Great strategy starts with a question—and a story worth believing in.A good strategy isn't just built—it's told. For Martin Reeves, chairman of the BCG Henderson Institute and author of The Imagination Machine and Like: The Button That Changed the World, strategy and imagination are both deeply communicative processes, rooted in storytelling, curiosity, and the courage to reframe assumptions.“A strategy is really just a special kind of story,” Reeves explains. “It begins with the present and aspires to a different future—it's fiction made actionable.” To bring that fiction to life, leaders must involve their teams in a co-creative journey and use thoughtful questions to shape not just ideas, but belief and action. In this episode of Think Fast, Talk Smart, Reeves joins Matt Abrahams to explore how communication fuels strategic thinking, innovation, and organizational reinvention. He outlines his six-step framework for imagination—from embracing anomalies to codifying and continuing ideas—and underscores the role of reframing, deep listening, and even levity in solving complex problems. Together, they unpack how a single “like” button changed our digital behaviors—and what it teaches us about influence and attention today.Episode Reference Links:Martin Reeves Martin's Books: Like / The Imagination Machine Ep.71 Strategy Success: How to Communicate Your Gameplan Connect:Premium Signup >>>> Think Fast Talk Smart PremiumEmail Questions & Feedback >>> hello@fastersmarter.ioEpisode Transcripts >>> Think Fast Talk Smart WebsiteNewsletter Signup + English Language Learning >>> FasterSmarter.ioThink Fast Talk Smart >>> LinkedIn, Instagram, YouTubeMatt Abrahams >>> LinkedInChapters:(00:00) - Introduction (02:19) - Using Story in Strategy (05:00) - Questions as a Communication Technology (06:15) - The Six Steps to Harnessing Imagination (10:36) - The “7 Cs” of Imagination and Communication (12:08) - Reframing as a Creative Tool (14:11) - The Like Button: Origin and Evolution (16:14) - Brain Chemistry Behind Digital Liking (18:12) - The Final Three Questions (22:59) - Conclusion *****This episode is sponsored by Stanford. I'm sharing hard-learned lessons on why most people aren't cut out for entrepreneurship, common mistakes new business owners make, and what truly matters when starting out. Ready to stop talking and start doing? This episode's for you. Key Talking Points of the Episode 00:00 Introduction 01:29 The harsh truth: 95% of people aren't built to start a business—and why that's okay. 03:28 Why your niche, product, and real results matter more than branding 07:28 Proving your concept and providing services that will make money 09:30 Making your business repeatable without trading time for money 12:13 Simple scales, fancy fails: Why overcomplicating your business is a recipe for disaster 14:02 Focusing on sales and marketing 17:41 Hiring talent from networking instead of job boards 22:12 Learning to delegate to scale your business the right way 23:14 Systemizing your business through SOPs and other tools 31:36 The importance of communication within your team Quotables “Ideas are pointless. Everyone has them. What matters is who takes action and gets paid for them.” “Simple scales. Fancy fails. The more complex you make it, the worse your product probably is.” “If you can't sell it more than once, it's not a business. Short Description Dr. Mike Woo-Ming shares his six-step GG6 system for goal setting, designed to help physicians overcome burnout and take control of their careers and lives. Learn how to set impactful goals, create actionable plans, and reassess to stay on track. Show Summary In this episode of BootstrapMD, Dr. Mike Woo-Ming revisits his GG6 system—a framework he designed to help physician entrepreneurs set and achieve meaningful goals. He breaks down the six steps, emphasizing the importance of specificity, deadlines, actionable systems, and periodic reassessment. By applying this method, listeners can regain control of their time, reduce burnout, and take steps toward building their dream careers and lives. 3 Actionable Takeaways [1] Prioritize Your Goals with Impact in MindStart by listing 10–20 goals across different areas of your life (career, finances, relationships, personal growth). Then, narrow it down to the top 3 that will have the most profound impact on your happiness, financial security, or career fulfillment. [2] Make Your Goals SMARTTransform general aspirations into Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Relevant, and Time-bound goals. For example, instead of saying "I want to make more money," set a goal like "Generate $10,000/month from my consulting business by December 31, 2025." [3] Establish a System and Stick to ItCreate a structured system to break your goals into smaller actionable steps. Allocate specific time each week to work on these steps and be disciplined about protecting that time from distractions. Regularly reassess your progress and be willing to pivot if necessary.
