Original Air Date: 08/20/24 Patrick explores how to honor our parents, heal, and find lightness in letting go. Dealing with difficult parental relationships can be tough, but honoring your father and mother doesn't mean putting them on a pedestal. It's about giving the due respect they deserve, even if your parents have hurt you or done wrong. Forgiveness is key. Release that emotional baggage and find peace. Even if you don't feel the warm and fuzzies, praying for them can be enough. Don't stay in toxic or dangerous situations, but know that honoring them can also mean setting boundaries. Joan - How do you know if a marriage is valid or could be annulled? (00:52) Tom - What if you were the child of Hitler/Mussolini, should you honor them? I say no. Regardless of where you came from, the best way to honor parents is to live a Godly life and bring honor to the family. (22:55) Patrick talks with Cyrus about forgiveness and not carrying the weight of anger and resentment with you (30:58) Diane - Because of Patrick's show, I’m getting married again to my husband in a Church! (40:42) Job - There was a tremendous amount of infidelity on my wife part (who's in the public eye) and I slapped her. My children hate me. We don't have an annulment. I don't know how to approach her. How do I get through to my kids that I'm the good guy? (47:58)

About the Topic: The topic is focused from the lens of Prudence: Prudence is the first cardinal virtue for a reason; it is the virtue that teaches us knowledge of reality. From prudence, we gain the ability to discern what is good in every circumstance and to choose the right actions. St. Thomas Aquinas quotes Aristotle that “prudence is right reason applied to action” Foresight, a sub-virtue of prudence, is the ability to see into the future and direct actions toward an end. Foresight allows us to rightly order present actions to a good end, knowing that we can never fully predict the future. Shrewdness, another sub-virtue of prudence. It means to be able to form both a correct and a quick opinion. This is done by developing the mental insight to read between the lines or finding the middle term in a demonstration. The Latin is solertia, which means to have a clear-sighted objectivity, even a dispassionate observance of situations. The one who is shrewd is agile and quick-witted, able to put the pieces together, both from memory and from learning, into the big picture. Job 1There was a man in the land of Uz whose name was Job. And that man was blameless and upright, one who feared God and turned away from evil. Seven sons and three daughters were born to him. His possessions included 7,000 sheep, 3,000 camels, 500 yoke of oxen, and 500 female donkeys; in addition he had a very great household. Thus he was the greatest of all the people in the east. Now his sons used to go and hold a feast in the house of each one in turn, and they would send and invite their three sisters to eat and to drink with them. When the days of their feasting were finished, Job would send for them and sanctify them; he would get up early in the morning and offer burnt offerings according to the number of them all. For Job thought, “Perhaps my children have sinned and cursed God in their hearts.” This was Job’s customary practice. Now the day came when the sons of God came to present themselves before the Lord—and Satan also arrived among them. The Lord said to Satan, “Where have you come from?” And Satan answered the Lord, “From roving about on the earth, and from walking back and forth across it.” So the Lord said to Satan, “Have you considered my servant Job? There is no one like him on the earth, a blameless and upright man, one who fears God and turns away from evil.”Then Satan answered the Lord, “Is it for nothing that Job fears God? Have you not made a hedge around him and his household and all that he has on every side? You have blessed the work of his hands, and his livestock have increased in the land. But extend your hand and strike everything he has, and he will no doubt curse you to your face!”So the Lord said to Satan, “All right then, everything he has is in your power. Only do not extend your hand against the man himself!” So Satan went out from the presence of the Lord. Now the day came when Job’s sons and daughters were eating and drinking wine in their oldest brother’s house, and a messenger came to Job, saying, “The oxen were plowing and the donkeys were grazing beside them, and the Sabeans swooped down and carried them all away, and they killed the servants with the sword! And I—only I alone—escaped to tell you!”While this one was still speaking, another messenger arrived and said, “The fire of God has fallen from heaven and has burned up the sheep and the servants—it has consumed them! And I—only I alone—escaped to tell you!”While this one was still speaking another messenger arrived and said, “The Chaldeans formed three bands and made a raid on the camels and carried them all away, and they killed the servants with the sword! And I—only I alone—escaped to tell you!”While this one was still speaking another messenger arrived and said, “Your sons and your daughters were eating and drinking wine in their oldest brother’s house, and suddenly a great wind swept across the wilderness and struck the four corners of the house, and it fell on the young people, and they died! And I—only I alone—escaped to tell you!”Then Job got up and tore his robe. He shaved his head, and then he threw himself down with his face to the ground. He said, “Naked I came from my mother’s womb, and naked I will return there. The Lord gives, and the Lord takes away. May the name of the Lord be blessed!” In all this Job did not sin, nor did he charge God with moral impropriety.
