The Stories — "I dyed the bottom of it Manic Panic raspberry-red. I had a belly button pierce. I wore a lot of midriffs. I was a kind of Jewish Shakira, trying to have some influence from Erykah Badu or something, but I was not cool in that way at all.” “I really wanted to be in that movie. I just love Sofia Coppola so much. At the time I didn't have a child. I didn't know much about mothering, and because the writing was so good, I think I knew what to do.” “I want Ida to know that the world is a field of relations. It's cause and effect. Things don't come from nowhere. People don't come from nowhere. Everybody has a heart. It means that she has the ultimate safety in me and in Ben, my husband.”The Backstory — “When I started doing improv and excelled, it was like realizing that you could run really fast or something.” “[SNL] was a necessary opportunity for me to take. I saw a lot in myself that I didn't expect to see. Though challenging, it completely pointed me in the direction of my own natural success.”Wisdom Rains — "Every time we love a piece of art, that's our achievement. The original creation is the achievement of the artist and the people who may have helped them, or made them feel encouraged or inspired… the beauty and offerings of their world at that time.”On Inspo — "When something is ready to be expressed outside of my personal life, there tends to be no hesitation in terms of either putting it in standup or putting it on the page.”On playing the best friend in both It Ends With Us and Dying for Sex — “Other than me playing them, I think it's totally two different pieces of work, two different writers… totally different. I'm often cast as people who are 'the funny person,' but in Dying for Sex, what was offered to me was such an incredible combination of character traits.”On Dying for Sex — “It was a real moment in understanding my own self-defined legitimacy… backed up by Liz Meriwether and Kim Rosenstock writing it. They're so incredible. I thought, Michelle wants me to be here, and she sees me. She's not like seeing hope for what I will be. She's watching my work. She's connecting with me. We're glad we're here. It felt so good. I felt really enrobed in my character.”On her latest book, Lifeform — “I'd found it really hard to write anything that felt like it could breathe and progress. I found it hard to say something interesting, and that wasn't just me having a tiny little shit fit. That's cruel to say about myself, I know, but sometimes it's just that way. Then, in the summer of 2023, my daughter was two-and-a-half, and I could suddenly just catch a wave.”What Else — “I really want to write another kid's book, not a Marcel book, but another picture book. And I'm writing a screenplay right now. I would also like to write a theater piece for myself. There's always a lot that I'm trying to do all at once, in small doses, and then something will overtake everything else.” At The Sea, an upcoming film with Amy Adams.Obsixed — A collection of Jenny Slate's current lifestyle obsessions.Discover more + Shop the podcast:Dying For Sex on HuluIt Ends With Us on NetflixLifeform by Jenny Slate Little Weirds by Jenny SlateAbout The House by Ron Slate + Jenny SlateMarcel the Shell with Shoes On: Things About Me by Jenny Slate + Dean Fleischer Camp Marcel the Shell: The Most Surprised I've Ever Been by Jenny Slate + Dean Fleischer Camp Chani Nicholas and the Chani AppCaron Callahan Carissa ShirtCaron Callahan Lila SkirtTulsi Rose Tea Discover the episode and more on storyandrain.comfollow @storyandraintalks and @storyandrain on Instagram follow @storyandraintalks and @storyandrain on Threadsall about the host

Tough podcast episode to find just one series for TV Gold Show of the Week! Three very impressive American dramas to choose from. You are going to need access to Disney+ and AppleTV+ accounts to enjoy them all.• Good American Family (Disney+, 8 episodes) A synopsis that starts "[a series] about the adoption of a child with dwarfism and the subsequent abandonment of the child" doesn't scream must-watch. But a cast led by Ellen Pompeo and Mark Duplas make this a compelling watch.• Dying For Sex (Disney+, 8 episodes) A comedy with a difference features Michelle Williams literally dying for sex. Half hour episodes fly by thanks in part to great supporting cast including Jenny Slate, Rob Delaney and Sissy Spacek.• Your Friends and Neighbours (AppleTV+, 10 episodes) Jon Hamm turns in an acting masterclass in arguably his best role since Mad Men. And with a character not totally dissimilar to that series' Don Draper. Hamm leads a good life in finance markets, but he finds himself failing to make ends meet and he resorts to drastic measures.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

