In this episode of The Codependent Doctor, I am excited to present part two of our miniseries on addictions, focusing specifically on the transformative power of 12-step programs. Whether you're familiar with Alcoholics Anonymous or simply curious about the principles behind these programs, this episode is designed to provide valuable insights for everyone—whether you're on your own recovery journey, supporting someone else, or just looking to learn more.We begin by exploring the origins of 12-step programs, which date back to the 1930s with the founding of Alcoholics Anonymous by Bill Wilson and Dr. Bob Smith. Their journey of mutual support laid the groundwork for a model that has since helped millions worldwide. At the heart of these programs are the 12 steps, a series of actions that guide individuals through understanding their problems, taking accountability, and finding healing.I break down the first three steps, emphasizing the importance of surrender, hope, and trust. Step one involves admitting powerlessness over addiction and recognizing that life has become unmanageable. This step is often the hardest for many, as it requires a deep level of honesty and acceptance. Step two encourages individuals to believe in a power greater than themselves, fostering hope and openness to change. Step three is about making a conscious decision to turn one's will and life over to this higher power, emphasizing the need to let go of control. As we delve deeper into the steps, I discuss steps four through nine, which focus on accountability and making amends. These steps encourage self-reflection, vulnerability, and the willingness to take responsibility for past actions. I share personal anecdotes to illustrate the emotional challenges and profound growth that can come from this process. The final steps—ten through twelve—center on spiritual growth and service. I highlight the importance of ongoing self-awareness, connecting with a higher power, and sharing one's journey with others. The power of community and shared experiences in 12-step programs is a recurring theme, as it provides a supportive environment where individuals can feel understood and accepted.Throughout the episode, I address common myths and misconceptions about 12-step programs, such as the belief that they require religious affiliation or that they are only for those with substance addictions. I emphasize that these programs are adaptable and can be beneficial for anyone facing various challenges in life. While I celebrate the effectiveness of 12-step programs, I also acknowledge that they may not be for everyone. I touch on alternative recovery methods that will be explored in the next episodeSend us a text

Join Joe McDonald as he delves into Steps 10 and 11 of Alcoholics Anonymous, discussing the concept of a daily reprieve and the importance of maintaining our spiritual condition. Joe explains that we are not cured of alcoholism or addictive disorders; instead, the goal is to restore our identity and maintain a connection to our Higher Power. The journey is about walking in the truth of who we are and whose we are. Our reprieve from addiction is temporary, contingent on daily spiritual growth and deepening our conscious contact with a Higher Power. In Alcoholics Anonymous, Step 10 involves continuing to take personal inventory and promptly admitting when we're wrong, while Step 11 focuses on improving our conscious contact with our Higher Power through prayer and meditation. Joe emphasizes that the maintenance of our spiritual condition is key to our recovery, and without it, we risk slipping back into old behaviors. To support and learn from journeys like Joe McDonald, please like, comment, and share. Send one way text to Rev Rachel Today's episode is inspired by this question from an anonymous member of the Recover Your Soul Facebook community. "My spouse is currently sober and I want to know, how and when can I talk about things that he had done while under the influence that were immensely painful to me, without seeming like I'm shaming him. What would be the best approach?" Reading from 'How Al-Anon Works for Friends and Families of Alcoholics', Rev Rachel reflects on the importance of compassionate communication and using the Soul Recovery process to heal from difficult and painful life experiences. We can not change the past, however, we can work to let go of the pain and resentment that those experiences have been for us in our lives and relationships and learn how to communicate in healthy and open ways. Send one way text to Rev Rachel In this episode, we dive deep into the profound question: "Who do you need me to be to love me?" Inspired by a quote from Kortney Rivard on Tiny Buddha, I explore how we often shape-shift in relationships to gain love and acceptance, abandoning our own needs and truth in the process. Through the lens of Soul Recovery, we'll talk about breaking free from the patterns of codependency and self-abandonment, and how to show up authentically in our relationships with a compassionate, strong, and empowered voice. Send one way text to Rev Rachel Have you ever wondered what it truly means to reclaim your personal power? The focus is on the transformative power of turning inward and embracing