Job 2:1-102 On another day the angel came to present themselves before the Lord, and Satan also came with them to present himself before him. 2 And the Lord said to Satan, “Where have you come from?”Satan answered the Lord, “From roaming throughout the earth, going back and forth on it.”3 Then the Lord said to Satan, “Have you considered my servant Job? There is no one on earth like him; he is blameless and upright, a man who fears God and shuns evil. And he still maintains his integrity, though you incited me against him to ruin him without any reason.”4 “Skin for skin!” Satan replied. “A man will give all he has for his own life. 5 But now stretch out your hand and strike his flesh and bones, and he will surely curse you to your face.”6 The Lord said to Satan, “Very well, then, he is in your hands; but you must spare his life.”7 So Satan went out from the presence of the Lord and afflicted Job with painful sores from the soles of his feet to the crown of his head. 8 Then Job took a piece of broken pottery and scraped himself with it as he sat among the ashes.9 His wife said to him, “Are you still maintaining your integrity? Curse God and die!”10 He replied, “You are talking like a foolish< woman. Shall we accept good from God, and not trouble?”In all this, Job did not sin in what he said.Download Message Slides

Hebrew Bible Job 1:1, 2:1-10 There was once a man in the land of Uz whose name was Job. That man was blameless and upright, one who feared God and turned away from evil. One day the heavenly beings came to present themselves before the Lord, and Satan also came among them to present himself before the Lord. The Lord said to Satan, “Where have you come from?” Satan answered the Lord, “From going to and fro on the earth, and from walking up and down on it.” The Lord said to Satan, “Have you considered my servant Job? There is no one like him on the earth, a blameless and upright man who fears God and turns away from evil. He still persists in his integrity, although you incited me against him, to destroy him for no reason.” Then Satan answered the Lord, “Skin for skin! All that people have they will give to save their lives. But stretch out your hand now and touch his bone and his flesh, and he will curse you to your face.” The Lord said to Satan, “Very well, he is in your power; only spare his life.” So Satan went out from the presence of the Lord, and inflicted loathsome sores on Job from the sole of his foot to the crown of his head. Job took a potsherd with which to scrape himself, and sat among the ashes. Then his wife said to him, “Do you still persist in your integrity? Curse God, and die.” But he said to her, “You speak as any foolish woman would speak. Shall we receive the good at the hand of God, and not receive the bad?” In all this Job did not sin with his lips. Psalm 17 Listen to righteousness, O Lord; attend to my cry;give ear to my prayer from lips free of deceit. From you let my justice come;let your eyes see where I am upright. If you try my heart, if you visit me by night,if you test me, you will find no wickedness in me;my mouth does not sin.As for what others do, by the word of your lipsI have avoided the ways of the violent. My steps have held fast to your paths;my feet have not slipped.I call upon you, for you will answer me, O God;incline your ear to me, hear my words.Wondrously show your steadfast love,O savior of those who seek at your right handrefuge from their enemies.Guard me as the apple of the eye;hide me in the shadow of your wings, from the wicked who oppress me,from my deadly enemies who surround me.They have closed up their unfeeling hearts;they speak arrogantly with their mouths. They track me down; now they surround me;they set their eyes to cast me to the ground. They are like a lion eager to tear his prey, like a young lion lurking in ambush.Rise up, O Lord, confront them, overthrow them!By your sword deliver my life from the wicked. As for me, I shall behold your face in righteousness;when I awake I shall be satisfied, beholding your likeness. Mark 10:2-16 Some Pharisees came to Jesus, and to test him they asked, “Is it lawful for a man to divorce his wife?” He answered them, “What did Moses command you?” They said, “Moses allowed a man to write a certificate of dismissal and to divorce her.” But Jesus said to them, “Because of your hardness of heart he wrote this commandment for you. But from the beginning of creation, ‘God made them male and female.’ ‘For this reason a man shall leave his father and mother and be joined to his wife, and the two shall become one flesh.’ So they are no longer two, but one flesh. Therefore what God has joined together, let no one separate.” Later, when they were alone in the house together, the disciples asked him again about this. He said to them, “Whoever divorces his wife and marries another commits adultery against her; and if she divorces her husband and marries another, she commits adultery.” People were bringing little children to him in order that he might touch them; and the disciples spoke sternly to them. But when Jesus saw this, he was indignant and said to them, “Let the little children come to me; do not stop them; for it is to such as these that the kingdom of God belongs. Truly I tell you, whoever does not receive the kingdom of God as a little child will never enter it.” And he took them up in his arms, laid his hands on them, and blessed them.
Fatherhood is More Than a Job There are many stereotypes about fatherhood. Well, about Dads, and that colors our view of what fatherhood should be. A dad is more than an ATM that dispenses money and the guy that takes you to sporting events. A true father is an important part of their child's' life. The work related excuses fro skipping time with our kids are just that, an excuse. A father needs to bring his special toolset to the parenting equation to combine with what mother brings to the table. These two distinct roles help a child to grow up into a well-balanced adult rather than spending a lot of time on a consulting couch.
