Welcome to Flashback Friday! We're bringing back two great films that we covered at SXSW, because you will be able to see them on the big screen (and we highly recommend that you do) during the Frameline Film Festival in San Francisco (from June 19th -June 29th)!A House Is Not A Disco captures a year in the life of the world's most iconic homo-normative community: Fire Island Pines. Director Brian J. Smith and producer Jeremy Truong share the difficulty of staying focused while you're being offered margaritas during filming, how climate change became an important part of the story, and the concept behind "food for bottoms".I Don't Understand You is a narrative film that follows an American couple on the verge of adopting a baby as they find themselves stranded in rural Italy without transportation or language skills. And of course, chaos ensues. This interview is with producers Jessamine Burgum and Kara Durrett from Pinky Promise Films. We get into starting a production company during the heart of the pandemic, their decision making process for new films, how being a young company is an advantage in an ever changing industry, and what a difference it makes to work with really cool people.Purchase tickets to see these films here!Follow A House Is Not A Disco on IGFollow director Brian J. This episode explores two SXSW Film Festival documentaries that are very dick-heavy (literally and figuratively).A House Is Not A Disco captures a year in the life of the world's most iconic homo-normative community: Fire Island Pines. Director Brian J. Smith and producer Jeremy Truong share the difficulty of staying focused while you're being offered margaritas during filming, how climate change became an important part of the story, and the concept behind "food for bottoms".Dickweed tells the true story of a heist-gone-wrong that resulted in two people getting kidnapped, one man losing his dick, and no one getting paid. Director Jonathan Ignatius Green joins us to share how he got the green light to tell this story, sharing the narrative from the point of view of the convict as well as the victims, and his interest in true crimes involving everyday people who one day cross the line.Follow A House Is Not A Disco on IGFollow director Brian J. Just fifty miles east of Manhattan, Fire Island has been considered a gay village since the 1950s, with the stretch of land between Fire Island Pines and Cherry Grove—known as the Meat Rack—being a safe haven for repressed gay men to fully express and experience their sexuality. In this episode, we're diving into the island's rich history, tracing its evolution from a secluded getaway for artists and bohemians to a thriving vacation destination for the queer community, and discussing the growing threat it faces from the impacts of climate change.Additional Resources:24. I've been planning this mix for months now and so excited about it...so it brings me huge joy to finally get it to you. I'll tell you about the influences that helped me create it and then I'll tell you about why I envision it as "Fire Island" house music. First, the influences. I was lucky enough to live in Philly during the glory days of clubbing (the 90s). Because of my close proximity to NYC I was going to clubs on a near-weekly basis listening to internationally famous DJs such as Frankie Knuckles, David Morales, DJ BUC (RIP), Hex Hector, Louie Vega, Danny Tenaglia and Morabito to name a few. I was going to clubs such as Sound Factory, Roxy, Limelight and Sound Factory Bar(and of course the Pavilion on Fire Island). Those DJs were the most influential to me -- and largely molded me and my style of DJing from the very beginning. So that's a quick bit about where my influences come from. About why I envision this music as "Fire Island" house music: It was almost always a guarantee that me and my friends would stay in the clubs and parties until the very last note rang out -- usually in the wee hours of the morning. During the Autumn, Winter and Spring the above-mentioned clubs were the places to be. As the nights turned into mornings the sound would transition to a spin-chilling sound that was laden with pianos, horns and sweeping melodies. Morning music was a thing and it had a most definite sound. It was jazz, funk, disco and urban influenced. During the summertime the center of gravity in New York moves out to the most magical paradise of the Fire Island Pines and Cherry Grove. That same clubbing blueprint is enacted at the Pavilion in the Pines. I have been fortunate to spend more nights than I can count experiencing that glory. But it isn't just about clubbing on Fire Island. House culture