Shoot us a Text.Episode #1051: We're diving into the Senate's move to block California's gas car ban, Google's new video AI that adds audio, and which brands — including top automakers — gained or lost consumer trust in the 2025 Axios/Harris reputation rankings.Show Notes with links:In a dramatic legislative twist, the U.S. Senate voted to block California's plan to ban gas-powered vehicles by 2035, undercutting a key Biden-era environmental policy and dealing a blow to a major state-led push for zero-emission standards. The Senate vote was 51-44 to rescind the EPA waiver allowing California stricter emissions rules.11 states following California's policy would be impacted, including NY and WA.Auto dealers and manufacturers lobbied hard for the repeal, citing feasibility concerns. The move defies Senate precedent and a legal ruling from the parliamentarian.“You can be against the ACC II EV mandates (we were) and believe that transportation is trending toward a range of electrified products like battery electric vehicles, hybrids and plug-in hybrids (it is). That's what balance looks like. And balance is not only good for consumers, but essential for the U.S. auto industry to remain healthy and globally competitive,” said John Bozzella, CEO of the Alliance for Automotive Innovation.Axios and The Harris Poll just dropped their annual brand reputation rankings, and the message from consumers is loud and clear: keep prices fair, quality high, and don't exploit inflation. Brands that did well stuck to those basics.Nearly half of all corporate reputations declined this year, driven by frustration over high prices and perceived drops in quality.77% of Americans say companies are charging more for lower quality; 63% have stopped buying from a brand due to high costs, and 54% over declining product standards. The biggest winners? Seoul, Korea episode Listener Story Spotlight A friend and a listener named Lois recently went to Hawaii. She told me she spent much time getting travel insurance for herself and her partner. She had to pay more than she expected as her partner was having a birthday between the day she bought the service and the day of the trip. But she said it was well worth it for her peace of mind. The FAQ for today is: Where to find the best travel insurance for a long trip abroad. 1. Start with a neutral comparison engine; you can see this in the show notes. Why use it first? Where to click Smart filters to enable It lets you price 30-day single-trip plans from dozens of underwriters side-by-side, then click through to the policy certificate in one step. Squaremouth (toggle "Comprehensive" or "Medical-only" to see apples-to-apples pricing). Squaremouth Travel Insurance Medical ≥ $100k, Evac≥ $250k, "Cancel for Any Reason" if you want maximum flexibility. Gives you consumer-written claim reviews plus AM Best financial ratings in the results grid. InsureMyTrip (same data feed as Squaremouth but different sort logic). Add "PIf relevant, existing condition waiver" if rek "Adventure sports" if you'll hike or dive. Pulls quotes from some insurers that don't feed aggregators (e.g., Allianz's higher-tier plans) and lists A.M. Best scores. TravelInsurance.com Use the "24/7 assistance" toggle to see which plans outsource helplines. Skeptical check: All three make a commission, and none of them has every carrier. Run your trip through at least two engines and see if the so-called "cheapest" plan is available. 2. Cross-reference with an independent ranking list U.S. News "Best Travel Insurance Companies 2025" ranks plans by coverage and claim-paying history—not advertising spend. It's a fast way to see which names (Travelex, Allianz, Tin Leg, etc.) consistently show up in the top tier. U.S. News 3. See what other solo women say SoloTravelerWorld.com keeps an updated "Best Travel Insurance for Solo Travelers" guide that spells out what to look for if you're traveling alone—single-supplement benefits, harassment coverage, and 24-hour crisis lines. Solo Traveler AbsolutelyLucy.com lays out five red flags that matter disproportionately to women (e.g., personal-assault medical limits, emergency contraception exclusions). Absolutely Lucy Read these before you fall for glossy Instagram ads that treat "female-friendly" as a slogan. 