Jeep finished last for the second consecutive year.Plug-in hybrids and EVs remain less reliable than conventional hybrids, though the gap is narrowing. The Tower of Babel This will be our last Bible study until early next year. We begin the season of Advent next Sunday and all of us will have busy schedules. One word about our hybrid Bible study in general. Each Friday Denise sends out a brief video explaining that week's study. In general, something like 50 percent of the people who get it open the video. And, in general, about five people actually attend the discussion following church on Sunday. I have led Bible studies in churches all over Wisconsin. In general, about five people come to the discussion. Five is enough. Jesus said wherever two or three are gathered in his name, there is will be also. But the 50 percent who see it is why we make the video in the first place. So, we are all good. Now, for this week's lesson on Genesis 11, the Tower of Babel. In the early chapters of Genesis, God is presented as basically a human man who engages directly with his people. He is not everywhere at once. He drops in to see what's going on. In Babel, people have been so successful that they decide to build a tower pointing to their glory. This is a very human trait. We do the same things today. God, however, did not want potential completion. He confused the peoples' language so that no one could understand another. We call that an “etiology,” meaning an explanation for a phenomenon, in this case, the multiplicity of languages. The underlying message about wealth and power is universal. No one “needs” a mansion or a private jet or a nuclear bomb. No one “needs” a Lexus sedan – but I have one. No one actually “needs” a billion dollars, or 300 billion dollars. We accumulate such things as means to prove our worth and superiority. Those “proofs” don't last. What lasts are acts of love and of generosity that actually help make the world a happier and safer place. Pastor Bill

Para la gran mayoría de medios esta noticia ha pasado desapercibida: Mercedes no homologará sus coches para ser taxis en Alemania… Ola Källenius, presidente de Mercedes, ha anunciado esta medida. ¿Te parece una noticia nimia? A nosotros no. Al contrario, nos parece una noticia muy relevante y que muestra la decadencia de Mercedes en particular, y de la industria europea del automóvil en general… ¿Te parece exagerado? Te lo explicamos… Probablemente seré polémico… ya sabéis lo que digo siempre: “No persigo la polémica, pero no la rehúyo” ... Y es que si durante muchos años me hubieses preguntado cual es la mejor marca del Mundo, durante muchos años, décadas, hubiese dicho Mercedes… ¡y eso que no he tenido ninguno! Pero lo considero una asignatura pendiente, tener un Mercedes “de los de verdad”. O sea, de los de antes. Os sugiero ver el video titulado “Cuando los Mercedes eran auténticos Mercedes”. Pero es que Mercedes ha sido, iba a decir durante mucho tiempo, pero debería decir, desde siempre, el paradigma del coche fiable, de calidad y Premium. No olvidemos el que podríamos decir que es su lema: “Das Beste oder nichts” … para los que no sabéis alemán: “Lo mejor o nada”. Es una marca que ha sido la favorita de los taxistas, en Alemania… pero también en gran parte de África y medio oriente… Que construye TT de enorme prestigio y muy apreciados, como los Mercedes G, un coche que lleva un cuarto de siglo como una referencia en su segmento. ¿Creéis que los taxistas saben de coches o no? Sí saben de coches. Y mucho. Muchos por no decir todos los taxistas, gente que decide ganarse la vida conduciendo, son muy aficionados al mundo del motor y tienen una gran experiencia sobre la fiabilidad y coste de mantenimiento de los coches, por sí mismos y por sus compañeros. La segunda