When disaster strikes, situational awareness and timely information save lives and property. That's why Watch Duty was the most downloaded iOS app during three recent wildfire events. Nick Russell, Vice President of Operations, joined the podcast to discuss how this nonprofit receives and transmits information to support local responders and utilities before, during and after a disaster strikes. Procurement, validation, and accurate communication takes a large team of people, but with timely information comes the potential to improve readiness and response to wildfires.

With a focus on simplicity, minimalism and human-powered adventure, Nick Russell embodies what it is to be a free-spirited, big line splitboarder while making a living at it. Russell has eschewed guidebooks for true adventure, hunting for big lines and pow based more on a feeling than a calculation. This organic approach to becoming an expert in the backcountry takes years and more than a couple sandbag missions, but in the process creates a deeper connection with the land and with his comrades. Russell's most recent mission, captured in the Patagonia Films feature Papsura – Peak of Evil, along with his partner Jerry Mark and filmers Morgan Shields and Blake Gordon, claimed a first splitboard descent on an iconic line in the Indian Himalaya, a month-long mission that exceeded all expectations – a rare occurrence PowBot refers to as “The Jerry Effect”, related to the late Jerry Garcia. The boys also chat about the state of public lands in the midst of an onslaught against government agencies, with Russell encouraging listeners to call (202) 224 3121 and tell your local elected officials what you think about the drastic cuts against the Forest Service, National Park Service and Bureau of Land Management.4:45 – Introducing Nick Russell – core lord big mountain splitboarder.8:30 – Follow up to the butt vest discussion – Nick endorses the concept of the butt vest.15:15 – A little more about who Nick Russell is. Nick Russell has been exploring the world by snowboard for more than a decade now. What started as a career competing, has transitioned to being strictly human powered exploration to some of the worlds highest peaks. Nick's drive comes from being truly passionate about riding his snowboard, and loves travel and exploration just as much as a day in Truckee riding with friends. Sam and Adrian sit down with Nick to talk about his path to riding professionally:- The three talk about Nick's career trajectory, from growing up in a skiing family, through competing on his snowboard, and eventually following the footsteps of those before him into the world of human powered exploration. - Mentors have played a big role in many professional's lives, and the mentorship of Jeremy Jones, Jim Zellers, Hilaree Nelson, Jim Morrison and others has shaped Nick's path. - Nick's recent expedition to Papsura, completing the first snowboard descent of the iconic peak, was a tribute line to the Hilaree Nelson, and a proud accomplishment. You can learn more about Nick and his career on his Instagram, @nick_russelll and check out his new film 'Papsura: Peak of Evil' on Youtube here.Follow our podcast on Instagram @duffelshufflepodcast where you can learn more about us and our guests. Some things should be laid to rest, like the idea that splitboarders are universally slow on the ups and slow to transition. Sure, the gear might be, generally, heavier, but the athletes, in our experience, are fit, fast, and able to ride terrain in eye-opening ways. Nick Russell fits this mold. A snowboarder living in California's Sierras, Russell and his easy-going vibe balance his moxy in big-mountain terrain. In this episode of The High Route Podcast, Russell provides some basics for non-snowboarders, such as the merits of soft boots over hard boots. He also details his immersive snowboard-alpinism (shralpinism??) experiences this season on India's Papsura and Mount St. Elias. Along with Jerry Mark, Blake Gordon, and Russell, this was the second group (first snowboarders) to ride/ski Papsura. The 6,461m mountain was first skied in 2017 by Hilaree Nelson, Jim Morrison, and Chris Figenshau. After listening to Russell, we are not afraid to make this claim: Maybe it's time to learn snowboarding. It's just another way to find happiness in the backcountry. We're psyched to have Russell as our guest. If you are new to The High Route, we are a reader and listener-supported enterprise focusing on human-powered turn making. Our mission is simple, but it takes real deal calorie burning to piece it all together. We are also excited to announce Issue 1.0 of The High Route magazine is in the works. Fancy paper. Good reads. High-octane photos. And some fine mountain ranges. And turns. You can find a link to the album here—there are so many good songs on this album. In this episode, we have a conversation with backcountry snowboarder Nick Russell. Like so many of today's top snowboarders, Nick cut his teeth riding freestyle out East. He grew up in Connecticut before making his way to Vermont's Stratton Mountain School. The longtime home to the US OPEN, Stratton has produced snowboarding legends like Ross Powers and Danny Davis. Once he realized he wasn't destined for freestyle greatness, Russell migrated West. He eventually discovered splitboarding and began venturing deeper and deeper into the backcountry. With sponsors like Red Bull and WNDR Alpine, Russell is breaking new ground as a backcountry snowboarder. He talks about his passion for expedition snowboarding and exploratory freeriding, including a recent trip to Nepal. He puts his tech hat on and explains the science behind WNDR's sustainable materials, and the role he plays in product development. Russell then reflects on the path that brought him to where he is today, and his lifelong love of snowboarding. This episode is brought to you in part by Taos Ski Valley. My guest today, Nick Russell, has one