4. Kick the tires on the insurer's site If a plan looks good in a marketplace, open the policy certificate directly on the carrier's website (World Nomads, SafetyWing, Allianz, IMG, etc.). World Nomads publishes unfiltered claim reviews, which help sniff out chronic payout delays. World Nomads 5. Verify what your government will—or won't—do The U.S. State Department's Insurance Coverage Overseas page makes it crystal-clear that Uncle Sam does not pay your hospital bill or med-evac. It also links to the embassy medical resources for every country, which tells you how far the nearest trauma center is from your trekking trail. Travel.gov 6. Double-check your credit-card benefits Cards in your wallet may cover trip delays, baggage loss, or secondary car rental insurance. The Points Guy keeps a running tally of cards whose built-in coverage is worth something and where the gaps are (e.g., no medical evacuation). How to use these resources efficiently Quote your exact dates (don't round your trip to a calendar month; excess days add cost). Filter for medical & Evac first; those two benefits can bankrupt you. Ignore marketing buzzwords like "explorer" or "adventure" until you've opened the PDF certificate and searched for the activity you plan to do. Run your final four shortlist past recent claim reviews (Squaremouth, Trustpilot, Reddit r/solotravel) to see if the carrier ghosted people during COVID or the Israel–Gaza cancellations. You can purchase directly from the insurer once you've chosen, which avoids aggregator change fees if you need to modify dates. Stay curious, question every "Top 10" list's methodology, and you'll land the coverage that fits your risk profile—nothing more, nothing less. 60-second confidence challenge 3 things: neighborhood selection, daylight itineraries, scam avoidance Select walkable neighborhoods with public transportation nearby if you don't drive. Read reviews on the AirBNB website before you select. When booking a flight or train, be sure it arrives at daylight, which can differ in winter months. If it comes after dark, it will be more challenging. To avoid scams, be cautious when choosing passwords, logging out of websites, and making online purchases. These are very typical scams. If you are suspicious, you may be right to avoid that vendor and choose another. Don't look like a target, either. If you like today's Confidence Challenge, Chapter 1 of my book dives deeper—https://www.5stepstosolotravel.com See Book A for addressing all of these items. Find it on the website or Amazon. It's a series. Today's destination is: South Korea I visited South Korea last month. I landed at Seoul's Inchon Airport. My Korean pronunciation is not good, so please understand that as I describe my trip. I was excited to see the city through the eyes of my friend Chris. We were whisked away to a hotpot dinner, then taken to the French neighborhood in Seoul, where we rested for the night. The next morning, we drove south to visit a town about 2 hours away and stayed in Wolbong-ro (Road), in Seobuk-gu, near SeongJeong. For example, the Seoul Noryyanglin Fisheries Wholesale Market is five stories tall and open to the public. It's worth seeing if you like seafood, and you can roam the aisles looking for your favorite fish delicacies. I visited the Vovo Bidet company and met with the director and some of his team. Have you seen the #1 Bidet firm in Korea? They have retail and wholesale offices in the Los Angeles area, too. I liked the tour of the offices here in Seoul. They even have a Bidet to go. Think about that for a minute. That was in Daebang-dong or Seocho4-dong. I visited retail stores such as Zara, one of my favorites for fashion. I had Chinese, Japanese, and Fusion foods. I took subways, busses, taxis, and Ubers plus trains. I went to Gwannghumun Square, the purple Station #9. I went to the shopping mall called The Hyundai. and found stores like Zanmang Loopy, the Hyundai Present, and a great coffee and tea shop. I learned about Hanguel, the Korean alphabet, and saw the statue of Sejong the Great. There was also another statue of Admiral YiSun Sin. The Bukchon Honok Village is a quiet residential area. Jogyasa Temple is where you will see Buddism. Hongdae is the neighborhood for independent artists. Yonsei University was a place I wanted to visit next time, as I was in the neighborhood and liked it a lot. Gangnam style, well, maybe next time. I tried new foods, such as mung bean pancakes and hotleok desserts. We had a wonderful dinner at Sushi-ya Shabu-ya, about an hour from Seoul, near Korea Nazarene University in Cheonan-si-Buldang1-dong. Recommended: Relax in a tea house. Smart Move and Slip up pairings In Korea, we were departing from the airport without enough money on our transit cards, so we could not enter the building. Instead, we had to see the office at the kiosk and pay for the train. It was not much, but it did take a few minutes. We arrived well ahead of the recommended 3 hours, so that was not an issue. 60 second confidence challenge Do you or don't you tip? Not in South Korea. But it's always smart to ask. Be confident when you know what the expectations are. Resources Roundup If you are looking for more solo female travel resources, you can find several tips and ways to navigate the pitfalls, such as paying the difference on the transit card when you go long distances or knowing when to tip. When you get lost, don't get upset. Get found. You will be better off if you cool down instead of heating your brain incorrectly. Chill, and you'll be found sooner. Dr. Travelbest's tip #760.