is a huge thing on the island. One can walk the boardwalks at 3PM or 3AM and it is guaranteed that there will be music wafting through the air. And it's not just any music. It's *THIS* music. Because this music is melodic and rooted in "real" music...it is also versatile and perfectly aligns itself with not only early morning clubbing but also lazy days by the pool and on the beach. About this particular mix: I hope you love hearing it as much as I loved creating it. It's something of a tale of two sounds (that perfectly belong together). The first half of the mix is made up of stunning piano house pieces. I then transition into a more vocal-centric sound the second half of the mix that is influenced by that jazz, disco and funk that I speak about above. Every note you hear...started in my heart. As I always say...from my HEART...to your EARS. Love. #/Artist/Title/Remix01. Moon Rocket/Main Piano/Piano & Strings Intro02. Wayne Cooper/The Piano Song/Teddy Douglas Remix03. The Invasion of the Pines is an annual event held on Fire Island that has become an important part of the island's drag culture. The event takes place on the Fourth of July and involves a parade of drag performers, who make their way from the neighboring town of Cherry Grove to the upscale community of Fire Island Pines. The parade, which began in 1976, is a playful take on the American Revolution, with performers dressed in elaborate costumes that pay homage to the founding fathers. The Invasion of the Pines is a celebration of drag and LGBTQ+ culture, as well as a way to push back against the elitism and exclusivity that has historically been associated with Fire Island's Pines community. The event has grown in popularity over the years and now attracts thousands of visitors to the island each summer. It is a testament to the enduring power of drag as a form of resistance and a means of bringing communities together. So in honor of pride month, on today's episode, we are thrilled to welcome a true star of the drag scene. This queen has dazzled audiences with her stunning performances, incredible costumes, and unmatched charisma. She's a true icon of the LGBTQ+ community in Fire Island and a shining example of the power of self-expression and acceptance. Please join us in welcoming the one and only Pixie Aventura. While many of our listeners are no doubt getting ready for Christmas festivities this week, for others the winter celebrations have already begun. Candles are being lit, loved ones are gathered close, and latkes are already sizzling in oil as our Jewish friends, family, and neighbors are celebrating Chanukah, the festival of lights. From Gerda Lerner and Gloria Steinem to Betty Freidan and Naomi Wolf, I have always admired to contributions of Jewish women to feminist thought and yet we haven't yet had the opportunity to highlight voices from the Jewish community this season. With that in mind, I was so grateful to be put in contact with a fabulous writer, thinker, and rabbi — Hara Person —who generously volunteered to join us this season and share some stories of powerful women in the Jewish holiday tradition.Rabbi Hara Person (she/her) is the Chief Executive of Central Conference of American Rabbis. Previously, she was the CCAR's Chief Strategy Officer. In that capacity, she oversaw the Communications Department and served as Publisher of CCAR Press, and worked with leadership on overall organizational strategy.Rabbi Person was ordained in 1998 from HUC-JIR, after graduating summa cum laude and Phi Beta Kappa from Amherst College (1986) and receiving an MA in Fine Arts from New York University/International Center of Photography (1992).She served as Educator at the Brooklyn Heights Synagogue from 1990-1996, and was the Adjunct Rabbi there from 1998-2019. Since 1998, Rabbi Person has been the High Holy Day Rabbi of Congregation B'nai Olam, Fire Island Pines, NY.Before coming to the CCAR, Rabbi Person was the Editor-in-Chief of URJ Books and Music, where she was responsible for the revision of The Torah: A Modern Commentary (2005) and the publication of many significant projects, including the Aleph Isn't Tough adult Hebrew series and Mitkadem: Hebrew for Youth as well as several award-winning children's books. While at URJ, she was also the Managing Editor of The Torah: A Women's Commentary, named the National Jewish Book Award Book of the Year in 2008.Rabbi Person is also the co-author of Stories of Heaven and Earth: Bible Heroes in Contemporary Children's Literature and as well as co-editor of That You May Live Long: Caring for Your Aging Parents, Caring for Yourself, and Editor of The Mitzvah of Healing.
