With a focus on simplicity, minimalism and human-powered adventure, Nick Russell embodies what it is to be a free-spirited, big line splitboarder while making a living at it. Russell has eschewed guidebooks for true adventure, hunting for big lines and pow based more on a feeling than a calculation. This organic approach to becoming an expert in the backcountry takes years and more than a couple sandbag missions, but in the process creates a deeper connection with the land and with his comrades. Russell's most recent mission, captured in the Patagonia Films feature Papsura – Peak of Evil, along with his partner Jerry Mark and filmers Morgan Shields and Blake Gordon, claimed a first splitboard descent on an iconic line in the Indian Himalaya, a month-long mission that exceeded all expectations – a rare occurrence PowBot refers to as “The Jerry Effect”, related to the late Jerry Garcia. The boys also chat about the state of public lands in the midst of an onslaught against government agencies, with Russell encouraging listeners to call (202) 224 3121 and tell your local elected officials what you think about the drastic cuts against the Forest Service, National Park Service and Bureau of Land Management.4:45 – Introducing Nick Russell – core lord big mountain splitboarder.8:30 – Follow up to the butt vest discussion – Nick endorses the concept of the butt vest.15:15 – A little more about who Nick Russell is. In a 1976 case known as the “Cain and Abel Murders”, Jerry Allen Mark, a former Peace Corps volunteer and “hippie lawyer,” was convicted of murdering his brother Leslie Mark, Leslie's wife, and their two children in their Iowa farmhouse. The prosecution argued that Jerry killed his family over a property dispute, citing alleged jealousy after Leslie inherited the family farm after their father passed. Authorities claimed he was nearby on the night of the murders and had purchased bullets similar to those used in the crime shortly before it happened. But no physical evidence was found that pointed to Jerry and witness statements which were withheld by the prosecution during his initial trial suggested he was miles away at the time of the murders. Nevertheless, Jerry was convicted of first-degree murder and sentenced to four consecutive life sentences without parole. Some things should be laid to rest, like the idea that splitboarders are universally slow on the ups and slow to transition. Sure, the gear might be, generally, heavier, but the athletes, in our experience, are fit, fast, and able to ride terrain in eye-opening ways. Nick Russell fits this mold. A snowboarder living in California's Sierras, Russell and his easy-going vibe balance his moxy in big-mountain terrain. In this episode of The High Route Podcast, Russell provides some basics for non-snowboarders, such as the merits of soft boots over hard boots. He also details his immersive snowboard-alpinism (shralpinism??) experiences this season on India's Papsura and Mount St. Elias. Along with Jerry Mark, Blake Gordon, and Russell, this was the second group (first snowboarders) to ride/ski Papsura. The 6,461m mountain was first skied in 2017 by Hilaree Nelson, Jim Morrison, and Chris Figenshau. After listening to Russell, we are not afraid to make this claim: Maybe it's time to learn snowboarding. It's just another way to find happiness in the backcountry. We're psyched to have Russell as our guest. If you are new to The High Route, we are a reader and listener-supported enterprise focusing on human-powered turn making. Our mission is simple, but it takes real deal calorie burning to piece it all together. We are also excited to announce Issue 1.0 of The High Route magazine is in the works. Fancy paper. Good reads. High-octane photos. And some fine mountain ranges. And turns. You can learn more about our subscription options here. The theme music for The High Route Podcast comes from Storms in the Hill Country and the album The Self Transforming (Thank you, Jens Langsjoen). You can find a link to the album here—there are so many good songs on this album. And if you think you've spotted a UFO in the past or visited the 7th dimension, "Beautiful Alien" is a good tune to start with. Thanks for listening,The High Route Team
Today we are being joined by a special guest, Scott Cawelti who wrote a book titled "Brother's Blood: A Heartland Cain and Abel". Scott grew up knowing the man (Jerry Mark) who was ultimately convicted of murdering his brother and entire family back in the 1970s. In this episode, we dive deep into why this happened in the first place and discuss what questions still remain in this bizarre and haunting case out of Iowa. -- Connect with us! Week 15 broken down by Ed, Jerry & Mark!
Jerry Mark was a Peace Corps volunteer, lawyer, 4-H leader, vice-president of his Cedar Falls High School senior class and certainly a most likely-to-succeed young man when he graduated in 1960. In 1976 he was convicted of 4 execution-style murders of his own family. How could he have done such a thing and why? Author Scott Cawelti knew Jerry Mark from high school and when on to interview him in prison, attending the trial and discovering a mind consumed with anger, revenge, jealousy and greed. Brother's Blood chronicles the killer's cross-country motorcycle ride, the landmark investigation and arrest, the circumstantial case at trial and the appeals that continued for 30 years.
