The young gay men jailed for consensual sex in a private home. Using a law from 1533. In 1998.

In 1998, eight months into Tony Blair's government, seven gay and bisexual working-class men from Bolton were convicted at Crown Court of buggery and gross indecency for having consensual sex together in a private home. No victim. No complaint. Some went to prison. All were placed on the sex offenders register. The laws used against them dated back to 1895, and in one case to 1533. Greater Manchester Police, the same force that prosecuted Alan Turing, pursued this case with a fervour no other police force in the country was matching at the time. Almost nobody knows this happened. Hugh Sheehan is the writer and audio producer behind Criminally Queer: The Bolton 7, the five-part BBC Sounds documentary series that spent years in the making and is referenced in Russell T Davies' Channel 4 drama Tip Toe, starring Alan Cumming as a gay bar owner in Manchester's Gay Village. Davies made Tip Toe because, in his words, the fight is back on. He's right. And the Bolton Seven are a significant part of why. In this episode of Outcast World, Graeme and Hugh cover the full story: the centuries-old laws that remained quietly on the books after partial decriminalisation in 1967, the two-man rule that made consensual group sex a criminal act regardless of what straight people were doing, the class dimension that meant working-class men from Bolton had no legal defences that a wealthier man in a privately owned home might have had, and the Chief Constable whose fundamentalist homophobia had shaped Greater Manchester Police for over a decade before the Bolton Seven were ever arrested. Criminally Queer: The Bolton 7 is available on BBC Sounds, Spotify, and Apple Podcasts.

A special episode of TV Gold this week with Andrew Mercado and James Manning joined by author Holden Sheppard, whose best-selling debut novel Invisible Boys was turned into a Stan series. All three have watched Tip Toe and talk about the series, the themes explored, the plot devices and how some critics have had problems with the storytelling. The five-part series on Binge and Foxtel follows Leo and Clive who have lived next door to each other in Manchester for almost 15 years. But just as life should be settling down, the world around them is growing more tense. Words become weapons, opinions become radicalised, and gradually, two neighbours become deadly enemies in a suburban thriller which challenges everything we consider to be safe. Alan Cumming plays Manchester bar owner Leo and David Morrissey is his tradie neighbour Clive. They are supported by a great cast playing lovers, friends, family members and work colleagues. Creator Russell T Davies has the viewer riveted from the chilling opening scene. Picking Show of the Week was easy this week with just one program reviewed. The panel’s unanimous choice – Tip Toe.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Luke returns to join Matt and Dawn to review four new shows available on various platforms this week.  Firstly, Russell T Davies is back with an original drama about modern society called Tip Toe. The series features career-best performances from Alan Cumming and David Morrissey as two men on a dangerous collision course. It's a show with a lot to say about the state of the world today and the dangers of living your life as someone viewed as 'other'. It's such a strong series and the sort of drama Channel 4 should be making, but it does some things that the team often dislikes. Next, a favourite from last year, The Four Seasons, returns for a second season on Netflix. The warm friendship comedy drama, starring Tina Fey, Will Forte and Colman Domingo, follows three sets of couples who holiday together four times a year. Everything we loved about the first season still works and it's just lovely to have a show like this which is warm, engaging, funny and low stakes as this in a television landscape which is still obsessed with thrillers. Next, Australian comic Sam Campbell, who rose to fame through panel show performances and an incredible appearence on Last One Laughing on Prime Video, now has his own comedy series, Make That Movie. The series, which follows Campbell's character, a respected film director and his team as they attempt to make the movie of regular people's ideas. If you are aware of Campbell's comedic style, the series is really surreal and silly, but funny and feels very different to the rest of Channel 4's comedy slate. Lastly, Hacks, a show we've loved since it began, comes to an end. We do a deep dive into the final episode and what made the show work so well.  For our Quiz, Luke tests Matt and Dawn to name as many actors as they can from the Russell T Davies shows.

