As Dragon Con 2025 approaches, the air is thick with anticipation, and at the center of the excitement is the incomparable Charles "Rock God of Podcasting" McFall. Known for his captivating voice, insightful conversations, and passion for all things pop culture, McFall is a podcasting pioneer who has become a beloved figure in the digital media world. He's not just a voice, but a force shaping the conversation around fandom and entertainment. In a recent discussion, McFall offered a glimpse into the incredible plans for Dragon Con 2025. This year, fans can expect an even more immersive and engaging experience, with a focus on expanded gaming, a deeper dive into literature and science, and a star-studded guest list that includes actors from hit shows like The Magicians and Supergirl. McFall's role as the Director of Digital Media at Dragon Con means he's at the forefront of amplifying these voices and bringing the magic of the convention to an even wider audience. Web: https://www.dragoncon.org/ About: Dragon Con, a titan of pop culture conventions, has a rich and fascinating history that reflects the evolution of fandom itself. What began as a small gathering of enthusiasts in a single hotel has blossomed into a multi-venue, multi-genre extravaganza that draws tens of thousands of attendees each year. The Origins: A Small Gathering of Fans (1987-1989) Dragon Con's story begins in 1987 in Atlanta, Georgia. It was founded by a group of local science fiction and gaming fans who were part of an organization called the Dragon Alliance of Gamers and Role-Players (DAGR). The convention was initially a project of this group, with a board of directors that included John Bunnell, David Cody, Robert Dennis, Mike Helba, Pat Henry, and Ed Kramer. The name "Dragon" was inspired by Kramer's home computer, a Dragon 64, which also hosted a bulletin board system that served as a central hub for the group. The inaugural Dragon*Con (as it was originally stylized) was held at the Pierremont Plaza Hotel and attracted a modest 1,400 fans. It featured notable guests like author Michael Moorcock and Dungeons & Dragons co-creator Gary Gygax, and even included a performance by Blue Öyster Cult's Eric Bloom, singing songs inspired by Moorcock. This early convention established a key tradition: a big-tent approach that brought together different facets of geek culture. The event grew quickly. By 1989, with Anne McCaffrey as the Guest of Honor, attendance had more than doubled, prompting a move to the Omni Hotel and Convention Center to accommodate the swelling crowd. Rapid Expansion and Diversification (1990s-2000s) The 1990s and 2000s saw Dragon Con's explosive growth. The convention became known for its "big tent" philosophy, bringing together fans of everything from sci-fi and fantasy to comics, gaming, and anime. Key milestones during this period include: * Move to multiple hotels: As attendance soared, the convention expanded to encompass a cluster of downtown Atlanta hotels, including the Hyatt Regency, Marriott Marquis, and Hilton Atlanta. This interconnected "campus" of hotels, linked by skywalks and bridges, became a hallmark of the Dragon Con experience. * The Parade: The annual Dragon Con Parade down Peachtree Street, a showcase of elaborate and creative cosplay, was first held in 2002. It has since become a beloved and widely recognized part of the convention, drawing thousands of participants and spectators. * Charitable efforts: Dragon Con established a strong charitable component, raising money for various causes. The annual Robert A. Heinlein "Pay It Forward" blood drive, which began in 2002, is consistently one of the largest convention-based blood drives in the country. * Programming: The number of programming tracks and events expanded exponentially, covering a vast range of topics from writing and alternate history to robotics and space science. A New Era: Growth and Refinement (2010s-Present) In 2013, the convention officially dropped the asterisk from its name, becoming "Dragon Con," following a legal restructuring that severed ties with one of the original founders. This marked a new era of management and growth. In recent years, Dragon Con has continued to thrive, reaching a pre-pandemic attendance of over 85,000 in 2019. Post-pandemic, the convention has implemented attendance caps to ensure a safer and more manageable experience for all. While still a massive event, the focus has shifted to maintaining a high-quality experience, with an emphasis on unique programming, engaging workshops, and a strong sense of community. Today, Dragon Con stands as one of the world's premier pop culture conventions. It's a place where fans can not only meet their favorite celebrities and artists but also connect with fellow enthusiasts, celebrate their passions, and immerse themselves in a vibrant, inclusive, and unforgettable weekend of geek culture. Send us a textHi everybody and welcome to Attendance Bias. I am your host Brian Weinstein. After an odd summertime Texas stop in Austin, Phish is keeping us disoriented this year: it's now time for a holiday weekend run in Colorado…but not the one we expect. Instead of the end-of-summer blowout at Dick's over Labor Day Weekend this summer, we are instead celebrating our country's independence with a July 4th weekend party at a college football stadium almost double the size of Dick's: July 3, 4, and 5 at Folsom Field, in Boulder, CO.Today's guest, Bryan from Boulder., has lived in the college town for over 20 years and has a lot to offer Attendance Bias listeners today. While thousands of Phish fans have made Dick's their summer family reunion this year is a change of scenery, not to mention an adjustment to the calendar. When these shows were rumored, and then announced, there were mixed feelings among the fanbase (at least those who made their opinions known online). Bryan explains why there's so much to look forward to in Boulder, and how, in many ways, Folsom Field has a lot to offer, compared to Dick's. But it's not all just a comparison of two Colorado stadiums. There's also the band's history in Boulder, the activities within and around the city, restaurant and brewery recommendations, and more. I think a lot of us are curious about what this run is going to look like, and today's episode might be able to give us some answers to frequently asked Folsom questions. So let's join Bryan from Boulder, longtime resident, to give us the lowdown on what to expect for July 4th weekend at Folsom Field in Boulder, Colorado.

Even though I didn't really want to go, and this thing was way outside my comfort zone, Brad and I signed up for the Respite Retreat scheduled for Labor Day Weekend in September of 2010. We couldn't have known at the time what a profound impact it would have on our lives. Thank you for joining me for another bonus episode in this series in which I've been sharing our family's experiences in the last year of our daughter Hannah's life, which spanned from February 2008 through February 2009. This series would not be complete without a discussion of the ministry which developed out of Hannah's homegoing. If you'll indulge me for a few more bonus episodes, I'd like to share how God used Hannah's storm to birth the While We're Waiting ministry to bereaved parents. As always, my desire is to give glory to God and point listeners to hope in Jesus along the way. I would love to hear your thoughts on the show. SEPT. 1, 1962, WAS an unusually sultry day for the north Oregon coast, and the little beachside resort town of Seaside was crammed with high-school and college kids. They had come from all over the state and beyond for a rowdy, high-spirited end-of-summer Labor Day beach-party weekend that had become almost like a tradition in the postwar years. Something was a little different this year, though. The crowd was larger than usual, for one thing. Actually, it was a lot larger. The first baby-boomers, born in 1946, were 16 years old in 1962 ... and there were a lot of them on the beach that day, and they were a bit wild. Something else that was different that year was the attitude of the Seaside cops. They were being noticeably more hard-nosed than they had been in years past. Seaside had elected a new mayor, Maurice Pysher, a 68-year-old former heating engineer who had retired to Seaside from Portland a couple years before. Pysher didn't like his new town's reputation as a place where kids could blow off steam, and he'd seen that they were getting noticeably rowdier year after year. He wanted visitors to Seaside to be quieter, more respectful, and less rambunctious. So he had fired Seaside's longtime police chief and replaced him with someone who would be more strict and firm about keeping things orderly. The crowds of college kids and high-school students who flocked to town for Labor Day had always been a little high-spirited, and the town's cops had learned to strike a balance with them. They'd be there if somebody really needed help, and they'd stop any actual vandalism or other criminal activity; but they wouldn't accost anyone on the street and hassle them for carrying an open beer, or ticket them for disorderly conduct for getting too loud around a beach bonfire. But, not any more. Today was the start of Labor Day Weekend, 1962. The crowds were enormous, the beer was flowing freely, and the cops had a new attitude. It wouldn't take long for that combination to explode into something close to a worst-case scenario for the town: the first Seaside beach-party riot. Peter Wood emailed about Stubby Shillelaghs: "Hi Mark, I wrote a few years ago about playing the show with my wife in the car on dates and on our wedding day, and now we are expecting our first child. We don't listen to the show together much anymore, but when we go to the Renaissance Faire we played it (just missed you again!) and I put it on when we went for a swim on a summer evening when she wanted music without getting interrupted by YouTube Music ads. Since this year's Renaissance festival she's asked a few times for Tartanic when she's been in the mood for "my" music. Recently I was listening to a different podcast that plays novelty songs around a theme (Bitslap with KBC if you're curious), and the theme of the week was Drinking, so of course some Celtic - sounding music came up, and for part of a set I thought I was listening to your show! Of the two songs in particular that got me confused, the first was the Vodka Song by Stubby Shillelaghs (https://youtu.be/h9YRbJSbPw0) which I'm unsure if it or the band have ever been played on your show. It was followed by Sober on St. Patrick's Day, and at first I thought I might have heard it on your show, but then when it got going I realized it wouldn't have fit in on your family friendly show. Turns out it's by Psychostick. I know you've got ties to the FuMP collective so you're probably already aware of it. The Vodka Song at least would be a fun one to play if you've got the permission." Patrick Rieger emailed photos from Ohio Renaissance Festival: "Hi Marc, My family and I, along with our friend Chenna from Nashville, spent Labor Day Weekend at the Ohio Renaissance Festival, three days of faire. Ohio is a big faire with plenty of celtic musicians, but even with three days we didn't see them all. We did see Captain John Stout (aka Richard Brentar), Donal Hinely, The Harper and the Minstrel, The Toasted Clover, The Jackdaws, Bettina Baudville, Seán Nós, and The Lady Victoria. I had never heard of a nose harmonica until I met Bettina Baudville; that is what she is playing in the photo. Also I never heard celtic music played on a ukulele until I met The Toasted Clover. Donal Hinely was featured on the Renaissance Festival Podcast years ago when you were still a host, but until this year I had not seen or heard him in person." Despite three long days of working the faire, Victoria was able to join us for a quick dinner one night. And before the weekend was done, the four of us already planned to go back next year."

