As we delve into Matthew 26, we witness the profound contrast between human scheming and divine love. While religious leaders plot Jesus' demise, we see a beautiful act of devotion unfold in Bethany. Mary's sacrificial anointing of Jesus with expensive perfume teaches us the true nature of worship - giving our best to God without reservation. This story challenges us to examine our hearts: Are we fully devoted to Christ, or do we hold back? Just as the perfume's aroma likely lingered with Jesus through His suffering, our acts of worship can sustain us in difficult times. Let's consider how we can pour out our lives as a fragrant offering to God, trusting that He values our devotion even when others may not understand.#SundaySermon #Worship #JesusFirst#Jesus#Crucifixion#Passover#Worship#Devotion#Forgiveness#Anointing#Sacrifice#Mary#Disciples#Betrayal#Judas#HolySpirit#Communion#Repentance#GospelOfMatthew#Alabaster#Perfume#Spikenard#Love
Dennis is joined via Zoom my playwright Audrey Cefaly & Actor Carolyn Messina from the play Alabaster, which is showing at the Fountain Theater in Los Angeles through March 30th. The play is a darkly Southern tale about a woman named June and her two goats who all survived an Alabama tornado and lived to tell the tale. June's sheltered world is rocked when a New York photographer named Alice comes to photograph her on her farm for an art project and a romance blooms. Oh, and one of the goats, Weezy (played by Carolyn) talks. In the interview, Audrey talks about how the play was inspired by a random image that popped into her head, of a scar-covered woman in a bed and how it then evolved into a love story between two very different women. Carolyn talks about researching goats to prepare for the role of Weezy and how she learned, among other things, that goats have four stomachs. Other topics include: how the two have been friends and collaborators since their high school drama days, the thrill of getting your play published by Samuel French, getting 11 productions of the play produced across the country as a recipient of the NNPN Rolling World Premier program, why their partnership works and meeting audience members after the show and having them share their own stories then ask for a hug.

It's one of those sad but true moments that can sneak up on you in life and leave its indelible mark on one's life. Send us a textAudrey Cefaly streamed into the Playwright's Spotlight after I had the pleasure of seeing the production of her play Alabaster at The Fountain Theatre in Los Angles. This is first time I've had the opportunity to talk to the playwright after seeing their work. We discuss asking big questions, making changes throughout the play's evolution, how much design is on the page, knowing the rules of the card game, and refraining from hardwiring stage directions to allow creative freedom. We also delve into stripping the work down to its core, the use of hashtags, writing poetic dialogue, stillness in storytelling and other way finders, and the use of overlapping and dual dialogue. We wrap it up writing regional, the use of hypnotic language, the purpose of an artistic statements, and her toolbox of playwright vocabulary and "How to Playwright." It's a great conversation that went on for another thirty minutes after I stopped recording. Won't let that happen again. In this two-part interview on the Alabaster Jar podcast, Dr. Amy Orr-Ewing discusses her book Lead Like the Real You: Wisdom for Women on Finding Your Voice, Pursuing God's Calling, and Leading with Courage with Dr. Lynn Cohick. This book explores women's challenges and opportunities in male-dominated spaces and offers practical advice on finding and using their voices. It also delves into the topics of work, intellectual integrity, and love in leadership. In this episode, Dr. Orr-Ewing and Dr. Cohick delve deeply into biblical interpretation, particularly around the creation narrative in Genesis and how it has been misused to justify patriarchal structures and gender-based hierarchies in the church. Dr. Orr-Ewing provides a nuanced and empowering perspective, highlighting how the Bible affirms the equal dignity and agency of men and women as image-bearers of God. They also have a poignant discussion about Dr. Orr-Ewing's personal experiences navigating a toxic situation within the Ravi Zacharias International Ministry (RZIM). They explore concepts like "DARVO" (Deny, Attack, Reverse Victim and Offender) and gaslighting and how these manipulative tactics can be weaponized against women seeking accountability and justice in religious contexts.Key Takeaways: The Bible affirms the equal dignity and value of men and women as image-bearers of God, challenging patriarchal interpretations. The concepts of “headship" and "authority" in the Bible need nuanced explanations since they do not inherently imply male dominance or female subordination. The "DARVO" (Deny, Attack, Reverse Victim and Offender) pattern helps those in religious settings understand when they are being manipulated. There is a big danger of misapplying the redemption narrative to excuse abusers. We should be cautious against rushing to reconcile abusers without true repentance, as this can further harm victims.