In today's episode, I sit down with author Justin Whitmel Earley. Justin's career began as a missionary in China until becoming a business lawyer. Along the way, he faced a tough mental health crisis that changed everything for him. What came out of that season? A totally different way of living. One that was shaped by intentional habits and vulnerability. We talk about the two spiritual habits he leans on the most, how being vulnerable can strengthen our friendships, and what it looks like to build deep connections with our kids (even in the midst of chaos). He also shares about his book The Big Mess - a reminder that the messiness of life, especially with our kids, can actually be a gift. Robots competing in a half marathon? It might sound like science fiction, but it recently happened in Beijing. Humanoid robots are moving out of the lab and into the real world — and the race to bring them to market is heating up. Skip Montreux and Dez Morgan explore the fast-growing industry of humanoid robots. From Tesla's Optimus project to China's state-backed 'robot schools', they discuss the companies pushing development forward, the technology powering these machines, and the economic forces shaping this emerging market. Their conversation is a great learning resource if you want to build your English listening comprehension skills and expand your business vocabulary. Key points of their discussion include: Why humanoid robots ran in a recent half marathon in China. What Tesla, Boston Dynamics, and Unitree Robotics are doing in the robotics space. The strategic investments by companies like Hyundai, Toyota, and Softbank in robotics. How China has built a cost-effective supply chain for robot development. Do you like what you hear? On this week's episode of The MacRumors Show, we discuss the long-awaited roll out of Apple CarPlay Ultra and Samsung's all-new S25 Edge, which is positioned to rival the iPhone 17 Air later this year. Apple this week announced CarPlay Ultra, its next-generation CarPlay experience. CarPlay Ultra fully extends across all of the vehicle's display, including the instrument cluster. It provides access to real-time vehicle data, supports iPhonewidgets, theme options, instrument cluster display customizations, and introduces integrations for vehicle functions. CarPlay Ultra is available first in new Aston Martin models in North America. Existing Aston Martin vehicles will also support CarPlay Ultra through forthcoming software updates. Looking ahead, Apple says it has secured commitments from Hyundai, Kia, and Genesis to bring CarPlay Ultra to their vehicles in the coming year. Other automakers are expected to follow. In other news, Samsung this week announced the Galaxy S25 Edge — a device clearly designed to undercut the iPhone 17 Air's expected appeal, with both smartphones aiming to be the thinnest in their respective ecosystems. The Galaxy S25 Edge sports a 6.7-inch AMOLED display, a titanium frame, and a remarkably slim 5.8mm profile, weighing in at just 163 grams. It features a dual-lens camera system, including a 200MP wide-angle sensor and a 12MP ultra-wide camera, supported by Qualcomm's Snapdragon 8 Elite chip. Samsung is also pushing its AI credentials with features like Drawing Assist and Audio Eraser. In contrast, the iPhone 17 Air is rumored to be even thinner at just 5.5mm, making it Apple's slimmest iPhone ever. It is expected to feature a 6.6-inch OLED display with ProMotion. Apple is said to be removing the ultra-wide camera entirely and opting for a single 48MP wide camera, removing the SIM card tray, and the secondary stereo speaker to save internal space. Other expected specifications include a 24MP front-facing camera, 12GB of RAM, and the A19 chip. While the iPhone 17 Air may win the title of thinnest flagship, it could come with a major compromise: battery life. According to internal testing leaks, only 60–70% of users are expected to get through a full day on a single charge — a notable drop from the 80–90% seen with other recent iPhone models. Apple is reportedly using a higher-density battery and its custom C1 modem to squeeze as much efficiency as possible into the super-thin design. To address this, Apple is reportedly developing a new USB-C battery case, designed to extend the iPhone 17 Air's runtime. The accessory could launch alongside the device to help mitigate negative perceptions around longevity
Some people might call Jonathon Keats an artist, but he calls himself an experimental philosopher. His body of work explores the way that human life intersects with political and economic systems. His first major work, in the year 2000, involved sitting in a chair thinking for hours, and then selling his thoughts to patrons at prices calculated on the basis of their income. He once copyrighted his own mind as a sculpture. He created a ringtone based on John Cage's famous piece, 4'33”, which is four minutes and thirty-three seconds of complete silence. He built a pinhole camera that takes photographic exposures lasting 100 years. In Berkeley, California, he built a temple for the worship of science. Recently, he has been involved in efforts to formalize rights of nature. Jonathon challenges us to look carefully at the assumptions built into our markets, our democracies and our technologies, and constantly seems to do it in ways that seem abstract at the time, but end up prefiguring political or cultural issues years or decades before they erupt. He's a wonderful guide to this territory, and to the big questions it involves. In this conversation Matt and Jonathon discuss the philosophy of timekeeping. They consider the connectedness and the alienation of being on universal atomic time, the promise of alternative systems such as the river clock, and how different notions of timekeeping influence our understanding of democracy and nature.Jonathon Keats is an experimental philosopher, artist and writer. He is currently a fellow at the Berggruen Institute, a research fellow at the Long Now Foundation, a research associate at the University of Arizona, principal philosopher at Earth Law Center and an artist-in-residence at Hyundai, the SETI Institute and Flux Projects. His most recent book is “You Belong to the Universe: Buckminster Fuller and the Future” (Oxford University Press).Mentioned:Alaska RiverTimeIf you have feedback or ideas for future episodes, email us at info@radicalxchange.org.Host: Matt PrewittGuest: Jonathan KeatsProducer: Jack Henderson Connect with RadicalxChange Foundation:WebsiteXBlueSkyYouTubeLinkedInDiscord

