Sometimes our dreams didn't start out as our dreams. Sometimes, our current dreams were once just seeds germinating in the crucible of time and experience leading up to what is now. For seed farmer Jen Williams, being a seed farmer situated within a small island community was not always the dream. The dream to effect meaningful change in the world around her, started out for Jen in a realm all to prominent for most of us right now – electoral politics and the largest human structures of power in our world. But over time, disappointments, reality check disenchantments and more importantly, surprising enchantments, Jen's desire to change the world composted and transformed itself into her current life in the soil, with the plants and their seeds, in community, on the land. Now her wildest dreams effect powerful and beautiful change in the world through her - and our - collective relationships to plants, food, beauty, and place. I had the great joy of visiting Wild Dreams Farm & Seed this past summer, and I am so pleased to welcome Jen Williams to Cultivating Place this week on the seasonal harvest-to-winter transition, life-and-death-and-life-again-cycle celebration day of All Hallows Eve/Samhain. Because like the seasons, and the past, present, and future realms, and our gardens - our wildest dreams are the stuff of transformation. Listen in! Cultivating Place now has a donate button! We thank you so much for listening over the years and we hope you'll support Cultivating Place. We can't thank you enough for making it possible for this young program to grow even more of these types of conversations. The show is available as a podcast on SoundCloud and iTunes. Keir Starmer used his first speech as prime minister to declare that the “work of change begins immediately”. But how will the Labour government approach the complex policy challenges that it has inherited? And how will it start making progress on new promises? From freeing up space in crowded prisons to turning around struggling public services, delivering clean energy and kickstarting economic growth, the government's to-do list is daunting. Labour has promised to “change how Britain is governed” in order to deliver its aims in government – but how will this work in practice? What does Labour's ‘mission-led' approach mean for the way government operates? How will central government work with locally elected mayors? And what do Keir Starmer's cabinet appointments – and the way he has structured his centre of government – tell us about how his plan for government will work? The FT's Jen Williams joined us to discuss Keir Starmer's first week as prime minister and what it tells us about how he intends to govern Britain. Claire de Mézerville López welcomes Jen Williams to the Restorative Works! Podcast. Jen joins us to share her journey of developing a restorative practices based program at her former middle school. The program was born out of a necessity to address conflicts and empower students. Through anecdotes and reflections, Jen illustrates moments where students used their voices, resolved conflicts, and became leaders. From addressing low-level incidents to fostering a culture of empathy and understanding, Jen's approach emphasizes the importance of giving students a platform to express themselves and take ownership of their actions. Discover how Jen's innovative Peacekeepers program not only equipped students with conflict resolution skills but also inspired them to become agents of positive change in their communities. From facilitating restorative conferences to fostering inclusive leadership, Jen's insights offer practical guidance for educators seeking to implement restorative practices in their schools. Jen is an educator with over 20 years of experience, spending most of that time as a middle school counselor in Pennsylvania. Recently, she published a workbook titled Peacekeepers: Empowering Youth Using Restorative Practices, to help educators empower students to facilitate restorative conferences, based on a program she developed during her time as a counselor. She now runs her own consulting business and supports schools across the US with the implementation of restorative practices and student training. Jen earned her Master of Science in Restorative Practices from the IIRP in 2016. In her free time, she enjoys traveling with her family, going on hikes, and is active in her church community. Tune in to learn more about Jen's trajectory as a middle school counselor to becoming an advocate for student voice.

We're a week on from the local and mayoral elections and the dust is still settling on a set of results which dealt another major blow to Rishi Sunak and the Conservatives. And it was the election of metro mayors - the political figureheads for big regions like the North East, Greater Manchester and West Yorkshire - which made most of the headlines. But while most Westminster pundits - and Rishi Sunak himself, are preoccupied with what these results mean for the upcoming General Election, there's a lot less attention being paid to the mayors themselves. Who are they, what are their policies and why are people voting for them, if they bother to vote at all? And do they really know how to run their regions better than Westminster? This week as the new mayors got back to work after the elections Rob Parsons speaks to one of them, South Yorkshire's Oliver Coppard, about why he's prioritising transport in his second term. And Rob gets the bigger picture with three brilliant guests: Jen Williams, Northern Correspondent for the Financial Times, who wrote a great piece last week about how the mayoral elections mark a milestone for English devolution and has taken a particular interest in the affairs of Tees Valley Ben Houchen. Gill Morris, executive chair of Devo Inflect, the UK's leading devolution public affairs agency. Professor Katy Shaw from Northumbria University is one of the experts who helped write Gordon Brown's commission on the UK's future, setting out plans for sweeping constitutional change, which Labour leader Keir Starmer has promised to implement. Secarma Head of Testing, Simon Chapman, takes over the hosting duties as the Hacked Off podcast returns. Episode 107 focuses on IoT and the new regulations that are forcing manufacturers to place security at the heart of their devices. Simon interviews Jason Blake, IOT scheme manager at IASME and Jen Williams who heads up consultancy services at