Some social structures can hold us for a time, but if they don't expand as we grow, they eventually become suffocating and cause more harm than good. The decision to step out of that container can feel destabilizing, but it opens you up to a deeper sense of self-trust and allows you to see your own growth with more clarity. In part two of my conversation with licensed therapist Kendra Hill, we explore her Religious Trauma Checklist and discuss how naming these patterns can help you recognize the progress you've already made, and continue unraveling religious trauma with love. If you haven't listened to part one yet, make sure to start there. Here's what we cover:Why it can feel like the rug has been pulled out from under you when you lose religious certaintyHow trauma reorganizes your inner world and why old structures eventually stop workingThe grief of outgrowing a belief system or community that once felt like homeKendra's “soup” metaphor for rejecting everything before reclaiming what still fitsWhat it looks like to rebuild self-trust and walk away from environments that don't honor youKendra Hill is a neurodivergent artist, beauty seeker, exvangelical, and believer in people. Was Jesus kind of a stand-up comedian?I mean think about it... A priest, a rabbi, and Jesus walked into a bar. Only Jesus recognized the setup for a joke. I never really thought about Jesus being funny or not. I mean, we've heard the stories 1000 times and... I usually smile at the funnier parts, but I never exactly said, Jesus is really funny! Then I found a little book that really opened my eyes.I will share that with you today as we talk about how funny, profoundly funny, Jesus was. People-pleasing and codependent tendencies often stem from a religious upbringing. In my own journey of unraveling those behaviors, I've had to confront what I was taught to believe about God, obedience, and how “being good” kept me in line. In part one of my conversation with licensed therapist Kendra Hill, we define religious trauma and explore how fear, bypassing, and chronic self-surveillance get wired into us. Here's what we cover:Why many women feel terrified to stop people pleasing when religion is involved How growing up with a fear of divine punishment can shape your nervous systemThe difference between religious trauma and religious hurtHow spiritual bypassing teaches us to ignore our emotionsWhat happens when you're taught to trust authority instead of trusting yourselfKendra Hill is a neurodivergent artist, beauty seeker, exvangelical, and believer in people. Most of us were taught some version of the same story: Good women are modest. Quiet. Selfless. Desire is dangerous. Pleasure is suspicious. But that story is not holy. It is a tool of control. In this conversation, I sit down with my dear friend Dr. Kimberly Rose Pendleton - intimacy scholar, coach, and former evangelical insider - to talk about how purity culture, patriarchy, and religion have shaped our bodies, our bedrooms, our marriages, and our sense of worth as women. We speak about the heartbreak of watching purity culture move from private dogma into national policy...while raising daughters in the midst of it. And we name something I see every day in my work: women who are exhausted from doing it all, flirting with "trad wife" fantasies, simply because they're desperate for one place to finally surrender. Inside this episode, we explore: How purity culture quietly trains women to disconnect from their bodies, their desire, and their pleasure. Why so many powerful women secretly fantasize about being dominated - and what's really underneath those fantasies. The rise of "trad wife" culture and the hidden longing for safety and rest that makes it so seductive. How to hold both: being a woman in her full power and having a place to soften, lean back, and be cherished. What happens in our marriages when we stop dimming, start telling the truth, and allow our identities to expand. Why your pleasure is not frivolous - it is a form of spiritual and political rebellion that liberates everyone, including the men you love. This conversation is for the woman who feels a million miles away from her own body...the woman who is quietly wondering, "Is it selfish to want more?" It is not selfish. It is your birthright. If this episode stirs something within you, share it with another woman who is ready to step out of martyrdom and into her own aliveness. What does it feel like to experience religious trauma? Why is it so hard to put the experience into words? What do we need to be aware of in the church when it comes to how people experience our spaces, our teachings, our behaviour? In this episode, Anna brings some reflections from her own journey, and recent research into the phenomenon of religious trauma. A challenging but important conversation for us to wrestle with in the church.
