bigger book. Thanks for correcting a few timeline things for us! We're old and our memories are bad. We want Tom Sturridge as Morpheus in Percy Jackson and the Olympians season 5! Henry also gives us a great idea for our 100th episode. Is Nico friendly with Anubis, the Egyptian God of Death? He also has a tech question for us, and we need your help! Thanks for listening, and tune in next time for episode 55, which will do a Monster Guide on Procrustus. In a world where trust in institutions and in news is falling and the role of influencers is growing, finding the connective tissue between you and your audience is key to, well, connecting. To establish a rapport, which can if nourished, lead to trust, which can lead to a genuine connection. And for the creator to go further, to push deeper, to find meaning and bearing in places we as consumers or readers or listeners might not otherwise look or expect, like in local news or video game reviews or recipes. I think that matters a lot. We're not only losing trust but feeling that loss. With so much coming at us, we notice and feel a lack of connection, we feel adrift and unmoored. I am moved by people whose work and art I can connect with, whether I'm seeking it out or not. Because connection matters. Who we get our COVID information or our weather forecasts from matters, but also who helps us understand where we can find comfort, and why. My guest today is Swapna Krishna. Swapna is a writer and journalist covering space, science, tech, and pop culture. She writes everywhere from Fast Company to StarWars.com, from StarTrek.com to Business Insider, the LA Times, Bitch Magazine, Bustle, Mental Floss, and more. She's appeared on a million excellent podcasts, at Comic-Con, and is the co-host of her own show, the Desi Geek Girls podcast, and the new host of PBS's show Far Out. Swapna often writes some of the most empathetic tech and pop culture commentary on the web. She has this unique ability to say “this is what this big thing means to me” and make you feel like “yes, me too!” or “Wait I didn't think about that”. We have very different backgrounds and lives but I trust her writing and thoroughly enjoy her new show, and her efforts to try and meet people where they are, on science issues and pop culture fandoms big and small. ----------- Have feedback or questions? http://www.twitter.com/importantnotimp (Tweet us), or send a message to questions@importantnotimportant.com New here? #PodcastersForJustice Mexican-American writer and historian, Isabel Cañas, spoke to me about how to binge-write a novel, her fear of the dark, and swinging for the fences with her gothic debut "The Hacienda." Isabel is a speculative fiction writer, and world traveler – currently working on her Ph.D. dissertation in medieval Islamic literature – who writes fiction inspired by her research and heritage. Her debut novel is the highly-anticipated gothic, The Hacienda, "... a haunted house story with a Latinx refresh .... partly inspired by a home Isabel lived in when she was a child — one she still believes to this day is haunted." Described by The Washington Post as, “[A] gothic tale of doomed love and vengeful spirits." NY Times bestselling author Roshani Chokshi called the book, “A hypnotic, sinister tale that is equal parts terrifying and luxurious ... a nightmare lined with velvet.” In this file Isabel Cañas and I discussed: Writing fantasy fan fiction and her convoluted juvenilia Why horror demands vulnerability from the author On haunted houses and ghosts of colonialism and diaspora Zero-drafting How to write 4000 words a day And a lot more!
