In this episode, host KMO speaks with Kevin, co-host of the podcast and Substack publication "Synthesize Sunsets," which explores speculative fiction and the evolution of popular culture in the age of AI and algorithms.Key Discussion Points:17776 by John Boyce: Kevin discusses this multimedia science fiction narrative and how it represents a missed opportunity for innovation in digital storytelling formats.Decades losing their distinctiveness: The conversation explores how time periods had unique visual and cultural identities in the 20th century, while the 21st century has seen a flattening of aesthetic differences between decades.Publishing industry consolidation: They discuss how the consolidation of publishing houses has led to less diversity in science fiction and contributed to the growth of romance-focused fantasy at the expense of traditional science fiction.Science fiction authors and works: The pair share their perspectives on influential authors including Gene Wolfe's "Book of the New Sun," Ursula K. Le Guin, N.K. Jemisin's "Broken Earth" trilogy, Ted Chiang, Iain M. Banks, and Cixin Liu.Christianity and literature: How religious literacy impacts readers' ability to engage with certain works, particularly Gene Wolfe's writing which contains subtle Christian themes.Political perspectives in fiction: The challenges of creating politically engaged fiction that doesn't feel didactic, using examples like Banks' "Culture" series and contemporary works.Media and intellectual diversity: Kevin expresses hope for greater intellectual diversity in media and publishing, noting that Chinese sci-fi author Cixin Liu represents a genuinely different cultural perspective.

Episode Summary:In this episode, Maribel Lopez speaks with Five9's CTO and Head of AI Jonathan Rosenberg on AI's potential in the Customer Experience (CX) and Contact Center as a Service (CcaaS) space. Currently, customers are often unsatisfied with chatbot communication services at contact centers. However, AI's increasing generative capabilities show potential for exciting future applications.  Key Themes:Maribel and Jonathan begin by discussing the current state of AI in CcaaS, and how many customers are unsatisfied with their experiences with automated calls. Contact centers have long attempted to automate aspects of the CX experience, first with DTMF and later with directed dialogue.Unlike these technologies, generative AI has seen widespread adoption. Consumer familiarity with artificial intelligence will lead to them understanding how to interact with generative AI over the phone. Jonathan and Maribel also discuss their predictions for how AI will impact jobs in at contact centers. Jonathan believes that jobs will change, but they will not disappear. Last, Jonathan defines open platforms and explains how their unique features allow for useful CX capabilities. The future of AI in CX depends on how quickly companies eliminate AI hallucinations. Once models overcome this obstacle, Jonathan predicts that AI will see wide adoption in the CX space. For detailed show notes, navigate using the time stamps below:Follow Jonathan Rosenberg on LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/jonathanrosenberg1/Follow Jonathan Rosenberg on X/Twitter: https://x.com/jjrosenberg?lang=en Read Jonathan Rosenberg's articles in the Forbes Technology Council: https://www.forbes.com/councils/forbestechcouncil/people/jonathanrosenberg/ Read the Broken Earth series: https://www.amazon.com/Broken-Earth-Trilogy-Season-Obelisk/dp/031652719X

Jared, Oriana and Ned talk about Jared's choice of topic: worldbuilding. Tolkien is so heavily identified with the concept of worldbuilding that a map of Middle-earth represents the topic on Wikipedia, and his impact in both fantasy and beyond regarding how a world that is not this actual globe we live on is perceived and presented has continuing afterechoes that don't look to disappear anytime soon. At the same time, what exactly worldbuilding IS is a hardly an agreed upon formal standard anywhere, and the amount of work that's been put into developing a story setting in any number of media, not just that of fantasy novels much less novels in general, is vast, varied and takes many particular forms. Meanwhile, Tolkien's own approach as to what worldbuilding is comes out of his own particular personal and philosophical conclusions, and doesn't always take the form of what a more stereotypical approach to the subject might be in the current day. What makes the idea of Middle-earth so compelling to readers entranced by his works, and what drives them to learn more about it or to elaborate on it in their own right? What other creators, in fiction and beyond it, successfully approach similar levels of immersion, and are there particular points of commonality to be found there? Are there particular points in Tolkien's stylistic approach that signal notable strengths in creating the sense of Middle-earth as an actual place, and how much of that might lie in a difference between received perception and the reality of the work? And how much does Jared's own forthcoming fantasy novel drive this discussion? Nora Keita Jemisin was raised in both Mobile, Alabama and New York City. Bouncing back and forth between the two cities, fiction was Jemisin's anchor. She always knew that she wanted to be a writer and began taking steps to become one in her late 20s and early 30s. Since then, she has found great acclaim and has been heralded by The New York Times as, "The most celebrated science fiction and fantasy writer of her generation." She is most well known for her trilogy of novels, collectively called The Broken Earth. In 2018 she became the first author in history to win three Best Novel Hugo awards in a row, one for each book in the trilogy. Ursula K. Le Guin, born Ursula Kroeber on October 21st, 1929, in Berkeley California, is a celebrated author of poetry, fiction, non-fiction and more. She's written 23 novels, 12 volumes of short stories, 11 volumes of poetry, 13 children's books, five essay collections, and four works of translation. She's won several Nebulas and Hugos along with a slew of other awards. Known mostly for her science fiction, Le Guin refused to be pigeonholed into a single genre.