Turns out you don't need a seminary degree, holy water, or even basic mental health literacy to perform an exorcism — you just need confidence, cash flow, and a total disregard for the DSM-5. While Catholic exorcisms lean theatrical and ritualistic, the Protestant version goes full freelancer energy: zero oversight, no training, and absolutely no refunds. This is the Etsy marketplace of demon removal, and the vibes are… exactly what you think. In the finale of our Exorcist trilogy, we unpack the evangelical evolution of “demon hunting,” where faith healing crosses into LARPing, trauma gets rebranded as spiritual warfare, and grifters discover the extreme profitability of exploiting untreated mental illness. From 18th-century Anglican barkers and Victorian nail-vomiters to modern prosperity pastors, online exorcism courses, and “pray the gay away” violence, we follow the money, the mythology, and the body count.TL;DR: When religion meets capitalism, demons become a business model.New to Satan Is My Superhero? This episode is different. It's sacred. The Transgender Day of Remembrance is a day to honor and remember the transgender people whose lives were stolen by violence, hatred, and neglect. We wish we didn't need a day like this. We wish the world were already safe and affirming for our trans family and friends. But the reality is, many lives are lost each year—and too often, those lives are ignored, erased, or dismissed. So today, we stop. We pause. We remember. We honor. Bunnie Xo sits down with Pastor Kimberly Jones for a powerful conversation about faith, redemption, and breaking generational patterns. Kimberly opens up about growing up in a strict Pentecostal home, the religious trauma she carried, and the years she spent running from the church. She shares her battle with addiction, her experience navigating multiple marriages, and the rock-bottom moments that ultimately led to her transformation.Kim reflects on the unlikely journey from a party girl who rejected religion to a pastor inspired by Rod Parsley's ministry. She talks about the criticism she's faced from the church, the role her father played in supporting her recovery, and how her early motivational videos paved the way for her platform today. Kimberly also gets candid about marrying a man she met on Facebook who later betrayed her, and how that heartbreak fueled her growth.Throughout the episode, she highlights the themes central to her ministry—self-love, forgiveness, resilience, and authenticity—and shares how her church has evolved along with her. You are talking about this and then it happens: someone pulls out a Bible verse and declares that God is against transgender people. You've heard it from pulpits, from politicians, maybe from your own family. But, Beloved, here's the truth: the Bible does NOT say what these people claim it does. In fact, what the Bible does say about this is actually fully affirming! So today, we dig in and set the record straight about what the Bible doesn't say, what it does say, and why this matters so much right now!Send us a private message. *Note: INCLUDE YOUR EMAIL ADDRESS if you'd like us to answer. :-) Support the show

Politicians and pundits have made trans rights one of their top wedge issues. They stir up outrage, and push legislation designed to divide, distract, and control. We've all seen it: bills banning gender-affirming care, bathroom access, policing pronouns, especially in state legislations. Leaders pushing them claim it's about “protecting children” or “upholding values.” But, it's not! This is about consolidating power through fear. And while trans people feel the sting of this, the harm doesn't stop with them. It ripples outward, touching every one of us.Because when anti-trans rhetoric spreads, it erodes compassion, truth, and freedom—for everyone.Send us a private message. *Note: INCLUDE YOUR EMAIL ADDRESS if you'd like us to answer. :-) Support the show

Jesus' message was clear: the kingdom of God is here and now. His anger burned toward those in power who oppressed the vulnerable. His focus was justice, compassion, and service — NOT personal salvation formulas.Yet so much of today's theology on LGBTQ issues, sin, salvation, and authority doesn't come from Jesus at all — it comes from Paul.So we ask: are Christians really following Paul instead of Jesus?Send us a private message. *Note: INCLUDE YOUR EMAIL ADDRESS if you'd like us to answer. :-) Support the show
Dr. Sarah Farrell - Shattering Into a WholeDivorced: Christian Fundamentalism Sarah M. Farrell, PhD, MSW, LICSW is a researcher, academic, and clinical social worker (who sometimes fancies herself a stand-up comedian). She has over a decade of clinical practice experience with diverse clientele. Having grown up in a deeply insular religious group practicing evangelical fundamentalism, she focuses both on seeking empirical knowledge and shedding light on stories that have been held back for too long. Systemic injustice within the church is perpetuated by lack of resources and lack of access to knowledge with which to make informed choices. She seeks to do what she can to be the voice she lacked. Her research seeks to answer questions about what has happened and what can change for the better. Today, Sarah shares about growing up in an insular religious group and how she came to understand her experiences were outside the norm while attending college. Her slow but steady deconstruction was also influenced by changes in the political landscape.FIND DR. What if the mental health crisis isn't just a medical