Brian Cox on Directing Glenrothan, Trusting Your Collaborators, and the Magic of the Edit Filmmakers, you are in for an absolute treat today. We are joined by a true titan of the industry, the legendary Brian Cox. After decades of delivering iconic performances on stage and screen, Brian sits down with us to discuss stepping behind the camera for his highly anticipated feature directorial debut, Glenrothan. Fresh off a phenomenal premiere at TIFF (complete with a massive standing ovation!), Brian breaks down his deeply egalitarian approach to filmmaking. He shares the brilliant story of how his producer, Neil Zegler, flat-out told him he was the only person who could direct this movie, and how he leaned heavily on his DP to bring the vision to life. We dive into the nitty-gritty of the craft: why Brian prioritizes script, story, and actors over rigid shot lists and storyboards, the delicate art of directing yourself and "staying out of your own way," and how assembling a powerhouse cast—including Alan Cumming, Shirley Henderson, and brilliant young talent—elevated the entire production. Plus, he shares some invaluable lessons from the cutting room, including why they had to switch editors and dramatically restructure a crucial waterfall scene. Topic of the Week: Make sure you stick around for the outro, where we break down Brian's philosophy in our Topic of the Week: The Egalitarian Set: Why the Best Directors Don't Micro-Manage. We discuss why letting go of control and trusting your Heads of Department is actually an indie director's greatest superpower. IN THIS EPISODE WE DISCUSS: The Push to Direct: How producer Neil convinced Brian he had to take the helm of Glenrothan. The TIFF Premiere: The emotional experience of screening the film and receiving a standing ovation. The Egalitarian Set: Why Brian threw out rigid storyboards to focus entirely on the script, the story, and the actors. With Chris Hewitt away on an actual holiday, this week's Empire Podcast sees Helen O'Hara slide into the host's chair as she, Ben Travis, and Amon Warmann tackle a hat-trick of listener questions, including musing on male damsels in distress, movies-turned-plays, and the ongoing role of Bluey in saving the world. Then the trio tackle movie news, most of which comes out of this week's CinemaCon, including the revelation that Jamie Dornan, and not Leo Woodall, will be filling Aragorn's boots in The Lord Of The Rings: The Hunt For Gollum. Finally, they review not one but SIX movies, including Lee Cronin's The Mummy, Jonah Hill's Outcome, and Brian Cox's directorial debut, Glenrothan. Speaking of Cox, the legendary Scottish actor pops into the podbooth to have a delightful, and delightfully foul-mouthed, chat with Chris about popping behind the camera at almost 80 years of age, singing Spice Girls with Alan Cumming, and his complicated relationship with Scotland. Oh, and if there are any glaring editing errors on this week's show, it was edited on a cruise ship, so please bear that in mind. Oh, and due to the absence of several key members of personnel, our next Daredevil: Born Again spoiler special will be next week. Sorry about that. In the meantime, enjoy!

Tread Perilously's Doctor Who month continues with a recent episode: "Lux." When The Doctor and Belinda end up in Miami, 1952, they encounter racist policies and a seemingly haunted movie theater with a reclusive caretaker. Once inside, though, it becomes clear what is actually haunting the venue -- a living cartoon called Lux. Sure, he might resemble Mr. Ring-a-Ding, but he has his own aims. Will The Doctor suss out the truth or will he be stuck in an animated Doctor Who forever. And will he ever be able to get Belinda home? For various reasons, Belinda is renamed "Belinder" and Justin is happy to see his favorite revolutionary playing the part. Erik forgets if this is the first or second proper Fifteenth Doctor adventure for Justin. The persistent rumors of on-set troubles during the making of recent Who are outlined. Ncuti Gatwa's dedication to the part on camera is a plus, though. Guest star Alan Cumming also gets his flowers, as does Linus Roache in a surprising role. Accents become an important part of the conversation with contributions from Charlie Cox. Erik continues to think of Paul McCrane as "prominent forehead guy." Justin disagrees with The Doctor's belief that he is Velma and a gaggle of fans agree "Blink" is still the best adventure.

Twenty-five years ago, this high-energy musical adaptation of the both the comic book and TV cartoon was released to much hype....and no one showed up. :( It was a sizeable flop at the box office but has since garned a devoted cult following as a result of its sharp satire and catchy soundtrack.  It's a seemingly simple story about three young ladies from the small town of Riverdale who are just trying to break out with their band, The Pussycats.   They include Josie (Rachael Leigh Cook), Melody (Tara Reid), and Valerie (Rosario Dawson) and one day, they are just toiling to pick up their next gig when they are suddenly discovered by a shady record producer Wyatt (Alan Cumming) who seems something special in them.  They are whisked off to New York City, signed to his label run by the ruthless Fiona (Parker Posey) and overnight, they become a pop sensation now named, "Josie and the Pussycats."  However, their success comes with some unexpected consquences and they soon find themselves embroiled in a massive conspiracy involving the delivery of subliminal messages through pop music. :o Directed by Deborah Kaplan and Harry Elfont (Can't Hardly Wait), this enduring cult hit also co-stars Gabriel Mann, Missi Pyle, and Carson Daly (!)....as you've NEVER seen him before!   Host & Editor: Geoff GershonProducer: Marlene Gershon Send us Fan MailSupport the showhttps://livingforthecinema.com/Facebook:https://www.facebook.com/Living-for-the-Cinema-Podcast-101167838847578Instagram:https://www.instagram.com/livingforthecinema/Letterboxd:https://letterboxd.com/Living4Cinema/

Described by the author as 'a life in four books', Lanark follows the interwoven lives of Lanark and Duncan Thaw through the disintegrating cities of Unthank and Glasgow. The book has garnered widespread praise and critical acclaim for sitting realism and surrealism side by side and for daring to be experimental. The Guardian described the novel as "one of the landmarks of twentieth century fiction" while the Times Literary Supplement said it was "profoundly perceptive about the ways in which our society is destroying itself".This episode was recorded in front of a live audience at the Pitlochry Festival Theatre in February.Producer: Dominic Howell Editor: Gillian Wheelan This is a BBC Audio Scotland production.
