We close out Pride Month this year with a brand-new film (that's technically a remake, but shhhh): The Wedding Banquet, from Fire Island director Andrew Ahn, and starring Bowen Yang, Han Gi-chan, Lily Gladstone, and Kelly Marie Tran as two gay couples who have to try to play it straight. The result is a beautiful (and hilarious) film about found family and queer identity. We'll be on a break for the rest of July, returning in August with our annual Hitchcock coverage (starting with North by Northwest!), but our patrons can continue to listen our Alfred Hitchcock Presents bonus episodes all through July! To join their number (and get some other bonuses as well) you can go to Patreon!
In this episode, Masie & Stuart celebrate pride month by watching Andrew Ahn's 2022 film Fire Island, a loose adaptation of Pride and Prejudice set on the titular gay resort. As queer fans of Jane Austen, our hosts find much to admire in this film's smart adaptation decisions and joyful, but critical examination of gay male community that subverts and examines stereotypes around race, class, and body type. Listen as they gush about the authentic cast of gay actors, recount the film's many good romcom moments, and discuss the parts of the script that could've been cut or used a bit more consideration. Book Vs. Movie: For Pride Month1813's “Pride and Prejudice” Vs. 2022's "Fire Island"June is Pride Month worldwide, and the Margos are excited to celebrate with some of the best LGBTQIA-centric books and movies. One highlight is the 2022 film *Fire Island*, directed by Andrew Ahn and written by Joel Kim Booster. This clever and heartfelt adaptation reimagines Jane Austen's *Pride and Prejudice*. Set during a weeklong summer vacation on the iconic queer retreat of Fire Island, the story follows a close-knit group of gay friends as they navigate romance, class, and identity. Joel Kim Booster plays Noah, a modern-day Elizabeth Bennet figure, while Bowen Yang portrays Howie, who is loosely based on Jane Bennet. The aloof and wealthy Will, played by Conrad Ricamora, serves as the counterpart to Mr. Darcy.Between the classic Austen book and the modern, gay-friendly film, which did we prefer? Photo credit for Bobo: Kristine Cofsky Photography Photo credit for Jeremy: Studio Aviva Welcome to Season 5, Episode 22! It's a 2-for-1 episode! Today we have a two of the stars of the re-imagination of The Wedding Banquet, Bobo Le and Jeremy Hoffman. This modernized version of the Ang Lee's classic film is written and directed by Andrew Ahn. Bobo and Jeremy both come from creative backgrounds. Bobo in dance and martial arts, and Jeremy in music and musical theatre. But lucky for audiences, they've transferred some of that creativity to the screen. In the Wedding Banquet, Bobo plays Kendall, the cousin of Bowen Yang's character. Jeremy plays Marshall the executive director of an LGBTQIA+ non-profit. This is a fun conversation in large part because of the synergy between Bobo and Jeremy. "I'm not afraid. It's the Wizard who should be afraid of me." We watched "Wicked" with our good Judy, Mitchell Anderson, and it was just as good as the first time we watched it! We knew we wanted to review this episode here on our show, and we thought there's no time like the present. Here we are, about halfway between the release of "Wicked" and her upcoming sequel, "Wicked: For Good," so we thought we'd take a look at what makes this movie work so darn well. Obviously, the casting of Cynthia Erivo and Ariana Grande is on point, but the supporting cast - Jonathan Bailey, Michelle Yeoh, Bowen Yang, and company - are all so wonderful, especially under the direction of Jon M. Chu. Allowing so many of them to ad-lib and keeping those gems in the final cut is a genius stroke! We promise to keep the singing to a minimum, but whether we keep that promise is to be seen. Yes, we have some hot takes on the movie itself, but we talk about what's to come in "For Good,” our predictions on how that half of the story will be presented, as well as a couple of fun facts we dug up in our research. Welcome to Weekend Watch, where we give you the heads up on the best new TV shows and movies that have been released this week. This week, we have to talk about the return of one of TV’s most beloved franchises (think apocalypse vibes) and a must-watch comedy series from the creator of Knives Out. Plus, three of our favourite actors, Bowen Yang, Lily Gladstone, and Kelly Marie Tran, have teamed up to star in a new movie, and now we desperately need to discuss it. Along with an unmissable new series starring a very sexy (and crime ridden) Jon Hamm. Read Chelsea Hui's review of The Wedding Banquet:Bowen Yang's new movie will make you want to call your family. Have you heard of the queer dramedy The Wedding Banquet? Kat and Morgan managed to see the queer dramedy starring Bowen Yang, Kelly Marie Tran, Lily Gladstone and Han Gi-Chan during it's VERY short run. We talk about what worked for us, what didn't, and what we thought about that twist. Was one of the characters in a comedy and another in a drama? Is bird watching a real job? We dive into all these questions and more. Plus, we discuss how the release schedule for this movie did it no favors and how studios need to better support queer movies so we can get more of them. We've got the fabulous Parvesh Cheena here, once again on the gaysian movie beat! This time around, it's Andrew Ahn's THE WEDDING BANQUET, which reimagines and modernizes the core story of a nearly unseeable 1993 Ang Lee film (maybe try your local library?). The big question: does this remake justify its existence? They discuss the film's fresh take on LGBTQ+ themes and family dynamics; some of the more questionable but necessary narrative turns; and why Joan Chen and Youn Yuh-jung are Asian American cinema royalty.