problem—but a spiritual one being treated with the wrong tools? In this paradigm-shifting episode, Beatty Carmichael reveals how he's helped over 1,000 people find freedom from conditions labeled as mental illness, chronic pain, and addiction—often within 24 hours—by addressing what he calls the "spiritual roots" of suffering. After God took away his supernatural healing gift that worked 90% of the time, Carmichael was forced to develop a systematic approach that anyone can learn. Watch as he demonstrates his Prayer of Freedom process live with Dr. McFillin, producing real-time results that challenge everything we think we know about healing. Whether you're struggling with anxiety, depression, chronic pain, or simply curious about the intersection of spirituality and health, this conversation offers a radically different perspective on why traditional approaches may be failing—and what actually works when we address the invisible forces at play.About Beatty Carmichael:Beatty Carmichael is a former business executive who comes from seven generations of medical doctors. After 25 years in marketing and helping real estate agents generate listings, his life took an unexpected turn when God gave him a gift of healing that resulted in 90% of people he prayed for experiencing instant relief from conditions ranging from chronic pain to mental illness. When God removed this gift to teach him how to systematize the process, Carmichael developed The Prayer of Freedom—a step-by-step guide that enables anyone to address the spiritual roots of their suffering. He is the founder of Get Radical Faith Ministries, reaching audiences worldwide through live events, podcasts, and video broadcasts. Carmichael regularly teaches at one of America's largest addiction recovery centers, where he's documented an 87% success rate using his methods. His unique approach bridges the gap between ancient spiritual wisdom and practical application, offering hope to those who've found limited relief through conventional treatments.Beatty Carmichael Website Visit Center for Integrated Behavioral HealthDr. Roger McFillin / Radically Genuine WebsiteYouTube @RadicallyGenuineDr. Roger McFillin (@DrMcFillin) / XSubstack | Radically Genuine | Dr. Roger McFillinInstagram @radicallygenuineContact Radically GenuineConscious Clinician CollectivePLEASE SUPPORT OUR PARTNERS15% Off Pure Spectrum CBD (Code: RadicallyGenuine)10% off Lovetuner click here

Yes, fear is loud. But truth is louder. Prejudice is crumbling. Walls are falling. Pastors are rethinking long-held beliefs. Parents are choosing their child over false doctrine. This is what faith is meant to be. Not about fear. Not about control. Religious trauma occurs when a person's religious experiences cause deep emotional, psychological, or spiritual harm. It can stem from controlling or fear-based beliefs, strict religious environments, or experiences of shame and rejection tied to faith. This kind of trauma often affects how people see themselves, others, and even the world around them—leaving lasting wounds that take time, compassion, and understanding to heal.Mormonish is joined by religious trauma coaches Bill Reel and Teresa Hobbs to explore systems in place to move beyond religious trauma to a healthier life.Thank you so much for watching Mormonish Podcast!***How to DONATE to Mormonish Podcast: If you would like to help financially support our podcast, you can DONATE to support Mormonish Podcast here: Mormonish Podcast is a 501(c) (3) https://donorbox.org/mormonish-podcast ****WE HAVE MERCH! **** If you'd like to purchase Mormonish Merch, you can visit our Merch store here: https://www.etsy.com/shop/mormonishmerch We appreciate our Mormonish viewers and listeners so much! The message was delivered on Sunday, October 13, 2025, at All Souls Unitarian Church in Tulsa, Oklahoma, by Rev. Dr. Marlin Lavanhar, Senior Minister. When suffering strikes the innocent, where is divine justice? Throughout history, religions have offered comforting explanations—karma, God's plan, divine purpose—yet reality tells a different story. A mother loses her son to war, a child is taken by a drunk driver, families lose everything to circumstance beyond their control. If goodness cannot shield us from tragedy, is God a cosmic accountant, an indifferent force, or something we've misunderstood entirely? Through the ancient struggle of Job and the raw experiences of those who have faced life's cruelest inequities, discover why the question "why?" may not be the only question to ask—and what response actually matters when faith confronts unfairness. National #comingout day has come and gone and we are here to re-surface some of what we navigated when coming out. How did we go from husband to wife - who did we tell first? What was our biggest fear in saying it out loud? These are just a few of the things we touch on in this episode. No matter what stage of the process you're in - keep going - and remember, coming out has no timeline.
Ever noticed how many people have been walking away from church? Pastors. Musicians. Friends. Maybe even your kids. Maybe even you. Here's the truth—people don't usually leave because they stopped believing. They leave because they've been hurt. By hypocrisy. By spiritual abuse. By a version of Christianity that forgot the Gospel isn't “try harder”… it's “It is finished.” This week's message is for the wounded and the ones who want to help— its and answer for those who've been hurt by the church, and those of us who need to repent for how we've misrepresented Jesus.