pregunta sería: ¿Qué cualidades crees que busca un taxista a la hora de comprar un coche? Fiabilidad y bajo coste de mantenimiento. Todos sabemos una cosa: Fiabilidad es igual a calidad. No se ha inventado otra forma de hacer coches irrompibles que no sea haciéndolos bien. Y, reconozcámoslo, antes de que Toyota llegase al nivel actual y antes de que naciese Lexus, el referente mundial y absoluto en términos de calidad y fiabilidad era Mercedes. Y ahora el presidente Ola Källenius, el hombre de los 6 millones de euros, dice que dejan de homologar sus coches como taxis porque quieren ser más “Premium”. Y yo os pregunto, aunque vosotros ganéis algo menos: ¿Os lo creéis? Porque nada menos que Toyota, nada menos que Tesla y nada menos que… ¡Lexus! siguen siendo marcas elegidas por los taxistas… y para mi Toyota no es Premium, aunque sí una marca de gran prestigio, pero… ¿Tesla y Lexus no son Premium? ¿Van a dejar de serlo porque te subas a un taxi de esa marca? Para mí la explicación es otra completamente diferente: Se van porque son incapaces de competir. Mercedes, y esto es una opinión, hace tiempo que ha perdido competitividad en esa relación que tenían entre calidad y precio. Porque sí, eran caros, pero eran muy buenos. Y siguen siendo caros, pero, ¿siguen siendo buenos? Mercedes, una marca que se ha distinguido por sus excelentes motores, en muchos de sus modelos usa motores Renault. ¿Y son malos motores? Pues, desde luego, no, para nada. Pero son Renault no Mercedes… en mi humilde opinión, también hay motores “Premium”. Hay dos conclusiones. A mí, me parece una verdadera pena. Mercedes deja de ser esa marca capaz de ser la más Premium del mercado o de las más, pero capaz de hacer vehículos de trabajo con esa etiqueta de “Premium”, algo que la convertida en una marca única. Porque otras marcas de coches fabrican camiones, como Renault o Volvo entre otras, o son muy habituales como furgonetas y taxis, como VW y Toyota… pero no tienen el concepto de “Premium” que tenía y a pesar de todo sigue teniendo Mercedes… ¡ya les gustaría! La segunda conclusión es más grave. Hace poco, en el video titulado “La imposición del coche eléctrico, ¡La que habéis liado!” daba bastante caña a otra de las marcas que siempre han sido de mis favoritas: VW. Aunque no tiene nada que ver con esto, me llega una información que pese a una apreciable bajada de precio del VW ID4… solo se han vendido 40… Y es que la conclusión es que las marcas europeas, empujadas por los precios de los coches chinos y la calidad de los coches japoneses, están comenzado un declive del que, si no espabilan, no van a salir. Que miren lo que paso en los USA…. Que, por cierto, lo contamos en otro video titulado “La decadencia de los coches USA” … y es que en Garaje Hermético… ¡te lo contamos todo! Pero en este video, más que en otros, me interesa vuestra opinión… os leo en comentarios.

Art Garner is an award-winning author and finalist for the prestigious PEN/ESPN award for literary sports writing for his bestselling book, Black Noon, The Year They Stopped the Indy 500. For over 40 years he worked for Ford, Toyota, Lexus, and Honda, before retiring in 2014 to finish that first book. That book is about the tragic 1964 race that was stopped by a fiery accident on the second lap resulting in the deaths of drivers Eddie Sachs and Dave MacDonald. He also co-wrote a book titled Indy 500 Memories and another, Hood to Coast Memories, about the relay running race from Mt. Hood to the coast of Oregon. Art is the author of the new biography, A.J. Foyt, Survivor, Champion, Legend, that has just been released by Octane Press. He's been working on the Foyt bio for the past five years and this is just volume one, which covers A.J.'s career through 1977. Volume Two is expected in May of 2026.