Secarma. Jason talks us through the diverse world of IoT devices, from smart letter boxes to B2B moisture content monitors for farmers and explains why the need for tighter security regulation is long overdue. Jen approaches the subject from a consumer perspective and poses the risks of a home network that has dozens of ‘always on' devices connected and the average consumers understanding of this situation. How do we give consumers a confidence around IoT that has perhaps been eroded of late? The panel discuss IASME's IoT Cyber Secure Scheme and why it's one of the simplest ways for manufacturers to give their devices the security health checks that they need. For anyone interested in the politics of our region there's really only one story in town this week, that's the long-awaited - and long-delayed - report into the murky goings-on at Teesworks, the flagship regeneration project in the North East. The headline news - at least if you're a Conservative supporter of the scheme - is that it cleared those involved of corruption and illegality. But the 97-page document was not a clean bill of health and in fact had a shopping list as long as your arm of failings in the way the project is being run. It came out two days ago and the slanging match over the report's findings is still going on as we record this podcast. Rob Parsons looks at the question, what next for Teesworks, with Jen Williams from the Financial Times, whose reporting brought some of these issues into the open, Graeme Whitfield, North East Editor of Business Live, and Jack Shaw, a local government expert who specialises in examining the inner workings of our local authorities. The Northern Agenda is a Laudable production for Reach. It is presented by Rob Parsons, and produced by Daniel J. McLaughlin. The Northern Agenda podcast is back after a Christmas break for 2024 - and it seems only right to kick off the year with a look ahead to some of the stories we're going to be talking about in Northern politics in the next 12 months. The impending General Election will surely loom large over political debate in our region. But there are a host of fascinating sub-plots across the North that will make headlines of their own - and potentially play a part in deciding who gets the keys to Number 10. And Rob Parsons dissects some of them with two fantastic guests. Professor Andy Westwood from Manchester University and Jen Williams, Northern Correspondent for the Financial Times. Does Rishi Sunak have any chance of keeping hold of the Tories' seats in the North? What are the big mayoral and local elections to watch? And 10 years on from George Osborne's big Northern Powerhouse speech in 2014, are we any closer to seeing his vision become reality? Find out as we take a look ahead at what will surely be a frenetic and dramatic year. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices

Jen Williams lives in London with her partner and their small ridiculous cat. A fan of pirates and dark folklore from an early age, these days she writes horror-tinged crime thrillers with strong female leads as well as character-driven fantasy novels with plenty of banter and magic. In 2015 she was nominated for Best Newcomer in the British Fantasy Awards, and two of her books in her Winnowing Flame trilogy won Best Fantasy Novel at the British Fantasy Awards. We had a great chat with Jen about her journey into becoming a published writer, and hear why writing her "dreadful" first unpublished novel (her words!) was the key to everything. We also discuss why she has recently turned her hand to dark crime novels as well as fantasy, and the pros and cons of writing fantasy trilogies.Links:Buy Games For Dead Girls and Jen's other novelsFollow Jen on TwitterVisit Jen's websiteOut now - a new video podcast from Page One featuring all the latest writing news - Page One Extra! "My greatest hope is that by growing food, seeds, herbs, and medicines I can reconnect myself and my community to just and connected ways of living, giving, and connection with the living world.” - Jen Williams, Wild Dreams Farm and Seed As a whole, we are unrooted people. Our modern lifestyle has caused us to lose our connection with the land, our history, and our interconnectedness. The result can be a low-grade feeling of confusion, apathy, and anxiety. Your healing journey may lead you to a therapist or doctor's office. It may lead you to a healer or guide. Or it may lead you to reconnect to yourself through nature. Jen Williams is a mother, a youth mentor, and a farmer. She operates a farm-based seed company called Wild Dreams Farm and Seed on Vashon Island. For years she has been exploring this connection between the soil, the creatures, the earth, and its people. She's deeply committed to the movements for climate and racial justice and sees re-rooting back to the land as a necessary part of our healing. I met Jen when we were wild, passionate, partying 20-somethings. We've since grown up, gotten sober, raised kids, and found ourselves in the fortunate and challenging position of being heart-centered entrepreneurs in a capitalistic society. I've witnessed Jen's personal and professional journey - sometimes twisting and rough - but always being led by her values and her heart and her deep love of humanity. Spending time with her is like a balm to my soul because she reminds me of what really matters and what we are all capable of when we reconnect to ourselves through our food and the earth. I hope our conversation shows you that healing can come in many forms. The therapist's office might not resonate with you. But putting your hands in the soil, watching the miracle of life burst from seed, and sharing the incredible abundance nature provides with others just might. I hope you enjoy our conversation and as always we'd love to know what resonated for you. My mom was a fundraiser - it's how I knew the field even existed. For years it was novel for me to say that I was a second generation fundraiser, because there just weren't that many of us. Well, that has changed. Significantly! And for the better. Fundraising as a profession has come a long way since our parents started their careers, but what they did strongly influenced who we are and how we've approached philanthropy. Kim talks to travel expert Jen Williams about the current state of travel, what travel will look like in the future, and what you can do now to start (safely) launching your next travel adventure.
