Science depends essentially on inductive inferences – inferences that go beyond the evidence on which they are based. But inductive inferences have historically been modeled on deductive inferences, which are valid if and only if they satisfy a valid argument form. In The Large-Scale Structure of Inductive Inference (BSPS Open/University of Calgary Press), John Norton expands his defense of what he calls the material theory of induction: what makes an induction good is not its conforming to a universal rule, like deduction, but instead by its being warranted by true background facts in a particular domain. Norton – Distinguished Professor of philosophy of science at the University of Pittsburgh -- argues that while these facts are themselves in turn supported by inductive inferences, the resulting network of inductive support does not suffer from vicious circularity, is not a form of coherentist epistemology, and dissolves the infamous problem of induction articulated most clearly by Hume. A new satire from award winning writer Anita Sullivan, set at a fictional COP conference, with a talking Mosquito. Developed with leading climate scientists.Peter is a hapless politician representing the UK at COP in Paris. Hoping to retire soon – he didn't really want this assignment, but now he's caught like a rabbit in the headlights between the fiercely intelligent business analyst who has taken the place of his usual PA, and the changing landscapes of contemporary politics and climate crisis speak. Will he talk absolute rubbish? Will he keep his job? Will he sell our children's future to the highest bidder? What is African Horse Flu? And can anyone else hear that whining voice? The Mosquito was developed through OKRE Experimental Stories supported by Wellcome, in consultation with Professor Andy Morse (Professor of Climate Impacts at the University of Liverpool) and Dr Omnia El Omrani (Climate and Health Policy Fellow at Imperial College London).Interviews are used with permission from:https://hub.connectingclimateminds.org/lived-experiencesCASTPeter- Robert BathurstThe Mosquito- Laila AljFarah - Laila AljAddy - Audrey BrissonFaith - Ruth EverettMiles - Laurence SaundersThe Volunteer and other roles - Nuhazet Diaz CanoProduction Co-ordinators - Eleri McAuliffe and Noa DowlingSound Design - Catherine RobinsonDirected by John Norton.A BBC Audio Wales production for Radio 4.

In the spirit of the season, we're pleased to present a Victorian era Christmas story, written by the celebrated 19th century author from Guilford, Reverend William Henry Harrison Murray. Better known as “Adirondack” Murray, because his books almost single-handedly transformed that region from a New York wilderness to one of the country's most popular tourist destinations, Murray was one of the first mass audience authors to promote recreational camping as a leisure time activity, and coined the term “vacation.” He is recognized as a father of the American Outdoor movement. His belief that the north woods were health giving and spiritually beneficial, and that the rustic nobility of Adirondack woodsmen was produced by their wilderness life, drew Americans by the millions to the woods, and to his books and tales. In “John Norton's Vagabond,” fro Murray's 1897 book “Holiday Tales: Christmas in the Adirondacks,” we meet one of those noble rustic woodsmen, the trapper John Norton, who decides, in counsel with his dogs Rover and Sport, to hold a Christmas dinner, to which he will invite even vagabonds. It might be helpful to know that in John Norton's trapper's world the word vagabond meant more than just a person who wanders about–it meant a person who stole other men's traps and poached their furs, in short, the worst of the worst. So with that as background, get a cup of cocoa, grab an easy chair, and have a listen to Rev, William Henry Harrison “Adirondack Murray's” Christmas story, “John Norton's Vagabond. Special thanks to the Free Music Archive, Creative Commons, and these amazingly talented artists for the use of this wonderful music: Borrtex, “Christmas Memory,” “Christmas Tree,” Poddington Bear, “Angels We Have Heard on High” Rue Royale, “Snow on Snow”

Gunnison-Crested Butte Tourism Association Executive Director John Norton grew up in Pittsburgh, PA, where he played the "typical" ball sports like football. At Dartmouth College, he met his future wife, an accomplished and avid skier, so he knew he better learn how if he wanted to stick with her. Today, it's one of his favorite things to do, but he's also a jack-of-all-trades, enjoying kayaking, fishing, mountain biking and everything else we enjoy in Crested Butte. After college, John began climbing the corporate ladder in the marketing department at Proctor and Gamble. He may have stayed on that track if an old college friend hadn't offered him a job at Crested Butte Mountain Resort (CBMR), in the marketing department there. The early 90's were an exciting time at CBMR, with new lifts like the North Face and High lift, plus innovative efforts to attract new business, like guaranteeing airline seats and "free ski". Later, John spent roughly ten years at the Aspen Skiing Company before being called back to Crested Butte and helping secure the sale of CBMR from the Nortons and Calloways to the Muellers (Triple Peaks). After the Mueller sale, John eventually became the executive director at the local tourism association (TA). The TA has since grown to encompass local entrepreneurial efforts as well. In this episode, we talk about all of this and more, so enjoy this one- Crested Butte Real Estate Minute: Like many other places, Crested Butte and Gunnison are experiencing closures due to the Corona virus. Tom was born in the seaside town of Ipswich, Massachusetts, once home to the authors John Updike (who was a patient of his Dad, which enabled Tom to build a nice collection of signed first edition novels), Adele Robertson, John Norton, and the poet Anne Bradstreet. Perhaps it was the history of the town, but from an early age Tom developed a love of writing and left Ipswich to earn his degree in English Literature at the University of Wisconsin-Madison. There he focused on creative writing and was selected by the English Department to participate in an international study program at the University of Oxford. After college Tom lived in New York City and Boston and published non-fiction in such publications as THE NEW YORK TIMES and the HARVARD BUSINESS REVIEW. He embarked on a career in technology culminating in his starting, building, and selling a technology strategy consulting firm In addition to writing fiction, Tom is the board director of, and an advisor to, technology companies in the cyber security, media, data analytics, cloud computing, mobile, social intelligence, and information technology businesses.