Shoot us a Text.Episode #1038: Today we're talking about the expected surge in auto dealership M&A activity, Hyundai's latest software update that simplifies EV charging across major networks, and Tanger's decision to launch its back-to-school campaign early in response to ongoing tariff concerns.Show Notes with links:Though Q1 saw a dip in dealership buy-sell activity, The Presidio Group sees the rest of 2025 heating up. With election season uncertainty in the rearview, dealers may be ready to get back to the negotiating table.Q1 had 82 transactions involving 106 dealerships, down from 90 deals and 175 stores last year.Election year uncertainty slowed activity, but momentum is now rebounding with Presidio saying the pipeline is “robust” and expecting strong summer/fall dealmaking.Presidio President George Karolis said that tariffs are adding complexity, especially around brand valuation and sourcing strategies. However, many dealers are already looking past tariffs, and there are more buyers than sellers in the current market.“Certainly, [tariffs have] come up. If anything, maybe we're buying a little bit of time just to see what happens over the next 90 days before we finalize some transactions,” said Sonic Automotive President Jeff Dyke.Hyundai EV drivers just got a serious charging upgrade. Shoot us a Text.Episode #1033: Today we're talking Hyundai and Kia's red-hot April sales streak, Ford's surprise retreat from a major software project, and why most consumers still aren't sold on AI or social shopping tools.Show Notes with links:U.S. shoppers are racing to dealerships to beat rising prices from new import tariffs, driving Hyundai and Kia to record April sales as both brands notch their seventh straight month of year-over-year gains.Hyundai U.S. sales jumped 19% in April, while Kia sales rose 14%.EVs and hybrids continue to shine: Hyundai up 25%, Kia up 21%.Industrywide sales were projected to rise as much as 15% in April, though momentum cooled as the month progressed.U.S. new-vehicle inventory dropped to 2.57M units (61-day supply) in mid-April, down from 2.69M (70 days) at the start of April and 2.8M (81 days) a year ago, per Cox Automotive.“Inventory levels have declined substantially over recent weeks, likely pushing vehicle prices higher. The outlook for new-auto sales from here is more troubling,” said Cox Automotive's Charles Chesbrough.Ford has canceled its highly anticipated FNV4 electrical architecture project, once billed as key to competing with EV pioneers like Tesla. The move underscores the uphill battle legacy automakers face in modernizing vehicle software.FNV4 aimed to unify software across gas and electric models, cutting costs and boosting update speed. The project was scrapped due to cost overruns and delays, after contributing to nearly $10B in software and EV losses over two years.CEO Jim Farley admitted Ford's current system relies on code from 150 suppliers—creating major barriers to quality and speed.Ford is shifting focus to a California-based skunkworks team developing affordable EVs and advanced software.“The only strategic advantage any company can have is speed,” said Caresoft Global's Terry Woychowski.New data shows a growing divide in how U.S. consumers view tech-driven shopping. KPMG's summer 2025 survey suggests widespread hesitation toward AI and social commerce—while Capgemini sees signs of rising adoption, especially among Gen Z.63% of consumers haven't used AI shopping tools and don't plan to, per KPMG; 56% say the same for social shopping.Shoppers say they prefer doing their own research and aren't swayed by online ads—especially when privacy and data usage are involved. In contrast, Capgemini reports nearly 60% of consumers now use generative AI in place of traditional search, and a third shop directly via social media.Gen Z bucks the trend: over half have made purchases via social platforms, and TikTok shoppers spent an average of $708 on the app last year.“The visual nature of fashion makes it a perfect fit for platforms like Instagram and TikTok,” said KPMG's Sam Ganga, urginJoin Paul J Daly and Kyle Mountsier every morning for the Automotive State of the Union podcast as they connect the dots across car dealerships, retail trends, emerging tech like AI, and cultural shifts—bringing clarity, speed, and people-first insight to automotive leaders navigating a rapidly changing industry.Get the Daily Push Back email at https://www.asotu.com/ JOIN the conversation on LinkedIn at: https://www.linkedin.com/company/asotu/
So many men are bored! In their work and in their walk with Jesus. But it doesn't have to stay that way. In this episode, I have an incredible conversation with Peter Ostapko, who shares his journey of creating the Kinsmen Journal - an annual magazine that challenges men to lead lives of transformative faith, redemptive fatherhood, and fostering a sense of brotherhood among men. We discuss what it means to be a man, why men today are bored and how to raise sons that become men. Peter emphasizes the need for men (and boys) to embrace risk, adventure, and vulnerability and how those things actually bring us closer to Jesus. Tune in for insights on redefining masculinity and be sure to share this episode with the men in your life! And if you have sons, make sure you listen to the full podcast episode or watch the episode on YouTube because we chat about how boys come alive through play and how safety is NOT the goal for your sons (and it's SO good). Be sure to follow me on Instagram where I'll be giving away 5 copies of the Kinsmen Journal!
