The kids haven’t even stepped out on the sidewalk draped in their ghoulish finery, and Aunt Mildred has yet to buy a fat turkey for the family feast. Nevertheless, here in the auto world, the time has come to start deliberating on the best cars and trucks of the year. Among the accolades in the automotive community, one of the most prestigious honors is the North American Car and Truck of the Year award. On this week’s special edition of Autoline After Hours, John McElroy welcomes three fellow jurors to join him in reviewing the nominees on the “short lists.” See which cars, trucks and utility vehicles have risen above the rest as John is joined by Michelle Krebs from Edmunds.com, Chris Paukert of Autoblog.com and freelance auto journalist Jim McCraw.
This week the conversation gets turbocharged as we welcome John Norton from BorgWarner into the AAH studio. He heads up the company's racing efforts and we'll be asking him what technologies they are developing and if we might see these innovations on everyday cars and trucks. Plus, as always, we'll be getting into the biggest news of the week including who we think will win the North American Car and Truck of the Year Award. We'll also talk about all-new trucks just revealed by GM and delve into the news about Chrysler's delinquent employees getting reinstated. Joining John McElroy to participate in the discussion is Peter De Lorenzo, the Autoextremist, as well as auto journo Jim McCraw.
This week we're talking about one of the best ways to have fun wasting fuel as well as all the boring ways to save as much gas as we can in a crisis. First we'll be getting into some drag racing talk with long-time Milan Dragway Track Announcer Michael G. Nastos. We'll talk about the emerging popularity of vintage drag racing, something called "Project 1320" and why the IRS is investigating the NHRA. In the meantime, a survey says most Americans want to get 62 miles per gallon. So why aren't hybrids that popular? While we're at it: why haven't CAFE regulations ever reduced our dependence on foreign oil? John McElroy is also joined in studio by the Autoextremist, Peter De Lorenzo, and auto journalist Jim McCraw.
Does your IRA stink? Are they going to tax your pension? Maybe it's time to invest in classic cars ... or maybe not. That's one of the questions we'll put to our special guest this week. Ken Lingenfelter is the owner of Lingenfelter Performance Engineering as well as the Lingenfelter Collection, an assortment of Corvettes, muscle cars and exotics. Of course, you can be sure we'll get into the latest news including Bob King's accusation that Alan Mulally's raise is "morally wrong" and what the near future holds for automakers in crisis-stricken Japan. John McElroy is also joined in studio by the Autoextremist, Peter De Lorenzo, as well as auto journalist Jim McCraw.
The Result of Care: Part OneNo matter the vocation it's a struggle to achieve quality or to be the best. Well, imagine trying to define it. Some write complex tomes containing various recipes which is fine for a Debate Team but hardly applicable to everyday life. Others like philosopher Robert Pirsig take a sleeker, more modern day approach. He believes the best or highest quality can be defined simply as producing whatever by "the result of care."So if philosophers, lit experts and big thinkers battle over meanings, how does one come up with a standard that means "the best?" Well if you're the jurors of the North American Car and Truck of the Year Awards (NACTOY) you have a criteria you work from. Sure there are still disagreements, arguments and fights over who is "more right" but that's the beauty of the award: subjectivity to the max.And on this week's Autoline John McElroy and his panel discuss those fantastic sparks inside, outside and around the vehicle that made them go WOW! Joining John to discuss the finalists for Car of the Year are fellow jurors Jim McCraw from NewCarTestDrive.com and Jeff Gilbert of WWJ Newsradio 950 -- CBS Detroit.