personal responsibility to foster growth and empowerment. We explore the detrimental effects of the blame game on our lives and relationships. I share heartfelt personal stories to illustrate the importance of Soul Recovery, internal forgiveness, and raising our consciousness. By shifting our focus from external validation to internal healing, we can detach from restrictive expectations and reclaim our personal power. The episode underscores the strength that comes from releasing blame and connecting with our true selves and a higher source. We'll discuss how letting go of past traumas and adopting love and compassion can heal us and strengthen our boundaries. This transformation can reduce the suffering caused by our disapproval and pave the way for more fulfilling lives.Join others on the Soul Recovery journey on Monday July 1st from 6-7PM on Zoom for the FREE Soul Recovery Support Group. This month we will be talking about 'Criticism and Judgement.' I will give a brief talk, open for questions and then we will break into small groups. Send Rev Rachel a Text Message!!!! What do you love and what would you like to hear more about? These promises were a seed planted in me by my neighbor years before I was ready for true Soul Recovery- but they spoke to what I wanted so desperately in my life and offered me a life line to what I could have if I was ready to do the work. 6 years later, I have indeed found a new freedom and a new happiness through Soul Recovery- and sobriety, and I am grateful. The episode ends with a song I wrote about this journey- if you want to watch the music video check the Recover Your Soul YouTube page For more information about Rev. We are going to know a new freedom and a new happiness. We will not regret the past nor wish to shut the door on it. We will comprehend the wordserenity and we will know peace. No matter how far down the scale we have gone, wewill see how our experience can benefit others. That feeling of uselessness and self-pitywill disappear. We will lose interest in selfish things and gain interest in our fellows. Selfseeking will slip away. Our whole attitude and outlook on life will change. Fear of peopleand economic insecurity will leave us. We will intuitively know how to handle situationswhich used to baffle us. We will suddenly realize that God is doing for us what we couldnot do for ourselves. Are these extravagant promises? We think not. Send Rev Rachel a Text Message!!!! What do you love and what would you like to hear more about?Have you ever felt like a ship lost in a storm, seeking the lighthouse of inner peace? My own voyage through the tumultuous seas of alcoholism and codependency has led me to the serene shores of Soul Recovery, thanks in no small part to the guiding lights of Al-Anon. In today's heartfelt episode, we navigate the transformative journey to serenity, discussing the significance of embracing discomfort and the power in releasing the compulsion to mend others. I open up about the spiritual tools and daily practices that have shifted my perceptions, allowing me to rediscover a sense of identity and connection that lies within us all. Inspired by the teachings of Al-Anon, we learn to foster peace through spirituality and a bond with a higher power, understanding that true growth comes from within. We weigh the concept of personal responsibility, learning the art of detaching from the outcomes of others' actions, and instead making intentional choices that nurture our well-being. Have you ever found yourself intertwined in the chaos of other people's lives, trying to fix them, only to realize you've neglected your own growth? Inspired by Karen Casey's transformative work, "Let Go Now: Embrace Detachment as a Path to Freedom" and her mediation on how detachment is not making others a 'project', this episode dives into the delicate balance of codependency, self-esteem, and the courage to ask for what we need without apology by turning to your own needs first. We'll explore the complexities of detachment and the significance of allowing ourselves and others the space to face our challenges, grow, and heal. For more information about Rev. Recover Your Soul: A Spiritual Path to a Happy and Healthy Life
In this episode I speak to the intricate and emotional world of parenting adult children, especially those navigating their own battles with mental health and addiction. It's a tender topic, one that resonates deeply with my personal journey - as a mother watching her sons face life's harsh trials and the necessity of letting go for the benefit of everyone involved. In our time together, I'll share with you the pains and joys of releasing our children into the world, of seeing them not just as our 'kids' but as the adults they are growing into. I'll speak about the difficult path to detachment, the role our own healing plays not just for personal peace but for empowering those we love, and the societal perspectives that have shifted dramatically in how we envision independence for the new generation. I will explore the balance between caring and controlling, between influencing and accepting, and ultimately, how every step we take in our Soul Recovery can free us from suffering and lead us towards a life filled with happiness and health.
