On July 5th 2020, we walked away from the Amelia Earhart case as a team. After over a year of recording and almost two years in production, we ended what I thought was the final conversation we'd have on this show regarding Amelia Earhart. Well, you know how that goes….. 2 weeks ago, on January 26th, a very intriguing sonar image of what appears to be an aircraft 16,000 feet below the surface of the Pacific was revealed by Tony Romeo and Deep Sea Vision - a team that had been searching in that area for any remnants they could find of the holy grail of aviation. Sometimes, when you're searching for a needle in the biggest haystack on the face of the earth, you produce a miracle. Tonight, for one night only, we return to our audience and re-open the case that we left over 4 years ago. Suddenly, it's the summer of 2019 again. And Jen Taylor hasn't missed a step. This is a line I never thought I'd say again. Welcome back to Vanished. This is Amelia Earhart & Fred Noonan. Summer 2019 - Pool Side by Reed Dailey
welcome to the nonlinear library, where we use text-to-speech software to convert the best writing from the rationalist and ea communities into audio. This is: Summary of Core Feedback Collected by CEA in Spring/Summer 2019, published by Ben_West, Centre for Effective Altruism on the effective altruism forum. Introduction The Centre for Effective Altruism (CEA) aims to grow and maintain the Effective Altruism (EA) movement. As part of that work, it is important for us to understand the needs, values, and concerns of members of the EA community. CEA collects feedback from community members in a variety of ways (see “CEA's Feedback Process” below). In the spring and summer of 2019, we reached out to about a dozen people who work in senior positions in EA-aligned organizations to solicit their feedback. We were particularly interested to get their take on execution, communication, and branding issues in EA. Despite this focus, the interviews were open-ended and tended to cover the areas each person felt was important. This document is a summary of their feedback. The feedback is presented “as is,” without any endorsement by CEA. This feedback represents a small (albeit influential) portion of the EA community, and should be considered in context with other sources of feedback. This post is the first in a series of upcoming posts where we aim to share summaries of the feedback we have received. The second is here. CEA's Feedback Process CEA has, historically, been much better at collecting feedback than at publishing the results of what we collect. This post is part of our attempt to address that shortcoming and publish more feedback, but, until more can be published, we want to share more details about the types of feedback we collect. As some examples of other sources of feedback CEA has collected this year: We have received about 2,000 questions, comments and suggestions via Intercom (a chat widget on many of CEA's websites) so far this year We hosted a group leaders retreat (27 attendees), a community builders retreat (33 attendees), and had calls with organizers from 20 EA groups asking about what's currently going on in their groups and how CEA can be helpful Calls with 18 of our most prolific EA Forum users, to ask how the Forum can be made better. A “medium-term events” survey, where we asked everyone who had attended an Individual Outreach retreat how the retreat impacted them 6-12 months later. (53 responses) EA Global has an advisory board of ~25 people who are asked for opinions about content, conference size, format, etc., and we receive 200-400 responses to the EA Global survey from attendees each time. The feedback summarized in this document sometimes agrees with other feedback we have received, and sometimes disagrees. This document generally presents feedback “as is” in an attempt to give an accurate summary of people's responses, even if the feedback here disagreed with opinions we have gotten from other data sources. Solutions Mentioned in this Document In addition to examples of concerns respondents raised, this document contains efforts CEA has implemented which may address the concern. Efforts are ongoing, so these ideas are not intended to be final solutions, and we will continue to iterate as we gather more information about how things are working. Additionally, the solutions were not necessarily triggered by this feedback – many of these projects were started before the feedback round was run, were inspired by other feedback, etc. Executive Summary Things Which Are Going Well CEA's Community Health and Events Projects. Respondents felt that the Community Health team does important work to keep the community safe, and there is a strong argument for a central entity like CEA to oversee community health. EA Global is the “flagship” event of the community, and smaller events run by CEA were also positively regarded. EA Community Members are Smart, Talented, and Thoughtful. Respondents frequently mentioned ...
Already scared from the oversexed band camp, I am going back to the city and see what its like having a summer job that you don't want. Try doing that job as a carny in the 80's. I am reviewing "Adventureland (2009)" along with a Quarantine Quickie review of "The Last Summer (2019)" starring another set of young adult actors playing a set of graduated high school kids going through their last summer before heading off to college. From now until the end of August, there will be a new episode every week watching and reviewing different scenarios and locations of what and where you would be doing and going for the summer. This is a collaboration with the podcast Radical Retro Rewind Podcast. Ryan the host will be enjoying summer camp at Crystal Lake with Pamela, Jason, Tommy and many more every Friday from now until August. I will be popping in on some of those reviews myself. Summer Camp and Other Tour every Wednesday and Friday for the whole summer. This Friday is "Friday The 13th Part 2" on Radical Retro Rewind Podcast Next week is a hellhole of a camp in the 80s with "Sleepaway Camp (1983)" "There are no such thing as a guilty pleasure film. This podcast is a throwback to September 2019, when the casters hadn't heard of the word COVID, were worried about summer ending and took a look at how life was pretty simple back then. A great contrast to the beginning of summer 2020, COVID season.