Inspired by Mandy Patinkin's famous Princes Bride quote, this episode explores what it means to live after the struggle, after the heartache, after healing. “I've been in the revenge business so long, now that it is over, I don't know what to do with the rest of my life.” What happens when the struggle is over, when the story you have lived by for so long, no longer fits? Amy Logan, certified coach and creator of The Wildflower Sessions, invites you into an honest conversation about identity, release and the power of choosing peace after pain. This is an episode for anyone who has ever wondered, “What now?" https://www.amyloganlife.com/store/p/wildflowersessions
If you've ever walked away from a church experience carrying more wounds than hope, you're not alone. In today's episode, I sit down with my friend Mia Elliott who shares her powerful story of growing up in a rigid, rule-based faith and how God gently led her into something deeper — a real, rich relationship with Jesus.Mia opens up about religious trauma, the ache of church hurt, and what it looked like to rediscover the heart of God after disappointment. Her story reminds us that healing doesn't mean walking away from faith, sometimes it means finally meeting Jesus outside the performance and pressure. If you've been hurt by people in the name of religion or you're wondering if faith can ever feel safe again, this conversation will breathe hope right where you are.To connect with Mia, head over to @themiaelliott and @wasthattoomuchpodcast on IG!Listen to Mia's podcast here: https://linktr.ee/themiaelliott?fbclid=PAZXh0bgNhZW0CMTEAAaeoBLz2_1-LSRxKkEd5h_HD8Y2iGDzPdGnSWK1n80o33jhrZ6h3zPkQ6_j0sQ_aem_TVjBAlq3GM8RU2noTCy30g SUPPORT BY WORDS: https://buymeacoffee.com/bywordsSHOP MY BOOKS:Waking Up: Living Open — https://amzn.to/3LusgrzLove Is Devotional — https://amzn.to/3S6OZhs FREE Path to Purpose Guide: https://hannahhughes.myflodesk.com/pathwaytopurpose My favorite Bible studies + devotionals - HANNAHHUGHES10 for 10% off: https://thedailygraceco.com?dt_id=300773 Connect: www.thehannahhughes.comInstagram: https://www.instagram.com/thehannahhughes/ https://www.instagram.com/bywordspodcast Shop my Amazon faves: https://www.amazon.com/shop/thehannahhughes
Ryan and Alex are joined by Ryan's eldest brother, Chris Jr., to dive into childhood memories, the weight of religious and social suppression, and the journey of breaking free. They explore the existential shock of encountering supernatural beings, the search for understanding God, and the practice of praying for orbs to appear. Along the way, Chris Jr. reflects on lessons from his father and even swap stories about the lighter side of life, like paintball.

I felt like I was always being measured to be either perfect or not good enough, and that created the foundation for how I spoke to myself later in life. I explored how all-or-nothing thinking, perfectionism, internalized shame, and low self-worth all tie together to create the perfect storm. Last week, we talked about healing—the kind that doesn't just change us, but changes the world. The healing that makes us more kind, more loving, more empathetic. But here's the truth: while we're doing this sacred work, there is a battle raging around us. A relentless stream of fear, attacks, and psychological warfare designed to wear us down, to make us give up hope.So how do we stand strong in the middle of all that? How do we keep our hearts from breaking under the weight of it?Today, I have a story for you. It's not just powerful—it's one of the most powerful stories I've ever heard about finding courage, resilience, and unshakable love in the face of fear. Send us a textWhat happens when faith becomes fear, and rules replace love? In this powerful conversation, Joey Pinz sits down with Michela Giordano Castro — Licensed Clinical Social Worker, trauma-informed therapist, and spirituality coach — to explore how people can heal religious trauma and rediscover authentic spirituality.Raised in a strict Christian household, Michela shares her transformative journey: from missionary life in Italy, to her father's crisis of faith, to her own decade-long disconnection from spirituality. Today, she helps others deconstruct toxic beliefs, reconnect with themselves, and cultivate what she calls “blisscipline” — discipline rooted in joy and self-love rather than shame.
How are you doing? Many of us are wondering, with the barrage of news and developments, what do we do? Beloved, our job is really not to save the world because we can't do that, not in the way we think. So, what CAN we do?We can help save the world in a different way. We can do our own work and move ourselves into more spiritual openness and maturity, to grow and do the healing work that's inside of us to do. And that's no small thing! Collectively, that's the best thing we can do to save the world because it helps us be more kind, more empathetic, more loving. Worry and Rumination are part of being human, but they can also keep us stuck in endless loops of “what ifs” and “should haves.” In this episode, I explore the subtle differences between worry (future focused) and rumination (past focused), why our brains default to these patterns and how they drain our energy. I will also share simple ways to notice when you have slipped into the loop and gentle steps you can take to begin quieting the noise. amyloganlife.com