Mejor dicho, es una “media-verdad”. Porque la verdad completa es que comenzaron copiando ¡y mejorando! Los productos sobre todo europeos y también americanos. El honor de ser el primer todo terreno con el criterio actual, el que popularizo el concepto y lo hizo universal, fue el Jeep… eso es innegable. Así que Toyota, cuando quiso hacer un TT copio al Jeep… Esto te lo contamos en el video monográfico que hicimos titulado “Land Cruiser: Mejor que el original”. A mí me encanta el Jeep Wrangler, el sucesor en línea directa del inicial Jeep, pero te hago una pregunta: Si te dan a elegir entre un Wrangler y un Land Cruiser, ¿cuál te quedas? Yo lo tengo claro… De un modo u otro todas o casi todas las marcas japonesas, en algún momento de su historia, han tenido coche de TT, pero cuatro han conseguido hacer modelos icónicos de todo terreno. Estas marcas son cuatro: Mitsubishi, Nissan, Suzuki y Toyota. No me olvido de Isuzu o Daihatsu, Subaru, Honda, Infinity y Lexus, que han tenido modelos de TT o con ciertas cualidades TT y dos, Mazda y Acura, no han hecho guiños a este sector… ahora, por cierto, de capa caída. El sector, no la marcas. Así que no cabe esperar que lo hagan en el futuro. En este vñideo te contamos la historia de cómo nacieron los TT japoneses. Pero ahora toca hablar de los “Cuatro Magníficos” que para mí serían el Mitsubishi Pajero-Montero, el Nissan Patrol, el Suzuki Jimny y el Toyota Land Cruiser. Mitsubishi Montero: Refinado. El Pajero, en España llamado Montero por razones obvias, nació en 1982 pero en mi caso conocí este modelo cuanto llegó a España la segunda generación, nacida en 1991. ¡Que coche más bonito! Pero además de bonito y muy bien hecho era refinado técnicamente. Contó por primera vez con una tracción total muy sofisticada denominada “Super Select” que, a baja velocidad, podía llegar a bloquear todos los diferenciales. Las suspensiones eran muy eficientes con una combinación perfecta entre campo y carretera Y en cuanto a motores… ¡que motores! Los turbodiésel con intercooler de 2,5 y 2,8 litros y 99 y 125 CV respectivamente, eran una maravilla. Pero, ¡qué decir del V6! Su versión tope de gama, con 24 válvulas y 3,5 litros ofrecía 208 CV y un comportamiento a bajas vueltas intachable. Desgraciadamente, el Montero desapareció en el año 2021… ¡una pena! Nissan Patrol. Un verdadero lujo. Este modelo nace en 1951, pero cuando el Nissan Patrol se comenzó a fabricar en España en 1983 en su tercera generación, la única referencia que teníamos de coche de TT eran los Santana, de verdad, más próximos al lujo de un camión o un tractor que a un coche de turismo. El Patrol iba muy bien en campo, pero no tan bien como el Santana. Pero, fuera del campo, incluso por caminos, pero sobre todo en asfalto… era otro nivel. Por calidad de acabados, sonoridad, calidad general e incluso equipamiento, podemos hablar de verdadero lujo. Nunca fue tan refinado como el Montero, pero a cambio, si fue más barato. Tiene video propio titulado “Nissan Patrol: El coche que cambió el TT”. Suzuki Jimny. Simpático y asequible. También hicimos un video monográfico del Jimny titulado “Suzuki Jimny, el mito resucita”. No he podido decidirme a poner solo un adjetivo, porque me parece relevante que el Suzuki siempre ha sido un coche mucho más modesto que los demás japoneses, pero también mucho más asequible. Pero siempre he asociado la marca Suzuki a los coches simpáticos, a los coches que “caen bien” y creo que esto se debe, en gran parte, al menos en España, a este modelo, que invento el concepto TT “de ocio”. Toyota Land Cruiser. Robustez. No me declaro fan de Toyota, porque en ocasiones me han parecido coches con cierta falta de capacidad de seducción. Fan quizás no, pero admirador sin duda, porque es una marca con ideas claras y que hace las cosas muy bien… como es el caso del este modelo. Este modelo nace en 1951 como una copia del Jeep, pero no ha dejado de mejorar, de buscar una personalidad propia, ha destacado por su robustez, pero también por ser un modelo en según qué versiones casi de lujo, pero también apto como modelo de trabajo e incluso militar. ¡Uy! es que cuando las cosas se hacen bien todos, desde los adinerados caprichosos a los militares, con capaces de apreciarlo.