It's a massive catch-up episode of the Breakfast All Day podcast. New stuff! Sorta new stuff! And a lengthy movie news segment to cover all the topics we missed during spring break. We begin with a review of the epic "Sinners," one of the year's most anticipated films, which lives up to the hype and more. Ryan Coogler re-teams with his frequent muse, Michael B. Jordan, who plays dual roles as identical twins in 1930s Mississippi. We loved it. In theaters (and see it in IMAX if you can.) Next up is "A Minecraft Movie," which has been out for a couple of weeks but we missed it over vacation. We were surprised how much we enjoyed it (and behaved ourselves during the chicken jockey of it all). In theaters. Next: We review Andrew Ahn's remake of the 1993 Ang Lee arthouse classic "A Wedding Banquet." Bowen Yang, Lily Gladstone and Kelly Marie Tran are among the cast in this romantic comedy about queer couples juggling love and cultural traditions. In theaters. And then, we wanted to include the audio from our "Secret Mall Apartment" review from a couple weeks back. This thoroughly entertaining documentary follows a group of artists who found a hidden spot in the middle of the Providence Place Mall and called it home for several years in the early 2000s. Find out here when it's playing near you: https://secretmallapartment.com/buy-tickets Finally, Movie News LIVE! is back. Lots to discuss, including the new "Fantastic Four" trailer, "The Breakfast Club" reunion, Aimee Lou Wood, Fyre Festival 2 and more. We'll try to be as consistent as possible with news over the busy next couple of months. Thanks for being here! Subscribe to Christy's Saturday Matinee newsletter: https://christylemire.beehiiv.com/
Michael B. Jordan, Michael B. Jordan, and Hailee Steinfeld star in a new vampire thriller now in theaters. “The Wedding Banquet” with Bowen Yang and Lily Gladstone is making waves. A new animated film, “Sneaks”, leads us into sneaker culture, and “Companion” looks just weird enough to be fun. Tom Hanks narrates a nature doc on NBC, and Jessie from “Toy Story” is FINALLY getting her moment. If you're eating a lot of candy this weekend — you're not alone. More people than ever will be at Church on Sunday — but please don't invite Sarah. Plus, you're overpaying for these menu items. Worth it!
Megan is flying solo this week, as Dave and Evan couldn't make it (I miss you two!). First, Megan reviews THE UGLY STEPSISTER (1:54), Emilie Blichfeldt's Norwegian fairy-tale horror film starring Lea Myren and Thea Sofie Loch Næss, which played at this year's Boston Underground Film Festival. With lush costumes and production design, it's a compelling and gruesome Cinderella retelling that critiques beauty standards. Then, Megan talks about THE WEDDING BANQUET (19:25), Andrew Ahn's queer rom-com (a remake of Ang Lee's 1993 film) starring Kelly Marie Tran, Lily Gladstone, Bowen Yang, and Han Gi-chan, about a gay man who offers to marry his lesbian friend to pay for her partner's IVF treatments and so he can get a green card. It's a sweet and tender film with an excellent cast. Lastly, Megan discusses SINNERS (33:41), Ryan Coogler's vampire horror film, starring Michael B. Jordan, Miles Caton, Hailee Steinfeld, and Wunmi Mosaku. Set in the 1930s, it follows two twin brothers opening a juke joint and the evil that follows them. With gorgeous cinematography and a hypnotic score, it's a visceral, moody, and captivating film. And on this week's Patreon bonus episode, Megan talks about two newly streaming 2024 genre movies, one set in the 1980s and one in the 1990s: Kyle Mooney's sci-fi horror comedy Y2K and Joe DeBoer and Kyle McConaghy's horror film DEAD MAIL!
Pedro Pascal says his extended family is asking for too much now that he's super famous, and Bowen Yang had to make a pretty rough deal with his parents in high school so they would let him go to NYU. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices
