Forest Benedict, LMFT - Porn Is Not the ProblemDivorced: Evangelical ChristianityCW: Frank discussion of porn, sex, and self-pleasureForest Benedict is a Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist in California and Washington states who specializes in religious trauma and sexual shame. Forest began his career as a Christian who was passionate about helping others recover from sex and porn addiction—believing at the time that he was in recovery himself. He became a leading voice in the “anti-pornography movement,” and served as the Clinical Director of a sex addiction treatment program and trained pastors and therapists in a sex addiction certification program. Since deconverting from Christianity, Forest has dramatically shifted his focus to helping those wounded by religious systems reclaim their sexuality and authentic sense of self. Today, he offers online therapy through his private practice and also works online with Storm Haven Counseling & Wellness in Temecula, California. Forest is active on social media and regularly shares insights through his blog.FIND FOREST: Website: ForestBenedict.com Instagram: @ForestBenedictLMFTFIND JANICE:Janice Selbie's Best-selling book Divorcing Religion: A Memoir and Survival Handbook is now available in the USA https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0DP78TZZF and CANADA https://www.amazon.ca/dp/B0DP78TZZFRecordings are available for the Shameless Sexuality: Life After Purity Culture conference 2025! Forest Benedict is a licensed Marriage & Family Therapist, Sexual Addiction Treatment Provider (SATP), and the author of the book, Life After Lust: Stories & Strategies for Sex & Pornography Addiction Recovery. Forest Benedict has taken his practice online! He lives in Washington State but conducts therapy sessions in California, where he is licensed. He discusses how online therapy differs from in-person therapy and what might be the best options for you. TAKEAWAYS: [2:50] Can you do therapy online? [5:40] Therapists need to consider both the legal and technical part. [6:45] Dr. Rob struggles with where to look at the patient. Should he look into the camera or on the screen where he sees the patient? [8:00] What kinds of concerns do patients bring to Forest about having counseling online? [10:10] What are some of the advantages of doing therapy online? [12:30] Forest does notice a difference between hosting virtual sessions with older clients vs. younger clients. [14:45] Dr. Rob recognizes that you’re talking about intimacy issues in a very non-intimate space, meaning, the online world. It’s a bit of a contradiction. [15:30] Some patients feel like when they go to see a sex addiction therapist in person, they might be outed by someone they know. By doing it online, it can be much more discrete. [17:30] Because of what’s happening in the world, the therapy world will never be the same again. Therapists are being asked to help in any way they can. [19:15] Does Forest also do couple’s therapy online? [21:05] Why did Forest decide to move his business online? [24:05] Should patients go with an in-person session or an online session if they liked the therapist equally? RESOURCES: The Porn Panic: Is Porn a ‘Public Health Crisis’? Sex and Relationship Healing @RobWeissMSW Sex Addiction 101 Seeking Integrity Cruise Control: Understanding Sex Addiction in Gay Men Prodependence: Moving Beyond Codependency Forestbenedict.com QUOTES: “Just because it’s [dealing with technology] difficult or new, doesn’t mean it’s not helpful.” “When I go to recovery meetings, it’s almost always majority men, especially when dealing with intimacy and sex issues. But when you go online, there are all women. They feel safer.” “I would invite you to try an online session to see if it’s a good fit or not.” “The convenience aspect of attending an online session is very different. One client said it was so much more cost-effective and time-effective.”
Recovery resources are fully online and this is great news for many reasons. Whether you’re anxious about leaving the house due to the current pandemic or too shy to walk in the door of a meeting or professional’s office, online help is a convenient option. In this episode, sex addiction specialist Forest Benedict shares from his experience as a fully online therapist and coach. We will discuss the benefits and limitations of working recovery online and how this modality can strengthen, connect, and inspire those who participate use it. Listeners will also learn how they can get help if they want to self-isolate due to the Coronavirus. Forest will share about his current Life After Lust program in California and the upcoming worldwide launch of his Heroes in Recovery coaching program. You don’t want to miss this relevant and timely conversation.

Life After Lust is unlike any recovery book available today. It guides the reader into intentional personal growth but also frames the pursuit of a meaningful life as a byproduct of succerssful recovery. Carol the Coach interviews Forest Benedict author of Life After Lust: Stories and Strategies for Sex and ography Addiction Recovery. He has a 52 week plan that helps navigate addicts into healthy recovery and healthy living! This show will help to change your life!
Carol the Coach interviews Forest Benedict who is a therapist who specializes in the treatment of sexual addiction. The perspective that guides his work is attachment theory. From this viewpoint, sexual addiction is an attachment or intimacy disorder. When a secure attachment to a caregiver is not developed in early life, a person is more susceptible to addiction. In his book “Addiction as an Attachment Disorder”, Flores states it this way: “No one ever escapes their need for satisfying relationships, and the degree to which we are unable to form healthy interpersonal intimacy determines the degree to which we are vulnerable to substitute [addiction] for human closeness.” In this show he explains that when you combine this lack of relational trust with the opportunity for a mood-altering experience, such as using ography, it becomes a formula for creating a powerful connection with a non-relational entity. Over time, this can become a person’s primary method of relieving stress, soothing sadness, calming anger, and managing other moods. Looking at addiction through this attachment lens, one of the primary sources of healing is choosing to disconnect from addiction while simultaneously learning to connect in safe relationships. From this standpoint, healing means much more than mere abstinance or “sobriety”. That is why specific, daily exercises as well as other recovery components are recommended for deep, long-term recovery. Listen as Foresrt Benedict shares exercises to get you closer to the intimacy you deserve!
