The Buddies enter Britain and the world of King Arthur in The Winter King by Bernard Cornwell. If you're sophisticated, you'll know this as an "Arthurian tale" or a retelling of the classic animated TV show King Arthur and the Knights of Justice. The book had the Buddies debating the merits of LSD-powered sorcery, comparing bar game courage to battlefield bravery, and wondering if maybe everyone in the Dark Ages just had terrible eyesight. So, grab your sword (named or unnamed), pour yourself some liquid courage, and join the Buddies as they battle through Book 1 of the Warlord Chronicles. Let's play fill-in-the-blank: Sex is _____ . The possibilities are endless! But, my word of choice is intimate. It's a perfect shorthand for the spectrum of desires, experiences, and, yes, traumas that inform every sexual encounter––even if the act in question is fake. As in: part of an acclaimed Hollywood film in which sex represents the main character's evolving agency. Intimacy Coordinator Elle McAlpine has worked on some impressive projects, including the award-winning film, Poor Things and the award-winning Netflix series Baby Reindeer. Co-host Anne Remy engages Elle in a nuanced conversation about the power dynamics, energy transference, and permission structures at play behind the scenes of our favorite films and series. GUEST BIO Elle McAlpine is the co-founder of EK Intimacy and brings a unique perspective to intimacy coordination through her background in acting and directing. Passionate about exploring character psychology and storytelling through sexual expression, she helps create spaces where actors can approach intimate scenes with agency and creativity. Her recent work includes Poor Things, One Day, and The Winter King. Today the SibNerds are talking about Chapters 12 & Syl Anagist: Zero. We've. Learned. So. Much. Now we know how the stone eaters and guardians were created. We know what happened when Hoa and the other tuners were told to turn the Plutonic Engine on. We know how Father Earth responded to the puny humans stealing some of his core. And still, we saw how the more pacifist stone eaters are living at Core Point. There were some really sweet moments amidst all the revelations. Next time we'll be finishing the dang book! Inspired by recent book bans and challenges, Anna shares what she's learned about diversity in library collections from her classes. The SibNerds are revisiting their previous discussion around book bans and reevaluating the framing they put on that conversation. A large portion of this conversation talks about the importance of challenging the centering of whiteness and the default being white. We know that this can be an uncomfortable conversation, but we believe that it is critical in our own growth. We hope that this will help others process or begin their growth and understanding of folks who may be different. Today the SibNerds are talking about Chapters 10-11 (and that Syl Anagist chapter in the middle)! This section ended with both Essun and Nassun moving forward on new-found resolute paths—if they had any doubts, they don't anymore. We're back with the first episode of Season Six and we're talking about The Winter King, a fantasy romance by C L Wilson. You can visit the author's website here for details of further books in the series and additional work. There will be some small plot point spoilers in our discussion of the book but we always try to warn you so you can skip ahead. As always with romance, we know there is going to be a HEA and our episodes aim to share the joy we take in following the characters on their journey towards it and prompt conversations exploring why SFF romance is so fantastic. These are adult romances, so warning for explicit language and please check content/trigger warnings for the book before listening if there are topics that you might find upsetting to hear about. If you'd like to watch via our YouTube channel (where subtitles available) you can find it a link here: https://linktr.ee/SFFRomCast along with our social media details. We'd love to hear from you! In this episode of the Cover Crop Strategies podcast, brought to you by Montag Manufacturing, listen to a conversation with cover crop expert Steve Groff, who farms in southern Lancaster County, Pennsylvania. Steve talks about how he first came up with the idea to grow his Winter King Hairy Vetch — a particularly winter-hardy variety of cover crop that is able to survive repetitive freeze-thaw cycles.
Time to get cuffed - winter is upon us. Wynter of the Craig is the King of Wintercraig, and also a Weather Mage (guess what kind of weather he controls). Thamsin, a.k.a. Storm is a princess of Summerlea, and also a Weather Mage. They end up together for political reasons, but stay together for both-being-sexy reasons. But when the winds of magical evil and state-based evil converge against them, will they be able to weather the storm??? Where is the line between romance and fantasy? Or fantasy and historicism? What is camp and does it translate to the necessarily warm feelings romance inspires? Do you know how chimneys work? Don your furriest loin cloth, this one is chill in a NOT chill way.