What do you do when your passport goes missing while you’re travelling? Well, as proven by Episode 196 of The Thoughtful Travel Podcast, what happens is you end up with a good story to tell (and like most travel problems, it turns out to be solvable). My first guest is Paula Morgan who explains the tale of missing passports during a train trip in Europe - and the unexpected glee of whose fault it was! Next, I chat with Jen Williams who encountered some problems trying to leave Mongolia, in the aftermath of having her passport stolen during her travels. Finally, I speak with Marina Villatora in Guatemala. She went to spend a month at Lake Atitlan, but the stay didn’t turn at all as she’d expected. Meeting local people when you travel is one of the surest ways I know to be a more thoughtful traveller - and to have a lot of fun, too! In Episode 189 of The Thoughtful Travel Podcast I talk to three travellers who discovered fascinating ways to interact with locals on their travels - and of course, they all found it really rewarding. First up, I chat with Tracey Croke who told me that the surest way to get to meet some interesting locals is to join a revolution! There are caveats of course - but it's true that this is what Tracey did on a trip to Macedonia. Next I talk to JoAnna Haugen who found a particularly unique way to get to see what the locals were doing, by volunteering as an international election observer in Ukraine. My last guest is Jen Williams who got to know some locals when she was visiting Bagan in Myanmar, and they led her to quite an intriguing encounter with a local shaman. In all the excitement over the London mayoral election, and Brexit, and coronavirus, and the end of civilisation as we know it, it might have escaped you that there are mayoral elections due in other English cities in early May. So, on this week’s podcast, we're looking at one of those. The last time Skylines spoke to Jen Williams, politics and investigations editor of the Manchester Evening News, it was to talk about exactly what had gone wrong with the northern rail network. Since that's still going wrong (lol), that’s our starting point this week, too. But we swiftly move on to talking about our real topic: Greater Manchester’s upcoming mayoral election and Andy Burnham’s record as mayor, as well as homelessness, policing and, my personal favourite, bus regulation. If you’re on Twitter and you don't follow Jen already, by the way, you’re doing it wrong: she’s on @JenWilliamsMEN. Next time, all being well, I’m off for a walk with independent London mayoral candidate Rory Stewart.Skylines is the podcast from CityMetric, the New Statesman's cities site. It's presented by Jonn Elledge and produced by Nick Hilton. See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.

Day two of the campaign and it’s just as full on as day one. After the Tories had what can be described as not the best of starts to the campaign, Labour’s been hit with the double whammy of deputy leader Tom Watson resigning and two former Labour MPs urging voters to back Boris Johnson. And if that wasn’t enough, after just one episode, Daniel’s co-host Shehab is nowhere to be seen! We track him down to find out exactly what he’s playing at. The big theme of today's campaign has been the economy - with Labour and the Conservatives making big spending promises to voters. Labour's pledging an extra 150 billion pounds and investment on a scale "never seen before". The Conservatives say they'll also borrow more to spend more on transport and hospitals. Do the sums add up? We call Robert on his lunch break to get his take on it all. With the chancellor and shadow chancellor in the north west of England, we talk to the political editor of the Manchester Evening News, Jen Williams, about the gap in government investment between the north and south - and what else matters to voters away from the Westminster bubble.
Dr. Jennifer Williams is a member of the United Nations’ Global Goals Educator Task Force, #TeachSDGs. Our students today need to be engaged in authentic experiences that connect them to real people and real problems of our world. Through the sharing of stories and with unified efforts to tackle global issues, students can begin to discover the power they each have in making a difference at local and global levels. The Climate Action Project, connecting students from 64 countries and 250 schools, provides a unique opportunity for classrooms to take ACTION on climate change and to find their role in the United Nations’ Agenda for Sustainable Development. Climate change is an ideal topic for concentration as this issue is not one that sees borders of countries or is focused on any one geographic location---this is a problem for all---which means every single person can be part of a solution. Together as teachers, through experiences such as The Climate Action Project, we can #TeachSDGs and mobilize as world educators to reach the global goals by 2030. From British Fantasy Award-winning author Jen Williams comes the electrifying conclusion to the Winnowing Flame trilogy. Exhilarating epic fantasy for fans of Robin Hobb. All is chaos. All is confusion. The Jure'lia are weak, but the war is far from over. Ebora was once a glorious city, defended by legendary warriors and celebrated in song. Now refugees from every corner of Sarn seek shelter within its crumbling walls, and the enemy that has poisoned their land won't lie dormant for long. The deep-rooted connection that Tormalin, Noon and the scholar Vintage share with their Eboran war-beasts has kept them alive so far. But with Tor distracted, and his sister Hestillion hell-bent on bringing ruthless order to the next Jure'lia attack, the people of Sarn need all the help they can get. Noon is no stranger to playing with fire and knows just where to recruit a new - and powerful - army. But even she underestimates the epic quest that is to come. It is a journey wrought with pain and sacrifice - a reckoning that will change the face of Sarn forever. Join forces with the heroes of the Winnowing Flame Trilogy as they strive to silence the Jure'lia's poison song once and for all.