of the most interesting life stories I have ever heard. I think when you are done listening to this episode, you will agree. Nick comes from a cop family, his dad was a deputy sheriff, then became a Border Patrolman (his dad rode a horse to work every day), and when he retired from that he became a city cop in Ohio. He also had two uncles and an older brother who were LEOs.He joined the Army right after high school and served in Vietnam with the First Cavalry Division, got banged up a couple of times (three Purple Hearts), and when he was back stateside and was fit for duty, was a firearms instructor at the U.S. Military Academy at West Point. After the Army, he was a reserve cop in Ohio until dad talked him out of it and told him he should pursue his dream of being a writer. He was also a criminal investigator with the Arizona Attorney General’s office for a total of six years where he investigated everything from police-related shootings to crooked city officials. Nick also ran small-town newspapers on the Pacific Northwest coast and in Arizona. In 1999 Nick and his wife Terry became full-time RVers, spending the next 18+ years wandering around the country in a motorhome publishing the Gypsy Journal RV travel newspaper. Nick Russell is a proud indie-author of 45 books, including the Big Lake mystery series, the John Lee Quarrels series, the two-book Dog’s Run series, and the Tinder Street family saga. He was very fortunate that his first novel, Big Lake, made the New York Times bestseller list. You will never guess how the story came to him, and how long it took him to hit the "publish button." In October of 2016, Nick and his wife Terry bought a house on the central Florida coast midway between Daytona Breach and Cape Canaveral. They can watch the rockets launch from their yard.Trust me, this is a story you will not want to miss hearing!Visit Nick's blog that he publishes every day!Check out Nick's Amazon Author Page!Enjoy the Cops and Writers book series. Please visit the Cops and Writers website. If you have a question for the sarge, hit him up at his email.Come join the fun at the Cops and Writers Facebook groupSupport the show (https://patreon.com/copsandwriters)

Welcome to Season Two of the Recruitment Leadership podcast! In this season, we're talking all things finance for recruitment, with Nick Russell of Sonovate. As the Commercial Sales Manager of one of the UK's fastest growing FinTech companies, Nick provides a wealth of knowledge on the often tricky topic of finance and investment. A three-part how-to series, there's something for every recruitment in this series. This episode is geared at more substantial recruitment businesses who may be a little bit further along their development curve - typically more than 50 heads. If you're a director or owner who may have a business event in their sights such as an exit, an MBO or trade sale, for example, this episode will be essential listening for you. 01:54 - A lot of large recruitment businesses are wildly non-compliant and don't realise. A lot of the problems stem from the contractor workforce or temporary workforce - but not exclusively. It can be a big issue once you get involved in due diligence but also has an impact on financing. What problems have you (Nick) come across with larger businesses when you get involved in the financing discussion? 04:53 - One company I worked with last year assumed there were no problems with their compliance, as their household-name client has not raised any questions. I identified there was an issue with their terms that may have prevented them from getting paid if there was a dispute. Although embarrassing, they admitted their mistake to the client and put things right. A less scrupulous client could have been willing to take advantage of that situation - have you (Nick) had anything like that happen? 09:22 - From a finance perspective, what do it do you think, Nick, that different types of buyers look for when they acquire a recruitment business? 10:55 - What number is good for payment terms? 11:43 - What classes as a lot of credit notes, in percentage terms? 14:00 - To what extent do funding organisations like Sonovate actually make the assessment of how a management team perform and how financially astute they are? 17:45 - Taking the perm invoicing and finance scenario, you (Nick) said people will do anything between 60 and 90% - what are the factors that influence that? 22:28 - What's your advice to recruitment business owners about protecting themselves from fraud? 29:44 - As the possibility of a sale or investment becomes more real, business owners want to look at swapping their financing arrangements. What are the signs that they should do that do you think? 31:33 - You mentioned there about if the service is poor. There are some issues that are driven by the recruitment business which means that the financier can't give them a good service. What are they? 33:13 - How hard is it to swap financier? If you have any questions from the podcast or have any topics you would like to be covered, please email - alison@recruitmentleadership.co.uk You can also contact Nick Russell from Sonovate at - nrussell@sonovate.com Please like, share and leave a review if you enjoyed this episode. A three-part how-to series, there's something for every recruitment in this series. In particular, the focus is on how this might affect your financing arrangements if you are a recruitment, business owner or director. This episode will be of interest to businesses of all sizes, wherever you are on the developmental curve. Episode Agenda: 01:42 - Leaving aside the B word (Brexit), we are in an environment where it looks like there's going to be increased regulation. And of course, in 2020, we've got the IR35 changes due to be rolled out in the private sector. Now they have those had a major effect in the public sector. We can go into a bit more detail about that, but at a very high level, what effects do you predict and how might funding be affected for recruiters? 