The Mindful Healers Podcast with Dr. Jessie Mahoney and Dr. Ni-Cheng Liang
Gratitude is much more complex than looking on the bright side. Gratitude and mindfulness often feel overused in wellness conversations. They are often thrown out as the answer to just about everything. Synonyms for gratitude include appreciation, thankfulness, acknowledgment, recognition, credit, regard, and respect. Interestingly gratitude is also listed as a synonym for a sense of obligation and indebtedness. For many practicing gratitude leads to feelings of guilt. There are many things many of us think we should be grateful for. In the face of the recent bomb cyclone atmospheric river, I felt a sense of true deep gratitude. A feeling that was very different than what I have previously felt when keeping a gratitude list or when gratitudes were shared at huddles or before a meal. This gratitude felt like a deep sense of peace. It was not a feeling that could be practiced. When you feel truly grateful, you feel a deep sense of wellness, connection, and healing. Your brain releases positive neurotransmitters like dopamine and serotonin, which contribute to the feeling of contentment- even amidst a storm. Science shows gratitude can help to counteract negative thinking patterns and reduce rumination on negative experiences. It also enhances your ability to cope with stress and challenges by providing a more optimistic perspective. Grateful people tend to be more empathetic and express appreciation towards others, which leads to stronger and more positive relationships. Studies show that practicing gratitude can also improve sleep quality. Beyond gratitude, mindfulness offered many helpful tools for navigating through a historic storm with more grace and ease. Listen to hear what, why, and how attention, intention, self compassion and kindness, and acceptance can help. What are you grateful for? What are you appreciative of? Do you have any “should be grateful” thoughts? Move beyond consuming this amazing podcast. True change happens when you work with us virtually and/or in-person. Games have always been central to the human experience, shaping the way we think, interact, and understand the world. This week, as part of our Authors in August series, David welcomes back philosopher C. Thi Nguyen to explore the deeper implications of games in our lives. From ancient pastimes to modern video games, we delve into why games matter, how they reflect our agency, and what they teach us about ourselves. With his book Games: Agency as Art, Nguyen reveals the profound ways games act as a form of artistic expression and how they can even influence the way we navigate life's challenges. Whether you're a dedicated gamer or simply curious about the philosophical underpinnings of play, this conversation offers insights that extend far beyond the gaming table. Also, this is a reminder that our August Mailbag episode drops this Saturday. Whether you're on the road for Labor Day Weekend or just relaxing at home, be sure to tune in, our 106th consecutive monthly mailbag will be there for you! The Bald and the Beautiful with Trixie Mattel and Katya Zamo
It's almost Labor Day Weekend and I know what you're thinking to yourself: I need a sun-soaked, sand-covered gay resort town and I need it RIGHT NOW. Well, you're in luck. Scarlet Envy would like you to know that if you've never been to Fire Island, getting there is half the fun. What you're gonna want to do is take the Long Island Rail Road to Sayville, then a shuttle bus to a 30-minute ferry ride, and then you're going to have to walk that perky little ass because there are no cars on the island; just wooden boardwalks and shirtless hunks pulling little red wagons full of groceries, poppers, and lube. And while you're visiting, don't miss the small strip of forest lovingly known as the "Meat Rack". While there is no barbeque served at the Meat Rack, sausage is most assuredly on the menu.
