Portia Obeng is a social media strategist with over 10 years of experience in social media strategy and content management. Her current focus is supporting individuals and organizations in their use of LinkedIn and Instagram. Our conversation focuses on how anyone, but especially job seekers can use LinkedIn to build their person brand. This is episode complements last season's conversation with Jeremy Schifeling about his book Linked, and using LinkedIn for job search. We talk about: Why you should pay attention to LinkedIn even if you are happy with the job you're in, and why companies should want their employees to be active on LinkedIn. How to get started with interacting and making content on LinkedIn from: Making comments that add value on other people's posts. Commenting on your own company's posts Writing LinkedIn articles Making images with Canva both for posts and for your profile banner image Portia's top advice for updating your profile: Get a good profile photo and make sure it is set to visible to all people If you need a new photo, book a photo shoot with Shoott, or AirBNB Experience, or get a friend to help out. Be sure to smile. Don't be afraid to be bold and show your personality. Natural (and indirect) light is your friend. You can read an article I wrote with four tips for taking a LinkedIn Profile Photo. Update your headline and use key words for the role you want. Her formula for the about section: What you do, how you do it, and why you're so good at it. Highlight your results. Update your LinkedIn Banners with and image made on Canva. The banner is a free billboard to advertise your value proposition We also talk about getting recommendation from colleagues or clients for your LinkedIn Profile. Find Your Dream Job: Insider Tips for Finding Work, Advancing your Career, and Loving Your Job
Big risks can deliver big rewards for your career, whether it’s switching industries or asking for more money. While change is scary, it’s worthwhile to take smart risks in your career if you have a goal in mind. Joymarie Parker says you should be taking risks in your career, but only when you’ve done your research and have a solid plan. One risk you should definitely take: ask for more money when you know you’re worth it. Joymarie Our Guest for This Episode: Joymarie Parker Joymarie Parker is a marketer and the founder and co-host of Joblogues, a podcast and platform that offers candid career conversations with multicultural professionals and entrepreneurs. Originally from Maryland, Joymarie now lives in Brooklyn where you can catch her exploring the restaurant scene or planning her next vacation. Ben’s Job Search Resource: Are Pain Letters Over? Are pain letters on the way out? A pain letter is a different approach to a cover letter that addresses the employer’s pain point and outlines how the applicant can solve it. But Alison Green of the Ask a Manager blog says the pain letter is a “cover letter but with lots of added salesiness and a serious dose of presumption.” Read the whole post: Do Pain Letters Really Work? Find Your Dream Job Listener Question This week’s listener question comes from McKenzie O’Malley of Portland, Oregon, via email. “I would love to explore the possibility of potentially working at Under Armour’s recently established Portland-based office in some kind of administrative role (of which I have 3+ years of experience, primarily in nonprofit settings), but do not have any direct contacts or even potential connections via LinkedIn. I was wondering if you had any additional advice, insights, or individuals in mind that I could possibly connect with to see if I could even get a small foot in the door with the company.” These segments are sponsored by Mac’s new book, Land Your Dream Job Anywhere. The book offers practical, actionable, and proven tools to help you get clear about your career goals, find hidden jobs, and ace your next interview. I recently joined the Joblogues podcast to discuss how anyone can use branding principles to position themselves for career success. On that episode, I broke branding down to its most basic level: "Your brand is not what you say it is, it is what the audience says it is." However, I didn't get a chance to go deeper and explain that while this is true, you have a great deal of power to influence how your audience views you and/or your business.
Welcome to the very first episode of Joblogues! This month, I caught up with Gina & Wei, two dynamic, young entrepreneurs who launched New York City-based clothing line, Avantūr, with no prior fashion experience. We chat about taking risks, making new connections, lessons learned after a year in business and the importance of just getting started. I hope that this episode serves as a source of inspiration for you as you pursue your own dreams! Links + resources: joblogues.com/links See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.