The zombie TV show, Z NATION, was almost a midnight movie take on the zombie genre. With its crazy over the top episodic storytelling, it was a curiosity. Now, in 2019, the creators of the show have created a new series, loosely connected to their original series. BLACK SUMMER (2019) appeared on Netflix with a very different tone. It had its genre elements, but any dark humor or over the top scenes disappeared and were replaced with more horrific elements. After parts of the world have become uninhabitable, people are reassigned to neighborhoods that are clear of the pandemic. When an outbreak occurs in a newly established community, a group of survivors that miss the scheduled evacuation buses must fight to break out and escape from the infected while trying to prove they themselves are not infected. The show stars actress/model Jamie King along with an ensemble cast of actors. After its first season, a second season was announced. However, the Covid-19 pandemic has made the release and production of season two pending. Dark Discussions looks at this eight episode season of the series and gives their thoughts.

The 7 Best LED LCD TVs - Summer 2019 (RTINGS.com) The editors at RTINGS.com have just updated their Seven Best LED TVs for the Summer and we bring those to you. RTINGS.com is a great resource when you are looking to buy a new UHD TV. They have the most thorough reviews of any site on the Internet. All the TVs that we discuss come with an in depth review that can be found at the links below. Best LED TV: Samsung Q90/Q90R QLED (65” Street Price $2500) The best LED TV is the 2019 QLED Samsung Q90R. It has impressive quality and an excellent dark room performance, thanks to the deep blacks due to the native contrast ratio and very good local dimming support. This TV is suitable for a bright room, as it can get very bright and can easily fight glare. HDR content looks full of saturated colors and bright highlights thanks to the TV's wide color gamut and high HDR peak brightness. It has a very fast response time that delivers clear and crisp motion, which is great for watching sports or playing video games. The input lag is very low even with motion interpolation, and gamers will also appreciate the auto low latency mode and FreeSync variable refresh rate support. Full Review Mixed Usage 8.7 Movies 8.6 TV Shows 8.6 Sports 8.6 Video Games 9.2 HDR Movies 8.5 HDR Gaming 8.9 PC Monitor 9.0 Pros: Very bright both in SDR and HDR. Excellent low input lag and gaming features. Remarkable motion handling. Cons: Some gray uniformity issues at the edges. CHEAPER ALTERNATIVE: VIZIO P SERIES QUANTUM 2018 (65” Street Price$1500) Mixed usage rating of 8.6 Best LED TV for Color Accuracy: Sony X900F (65” Street Price $1500) If you want the most accurate image, the Sony X900F is the best LED TV for color accuracy that we've tested so far. This TV delivers great picture quality, with an excellent contrast ratio, a decent full array local dimming feature, and great peak brightness. It also has outstanding accuracy out of the box and has a great wide color gamut, which is important for a good HDR experience. This TV also has excellent motion handling, with an outstanding response time, a nearly flicker-free backlight, and a versatile motion interpolation feature. It also has an optional black frame insertion feature, but it can't flicker at 60Hz, so there are noticeable duplications when playing 60Hz content. Full Review Mixed Usage 8.3 Movies 8.5 TV Shows 8.2 Sports 8.1 Video Games 8.6 HDR Movies 8.4 HDR Gaming 8.5 PC Monitor 8.3 Pros: Deep and uniform blacks Excellent motion handling Bright HDR highlights Cons: Picture quality degrades at an angle CHEAPER ALTERNATIVE: VIZIO P SERIES 2018 (65” Street Price$1000) Mixed usage rating of 8.3 Best Budget LED TV: TCL 6 Series/R617 2018 (65” Street Price $750 if you can still find them) If the Sony X900F is too expensive, the TCL 6 Series R617 is the best budget LED TV that we have reviewed. This TV delivers great performance for most uses. It has excellent dark room performance thanks to the deep contrast ratio and full-array local dimming system. It also has excellent low input lag, perfect for gaming or for use as a PC monitor. Unfortunately, there have been widespread reports of gray uniformity issues with this TV which may or may not have been fixed, so sports fans might not be pleased with this model. Full Review Mixed Usage 8.0 Movies 8.0 TV Shows 7.7 Sports 7.6 Video Games 8.6 HDR Movies 8.1 HDR Gaming 8.4 PC Monitor 8.3 Pros: Very bright in HDR and SDR Excellent low input lag for gaming Good local dimming and native contrast produce deep blacks Cons: Picture quality degrades at an angle Uniformity could be better CHEAPER ALTERNATIVE: TCL 4 SERIES/S425 2019 (75” Street Price$1000) Mixed usage rating of 7.3 Notable Mentions Samsung Q80/Q80R QLED: Excellent TV; less expensive than the Q90R, but lacks the One Connect box and has less local dimming zones. See review Samsung Q9FN/Q9/Q9F QLED 2018: Excellent TV; worse viewing angles, but some large sizes are probably worth it over the Q90R. See review Sony Z9F: Great TV with great picture quality, but the Vizio P Series Quantum is better. See review Sony X950G: Great TV, but the X900F is less expensive and performs similarly. See review LG SK9500: Good TV with wide viewing angles, but not very competitive. See review Vizio M Series 2018: Good TV, but the TCL R617 is better and cheaper. See review TCL 5 Series/S517 2018: Decent versatile 4k TV, but more expensive than the TCL 4 Series S425 for similar performance. See review Vizio V Series 2019: Decent TV, but the TCL S425 has better smart features. See review Vizio P Series Quantum X 2019: Excellent TV, but not worth the price difference over the 2018 Vizio P Series Quantum. See review