For the next few months, we're sharing some of our favorite conversations from the archives. This week we turn the mic over to our sibling podcast “The Ezra Klein Show,” for a discussion that aired last month between Klein and the novelist N.K. Jemisin. The novelist and former Book Review columnist N.K. Jemisin is one of the most celebrated science-fiction and fantasy writers at work today: The winner of multiple Hugo Awards — including an unprecedented three in a row for her remarkable “Broken Earth” trilogy — she is renowned for her ability to build fictional worlds that reflect the complex social and political dynamics of our own.  Her latest novel, “The World We Make,” is a sequel to “The City We Became,” and like that book it examines the ways cities come to take on their own personalities and characters, and how they respond to the forces threatening those identities. Jemisin visited “The Ezra Klein” show in October to discuss the books and the real world that informed them. “I felt like writing about our world,” she told the host Ezra Klein. “And if I'm going to do that, then I would do the world a disservice by treating it as some fantasy land. I don't want to depict New York, as much as I love it, as all joy and all light and all happiness.”We would love to hear your thoughts about this episode, and about the Book Review's podcast in general. You can send them to books@nytimes.com.

N.K. Jemisin is a fantasy and science-fiction writer who won three consecutive Hugo Awards — considered the highest honor in science-fiction writing — for her “Broken Earth” trilogy; she has since won two more Hugos, as well as other awards. But in imagining wild fictional narratives, the beloved sci-fi and fantasy writer has also cultivated a remarkable view of our all-too-real world. In her fiction, Jemisin crafts worlds that resemble ours but get disrupted by major shocks: ecological disasters, invasions by strange, tentacled creatures and more — all of which operate as thought experiments that can help us think through how human beings could and should respond to similar calamities.Jemisin's latest series, which includes “The City We Became” and “The World We Make,” takes place in a recognizable version of New York City — the texture of its streets, the distinct character of its five boroughs — that's also gripped by strange, magical forces. The series, in addition to being a rollicking read, is essentially a meditation on cities: how they come into being, how their very souls get threatened by forces like systemic racism and astronomical inequality and how their energies and cultures have the power to rescue and save those souls.I invited Jemisin on the show to help me take stock of the political and cultural ferment behind these distressing conditions — and also to remember the magical qualities of cities, systems and human nature. We discuss why multiverse fictions like “Everything Everywhere All at Once” are so popular now, how the culture and politics of New York and San Francisco have homogenized drastically in recent decades, Jemisin's views on why a coalition of Black and Latinx voters elected a former cop as New York's mayor, how gentrification causes change that we may not at first recognize, where to draw the line between imposing order and celebrating the disorder of cities, how Donald Trump kept stealing Jemisin's ideas but is at the root a “badly written character,” whether we should hold people accountable for their choices or acknowledge the way the status quo shapes our decision-making, what excites Jemisin about recent discoveries about outer space, why she thinks we are all “made of exploding stars” and more.Mentioned:N.K. This week we were so excited to interview Joe Haldeman and his wife Gay! The Forever War is absolutely one of the best sci fi books of all time, and we were excited to discuss the origins, real-life inspiration, and message of the book, as well as sci-fi and writing more broadly. In addition to writing more than 30 novels, Joe was also a professor at MIT (as was Gay) where he taught science fiction writing for decades. This week, instead of us recommending similar books, we asked Joe and Gay to recommend their favorite sci-fi books. Among Joe's books, they recommended Camouflage, the World's Trilogy, and The Accidental Time Machine. For books by other writers, they recommended anything by Vonnegut, The Murderbot series by Martha Wells, Ted Chiang, N.K. Jemisin's Broken Earth trilogy, and Lois McMaster Bujold's Vorkosigan Saga (as well as some love for John Dos Passos and Ernest Hemingway if you want to read some non science fiction).YouTube link if you prefer to watch the episode.NO SPOILERS SUMMARY OF THE FOREVER WAR: William Mandella was a physics student when he was conscripted into the UNEF. Human colony ships had been disappearing, apparently at the hands of a newly discovered alien species called the Taurans, and humanity is conscripting the best and brightest to go out and fight the aliens in deep space.Mandella and the rest of the recruits undergo dangerous and brutal training to learn how fight for control of the collapsars that greatly speed interstellar travel. During training and through the difficult fighting that follows, Mandella falls in love with another member of his unit, a woman named Marygay Potter.Mandella and Marygay do everything they can to survive the war, but even if they survive, they still can't return to the world they left behind. Even with the collapsars to speed their interstellar journeys, travelling through the gaps between the stars still requires accelerating to near lightspeed, and the resulting time dilation means every trip takes them farther and farther into the future, away from their families and the society they knew.

Join me for happy hour nine with Rey! We descend with Rey into the bowels of The Bent Pyramid in Cairo, Egypt, for one of the scariest moments of his life. We also engage in some slight panic spirals about being trapped in a pyramid and enjoy some spirited beverages. Rey's Boo Club PicksBinti by Nnedi Okorafor - From Maria Haskins' Amazon review: “Nnedi Okorafor's science fiction novella Binti is a suspenseful and exhilarating read that plunges you headlong into a future world where space ships are living creatures, and humanity is just one of many space-faring civilizations.”The Broken Earth by N.K. Jemisin - From The Broken Earth website: “In this Hugo-Award-winning series, there will be war all across the Stillness: a battle royale of nations for the resources necessary to get through the long dark night. Essun does not care if the world falls apart around her. She'll break it herself, if she must, to save her daughter.”Rey's Shares not ScaresCheck out the Darajah Music Initiative! Rey volunteers with them teaching clarinet to children in Tanzania. In addition to education, their mission includes conservation of the Mpingo, commonly referred to as African Blackwood or Grenadilla, which is the wood used to create clarinets and grows in Tanzania.