04:52 - Questions on Statement of Works - How does it work in principle? Who's responsible for delivering on that statement of works? How much do I need to know about what my contract is doing? Am I the person responsible for completing? So how do we think this will affect it will affect the financing of recruitment contracts? 08:53 - Is there going to be a trend of contractors being hired on day rates going forward as an indication that they are not under supervision, direction and control? 15:17 - In regards to GDPR, are there any insurance implications that you think business owners should be looking at if they haven't already done so, from a financing funding point of view? 19:32 - A number of businesses have enquired not about invoicing and finance for temporary and contract workers, but invoices for permanent workers. Is something that is becoming more widespread? Why would a recruitment business owner want to finance their permanent invoices? 24:02 - Are there any trends that Sonovate staff are seeing at the moment in delivering their service - such as credit control? 29:21 - An increasing number of companies, during the run-up to Brexit, have decided to look at incorporating overseas different countries for different markets. What is the impact if you are using funding from a business here in the UK? 33:43 - What are the key questions that a recruitment business owner should ask themselves or ask a potential candidate when choosing a financing partner? -- If you have any questions from the podcast or have any topics you would like to be covered, please email - alison@recruitmentleadership.co.uk You can also contact Nick Russell from Sonovate at - nrussell@sonovate.com Please like, share and leave a review if you enjoyed this episode. Why is this? 03:49 - Despite the huge number of startups and low barriers to entry in the industry, financing invoices are generally quite an attractive proposition for providers of finance. Those two things might seem slightly contradictory - why is it such an attractive commercial arrangement for financing organisations? 07:50 - For businesses who originally set up as a lifestyle business, they tend to typically start with permanent recruitment. For those keen to break into the "sexy" action - which is temporary and contract and all those sustainable, visible revenues - whats the key advice for those organisations? What options do they have? What might hold them back? 14:00 - Objectively, what are the pros and cons of using different finance sources such as equity providers, angel investors and friends/family? 22:55 - What is the onboarding process for a micro-business to partner with an organisation like Sonovate? 26:21 - What does the audit that finance companies execute involve? If you have any questions from the podcast or have any topics you would like to be covered, please email - alison@recruitmentleadership.co.uk You can also contact Nick Russell from Sonovate at - nrussell@sonovate.com Please like, share and leave a review if you enjoyed this episode. Rookies Claire McCluskey and Nick Russell recently sailed across the Atlantic. The idea was hatched over a few pints in the pub. The only thing standing between them and the adventure was the fact that neither of them had huge experience of offshore sailing! But that wasn't enough to stand in their way. The duo took on courses and dedicated three years to prepare for their voyage. Here they tell us all about their epic adventure.

Episode 9 of the podcast was recorded in February 2018. In this episode I welcome Nick Russell to talk about his experiences in the intersection of technology and real estate and what he’s up to now with his venture PropCoin. Nick and I go back around 5 years when we were, in theory, competition to each other. He was the co-founder of one tech startup, and I an early team member at mine. I must point out for clarity that Nick refers to me as a founder/starter of my former employer, the online marketplace appearhere.co.uk but technically I am not, although I gladly take home the title of Employee #1 after the sole founder, Ross. In recent years we’ve got back in touch and and it’s been a pleasure to sit and talk with Nick as he looks far and wide beyond his own business to dig deep into what’s going on laterally around his, or anyone else’s, business ideas and look for opportunity. It’s a long one this pod as we cover a whole host of issues from blockchain, to proptech, to traditional property, to urban planning, to the retail markets and home ownership, we even step into the mirky waters of ethics and freedom of speech briefly. If you missed any of his contact details the best place to get hold of him is via his twitter handle @bettercity. If you have any questions about the show, or even ideas for it please email us at podcast@thecentriclab.com and feel free to give us a follow on Twitter via @TheCentricLab.
"Our capacity to fail is essential to what we are." Costica Bradatan http://opinionator.blogs.nytimes.com/2013/12/15/in-praise-of-failure/ Startups fail. We hear it all the time. Failure is good. We hear that all the time too. But we rarely hear about the pain, the shame, and second guessing. And even worse, we rarely hear about what opportunities may lie for our own growth in something ending beyond the pivot and lessons learned. A startup failing is not proof that something is broken within you. In fact it’s an opening and opportunity to find something new within you and for you. Nick Russell was co-founder and CEO of UK based We are Pop-up. Nick joined Jerry on the very day he handed over the keys and closed up shop on his startup of 3+ years. In this discussion, Jerry and Nick talk about what he’s experiencing now, what he learned and wishes he had done differently, and a surprising path forward for him. It's a path that could be helpful for you in your own transitions.