The premise might be a tough sell: a young woman attempts to finally own her sexuality following a terminal diagnosis. In the new show Dying For Sex, Michelle Williams stars as a cancer patient confronting the unsatisfying relationships in her life. The series is also a raunchy sex comedy that suggests it's never too late to insist on your own happiness. And it's got a stellar cast, including Jenny Slate, Rob Delaney, and Sissy Spacek.Learn more about sponsor message choices: podcastchoices.com/adchoicesNPR Privacy Policy

In the new FX series "Dying for Sex," a woman diagnosed with metastatic breast cancer decides to end her marriage to go on a journey of sexual self-discovery. The series stars Michelle Williams as Molly and Jenny Slate as her friend Nikki. The show is based on a podcast of the same name by Nikki Boyer. Slate and the series co-creator, writer, and executive producer Kim Rosenstock discuss the series, which is streaming now on FX on Hulu.
On today's episode of Write On, we chat with Kim Rosenstock, co-creator and co-showrunner for the new limited series, Dying For Sex, starring Michelle Williams, Jenny Slate and Sissy Spacek. Based on a true story, Dying for Sex is about a woman diagnosed with metastatic breast cancer who abandons her husband of 15 years to begin a journey of sexual discovery. Rosenstock talks about her background as a playwright, nearly missing out on the opportunity to write for the hit show New Girl, and navigating the complicated tone of Dying For Sex that balances a woman having unconventional, often hilarious sexual escapades with facing her own mortality. “We need humor the most as human beings, so don't be afraid of injecting humor and joy and levity into these sort of subject matters… If you have the impulse to make it funny or to make it feel joyful or hopeful, lean into that and don't be afraid of it. I also think that is what makes it feel real, actually. To me, that makes it feel more honest, not the other way around… I think what's exciting is that audiences are embracing these kinds of stories that can kind of go into darker and lighter places at the same time,” says Rosenstock about mixing joy and sadness in Dying For Sex. To hear more, listen to the podcast. Please be advised the interview includes discussion of sexual abuse. Dying for Sex is currently streaming on Hulu.
When David Tennant was three, he told his parents he wanted to grow up to play Doctor Who on TV. As a teen, he held onto that dream: "I was quite weedy and I wore glasses and I had a terrible haircut, so all those things still felt possible in the world of the Doctor. There was something about that character I could be," Tennant tells Sam Briger. He was Doctor Who for five years and, it turns out, he was suited for lots of other characters–including villains and detectives, and the lead in many Shakespeare plays.Later, TV critic David Bianculli reviews the new series Dying for Sex, starring Michelle Williams and Jenny Slate.Learn more about sponsor message choices: podcastchoices.com/adchoicesNPR Privacy Policy

Emma & Katie get into some shenanigans this week trying to break up our exes with Charlie Day and Jenny Slate. We also talk quite a bit about escapism and the fascist takeover of the United States, so if you don't wanna listen to that, skip to minute 20 or so, I don't know what to tell ya.

Ryan and Dylan give their thoughts on the not so well-reviewed The Electric State from the Russo Brothers.
It's a Pi Day miracle: We recorded these reviews in the same place at the same time for the first time in a long time. Five years, to be exact. And it was so nice to be together again at Alonso's apartment on this rainy day in LA. We begin with "The Electric State," an empty, ugly, $320 million action extravaganza from longtime MCU directors Anthony and Joe Russo. It's a retro-futuristic, post-apocalyptic story set in the '90s, after humans and robots have gone to war. The ridiculous cast includes Millie Bobby Brown, Chris Pratt, Stanley Tucci, Anthony Mackie, Brian Cox, Jenny Slate, Ke Huy Quan and Woody Harrelson as Mr. Peanut. Yes, you read that right. Streaming now on Netflix. We were also disappointed with "Opus," about a legendary pop star who invites a group of journalists to his remote retreat to listen to his first album in three decades. It's an A24 horror movie, and it feels awfully familiar. It also features an impressive cast including Ayo Edebiri, John Malkovich, Murray Bartlett, Juliette Lewis and Amber Midthunder. In theaters now. And over at our Patreon, we recap the latest episode of "Daredevil: Born Again" on Disney+. Thanks for sharing some of your time with us -- we'll try to do this in person again soon!
